***** Ye I know. And I'm saying Minecraft offers much more due to it being 3D. So when you get some advanced mods & ones that add a lot of content it easily becomes the best. But just it as vanilla it gets beat by terraria.
***** No offense mate, but that's bullshit. You must have never dived to far into the mod potential in minecraft or just biased of Terraria.. Aether 2.0, Mo creatures, Sonic ether shaders, Smart moving, weather mods, physic mods, dungeon mods, realm mods, rpg mods.. I can go on and on.. The mod literally turn it into an entirely different game. Not only does it add so much more content. But mods like smart moving make it where you can slide, climb walls, dive, crawl, swim legit, parkour vault things, ETC. WEather mods can make tornados build up, meteors, ETC.
Selfish Eyes Sure, Minecraft has 3D. But that doesn't change the fact that it's a game originally made for BUILDING. I find both games to be good, except they are both not even close to similar. Minecraft beats Terraria at everything building, while Terraria always beats Minecraft at exploring and adventure. It's simple. The games were made for different things, and both focus on different things. Minecraft has less (almost everything) in general, but that's because it was made for building. Terraria has less building capabilities, but Re-Logic was focused on adding new mechanics to bosses, fighting, and exploring. Terraria has so many items that it doesn't rely on many mods to survive. Re-Logic is actually already creating Terraria 2 and Terraria Overworld, they're not just staying with one game. Minecraft however, relies HEAVILY on mods, so if for any reason that modding was taken away, Minecraft could easily lose popularity. I do not think that'll happen however, but it's really treading on thin ice.
Starbound has really changed since it came out. More emphasis is centered on questing, giving an equal focus toward combat and exploring as well as mining (with more quests focused on building and farming in development). Both the combat and AI have been overhauled making battles more strategic and exciting. Ships are now upgradeable and can get really massive. Micro dungeons are being worked on that will give you areas to explore underground while mining and will reward you with ore, weapons, or equipment. Bosses have their own arenas now and can no longer be cheesed like they could before, making them much more difficult. The list goes on and on of improvements that have been added and that are currently being worked on.
I disagree with the whole "mining is boring in Starbound" statement. While you mine, you're attacked by monsters, most of which have special abilities which make them challenging to beat; you can stumble upon various underground structures, which are interesting and most of the time give you something, like a blank tech card or a teleporter core (hell, even a weapon).
The video was before big updates to starbound which made the game way better, as it's still pre access (I don't think that is what's it's called but whatever)
+Giorgio Calabrò Terraria also got its fair share of content. 1.3 brought the Lunar Events, with it six bosses (seven if you include the Flying Dutchman), Expert Mode, 800 new items, a couple dozen new enemies, a whole host of changes, a few new random events, and another update is just over the horizon.
and the game still have a boring and repetitive progression trough tiers. Also the quests in general are more boring than the progression system. Terraria still a much more fun and enjoyable experience.
see the thing is that Starbound is NOT supposed to be like Terraria. Starbound is pure exploration and hunting and mining, and on the other hand Terraria is based on combat, bosses and getting gear. Get it?
(UPDATE) now look what we have here. dude get your stuff sorted out. first you say that EVERY ore is so easy to find and not even 3 minutes later you say that you couldn't find the proper equipment, or better yet it was hard for you to find it.
A Plate Of Ravioli he also said the great thing about terraria is that it doesn't teach you anything so you have to read the wiki, about starbound he says he had to read the wiki all the time after the quests.
Probably gonna be ignored because this video is pretty old, but this has to be said from someone who has common sense. Criticizing an early access game is completely fine, but comparing it to a fully complete game that has received 3 MAJOR updates after release is... unfair. Starbound beta VS Terraria 1.3? Terraria wins! Starbound beta VS Terraria beta? Starbound wins. By a long shot.
Not really opinion, look at Terraria beta. It was horrible, starbound beta is comparable to Terraria in its more or less final state. I like both but, with that in mind, starbound by its 1.3 will be at least as good as Terraria 1.3 .good on you popcar for helping me learn thia
All Starbound's mining system needs is convenience and progression upgrades. Then it becomes less tedious. Think of explosives, linear mining, mining bots, automatic quarries, etc.
Honestly I have played both terraria and Starbound and so far I still prefer terraria why? because I feel there is more to explore and more to do.. Even though Starbound has alot of planets and such once you complete the missions at the outpost you practically unlock the best gear from volcanic planets and once that is done, there is no need to play anymore. I prefer terraria because I found personally that the game play lasted longer due to hardmode bosses and Events like Frost moon, Pumpkin moon and stuff like that.. Plus there are way more crafting recipes and things to do in terraria.
Infectious Gaming Productions I still prefer Starbound, but I guess its cos Im more of a builder type player who spends time mostly constructing stuff and collecting furniture.
Infectious Gaming Productions remember starbounds a WIP and its been in betea for 2 years im pretty sure chuckle fish just wants to make a great long game but yea starbound still nes some updates pretty sure it realeases the end of this year
You really need to update this video. Starbound has changed so impressively much. Mining isn't as tedious anymore, there are practically endless amounts of weapons and armor now, the new worlds / stars of places you can travel to is extremely unique and fun to explore and yes, mine, because there are many underground dungeons / structures that make mining exploration genuinely fun. Those underground dungeons / structures do give you items. Also, just in general there far more features and game-play elements than it used to, missions that bring you to different lands, and once you complete those missions they will indeed give you ores, armor, weapons, ETC. There are _so_ many new structures / dungeons on the surface world too, that make the game seem so lively, you can upgrade the ship now to get bigger and "badder" (also the ability to paint the walls and other customizations), the "End Game" in Starbound is becoming much more noticeable, but at a slower rate, because it still is a beta game and has so much more to update and add, the enemies are better and harder the entire time, but still gives you that foot step if you really try. Also, the new music in Starbound really gives the game even more of a atmosphere and lively sense to it than it already does. Please, you need to update this video and give a better comparison.
