In this clip, Morris Day explained what the final straw was which led to him parting ways with Prince. Morris Day said that after being denied creative control over his album he knew it was time to make a change. He also described an instance when he tried working with Prince again after Prince adopted the Jehovah's Witness faith and why things didn't pan out.
"Some things you just don't ask people." -Morris Day

I have been a Jehovahs Witness for roughly 2 years (as January 6th 2018 is the day I was baptized) and I am blissful and appreciative! I happy for many reasons. A few being - I have a personal relationship with the creator of the universe, and the father of our current heavenly reigning king Jesus Christ (soon to be earthly as well!) all this of course is by means of Christ’s ransom sacrifice! This arrangement allows me to speak to Jehovah in prayer at any time of day and my God will hear me! Hear me express my emotional or physical pain, talk about my problems that I encounter while living in this wicked system; and my God Jehovah comforts me, soothes me! He is the “Hearer Of Prayer” as the book of Psalms so eloquently refers him as! He speaks right to me to, by means of the Bible (his word), sometimes thru a fellow brother or sister, coming to my aid! I therefore know my God has heard me and am relieved! I’m able to praise him! Pray for others who may be under trial. I’m grateful for the ransom sacrifice by means of Jesus Christ without it I (you) would have no hope. The faithful and discreet slave who dispenses spiritual good at the proper time! An association of brothers and sisters are in sync and working in union with each other and Jehovahs Theocratic arrangement! It all truly is Undeserved Kindness!

An already controlling person converting to a Jehovah’s Witness is a dangerous combination 🤦♀️. Good for Morris for standing his ground👏👏👏.
The JW'S have a unique viewpoint on the world we live in. Prince and Michael weren't idiots.
So unique that he died because of that bullshit. U know Jehovas said 2 Michel either them or his career.guess what he choosed
Damn. Join my religion so we can make music together ..? Too much
😂 right
That sounds awfully simplistic and Prince was not a simple dude.
No Prince was looking for answers all along. When he started studying with Larry Graham, he found them. Before studying he sung about sex and love. After he studied and learned about Jehovah and his purpose for the earth, he was awakened to what's really going on in the world and why. He even renounced some of his earlier work like "Get Off" and other sexually explicit material.
@@marcusb.3038 But he still Sang DMSR and other songs that would get any active JW in trouble with the elders.
Jehovahs witnesses do that. If you dont convert they dont let you get close.
I guess Larry Graham took 12 years to convert Prince into Jehovah's Witnesses had finally works.
I didn't take 12 years for Larry Graham to convert Prince. Prince did a concert stop in Nashville, Tennessee back in August 1997. After the concert, Prince and his band visited a nearby club to play an aftershow. Larry Graham and his band Graham Central Station who were in Nashville as part of a tour organized by the comedian Sinbad were at that afteshow. Prince invited Larry on stage during the aftershow and afterwards backstage they started talking. Prince invited Larry to appear with him on stops during the reminder of the Jam of the Year tour. Backstage or in the dressing rooms during these shows, Larry started talking to Prince about the Jehovah's Witness faith. Long story short, by December 1999 Prince was a full blown practicing Jehovah's Witness. Prince even started changing lyrics in past songs that he thought went against the Jehovah Witnesses teachings.
Think Prince mother was a JW
@@charrua59 She started out as a Seventh Day Adventist but later in life became a Jehovah's Witness. It is said that before she died she told Prince that it was her wish that he'd become a Jehovah's Witness.
@@PrinceTron1 Yes you are right. That was what i read years ago. He study the Bible with Larry Graham after that.
Well , My understanding was that his ex-wife’s parents are JW and after the passing of his baby they would,as parents should, try to encourage them during that difficult time well again my understanding was Prince started taking to the truth but the wife was going in another direction and on meeting and working with LG is how he eventually decided he wanted to study and eventually become one of Jehovah’s Witness. But that’s the story I remember but whatever the case he is asleep for now and when he awakens in God’s new system along with his son and parents as Rev. 21:3,4 and be apart of God’s original plan for mankind to live forever on earth in peace. And he just wanted to share his hope with long and dear friend Morris and others because he loved them, genuinely!
I’ve been a big Prince fan since his first hit single but no way I’d follow a religion because of him even if I was in his circle. You should never try to control people and listening to Morris it seems that was his way.
No one should ever subscribe to a religion for perks, nor use perks to seduce someone into a religion. That's a cult.
His JW story makes no sense. Morris, don't make me doubt some of the other storytelling.

