Hearthstone: The Lich King with a 200 Dust Mage Deck

- In this video we take on The Lich King, the final boss of the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion for Hearthstone, with a Mage deck that costs 200 dust to craft!

Strat TL;DR Get Fledgling on board, protect it with spells and minions, while buffing it by attacking. Control the board using spells instead of just trading. Fledgling has 2 required buffs - Windfury and Liquid Membrane (can’t be targeted by enemy spells/hero powers).
Mulligan: Vicious Fledgling and Frostbolt. Any other early plays are good too, but these two are the most important.
Cards to Add: Cabal Lackey + Counterspell combo (to prevent you getting to 1hp in the first place), other control style spells such as Cone of Cold, or even a Blizzard to ensure that on your second last turn you can go face only with everything on your board. If you’re wanting to reduce his HP, Manabind can reduce him to 1 hp, but he will still have his 30 armor (not confirmed).
Cards to Remove: Booty Bay Bodyguard, particularly if you’re looking to replace it with a different taunt, or a control spell. Murloc Raider, Murloc Tidehunter, and River Crocolisk can all be replaced by better value minions, if you have them.

Hey all, I notice there are a lot of people struggling with this one, so here's a blanket reply about some general things you can do to maximise your chances depending on what's going wrong.
The first (which requires you to draw two specific cards straight up), is to add the Kabal Lackey, and Mana Bind. If you can get those two on turn 1, you'll be able to steal the Lich Kings spell he uses on you, which means he will go to 30 armor and 1 health, so 29 less damage you have to deal. It will effect the early game however, as it means one card you draw isn't there to protect the Fledgling, assuming you even need it.
The second way is to add some better/more efficient minions, including Mana Wyrm,
If it helps, you could also add a Molten Reflection, so that the turn after you play the Fledgling, you can summon a copy of it. Just remember to use it before you give it spell immune, and also keep in mind that it once again removes a turn that could be used protecting the Fledgling from minions.
If you find that it's the Lich King's minions ending the run for you, a bit more control such as Cone of Cold, or a bit of delay that can come from a Ghastly Conjurer (giving you an extra Mirror Image) could help. Or changing the Mana Bind to a Counterspell will mean you start on 30 hp if you happen to draw it and the Kabal Lackey on your first turn.
So yeah, there are a few options here - you could use one, or multiple of them, but I hope this helps out those of you still struggling. Good luck to all!
I beat LK after gaining 3 levels from losing with this deck (standard version with no cabal etc) it worked slow but it did thanks man.

SorryTommy J, but I just don't think you're appreciating how lucky you were to dodge the LKs counter-plays to this deck. Turn 3 obliterate/turn 4 chain gang/turn 5 belcher/turn 6 blizzard all shut this deck down instantly and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it.

This does NOT work. I played it using your deck like 10 times. lich king ALWAYS plays 2x 2-3 taunt units + 3-5 taunt that summons another taunt after I kill it and blizzard at round 6.
After 3 hours I got so fucking lucky.. dream hand, perfect opener, dodged obliterate, dodged blizzard, dodged chain gang, dodged glacial shard... but then... MY STUPID FUCKING FLAPPY BIRD WOULDNT GET WINDFURY IN 4 TURNS AND WAS STILL 13 OFF LETHAL. I've never gotten mad in a player vs player or even when i get bullshitted or dced in arena but this shit is so god damn infuriating.

The closest I got to killing him was when he was on 6 HP and I had an answer to any taunt card he would play in the last turn. I lost the Flappy Bird in a 2/3 RNG in my favour to the Val'Kyr Shadowguard.

Yup this deck is complete bullshit , im on my like 100th try and still getting whipped , i dont recommend this deck whatsoever guy got ultimately lucky in everything.

Yeah this is bullshit whenever I play a Fledgling he just uses Destroy a minion and take health as damage every time. Video edited to look like its way easier than it is.
41 attempts before I got the Lackey/Counterspell combo in my opening hand. Then never got a Fledgling or taunts and died immediately. Tried the first deck and he would ALWAYS either drop a taunter in front of my Fledgling, or use a Tempest to freeze it. Finally got a taunter in front of my fledgling, so he just used Obliterate, then kill the Fledgling. This video had absolutely PERFECT RNG. This cannot be done without it.
Guys, this is EASY, you just need to:
* Draw Mirror image in your starting hand (2 cards out of 30)
* Draw Vicious fledgling in your starting hand (2/30)
* After playing your Vicious fledgling you need to dodge him playing:
- Glacial Shard (Freezing it) (2/30)
- Obliterate (Destroying it) ( 2/30)
- Val'kyr Shadowguard (Randomly destroying it, happens 90% of the time) (2/30)
- Saronite Chain Gang (Taunts up, hard to get over) (2/30)
- Sludge Belcher (Taunts up, hard to get over) (2/30)
- Blizzard (Kills and freezes your whole board) (2/30)
* Attack face with the Vicious fledgling and get a windfury from the first attack (1 out of 10 adaptions)
* Attack face with the Vicious fledgling and get only +3 attack from the following (1/10)
* Have good draws (taunts & spells and additional RNG that goes with them)
You have better chances winning the lottery, spending all your money on Hearthstone packs and getting a decent deck...
* Attack face with the Vicious fledgling and get a windfury from the first attack (1 out of 10 adaptions)
^That should be 3/10
Do_odle just throw in 1 or 2 mossy horror for turn 7 and it works like a charm