***** starbound got hunger. A lot more items. Amazing stoeyline. Not that many items but everything can be used in many ways well most of things. Terraria got 7 new bosses? STARBOUND GOT 8! Each requires a lot of exploration and to get to him you must beat dungeon with a lot of secrets.
Thanks for this review/comparison, nice to consider going to Starbound knowing full well that the familiar feeling may be missing: "I just killed the Wall of Flesh, now I can hunt down alters to get ore!" or "hardmode... now I can kill wyverns and craft wings! :D " Great observation of how much those not-mining-dependant elements create a truly adventurous sense of pacing.
***** Play the New version of Starbound it's EXTREMELY different no more sectors and bosses actually drop some stuff + there's a new race that starts with guns (in other words it makes Terraria look like a piece of junk).
"Mining is boring even in Minecraft" I stopped listening here. Mining in Minecraft, even for nothing new, just more of what I've already got... just to clean out every last block of ore I can see in a cave... It's not boring, it's actually very relaxing.
Keiji Ikari Even as a Terraria fan, I agree. Mining in Mine Craft is relaxing, but most of the debate is between action, and content. So most people don't likely look at the relaxing part of the games...
+Skittles_anator Not gonna lie, but the soundtrack in Starbound is Cinematic Quality. I totally agree. When I play terraria, I play it for the gameplay, and silence the music, and play my own playlist. When I listen to Starbound OST... Wow.
NdM HD And have you ever done the "Erchius Mining Facility"? The BGM for it is so fitting. AND, you can get a full 5-15 minutes of the mission and the BGM for free, without having to go mining repeatedly for the resources to listen to it just once.
I think that these two games are for different kinds of people. You show an obvious liking to Terraria, but I personally love Starbound. Terraria gives you one world of a specified size, and that can seem less daunting to some people. All of the game occurs withtin the box that is the world. In Starbound, which has been vastly updated since this video came out, now has quests leading much further. In Terraria, in multiplayer, I always feel like I'm relying on other players to get resources. In Starbound, I did feel this way with my brother up until I unlocked FTL travel. Then we completely split apart and went our own ways, occasionally stopping by to help one another out, and this is what I love about Starbound. There are no limits to the universe. Your ship is your own private little hub, and you're not bound to a specific area on a specific map. They definitely did make Starbound more linear, less about just mining. Starbound lets you go mining and bulding, never having to stop and make sure you didn't break an NPC house or a friend's mythril anvil. You can just go ballistic on an entire world, then take off and nobody would really ever notice, because the universe is just so vast there.
Each race DOES have its own special armor. Every single set, even made of the same material, if made by a different race, will make a different piece of armor with different stats.
While building in starbound can be fun, the issue is that you are never doing it for any reason except for the sake of building. I made a full playthough of the game without once building a house on any world, just to prove it wasn't at all necessary. That's why I feel building in terraria is better. Starbound might have more overall blocks and furniture, but in terraria the structures you build serve an actual purpose in furthering you into the game, because you need to have houses for each of the many merchants, plus being outside at night is much more dangerous in terraria than starbound. To top it off, sometimes goblin armies will try to invade your home base and kill you, so building well defended houses for you village is key. Building in terraria is better than in starbound.
They did make it to where you can go through tiers of Starbound by drops. dungeons and certain enemies drop stronger weapons and with Glad Giraffe added a new "Secondary attack" for 2 handed weapons.
@@garrettelliott5849 we came here for a honest review of both games, not for opinions. Also in old starbound from the video u can find dungeons/underground buildings with aliens etc. Starbound was maybe somehow better than it, but now its a fact that Starbound is better especially with FU mod.
I also want to add that when you said that when you kill the Eater of World you can get a pic to mine towards the orbs. You can also use bombs. Another thing you can do too is fish for the Reaver Shark.
I don't blame you for this because this was released when it was in early access. You should do one now since it's fully released. It's actually pretty fun :O
it's not fair to compare starbound to terraria because starbound is in the beta. terraira is a full release game that has had a band wagon for what 2 or 3 years now. im not trying to fanboy, i love both games but please make an update video.
Rain freeman Starbound may be a beta project, but it's a beta project that has a price, and if people are going to pay money for a beta it's fair they know what they're getting themselves in for at least at the time of purchase. Unless Starbound has recently undergone significant changes, which I am currently unaware of and have not seen any sign of, there's no reason to post an update video. If such an instance occurs, I might. Starbound is stagnant enough to be judged in its current state; not enough changes are being made to invalidate what I've said in the video, hence why I made the video. If this were a game that updated very frequently, a la Space Engineers, I'd have less grounds to do so. Sorry for the lengthy reply, thought I'd clear that up for future purposes.
yeah you have points that i agree with and yes terraria is a better made game at this point but i know where you are coming from in the video explaining how starbound is all about mining while terraira has a better sense of progression. and i know why you say that. *cough 227 hours*. but yes you made things clear and truthful in the video so i cant nark you for that. :)
***** Dude...Starbound is still being updated. They plan a farming/agriculture system so you won't have to mine all the time, you could just sell recourses to merchants for rare ores. Also Starbound doesn't get constant updates, but rather a MASSIVE one every few months. Plus Starbound is made by many of the same developers that made terraria. I'm not ridiculing you or anything just tellin deh factz.
17:38 "You can go walk up and kill Skeletron and think that's the first boss." My first time through, that is exactly what I did. I got early access to the dungeon that way. Doing things out of order.
