    Awesome!!Here's another bioactive mix-all you have to do is mix Zilla jungle mix mixed with Zoo med Reptisoil mixed with Amazon tree fern fiber mixed with eco earth/Exo terra plantation soil,then add isopods & springtails and biodegradables,instead of Abg mix.Haha,it's all gonna be 95%-100% identical.

    some questions :
    can I just add charcoal from the furnace ?

    • @MikeTytula

  • @mehrdaddwarves3001

    Thank you SO much for this video. I really needed inspiration for my vivariums. Ended using 1 part fir bark, 1 part orchid bark, 1 part sedge, 1 part coconut soil, 1 part aquarium stone, 1 part mos. A really good mix.
    I have a problem though with my "garbagemen". I ordered Trichorhina tomentosa, but i think my geckoes ate them. How long should i have my culture before adding them to the vivarium?

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  7 лет назад +1

      You can add the culture immediately to the viv or you can breed them. I would order two starter cultures, put one in the tank and start breeding them with the other.

  • @MabelGls

    This is quite an old video but extremely helpful. So I have a couple of questions. I have an 18x18x24 exoterra with a young Crested Gecko weighing about 6 grams. I got her in August and the bottom has paper towels for now. You mentioned you need to give isopods and springtails a few weeks to start up. Would I be able to set up the tank (false bottom/substrate/springtails/isopods) and reintroduce the gecko in the same day? (Given that she's a small gecko in a huge tank? lol) Second question: I have one plant in the tank right now and it seems to have had spider mites. I've been spraying the plant daily with soapy water and I've cut off the affected leaves. It looks like that did the trick but I can't be 100% certain. What would you recommend before adding more plants? Or is there something I can add to make sure I don't get spider mites?

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  5 лет назад +1

      Honestly truth be told, I wouldn't put a gecko that small into a tank that size unless you plan on having multiple feeding sites for it around the tank. And yes adding the isopods and springtails should be fine honestly! But they will not be a level where they will clean much of the waste produced by the gecko. I would recommend taking that plant out, and making sure they are all gone.

    • @MabelGls
      @MabelGls 5 лет назад

      Sweet, thanks! Thankfully, my gecko eats super well. Every morning, she's eaten a good amount of food and I offer dubia roaches every 3-4 days. She gobbles them up in less than a minute. lol I'll take that plant out and leave in the fake ones for a few weeks then. Thanks for the advice!! :)

    Hello! Thanks for a great video!
    I was wondering if you know if it might be a good idea to have this kind of layers in the vivarium:
    1. clay aggregate
    2. mesh
    3. active coal
    4. your substrate in the video.
    I am wondering because active coal and charcoal are different? :)
    Also, can you house your springtail culture on charcoal or active coal?
    Thanks for great channel, keep up the good work! :)

    is it possible the spring tails escape from the tank air vents? def dont want that

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  7 лет назад +1

      They can. But they aren't harmful to anything and will likely die if they are outside your tank.

  • @tjtube263
    @tjtube263 7 лет назад

    Wow, that's a lot of springtails!
    I got some locally and I noticed there were some nasty looking compost mites in the coir-based substrate (no charcoal) they came in. How can I destroy the mites without harming the springtails? I'm pretty sure the mites eat the springtails, and I don't want them to contaminate the main habitat.
    I would just do the water trick but the springtails are mostly below the surface and unable to float to the surface freely, so I'm pretty sure they will mostly drown.

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  7 лет назад

      If the mites and spring tails are mixed together there is no way in saving the springtails, I would bake it in the oven.

    • @tjtube263
      @tjtube263 7 лет назад

      Oh well, the mites actually seem to do a better job than the springtails anyway. They're just really hideous to look at..

    I wonder what'd happen if you'd put some grass clippings in to your cultures.. I know when we had a compost pile the sow bugs LOVED the piles of decaying grass clippings.
    Here's a topic for you "why do you use clay pebbles as your foundation in your tank rather than river rock or something similar?"

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  7 лет назад

      it helps with water dispersal also pebbles weigh more and would make the tank extremely heavy!

  • @XwolfbaneXx
    @XwolfbaneXx 7 лет назад

    hey Mike, -- do you think it would be possible for springtails to overpopulate in a way? what's preventing me from introducing microfauna into my tank is knowing my Crested Gecko would not be interested in eating them, so there would be no population control, and thus could continue to reproduce until there's just too many of them around.

    • @MikeTytula
      @MikeTytula  7 лет назад

      No the environment has a carrying capacity, meaning that they will breeding until the environment can't sustain the large pop'n and some will die, you will never have 'too many' haha