I got really fucking lucky and on turn 5 or 6 dat icy dumbass used the +2+2 spell on one minion and gave it to me through manabind and i had like 4 or 5 minions with windfury fledge so i killed him next turn with 0 mana +2+2 xd

Global Puur0 we'll make sure you don't ever do quests for 40 reroll them at every chance and if somehow you get 3 that are 40 with no rolls for that day left do one and continue this. 50 or up feel free to do. It might not sound like a lot but it'll add up.

I did it, it works in 2019... same deck, i only added 2 molten giants. You need to have in the starting hand a molten giant , mirror image and vicious. I killed him in round 6.
It only took me 12 hours and 277 tries...

i think i ended up using murlocs to beat half the fights...i tried other, fun stuff..
but it just wasn't working.
It took me two or three hours but I finally did it !!! The trick is to restart everytime you can't get you fledging out by turn 3 or 4 or/and didn't got a windfury by turn 5. In addition don't forget to muligan as long as you don't have a fledging in your starting hand. Good luck to all.
Throw in Kabal Lackey and Mana bind, if you draw them in opening hand, you can knock him down to 1 health with 30 armor still AND have a 2/1 on the field. Just did it and it made the match sooooo much easier.

Frederik Puck If you have Kabal Lackey, and Mana Bind, you can totally do it with Fledgling along with Mana Wyrm and a buttload of early game spells. Still takes a lot of luck, but just restart if you don't draw both Lackey and Secret

I beat most of the fights with cheap murloc decks. Yes, there are a couple of epics needed like warleader and megasaur, but you'll rarely need more than 5 tries to succeed. Most fights were won on the first try. Here's the deck for mage:

Wow thanks man, your one of the first youtuber's, I have come across that gives players a guide for boss fights. Most youtubers I've seen only show you them taking down the Lich King. But don't ever bother to show you the deck list or give tips for the matches. I am definitely subscribing, thank you, for doing what you do! 👍
It took me about 3-4 hours but i did it guys, the key is to get windfury at first hit and then +3 attack twice!
Conditions for this to work: Good opening hand with flappy bird
LK does not have obliterate
Flappy bird gets windfury and good adapt
LK doesn't fuck u over with taunt minions
LK doesn't blizzard
LK doesn't force u to trade to save your sorry ass/loosing tempo

Changed Water elemental to mana wyrm, crocodile to 2-3 bartender tauren, and the 2 mana Murloc to the one with the 1hp Taunt slime . The start must be mana wyrm 2cost Murloc with slime Taunt frostbolt and u need to get the 3mana guy Till turn3 then wf next turn or reset
That turn 6 blizzard is a worse cockblock device than a chastity belt

XD, he always plays this one cost card at the beginning that says gain 100 armor. Essentially 160 health and after the second phase he gets a free ability that says deal 1 damage but that damage increases by 1 every turn. Was able to survive till damage 7 but after that I could no longer control the board nor amor back up.

Well aren't you lucky? When I cheesed through all the classes (except for Warrior because you can't rush on it) he had blizzard 19/20 times on curve and fucked me and if he didn't Blizzard I didn't draw flappy bird in time to win.