Starbound didn’t copy terraria, starbound would’ve been already developed when terraria was released. Chucklefish games couldn’t have made a game like starbound in a year. And yes you have to mine in starbound, but it’s not boring, you can mine in space where you’re attacked by different types of mobs, when mining underground there are even more mobs that will attack you. When you kill a boss a weapon won’t drop every time which makes you work for by trying to kill it multiple times, once you get that weapon it does feel rewarding because those boss weapons are more powerful. They make you work for them. Stfu about ores that isn’t a major factor about the game. Bosses drop weapons, omg you said yo couldn’t fight the bone dragon because you didn’t have the right ore, wtf could’ve done. Starbound is only boring to the ones who only believe the game is a copy of terraria, because it’s actually it’s own unique game that is 10x better.
You can drain oceans in Terraria, S'clearly the better game, forget errthing I said in the video, YOU CAN DRAIN. OCEANS. YOU CAN'T DO THAT IN YOUR DADDY'S STARBOUND, BOY.
***** Ummm, once you upgrade the Matter Manipulator to Mark III, it collects liquid... water, oil, & LAVA. So... sorry, but you can drain the ocean and then carry that puppy away with you.
I know you all probably mean well but if you couldn't guess from the goofy nature of my comment, coupled with its blatant, nonsensical rejection of the entire video and its arguments, I wasn't serious -nor do I believe that Terraria is the best game because I can drain fucking oceans.
Actually you can. if you get the matter manipulator upgade for collecting liquids you can drain lava pools, oil, water, poison, etc. it seems like someone hasn't played their starbound in a while B). rekt
Winter Grox that’s what role playing is for. You can easily give yourself blue skin, go on to another account and build a space ship, and pretend to be a specific race.
As someone who has put over 400 hours into both Terraria and Starbound, I'd love to see this video updated once Starbound hits 1.0. They've done some great improvements and addressed many of your complaints since your video was published, and I'd like to hear your take on it. For me (if anyone cares) I loved Terraria. I loved the progression, the flawless weapons, the bosses; everything about it, really. I mean if I didn't love it, how would I have put that much time into it? But once I beat the Moon Lord and maxed out my gear, there really wasn't anything left. The challenge was gone. So I restarted and played as a new character with the STELLER RPG mod, and had a blast with that. But really, what I found with Terraria was everyone had the same stories. There wasn't much in the way of emergent gameplay. Starbound, as it is now, is better with that. It's not Far Cry, but it has it's instances of emergent gameplay that make for great stories. This one time I had crept into the floating pirate ship of the Avian I had randomly found on a planet. Everyone was peaceful and didn't seem to mind me helping myself to the various chests and containers scattered around. Suddenly this jerk Vomit Hawk flittered into the same hole I had drilled in their hull and it started puking tomato juice on everyone. A royal battle started below decks. I tried to help kill the thing but only ended up hitting a pirate that jumped in front of my pistol. So now they were all after me. I cleared them out, including the Vomit Hawk, and I went above decks, where I was cheerily greeted by the captain. I finished looting the ship and quietly slunk away, wondering if the above deck crew ever went below and wondered at the slaughter... Basically both games have their strengths. Terraria is way more polished, but then it's a completed game. Starbound needs to work on their combat, but that's being addressed in the next update. Give it time; both are great games, and comparing the two is like comparing Minecraft to Terraria. Apples and Oranges, people. Enjoy them for what they are! That said, I do still want to hear what your opinion is when the game exits Beta.
well, even though terraria and starbound are kind of similar games, you dont compare them. yes its boring getting to high gear, yes in terraria you cant even build a simple house without getting spamed by enemies that want you dead and come out of nowhere, but maybe starbound is supposed to be calm, (after all, its not about the destiny, its about the journey, about what you,ll build there) maybe terraria is suposed to be a rage game with a lot of action. i moved from terraria to starbound simply because i couldnt do much there without getting slaughtered every 5 minutes in hardcore, also the hardcore ruines the whole world (never fight the wall of fesh guys) starboud is, as weird as it sounds, more realistic, even if just a microscopic bit more, still! the lighting is great, the graphics are sweet, better sounds (terraria doesnt even have walking sounds) the ability to travel arround in the galaxy, makes the game practicaly infinite, which is a huge plus, and the random randomness-ness add to the replay ability! MASIVELY! the game is still in Beta, and it already competes with terraria, so thats a good sign. the things we see and experience right now is NOT the finished game, that means, its a skeleton right now, let it grow some flesh and skins ontop of the bones, than it might be even better than terraria! btw terraria is bugged as fuck! a lot of things they should,ve done different, like the inventory! but i do remember having a great time when i first bought terraria and played it with my friend ... well, that was before the devs put a tone of crap into the game where you cant keep up at all! and then there is the music of starbound ... soooo nice, but always makes me soooo sleepy, like i actualy want to put my arms and head onto the desc and just fall asleep, while listening to theese soundtracks, oh well.
That's the point of Terraria hardmode... For it to be challenging. I remember my first time in hardmode, I constantly died with no end. But, I kept playing and collecting and grinding, and now hardmode is easy to me XD. Now I just focus on building stuff.
See, the thing I like about starbound as far as mining goes, is that you can take out multiple blocks at once, allowing you to mine around much faster. And upgrading the matter manipulator makes mining really fun to me, because you can basically just walk through dirt. Also, upgrading the ship is an awesome thing.
HyperNovaGenesis Ofcourse you can dummy... What do you think beta or early access is for? It's there to give the devs feedback and criticism is feedback too.
+TheKoffiemok comparing it to a game that is entirely complete though, is bullshit. If you compare starbound beta VS terraria beta, starbound would win by a long shot.
Pop Car you can still compare them. If the developers see something like this they will know how to make the game more unique. If somebody points out how one thing is almost the same as another they will know to change it and make it more unique.
My opinions on mining in Terraria, Minecraft, and Starbound. Starbound: No music, too quiet, really creepy let me out. Minecraft: Boring with nothing special compared to the surface. It's pretty entertaining if you find a good cave. Terraria: Tons of new and different content and is very fun.