Vlad, when you interview people close to bigger artists (Prince), do you tell them the main purpose is to learn about the bigger artist or themselves?

Prince was very spiritual person deep down inside. Rest In Peace to that brotha.
Shenyae, You are correct, in fact He was more Highly Spiritual than most JW's.
Prince was about prince first....genius, freak, highly gifted...but very controlling
@@jonathanhanser5914 It was a two-way street I’m sure Morris had his controlling ways to Nobody is perfect Morris is only telling his side of the Story But there’s always two sides
Well you can’t convert anyone to become a Jehovah’s Witness… so I am sure Prince was probably just sharing his knowledge and most likely stated how good it would be if they were brothers in the truth to make music but Prince and every one knows that he waters but it’s God who makes it grow.
I seriously doubt if that's the way it went down. You don't just automatically become a JW. You have to study the bible for a while, make changes in your life, and then dedicate yourself to Jehovah God through baptism. Impossible for Morris to achieve in one night.
Morris probably misunderstood what Prince meant. JW's do not closely associate with people who don't share their beliefs. Prince and Morris knew each other since childhood and probably engaged in all kinds of wild behavior. So Prince evidently was letting Morris know he wasn't about that life anymore and that if they were going to work together Morris would have to refrain from certain type of behavior and perhaps even study the bible with him. Prince had every right to request this. Morris had every right to reject it and he did.
Wrong.. Prince was an opioid abuser since the late 80's.. Just another weird talented dope fiend..
You might have a point there...
I love how religious cowards validate each others words without any proof of action. Prince was a narcissistic hedonist and that was until the day he died. His only interest in religion was CONTROL, which is exactly what JW is all about.
@@BIGBOX84 Who was Prince controlling? Who are JWs controlling? People make this claim all the time as if JWs are some kind of cult. Unlike most churches JWs are not allowed to practice immoral behavior that the bible condemns. We try to adhere closely to God's standards. If a person cannot bring their life in harmony with these standards they're free to leave. How is that about control?
Could you be a member of a vegan food club if you ate meat 2 or 3 times a week. Could you show up to a gathering with spare ribs? No they would kick you out the club. So if you can't be a Vegan you don't have too. They cannot force you to be one. The same principles apply spiritually and morally with Jehovah's Organization. Jehovah doesn't "CONTROL" anyone. He gave us the gift of "FREE WILL" but it you want to become a member of his family there's certain standards you must meet. So stop spreading lies about JWs. Here's a FAQ on their website www.jw.org/en/jehovahs-witnesses/faq/
eric gray you are wrong. Many kids are baptized very young and end up being shunned by their family for having a boyfriend/girlfriend which should be none of their business .. the JW’s believe salvation is through their organization and their rules NOT JESUS CHRIST...
So for instance if I believe in Jehovah and I sin like everybody else I’ll be damned if 3 guys who have no credentials or “holy authority” are going to judge weather or not I repent and “kick me out the club”... the only person you need to repent to is JESUS AND JEHOVAH... the WATCHTOWER SOCIETY makes you repent to them which is blasphemy.

These celebs are always different behind closed doors. Morris was practically like his brother and he treated strangers better
Jehovah's witness believe Jesus is the archangel Micheal, but Hebrews chapter 1 proves God did not make any angels his firstbegotten and that all angels must worship Jesus (Hebrews 1:5-6). God Himself even calls HIS SON GOD (Hebrews 1:8)
Jehovah's witness and Mormons are cults created by Satanists. That's why they both bring heresies to your front door. No wonder, Charles Taze Russel and Joseph Smith were satanic Freemasons. Charles Taze Russel was buried in a masonic cemetery and Joseph Smith wrote in his journal "I was in the masonic lodge and rose to the sublime degree". Sublime degree is of a master mason. Albert Pike, one of the leaders of Freemasonry wrote that the god of Freemasonry is Lucifer. That's why Joseph Smith died, he was spilling secrets of Freemasonry. He was even wearing a witch's Jupiter Talisman to attract women the day he died. He was after all, a polygamist. These two groups don't go to heaven. A Christian by definition is a follower of Jesus Christ, but Jehovah's witness and Mormons are called by another name, because they follow false prophets.
Jesus gives eternal life to His followers only (John 10:27)