For anyone who struggles - you can craft Kabal Lackey (40 dust, Wild) and Counterspell (100 dust, Classic), preferably 2 copies of each and reset the fight till you find the combo. Once you do, you can just use a Control list and kill him after Turn 7 as his minions are pretty weak. You can use Platebreaker to deal 30 dmg to him (DoD, 40 dust) and if you got Alextrasza, additional 15 dmg. Toom me 2 tries after I got the combo on turn 1.
Worked like a charm. Early Windfury, +3 Attack and he's toast
If you want to avoid taking damage at all at the beginning, you’ve gotta have a counter spell secret, a kabal lackey, and a little bit of starting-hand luck!
Tip: draw fledgling turn 3.
Been trying this with just the 200 dust and you absolutely have to get lucky to pull this off.
Not really a good method at all, you'll waste crap loads of time with just the two fledglings. Better off beefing up a deck and playing him later on.
I've never been more infuriated than I am at this very moment. I have been trying to do this for over five hours. You need the perfect game to make this work, and after five hours, I dont think I was born with any luck bonuses, actually I bet I was born with anti-luck on how absolutely wonderful my fight with the lich king has been going for a long time.
I've been playing this deck for over an hour, and all that's happened is I either don't get the right opener, or I do, but he has the answer for everything. I get murloc raider, frostbolt and vicious fledgling, then he counters it with obliterates on my, empty board fledgling, freezes my empty board fledgling, counters with chain gang, or he draws the nuts and I can't compete. Please give me a deck with a higher success rate than winning the lottery, then getting struck by lightning.
the chances of winning are very high you just need fledgling in hand and a turn 1 taunt good 2 drop get windfury on first try then +3attack at least 2x meaniwhile hoping not to get oblirated or blizzarded and he cannot play any taunt and glaciar shard on your fledgling and than EZ win

Been trying for an hour now, closest I've gotten is summoning fledgeling then having it obliterated. Love it when he accenetaly activates counter spell with coin then obliterates. I can't freaking do this, the uther skin isn't even worth the suffering you have to go through.
How many tries did this take you? I'm coming on my second hour straight of trying this, and there is always something that stops me.
Lich King is so broken, I play a taunt, he obliterates it, I lose, so fun, such engaging gameplay

Beating poor balance with poor balance.. amazing.
It's actually pretty easy to beat him If you have the Kabal and Mana Bind on turn 1. Craft 2 platebrakers so one can drop until turn 5. Survive using taunts or removal cards and use platebraker on turn 5 to get rid of his armor, then just deal 1 damage to him and you litteraly beat a 60 hp while being at 1 hp.
Personally, i used Worgen over fledgeling because no rng in adapt. Though it needs attack buffs.
Tried this deck out today. Some things to keep in mind.
1. First move you must have and cast mana bind, and Kabal Lackey.
2. Second move, it is a huge benefit of you can put down mana wyrm and mirror image (will give you a turn or two to kill minions with hero spell, other spells drawn, and further buff mama wyrm)
3. Around turn 4/5 the likelihood of an elemental to drop is high to if you hold on to a polymorph keep it for this turn.
4. Try eliminating all minions with spells, last resort use your minion and solely use mana wyrm for the king and you should be able to finish the match by turn 6.

Have tried for 2 hours and still not success. Theoretically you will need these magical things happen to make the deck work:
1. Flappy bird played on 3rd round with support by others minion.
2. At first hit FLAPPY BIRD MUST get WINDFURY. The 2nd hit MUST have "Can't be targeted by hero spell" to avoid OBLITERATES. And in the 3rd hit, it MUST be +3 attacks.
3. Now praying for these following things don't happen: LK have TAUNT or BLIZZARD or using Galacial Shard to FREEZE your BIRD.
It's simply IMPOSSIBLE guys. DON'T waste your time on this deck.
Instead use combo Kabal Lackey + Counterspell at 1st round then you can kill LK with your TRUE POWER.

after attempting to run it this way 160 times... yes a lot of restarts... you got VERY lucky on how the lich king attacked... I AM RISKING IT FOR THE BISCUIT and believe in the TommyJ deck

Just played this deck for almost 3 hours. The least I got the shield was 14 with his 30 health. Every time I play vicious fledgling, he uses obliterate; absolutely every time. Third day of over 32 hours, 7 different decks, over 100 games, trying to beat with mage. Have used counter spell with Lackey and get the combo once every 16 restarts. Sorry, I'm venting. Took me 4 days and almost 150 games to beat Priest.
I wanted to see what The Lich King would say when I play deathstalker rexxar, but when the game started he used a card that said “deal 2 damage for every minion in there deck” and I had 15 minions

I've never drawn a vicious pledging a single time in my life.
Fun rng in my syndragosa fight, had her at 2 HP, and I only had a 2/2 in my hand after she wiped my board, I put down the 2/2 while shaking my head cos I know I have to restart, and she hero powered my face and left my 2/2 on board with no taunts... and I won.
Couldn't believe it.
If you have Molten Giants and Tar Elementals I suggest replacing something for them. Molten Giants pretty much single handedly won me this fight, got two in my opening hand with a frostbolt as my third card.