Ha, "new" content. Been waiting for 1.3 for a long long time, ive done pretty much everything in Terraria, extracted everything from my world and there's really nothing for me to do until 1.3
someguy somekid Do you have a farm of every potion? A battle arena? explored every pixel of the world? beaten every boss inculding the duke and the king slime? did you get the rare items and did you make achievements for yourself to make your game funny? No? Why are u here again? oh yeah complaining about having done everything in terraria, what about you start again with another class? "been waiting for 1.3 for a long long time" it's like they announced it a year ago (false), do you know what "waiting long long time" is? Buy cubeworld, look at the last update, June 2012? And since then they said new update coming, we are 2015 and we got nearly 0 hype.
Is the specials edition come with a better laser pick than laser pick mark 2? Because I have laser pick mark 2 and I want to know if the laser pick included in the special is any better?
Man, Starbound sure has become more expansive since this videos. Everything you could hope for was either added or could be fulfilled through the communities mods that they release on the website. Like that full ship customization.
i come from the future, baskin in the glory of terraria 1.3 today we have over 150000 people playing terraria, meanwhile starbound barely manages to break 2000,thats like a 7500% more active player base, currently the top 3 most popular game on steam. what is chucklefish gonna do? release massive expansion pack sized free updates and heavily discount their game for the masses to enjoy? LOL! by the time starbound gets out of early access ill be playing terraria 2/otherworld. so much for starbound being the terraria killer, the hunter has become the hunted =)
TheKalimanMX Starbound is much better than Terraria for designers, personally the amount of furniture/ electronics/ biomes/ blocks in Starbound provide vastly greater options for building bases and cities. Terraria on other hand, is currently better in the RPG aspect, as it is a complete game with a complete progression system. However, Starbound does has the potential to be much better than Terraria.
+All the Way Butttttttttttt there aren't many players and also Terraria is competing with minecraft and minecraft is still popular today starbound on the other hand doesn't has that many players and isn't good enough to beat good games like Mario or SSB4 And starbound isnt very well known... Just my theory...
If you think player counts are the main factor in deciding if games are worth their salt, well you are looking at the wrong place. There are many niche games which do not boast thousands of players online but they do offer a game that a particular group of players enjoy. It is all down to individual preferences.
id be mad too if starbound pulled a cubeworld on me after paying $15. chucklefish is probably sipping margaritas with wollay on the caiman islands enjoying your millions of dollars.
starbounders get very defensive about their game, the SB steam forums are just a huge hugbox where any disent and criticism will get you banned by the admins. something that really helped catapult terraria as the #1 most played non valve game was the recent steam integration feature. gathering friends for terraria has never been easier,no more messing with IPs,ports or hamachi, its literally 1 click away to join games now =)
The console edition of Terraria excels in regards to teaching the player what to do. It was the first edition I got to play and I picked up the mechanics and basics quite easily because of its exclusive tutorial level. In addition to this it has a help screen that tells you about Hardmode and how to reach it. By 'how to reach it' I mean it just hints to a boss in the Underworld. I also thought The Guide was pretty handy. His dialogue would give you hints on where to go depending on your progress. If you had no houses built he'd tell you about NPCs that could move in, tell you about crystal hearts and how they improve your life et cetera. I think what Terraria does is give the player time to explore and improve by themselves. The first boss in the game can spawn naturally if the player has progressed to a certain point, got enough health, armor, NPCs. I don't know much about Starbound (even though I own the game) so this video really helped explain some of the differences. I agree that being able to customize your own ship would be pretty sick m8.
I wouldn't say we should make a comparison to terraria and starbound YET. Starbound is still in beta mode as in the next few months will change dramatically, after they add all this stuff THEN you can judge about the two games and there differences.
im not sure if youve done another but i can promise you a remake of this video would be completely different. there is alot of crafting, but theres also a shit ton more to do now
edit: i've just read a comment that ships are now upgradeable. awesome! I've not played SB yet, but have to admit, the "nitpicking" idea of customising the ships...that'd be a logical addition, IMO. if you're getting loads of resources, you should be able to change and upgrade your ship. and space battles between ships or global bombing (which could make mining REALLY easy) seem like a fantastic way to make this unique to Terraria...you could even have Lovecraftian sized space bosses that you could fight with your ship, or with other ships belonging to other players.
And this is why they gave us colonies, challenge gates, bigger caves, more interesting bosses and are working on adding more interesting weapons, vehicles, and better armors.
In starbound, bosses sometimes have mini enemies that drop pixels when killed, those pixels can be used to buy weapons from VENDORS, who sell GOOD weapons.
2:47 "Mining in any game isn't fun, people don't like mining for resources." :p I understand where you're coming from though, I expect you said that because you're just feeling so jaded that you spent hours of your life mining for the sake of... being able to mine some MOAR ^_^ But it was good to hear Starbound is more grindy with its mining. It's all about being in the right mood for it, hence why so many people love this genre, but it isn't for everyone.
Might have been applicable when this video was made, but remember Starbound at that time, despite being playable, wasn't actually *released*. It is now, and the differences between the two at launch are... well, massive. Could definitely and probably accurately be said that Terraria inspired Stabound, but they certainly took it in a different direction.
well, then im glad i got terraria lol. I bought it not knowing at first that starbound was a completely different game. and when i found out i didnt buy the game I had seen a youtuber play, i was a little disappointed. However, after some research and your video, im happy with my purchase.
