    My Nan worked at Airfix in the 1970s and so as children we were lucky enough to have had just about every model - and toy - they ever made. Christmas was the time I got to see the larger kits my pocket money wouldn't usually stretch to. Sometimes my nan would 'save' some of the discontinued kits from being destroyed as these could be bought by staff for pennies!
    I miss both my grand parents dearly, we were very lucky indeed.

    Airfix catalogues you purchased just brought memories flooding back. The hours I used to spend perusing them as a child - a Proustian moment! The pictures and memories are so evocative. Thank you for the content.

    the "civilians" box, the sort of thing from Airfix's raliway sets .. they represent a world now sadly long gone. what the heck would a "civilians" set look like now if meant to represent Europe :D some really golden oldies - i had some of these as a kid growing up in the 1970's.. Airfix was at the centre of many British kid's lives! everyone bought the catalogues every year and looked forward to the new releases!! .. and how our pocket money would be spent in the year ahead!!

      England was insane when it comes to all the great boys toys that were produced there back then.
      I think for a few Hong Kong toys all my toys were made in England.

      Totally agreed. I would visit virtually every local model shop in my area all sadly now gone. Would buy the catalogues without fail and gaze at what I could afford for 50p a week pocket money. Could not wait for Christmas and my Birthday to come in order to get my top "targets". Made up for it since although doubt my bank manager is happy about it, just wish the cost were at 1970's prices !

    I’m having fantastic flashbacks to all these great airfix figures and models. The soft plastic vehicles were wonderful as they were slightly cheaper than the model kits. The time I spent playing with these was immense. My favourites were the Afrika Korps and British commandos that had canoes. Thanks you.

    Great set of purchases, remember coming home from school in late 65 or early 66 and mom had bought me the first box of British infantry and cut the figures of the sprue and sanded the bases flat and set them up on a cloth over books and made a scene with some of my matchbox, still have most of them in a tobacco tin in the loft, spent many Happy hours looking through the catalogues the first being the 67 one and still have them all up to about 83 or 84.

    Wonderful, Excellent. I have the full range of Type 1 Airfix HO/OO Figures, Mint in Box on Sprue, together with the Play Forts and Zoo Set. However, I confess that these first issues are not very good. The Box Art is extremely dull. The figures are basic. It was the Blue Edge Boxes that made me fall in love with Airfix at the tender age of 5 years old. The Artwork really sells the excitement of what to expect, even though the figures are the exact same! It has taken me decades, but I finally have the entire Blue Edge Box collection, (Once again, Mint in Box). It is wonderful to see them crop up on your channel. Thank you for making me smile.

    That 1960 era Combat Infantry set was included in the 1970s MPC Historama set of Pearl Harbor; it also contained a Japanese Val and a vacuform base with a destroyed P-40 molded in. I remember the stretcher and the flailing soldier being shot! Those were pretty neat sets. I still have one with the DUKW and British Commandos (with kayaks) from D-Day.

    First set I ever owned in 1/72 were the "bluebox" issue of the WW1 RHA about 1971, about 17p a box if I remember correctly. Combined my collection with 1/32nd figures and the vehicles and virtually every set up until about 1978 including the kits, diorama sets and vehicles before moving on to Revell and Italeri. Maybe better detail but still have fond memories of the Airfix models no question.

    I love my Airfix soldiers. The first I bought were the Infantry Combat Group and the Afrika Korps, plus several ROCO Minitanks. These were the start of my HO tanks and soldiers from back in the 60’s. Still have tons of them and will never sell them. My heirs might, but not me. My only regret is my oldest soldiers are crumbling from age. 😢

      Yes it seem like all the US toy soldiers were bulk army builders of ok sculpt quality while the English was a lot nicer (and painted in some cases) but you only got a few. Airfix kinda changed that with great sculpts in army builder size boxes.

    0:26 : I have the colourful ''portrait'' Airfix 1/72 Paratroopers too, one of the later boxes. 2:15 : I never had the green landing craft, only the grey one. 5:32 : My Strongpoint set was also indeed tan. I later painted it in I hope realistic colours. Not sure why I never kept it? 6:35 : I have the 1/72 scale Italian set, not the 1/32 scale set. 8:00 : I have the old 1970s ''black crescent'' box of the BISG.
    Those prices are ridiculous! 😯😳😱 I know 40 or 50 years of inflation can blow up prices, but this is insane. I've said it before on this channel: I should have more sets in my youth. They were sooo cheap...

    4:04 Those figures are straight knock-offs of Britain's 1/32 scale Herald "Khaki Infantry" figures. I don't understand how Airfix wasn't sued.

    • @toysoldiernostalgia
      @toysoldiernostalgia  Год назад

      As I understand it that Airfix wasn`t the only company ”borrowing” ideas and figures at this time. Then there`s the fact of different sculptors accually working for several companys as freelance artists. So it`s kinda a mess trying to find out who sculpted what back then.