Whenever i have a good start, he just obliterates my taunt and kills me...
I can definitelly see this deck winning the lich king with just Vicious fledgling , however yea the problems can arise if you do not get him at time .
Or if you get outnumbered

You can also try Lacky with Counter spell in your mulligan to stop his spell and play him at full health

this deck works from what i've noticed there is no point in continueing if you dont have a turn 1 card (i added zombie chow) took me about 100 tries and a whole lot of luck but its definetly doable just pray for no taunts and no blizzard on turn 6 oh and windfury on your first adept:P

there is a thing called "adapt"
i haven't beaten him yet with this deck, but i did make a couple adjustments of strictly better cards while sticking to the curve he initially set because i do have more than f2p cards.

I had most problem with mage. Murloc, warlock murloc, rouge murloc and shaman murloc. I mean thoose 2 took like 1-2hours. But pala. Warrior, Priest, druid and Hunter was super easy. I went mental with shaman and mage. Took forever to get my combo.

Seriously insane. Turn 5 sludge belcher preventing me from lethaling. Turn 6 blizzard prevent pretty much all damage and kill off half of the board. Turn 7 frostmourne 6 2/6s on board and he removes my fledgling by attacking.
People that are crying that they dont win... He said often enough that you need good rng and you can imagine that when ur only win condition is the fledgling that the deck ist consistent

For lich king Mage I used the kabal lackey and mana bind to steal his the true lich card and change his health to 1, then just mana wyrm and stuff to knock him down
It's a cheesy tactic but it's good
So the Lich King asked "Who built that deck for you?" before Obliterating flappy bird on turn 3. Is that Blizzard's doing, or what? Seems too intentional to be a coincidence.
I just beat him using mana wyrm and 1 vicious... Get taunts and fill the board with minions and use cheap spells to boost the wyrm. You need a lot of luck. I actually survived turn 7 cos I had fatal block spell and was able to kill all his minions and still deal enough damage to kill him that turn.
For those who are complaining about this list: it is possible, but you need a lot of luck. What do you expect of a basically free to play deck?
I beat the Lich King with every class at least twice now and if someone needs help, here is my advice for the classes:
Mage: By far the hardest fight for me, as I didn't have Molten Giants. Those will make it easy. Just play some heal and goodstuff. I only managed to win with Frost Lich Jaina. You can try Kabal Lackey and Counterspell, but this leaves you with a weak hand all the time (and takes forever to set up by restarting sometimes). This is one of the fights where you absolutely need Doomsayer on Turn 7. Animated Armor can save you from his second Hero Power.
Warrior, Rogue, Priest, Warlock: Those are easy (even though, Warrior is a bit harder than the rest). You'll need 2 Stubborn Gastropod and 2 Alarm-O-Bot. The rest of the deck will be your biggest minions (preferably with Taunt). Restart until you have one of each in hand (or one and hope to draw the other). You need to drop the Gastropod on turn 2 and the Bot on turn 3 for this to work. The Lich King will never be able to clear both. On rare occasions, it is even possible without the Gastropod, but it is easier with it. The rest will be good trading and wearing him down, which should be easy with your big minions. Maybe this would also work for Mage, but I did not try it, yet.
Shaman: I went with Evolve and Devolve, even though I only had one Doppelgangster. Use minions that spawn other stronger minions (Nerubian Egg for example) and the Jade Stuff. Simply Devolve his Turn 7 and clear them away with Lightning Storm. Finish him with Bloodlust. Easy win.
Paladin: Murlocs. Tidecaller + Rockpool Hunter is what you want to start with. Warleaders help, but are not required. Put in some buffs for an easier win. Make small trades to minimize the minions he will get. Clear those up with Weapons and Consecration. You HAVE TO WIN BEFORE his Turn 7. Takes some retries.
Hunter: Basically the same as Paladin, but with beasts. This was a very frustrating fight for me, when I tried to set up a huge Scavenging Hyena, because it got killed all the time and I never got Windfury on it. Maybe Murlocs work, too?
Druid: Easy. Ramp, Jade, Big Taunts. Spreading Plague + Strongshell Scavenger is awesome after his Turn 7. Malfurion the Pestilent helps, but is far from necessary.

Ok tried it and worked ... toke awhile over 1h and cant say that had a great time.
Still the cards crafted is for all classes and seems pretty allaround to own so a good strategy and could not think of one myself

It took me 3 hours to do it. You need a strong low cost card as bait for his turn 2 removal spell.
After 100 tries to get that fledgling with windfury and +3 attack with some taunts on board...he just obliterates it

hey thanks for this man i did it yesterday with the lackey counter spell combo, but my friends dont have as many cards as i do and this looks like an easier way if your rng is good