The developer of terraria is the same developer of star bound so it's not a clone it's just he wanted to modify terraria but if he did that would change the hole game so he made an new game star bound so he can do the modifying on that.this is what I think
Personally, I prefer Terraria to Starbound (owning and playing a lot of both of the games) I feel that Terraria has so much replay value and I can just keep playing. The other good thing about Terraria is that you start a world, play a bit, and eventually do loads then you've done everything there is to do in the game. Then a great big massive update comes out, and you start again. Done everything there is to do, another update comes out, start again and so one. I have played so much Terraria but there are still loads of things I have yet to do. With Starbound, I find it quite repetitive, mine, get armour weapons, kill boss, go to new sector, mine, get better tier armour and weapons which are kind of the same, kill boss, go to new sector, mine, get armour and weapons which are kind of the same, and so one. But with Terraria, as the weapons and armour go on, they get special abilities, and do new things, and give you more options about what class you want to be. I just feel that there is so much more you can do in Terraria. If you read the whole of this comment and are still going, you are a God with the biggest patience, I don't write this much on my exams. But that's why I think Terraria in my opinion is better that Starbound.
Starbound: Focus on Mining, Exploration and Crafting -An entire Universe can be Explored with different ores, NPC's, Biomes and Structures -No Class Limitation: Every Weapon Type with every Armor Proves Useful -Different Races that have different Armor, Space-Ships and different dialog -Armor,cosmetics and Pet/s cant be changed in color or Style -No further Bonuses then Armor -One Pet, which isn't choosable on your Spaceship, Enemies can be captured and used as Pets but are able to die -Less focus on building, more focus on Decorating/more Decorations Available -Lots of Tiers which require Mining,Exploration and Crafting to Advance -A (mediocre) Story is Available with custom levels and items (mostly cosmetic) -Lack in Bosses due to boring combat (for example: just flip 4 switches 3 times over) Terraria: Focus on Combat and Building -Only one World (Technically) can be explored, which might not have all biomes and Items -Class Limitation: A Weapon of a Different Class will be a lot weaker -Only Race is Human, no hard choice "oh god what spaceship do i want" --Armor, cosmetics and Pets can be changed in color -Accessories can give different bonuses -Loads of Pets which can be equipped like Armor, but don't help in combat (except summons) -More focus on Building, less focus on Decoretions/less decorations Available -2 Tiers: Pre-hard-mode and Hard-mode, which can be obtained trough bosses, fishing etc. -No "real" Story, only tied to bosses or theories -Bosses Change Attack Pattern after %50 percent Health loss to change up the combat I think i summed up the differences pretty well, but if you can think of others please write them in the Answers.
I'm playing both game, when i wanna play something peacefulk survival with exploration, starbound it is. And if i wanna beat shit out the enemy, terraria... If bored for both, just try the mods, especially terraria with their calamity mods.
I enjoyed and noted the points brought up, but a remake of this video would be good as many things have been added to Starbound while Terraria has slowed down
The only thing I'm glad about this is that Starbound and Terraria players aren't turning out like Minecraft vs Terraria players...

I've played terraria for so long and I still use the wiki XD
I've played almost 1000 hours .-.
I have 27........CHRISTMAS NOOB :)
Plebian.
tardis tardis Yirmir has like 2000+ QQ
Same, no matter how much you play Terraria, you will still use the wiki :p
***** Do you mean starbound or what?
Yeh men it isnt the same aince the update Nightly test build.
***** Well, you misspelled starbound, I still totally agree.
Stew Hvidston same with terraria
I was too lazy to read all of that
I disagree with the whole "mining is boring in Starbound" statement.
Early access*
Can't edit on iPhone :P
When mining I found a rainbow breathing unicorn got it in a capture pod trains it then made it kill deadwing
Eric Pazder What the absolute ****, thats too awesome
Arturas Vellemaa YAH!!!!!!!!
Re-do this video, because everything you said as been added (Spaceship upgrade and many more quests for example)
Tanmang42 He just has to redo the video for both xD
and the game still have a boring and repetitive progression trough tiers. Also the quests in general are more boring than the progression system.
Terraria still a much more fun and enjoyable experience.
In your opinion.
Mattybot 3000 if you find fun in clicking trough game world objects until you fill a bar. More power to you.
Why can't most of us agree that these two games are both awesome? They're both pretty kickass games in my opinion!
***** Exactly there both different but similar in game-play styles
ikr people are talking how the games sucks there both awsome but no they just dont wanna listen
+Luke leggat because its so zoomed out it hurts my eyes HAHA.
+Colby
I agree. but personally, the two biggest differences are
1.Terraria has a longer playthrough time
2.Starbound has the soundtrack
True guys, I don't like the soundtrack either for Terraria.
see the thing is that Starbound is NOT supposed to be like Terraria. Starbound is pure exploration and hunting and mining, and on the other hand Terraria is based on combat, bosses and getting gear. Get it?
(UPDATE) now look what we have here. dude get your stuff sorted out. first you say that EVERY ore is so easy to find and not even 3 minutes later you say that you couldn't find the proper equipment, or better yet it was hard for you to find it.
well technically terraria requires a shit ton of grinding to get ONE item
on the other hand about starbound... eh.. sorry i dont really know about it
oh no its sturning into terrria vs minecraft 0:
A Plate Of Ravioli he also said the great thing about terraria is that it doesn't teach you anything so you have to read the wiki, about starbound he says he had to read the wiki all the time after the quests.
uh you dont just combat in terraria, you can hunt, mine, explore worlds and the underworld. and other stuff
By a long shot.
opinion
Not really opinion, look at Terraria beta. It was horrible, starbound beta is comparable to Terraria in its more or less final state. I like both but, with that in mind, starbound by its 1.3 will be at least as good as Terraria 1.3 .good on you popcar for helping me learn thia
Diamando And yes it is an opinion. Some people probably enjoyed it more than starbounds even if most people didn't it's still not a fact.
ChaosGamer thanks for proving me wrong.
+Pop Car Theres no terraria beta
I feel like this video needs an update due to the amount of stuff that has happened in starbound....just saying
+Carolyn C (ShadowWolf) Agreed! Cant wait for the 1.0 release! I'm most excited about the pet function.
