  • 1964 Mercury Comet First Start after heads and cam - We've got some issues!
Many times starting up a freshly built engine doesn't always go as planned. That was definitely the case after installing FloTek 180cc Aluminum Heads, Trick Flow's Stage 1 Camshaft, Victor Jr. Intake, and new 1-5/8" headers on this 64 Comet.
Watch this video as we walk through the myriad of issues from oil consumption to missfires. By the end we get it all sorted out and tell you what to look for to save you some headache!

Great video, sounds great. In stall a magnetic drain plug or a magnet on the oil filter to can that metal in the oil. Looking for more content.

A few sparkles in the oil of a fresh engine is pretty common, just so long as it's not magnetic metal. Run a small pocket magnet through the drain pan and see how much of it sticks to it. If it's a lot, then you may have some hard parts issues like rings wearing cylinders rather than seating properly, or worst case a self clearancing crank/rod/etc not getting oiled right. Good luck man! Been wanting to do a similar build on a '62 Ford 2 door hard top. This is really exciting for me!

If yer concerned about the screws coming loose on the baffles just get some blue loc-tite a couple drops on the threads goes a long way... If you fall short on the dyno I'm sure a little NOS could make up the difference 🤔

Good call. I did locktite the screws in ;).
Trust me I thought about nitrous! My only concern is whether or not my tom foolery notching those valve reliefs could result in some not so ideal hot spots. We will have to see how close I get ;)