I recall a news story about Prince going door to door spreading the Holy Word for the Jehovah's Witnesses. He was modestly dressed (try and picture that). It was Sunday. In Minnesota. While the Vikings were playing.
He got over his crazy dressed period after the 90s.
One thing for sure in these comments is the Jehovah witnesses are very polarizing.
I appreciate Morris telling his story. He has nothing to gain or lose and I believe him. When you infringe on another's religious beliefs or lack there of, you're wrong. I still respect Prince but I heard for years he was very quirky.
Wow, people played instruments in a band with no sampling in the 80's?
Full interview please!!!!!! Love me some Morris and prince 💜
I'm sure Morris knew what he was in for and he's probably there to promote his book anyway, but it's kind of funny to hear him rehash stories that are over 30 yrs old. I'm getting the impression that he and Prince really didn't kick it much past the 80's.
They stopped kicking it after Champagne when Prince signed up to work for Chris Moon and pursue a solo career. When Prince's 2nd album went platinum, Morris was working at a car rental agency. At that point he decided to return to Minneapolis and ask Prince for help.
They hugged and talked at Paisley Park sometime before he died.

It appears that Prince wanted physical and financial control over everyone around him. He wanted to profit and limit his musical peers of becoming independent and owning the rights to their own material. Prince, was very shrewd businessman. Morris had to move on to keep his pride and respect. And no I'm not joining your religion that's not apart of this music deal.
Leave your religious beliefs at home business is business....I wouldn't have came back either....if you have to bribe someone into a religion then you need to second guess your membership
mystapaul could have told me that shit over phone without wasting time and money to fly over.😳
Bribery, intimidation, threats and violence have been used to spread religion throughout history.
Your not hearing the whole story just one side. I’m pretty sure what Prince meant was I can no longer do those type of sexuality songs and etc. so for us to do music together we have to have the same beliefs in order to be on one accord. I’m sure there wasn’t a ultimatum. And for the record there is no membership lol.

Producing & writing = More 💰
The way he moved his ring. Priceless.
Larry Graham (bass player of the band Sly and the Family Stone, and uncle to rapper Drake) was the one who converted Prince into a Jehovah's Witness in the early 2000s. It pulled him away from all the sexuality and deviance he was known for in the '80s & '90s.
Prince's mother Mattie was also a JW and told Prince to join before she died
And it made his music boring. Which was a terrible move since albums after the Gold Experience went downhill, music wise.
@@PhuckHue2 That is an often stated untruth. Mrs Baker was a Baptist at the time she passed.
As a Jehovah's Witnesses....Prince trying to force his beliefs on him is extreme. That's not the way at all.
I think it's all about perception. (If Prince acted in this way we really don't know) But what I think happened was Prince probably witnessed to him and at the same time probably informed him(Morris) about certain standards that he went by musically. How are the JWs a Cult though? The Witnesses will tell you any and everything about their faith. So how is it a cult? I'm inquiring regarding a comment below.
80s/90s Fan were not. We’re very transparent about our beliefs and we do everything without asking for a single dime and it’s all voluntary. Nobody gets paid.. no collection plates etc.. people who say we are a cult must not know what it really means
Never have you ever heard JW killing themselves...which most cults believe in.
Riley Richard our life is precious and a gift from Jehovah. It’s not ours to take away. Jehovah also knows the heart and if a person does it he knows why (ex: mentally not in their right mind/ depression etc.) that’s why we don’t judge, that’s for Jehovah to do
“Cult” is not a well defined term. JW is a strange sect (whose only benefit is that they don’t threaten people with eternal hellfire), but calling it a cult is reactionary.