+Jorge Martinez I'm mostly excited for the fossils and the new missions :D
Terraria had updates too.
+George Christidis that's cool
+George Christidis maybe
Very informative and helpful! Great video! :D
I don’t know who you are but based on your videos you don’t have an interest in this lol

@@kinetic_krown yes lmao!!!

Star Fox I recommend Terraria. It’s way less linear and way more replayable
@@StarFox24 GET TERRARIA
You know this isn't a discussion, right? This is just hammering on Starbound, nothing more.
I've never played starbound, is he wrong at all?
+TheJepep yup. but now this video is outdated all the way, and since 1.0 came out, SB is a way more refined game :)
Knobstackle Ya, when i posted i finally looked at the video date and its 2014 :P
+Knobstackle and more boring
David Rahd And.. why do you even bother commenting?
The guide in terraria tells you to get lenses to create a suspicious looking eye terraria does tell you what the first boss is
All Starbound's mining system needs is convenience and progression upgrades. Then it becomes less tedious. Think of explosives, linear mining, mining bots, automatic quarries, etc.
Uriel de Vries Fucking yes
That sounds amazing
***** So for humans ubiquitously, then?
Infectious Gaming Productions Well Terraria has been out for several more years than Starbound so it makes sense for it to have more content.
Please, you need to update this video and give a better comparison.
gr8 r8 m8 I b8
***** starbound got hunger. A lot more items. Amazing stoeyline. Not that many items but everything can be used in many ways well most of things. Terraria got 7 new bosses? STARBOUND GOT 8! Each requires a lot of exploration and to get to him you must beat dungeon with a lot of secrets.
+Kuba Markowski Starbound has a lot of items, Terraria a little less... But Terraria has more types of items and such :)
SkyPenguinGames _
But weapons in starbound have special abilities :P Also floran likes to ssssssssstab who doesnt?
You should re-do this video now that Starbound is officially released
and otherworld
adsız kanal the fuck? Otherworld hasnt been released yet, Are you high?
I do appreciate that tens of thousands have viewed this video but uh...y'all...you do know we have other vidyas, right? C-cuz we do...
***** I think everyone likes this one best XD
***** The only reason I mine in video games...
Is for the caves I find.
Thanks for this review/comparison, nice to consider going to Starbound knowing full well that the familiar feeling may be missing: "I just killed the Wall of Flesh, now I can hunt down alters to get ore!" or "hardmode... now I can kill wyverns and craft wings! :D "
Great observation of how much those not-mining-dependant elements create a truly adventurous sense of pacing.
***** After the new Terraria update....play them both and do this again......see what you think now.
***** Play the New version of Starbound it's EXTREMELY different no more sectors and bosses actually drop some stuff + there's a new race that starts with guns (in other words it makes Terraria look like a piece of junk).
I thought mining in StarBound was actually really fun because the chests and the loot you could get : /
Since this video was made Starbound has made MAYOR improvements! Maybe he should compare the two again when the 1.0 update for starbound comes out!
+Yrrah Landman "mayor" ?
+Derpyy Wulf whoops... I meant major. :P
+Yrrah Landman Starbound its in developent now but terraria its complete dude I think that its best Terraria
+SergiortYT The full release of starbound is almost coming out! I think both games are good!
Terraria is da BEST
"Mining is boring even in Minecraft"
I stopped listening here.
Keiji Ikari i don't want to relax while playing a adventure game .
It boring when I mine for to long
Keiji Ikari true
Pvp in minecraft ( Sword PvP ) Is mainly just Spamming The ABSOLUTE HELL out of leftclick
Starbound is more refined now. Hell, I'd say its more refined than terraria.
Oh, and at the Steam page, they announced that they will let you be space cops in 1.4.0 update
Noice
starbound has way better music
Skittles_anator Soo truee!!
Christopher Scott terraria's music is crap
+Phutawan Worrapeakun
I agree. A fucking xylophone? Really Red?
+Skittles_anator
Not gonna lie, but the soundtrack in Starbound is Cinematic Quality. I totally agree.
When I play terraria, I play it for the gameplay, and silence the music, and play my own playlist.
When I listen to Starbound OST... Wow.
NdM HD
And have you ever done the "Erchius Mining Facility"?
Starbound became waaaay better now
No
Legit thought penguinz0 was narrating the video
They did make it to where you can go through tiers of Starbound by drops. dungeons and certain enemies drop stronger weapons and with Glad Giraffe added a new "Secondary attack" for 2 handed weapons.
not wanting to be rude, but ...
Just look at the video date :P
+Crash Shuyin I know, Im just telling if no one already did.
I confess, Starbound Is a laughingstock to me
I would say... Starbound is NOT a clone... why?
Terraria isn't the only game that is allowed to be 2D...
Starbound is abandoned. Terraria is more than alive. That's all
He just hates on starbound in this video
360shutentutengamer so? He just expresses his opinion.
Another thing you can do too is fish for the Reaver Shark.
no shit...but i think starbound it's way better.....
I don't blame you for this because this was released when it was in early access. You should do one now since it's fully released. It's actually pretty fun :O
it's not, the quests made it worst and even more repetitive.
it's not fair to compare starbound to terraria because starbound is in the beta. terraira is a full release game that has had a band wagon for what 2 or 3 years now. im not trying to fanboy, i love both games but please make an update video.
and just so you know iv'e put 227 something hours in terraria.
Rain freeman I appreciate the feedback though, I often feel like there's nothing but dead space when I post videos :/
Keep in mind that Starbound is still in early acces.
pedro09pm play nighty
pedro09pm and always will be
pedro09pm If it is for sale then it is open to critique
It's been in beta for about a year now.
Geometry Dash Tinymanx ikr
Dude you didnt even played terraria :/, terraria bosses almost everytime dont drop items.
