    We met you in Mt.Laguna Sunrise Hwy, and have followed your adventures. This is epic!!!! Congrats! Loved how you shared your personal apprehensions. Truly remarkable video. Thanks.

      Hi Charlie!! I do remember you both from this past January. Thanks for following the adventures! This one was certainly a trip for the record books!
      I’m just glad that I was able to share it with my son (Bigfoot).
      As for apprehensions, i don’t know if the video explains it very well, but it was the altitude that I was afraid of being crippled by.
      Our Diamox meds and spending the night before at Portal seemed to do the trick!
      As for the next adventure, stay tuned for a Mt San Gorgonio trip this month, and a really nice Whitney video from Bigfoot (which I will post on my channel).
      In the meantime, take care! 😉

      I will value these memories with my son forever! Pales in comparrision is right, planning to hike San Gorgornio (again) in a couple weeks..... feels like a walk in the park compared to Whitney.

    Thank you for posting this! I hiked Mt. Whitney in the 6th grade. That was 30 years ago. I didn't realize it then, but that trip would come to be my greatest of childhood memories. So tiring, but so beautiful and worth it. Congratulations on making it. And again, thank you so much for posting.

      Thanks for the kind words James!
      This was certainly a trip for the books, my favorite part was watching my 16 year old son summit in front of me.
      I couldn’t imagine a 6th grader doing this climb! My hats off to you for achieving that!

      We sure did Jack!!! The forecast had some really low temps that we never saw. Even though we carried lots of winter cloths up the mountain and never used them, I was glad to do so ... in exchange for these perfect conditions. ~woodglue

      @@BackpackingWithWoodglue it was dark by the time I reached trail camp, from there I had a hard time staying on the trail, it's way different hiking at night. I got to the trail head at 11:30.

      Holy cow! We got to trail camp right before it got dark. We too lost the trail (with GPS and 4 sets of eyes) a few times and we immediately wondered how you were going to make it through those areas.
      Thinking back, we regretted leaving you up there. We talked about it afterwards, and knew that this video is the only way we would be able to connect with you.

    Congratulations on your summit! We did the regular route in August 2016. Total walking time was 13 hours, but we camped at Trail Camp. Got there about noon, set up, and summited with day packs, came back down and camped. We tried the mountaineers route July, 2017 but got rained out at Lower Boy Scout Lake. That ice around 8:20 looks sketchy!

    • @BackpackingWithWoodglue
      @BackpackingWithWoodglue  4 года назад +1

      Goatlord, I've I were to do this again from the East side, I would want to base camp at Outpost or Trail Camp like you did. While that Ice looks sketchy, we got home from this trip to hear that it snowed up there just 5 days later. We barely missed it! Do you see yourself ever reattempting the mountaineers route? THAT would make for some GREAT video!

      Thanks for the kind words Susie! This video has photos and video-clips that Bigfoot took with his Canon 6Dmkii camera 24-70 f2.8 lens. In addition, I was recording with my iPhoneX on a stabilizing gimbal (that I've almost learned how to use!).

    • @thuthiehiker
      @thuthiehiker 4 года назад

      Wow the video footage was so crisp. Which gimbal? You gave a great amount of footage to give me an idea of the trail. I find some of it daunting. I’m afraid of heights. But I still hike and deal with the heights.

    • @BackpackingWithWoodglue
      @BackpackingWithWoodglue  4 года назад +2

      My gimbal is the Moza Mini Mi, it holds my phone. It does the job well, but it weighs over a pound. I think there are lighter gimbals out there now.
      There is really just one place in this trail that’s intimidating heights, it’s shown in this video at 11:00.
      I think it’s good that you don’t let your fears keep you off trail! That’s the beauty of this sport, allowing your mind to push your body, allowing your mind to overcome fears.
      I love surprising myself out there ... you know.... ‘Wow I really just did that!!’