Religion is a double-edged sword when it comes to inspiring great art. I've seen it used to create works of genius from Leonardo to Aretha Franklin. Conversely, it can also ruin the quality of an artist's work. I've seen that example from Bob Dylan and Prince.
Kanye?
The sexiest freckles!!
Morris is lying. I happen to know for a fact that Prince, as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, would never expect Morris to convert in order to work with him. That goes totally against what they believe and stand for.
John Wyatt JW’s believe “worldly” people are “bad association” .. there are hardcore JW’s and moderate ones but my parents and my friends parents had to get a “back room talking to” because a hardcore witness family reported that we were riding bikes and skateboards and playing with water guns with the neighborhood kids. It’s not hard to believe that prince wanted people to convert. You are lying to yourself and the people if you think a witness wouldn’t do such things.
I don't think he tried to "convert" him. He just tried to give him the message. Period.
If he wasn't trying to convert him then why did he send JWs to his house to preach the message? Prince should of left it where Morris Day left it.
We always try to get the message out to everyone. You can't force anybody. Prince was a JW, as you so rudely put it. I don't know if he "sent" them there. We always try to preach to people. If people don't listen, that's them. I've been a "JW" for over forty years, so I should know..
They used to hit my house at 7:30 am every Saturday morning for a couple of years. Then l stopped opening the door, or would tell them l was a Pagan or something. It stopped the visits. We used to talk about who could scare them the worst.
Why not just tell them you're not interested in joining their church and have a good day?
@@RicArmstrong because those idiots think saying it politely means you're on the fence and continue to proselytize. So saying you worship the devil works better
They are so nice, and they keep coming back. I put a no solicitation sign in two places. I was still getting callers. That's what l say now. I was a bit younger when. Ok.....?😇😇😇😇💜💜💜😇😇😇😇💜💜💜😇😇😇😇💜💜💜😇😇😇😇💜💜💜😇😇😇😇💜💜💜😇😇😇😇💜💜💜😇😇😇
JWs dont knock on doors that early...
We don’t knock on doors at 7:30 am so I’m sure your exaggerating the time to make a point? Telling us your a pagan won’t stop us from coming either.. tell us to put you on the “DONT NOT CALL LIST” and we will not come back.
It's true Prince was a brother in the Jehovah Witnesses congregation. My bible study teacher back then, who is an Elder called him 'Brother Nelson.' The Witnesses refer to each other as brothers and sisters. He told me of the crazy reactions when Prince would be going door to door, preaching the good news!
People call Jehovah's Witnesses a cult, as well as many other things. I ask you though, what religion preaches about the good news of the Kingdom? They mean the kingdom government, but mainly preach that Jehovah will return the earth to it's intended state. If our god is Almighty, then how can he NOT be a man of his word? Look around you at our world. It cannot last in it's current state. People criticize Witnesses mainly because they are too strict for some.
They’re called a cult because of the following reasons
1. You aren’t allowed to have friends outside of the organization, people
who aren’t JWs are referred to as “worldly people”
2. If baptized you are only allowed to get married within the organization
3. Baptized people cannot leave the organization without the risk of being disfellowshipped and shunned by their own family & friends
4. Questioning or not agreeing with Watchtower’s doctrine can have you labeled as an “apostate”(which is a really bad thing to be labeled as)
5. Doing research on the Watchtower or Jehovah Witness that is not approved by them is strictly forbidden
@@jayanimations494 The friend thing is NOT true. They're called 'worldly,' because they believe in things that the masses believe, like Christ being born 12/25, for instance. You want to believe they're a cult, go ahead. I thought cults were places where mind control is practiced.
@@jayanimations494 For #2, it's for obvious reasons. For 3#, when i was in my teens, i studied with a brother that was a bit effeminate. Months after we didn't hear from him, i saw him dancing in gay regalia - Village People leather, etc. - on a NY public access show. His name was at the bottom of the screen. We couldn't believe it. He was disfellowshipped.
That was one thing that made me believe JW was the true clean religion, because the churches kept and keep 'unclean' people.
mr198221 The first is true, dont try to pull a fast one on me. I was born and raised as a JW and constantly in our Kingdom Halls the elders would tell their parents to discourage their kids from making friendships outside of the organization. Also disfellowshipping and shunning people who commit sins or decides to leave is something Jesus would never do because its just horrible to act like a person doesn’t exist and exclude them from family activities and isn’t backed up by bible scriptures
@@jayanimations494 Come on, man. I'm not trying anything funny, just conversing.
Morris voice kinda reminds me of Eazy-E's when he speaks
His singing vocals were similar to Rick James
The only contemporary Prince respected was Larry Blackmon of Cameo. Miles Davis invited both of them to a party in the late 70's.
No religion is good
God was....way before 1870 way before a jehovah witness was thought of way before that man decided to start his own religion
The ONLY good thing I could see about 'The Kid' being a control freak is that it VERY MUCH helped with the air tightness of his bands!...But once Larry Graham got his 'old slimy and nasty religious Watch Tower' hands on him, he became a horse of a TOTALLY DIFFERENT color and began 2 cross WAY TOO MANY boundaries UNNECESSARILY!🤨