You can drain oceans in Terraria, S'clearly the better game, forget errthing I said in the video, YOU CAN DRAIN. OCEANS. YOU CAN'T DO THAT IN YOUR DADDY'S STARBOUND, BOY.
***** That does not make the best game!!! so what if you can drain the ocean!!! starbound still has plenty of things that make it really good!!!!
You can drain oceans in starbound too just break the backround wall
***** Ummm, once you upgrade the Matter Manipulator to Mark III, it collects liquid... water, oil, & LAVA. So... sorry, but you can drain the ocean and then carry that puppy away with you.
I know you all probably mean well but if you couldn't guess from the goofy nature of my comment, coupled with its blatant, nonsensical rejection of the entire video and its arguments, I wasn't serious -nor do I believe that Terraria is the best game because I can drain fucking oceans.
Actually you can. if you get the matter manipulator upgade for collecting liquids you can drain lava pools, oil, water, poison, etc. it seems like someone hasn't played their starbound in a while B). rekt
Terraria 1.4.5 new patch in 2025 , starbound rip
Obiously Starbound wins cuz you can choose a race, you got a space ship and you can go to other planets :v
you again? rlly?
+buldr max Huh? I don't renember you! Do I know about you? Or is just you change your picture and your nickname?
Pfft only by that you thing suckbound is good :v
Please compare Starbound Upbeat Giraffe with Terraria
***** New bosses, and so much more things added, like thousands of things added.
***** Terraria, 1.3 update was huge
Glad Giraffe is out guys!
+Minh Tran With an awsome combat update :D
Well, here's a channel I never need to visit again.
Everything you said was right all of it. I agree completely and overall I find terraria more enjoyable
Well, thanks for letting me know!
Been meaning to get into Starbound, this video helped a lot in knowing what to expect. Thanks my guy!
well, even though terraria and starbound are kind of similar games, you dont compare them.
yes its boring getting to high gear,
yes in terraria you cant even build a simple house without getting spamed by enemies that want you dead and come out of nowhere,
but maybe starbound is supposed to be calm, (after all, its not about the destiny, its about the journey, about what you,ll build there)
maybe terraria is suposed to be a rage game with a lot of action.
i moved from terraria to starbound simply because i couldnt do much there without getting slaughtered every 5 minutes in hardcore, also the hardcore ruines the whole world (never fight the wall of fesh guys)
starboud is, as weird as it sounds, more realistic, even if just a microscopic bit more, still!
the lighting is great, the graphics are sweet, better sounds (terraria doesnt even have walking sounds) the ability to travel arround in the galaxy, makes the game practicaly infinite, which is a huge plus, and the random randomness-ness add to the replay ability! MASIVELY!
the game is still in Beta, and it already competes with terraria, so thats a good sign. the things we see and experience right now is NOT the finished game, that means, its a skeleton right now,
let it grow some flesh and skins ontop of the bones, than it might be even better than terraria!
btw terraria is bugged as fuck! a lot of things they should,ve done different, like the inventory!
but i do remember having a great time when i first bought terraria and played it with my friend ... well, that was before the devs put a tone of crap into the game where you cant keep up at all!
and then there is the music of starbound ... soooo nice, but always makes me soooo sleepy, like i actualy want to put my arms and head onto the desc and just fall asleep, while listening to theese soundtracks, oh well.
That's the point of Terraria hardmode... For it to be challenging. I remember my first time in hardmode, I constantly died with no end. But, I kept playing and collecting and grinding, and now hardmode is easy to me XD. Now I just focus on building stuff.
you can make your ship bigger if you do enough quests in the outpost and pay diamonds to the pinguin bay
i
See, the thing I like about starbound as far as mining goes, is that you can take out multiple blocks at once, allowing you to mine around much faster. And upgrading the matter manipulator makes mining really fun to me, because you can basically just walk through dirt. Also, upgrading the ship is an awesome thing.
You really can't criticize Starbound, it's still a beta game...
HyperNovaGenesis Ofcourse you can dummy...
What do you think beta or early access is for?
It's there to give the devs feedback and criticism is feedback too.
TheKoffiemok agree
+TheKoffiemok comparing it to a game that is entirely complete though, is bullshit. If you compare starbound beta VS terraria beta, starbound would win by a long shot.
+Pop Car I never did or said so. What I'm saying is that you may or even should give criticism to an early access game so they can improve it.
Pop Car you can still compare them. If the developers see something like this they will know how to make the game more unique. If somebody points out how one thing is almost the same as another they will know to change it and make it more unique.
there IS a mod called "fully customizable ship" btw
My opinions on mining in Terraria, Minecraft, and Starbound.
Starbound: No music, too quiet, really creepy let me out.
Minecraft: Boring with nothing special compared to the surface. It's pretty entertaining if you find a good cave.
Terraria: Tons of new and different content and is very fun.
Actually Starbound has the best soundtrack by far, just check the website, and yes you can hear it in game.
Oh shit you have my respect bro. Still trying to kill plantera as summoner (without succes).
Is the specials edition come with a better laser pick than laser pick mark 2? Because I have laser pick mark 2 and I want to know if the laser pick included in the special is any better?
I stopped watching at 3 mins. So much invalid stuff, it was actually pissing me off tbh.
Man, Starbound sure has become more expansive since this videos. Everything you could hope for was either added or could be fulfilled through the communities mods that they release on the website. Like that full ship customization.
i come from the future, baskin in the glory of terraria 1.3
today we have over 150000 people playing terraria, meanwhile starbound barely manages to break 2000,thats like a 7500% more active player base, currently the top 3 most popular game on steam.
what is chucklefish gonna do? release massive expansion pack sized free updates and heavily discount their game for the masses to enjoy? LOL!
by the time starbound gets out of early access ill be playing terraria 2/otherworld.
so much for starbound being the terraria killer, the hunter has become the hunted =)
It is all down to individual preferences.
id be mad too if starbound pulled a cubeworld on me after paying $15.
chucklefish is probably sipping margaritas with wollay on the caiman islands enjoying your millions of dollars.
starbounders get very defensive about their game, the SB steam forums are just a huge hugbox where any disent and criticism will get you banned by the admins.
something that really helped catapult terraria as the #1 most played non valve game was the recent steam integration feature.
gathering friends for terraria has never been easier,no more messing with IPs,ports or hamachi, its literally 1 click away to join games now =)
You say starbound is boring but the fact that your running around and shooting in the sky in terraria doesn’t convince me
this is a very very biased review.
Game Journo says: _metroidvania_
Me: You have no idea how game genres work, right?
I love starbound more than terraria, it has more customability so I feel more Immersed
2:34 The Bosses DO drop Weapons its very rare
"Why Terraria is better than Starbound in almost every way: A Discussion"
In starbound, you can explore npc villages to get ore and good weapons, mini-bosses in starbound drop very high-powered weapons very often.
hey give it to starbound they are still in beta version
dude the way you explains things is so good you defently deserve more subs and you just earned +1 sub
He seems to lack expirience to starbound
Starbound is a lot easier for first-timers to get into, at least with the most recent update
Starbound is not mostly mining if you play it properly :/
I agree that being able to customize your own ship would be pretty sick m8.
hey i like mining
Said skill sets exist? I have a glitch endgame Char. with doom lord armour and have noticed NO extra skills
Starbound 4 life
Griffin M terraria for invinccibility
Dr. ZomGaming bwahaha
Who else got triggered when he killed the Avian at 11:06 ? Just sitting there chillin, then BOOM, axe to the back of the head.
Starbound is amazing, and Terraria is amazing.
I can't tell what game is better.
Same feeling
I wouldn't say we should make a comparison to terraria and starbound YET. Starbound is still in beta mode as in the next few months will change dramatically, after they add all this stuff THEN you can judge about the two games and there differences.
im not sure if youve done another but i can promise you a remake of this video would be completely different. there is alot of crafting, but theres also a shit ton more to do now
Terraria is more polished, star bound has more potential.
3 years later, how do you think this comment holds up?
edit: i've just read a comment that ships are now upgradeable.
Just a note, terraria was released in 2011. That's 3 years ago based on your video's upload date, not 2 years ;).
Have u played the new update? Did some improvements on what u complained about
Racial abilities arent in... after being out for... how long was it? 1.5 - 2 years?
k all arguments aside, look at the like/dislike ratio
balanced enough for a thanos refrence.
In starbound, bosses sometimes have mini enemies that drop pixels when killed, those pixels can be used to buy weapons from VENDORS, who sell GOOD weapons.
you deserve way more subscribers, therefore, i subscribed :)
You got a dank ass name, dawg.
2:47 "Mining in any game isn't fun, people don't like mining for resources." :p
I understand where you're coming from though, I expect you said that because you're just feeling so jaded that you spent hours of your life mining for the sake of... being able to mine some MOAR ^_^ But it was good to hear Starbound is more grindy with its mining.
I reaaaally want you to re-do this once Starbound 1.0 comes out. Everything has changed so much..
The developer of terraria is the same developer of star bound so it's not a clone it's just he wanted to modify terraria but if he did that would change the hole game so he made an new game star bound so he can do the modifying on that.this is what I think
A lot of things shown in this vid were removed. Like the Bone Dragon and the uranium his character was nearby.
what do you think of the new pleased giraffe update. also known as the colony update.
The grappling hook is better in Starbound. Was this made before you could upgrade your ship to make it bigger and before they added more quests?
Deciding which game to buy. Are alll the point in the video still valid with respect to current version of the two games?
Starbound: Focus on Mining, Exploration and Crafting
-An entire Universe can be Explored with different ores, NPC's, Biomes and Structures
-No Class Limitation: Every Weapon Type with every Armor Proves Useful
-Different Races that have different Armor, Space-Ships and different dialog
-Armor,cosmetics and Pet/s cant be changed in color or Style
-No further Bonuses then Armor
-One Pet, which isn't choosable on your Spaceship, Enemies can be captured and used as Pets but are able to die
-Less focus on building, more focus on Decorating/more Decorations Available
-Lots of Tiers which require Mining,Exploration and Crafting to Advance
-A (mediocre) Story is Available with custom levels and items (mostly cosmetic)
-Lack in Bosses due to boring combat (for example: just flip 4 switches 3 times over)
Terraria: Focus on Combat and Building
-Only one World (Technically) can be explored, which might not have all biomes and Items
-Class Limitation: A Weapon of a Different Class will be a lot weaker
-Only Race is Human, no hard choice "oh god what spaceship do i want"
--Armor, cosmetics and Pets can be changed in color
-Accessories can give different bonuses
-Loads of Pets which can be equipped like Armor, but don't help in combat (except summons)
-More focus on Building, less focus on Decoretions/less decorations Available
-2 Tiers: Pre-hard-mode and Hard-mode, which can be obtained trough bosses, fishing etc.
-No "real" Story, only tied to bosses or theories
-Bosses Change Attack Pattern after %50 percent Health loss to change up the combat
I think i summed up the differences pretty well, but if you can think of others please write them in the Answers.
I'm playing both game, when i wanna play something peacefulk survival with exploration, starbound it is. And if i wanna beat shit out the enemy, terraria...
If bored for both, just try the mods, especially terraria with their calamity mods.
have you even looked at the nightly builds? you can upgrade your ship up to tier 8 which is REALLY big
how did you get that candle type thing handing from your head?
I enjoyed and noted the points brought up, but a remake of this video would be good as many things have been added to Starbound while Terraria has slowed down
