    Thank you Amy for another great vidio. Struggling with this one but determined to get there. I have been playing for about two years but not happy with the way I do vibrato. You explain things very well . The main thing is I can't seen to relax my hand enough but will keep trying. I am 74 and love every minute of learning violin

    Thanks a million for your instructional video. I have been struggling for ever with vibrato but your tips have made it come together. The most helpful tips have been to match bow speed with the vibrato you want to achieve and visualizing a popping feeling when placing a finger on the finger board prior to playing vibrato and not pushing too hard on the string. No other videos I’ve watched have mentioned these two things. Cheers.

    How do you get your third and fourth finger to be pointing back so that when you rock, you're rocking your finger toward and away from the scroll rather than side to side? My third and fourth fingers down point back toward me unless I really twist my arm in a very contorted manner.

    • @JSB2500
      @JSB2500 Год назад

      The fingers cross the fingerboard at around 45°, and the knuckles move in such a way that the rolling action at the fingertip is across the diagonal of the fingertip, with the result that the rolling direction is along the fingerboard, between scroll and bridge. That shouldn't be contorted at all.
      Just in case you are still looking for the answer 4 years later! 😄

    Ah-ha, the one thing none of the teachers tell us on these Vibrato videos is that you must press down hard on those strings, feeling a command over the strings with strong pressure is Key. In fact, I'm playing about a month now, and I am realizing that if I practice using more pressure on the strings then Vibrato comes naturally. So tell me why do all the teachers forget Step 1: Pressure on the strings for dominance over the strings and Vibrato will be a snap. ciao.

    Interesting. I always have done wrist vibrato. Never understood elbow vibrato. I can't play strings anyway, but I record myself trying.

    • @JSB2500
      @JSB2500 Год назад

      There is no elbow vibrato. Being REALLY precise, there's:
      • Arm vibrato. This is where the biceps of the upper arm modulate the forearm direction, which in turn modulates the wrist position, which in turn modulates the hand position, which modulates the position of the root knuckle of the relevant finger.
      • Wrist vibrato: This is where muscles in your forearm modulate the hand position, keeping the thumb still, which modulates the position of the root knuckle of the relevant finger.
      But there's much more to it, such as whether the ulna and radius in the forearm remain still or move in opposing directions, and such as the fact that one type of vibrato can develop into another, e.g. slower arm vibrato into faster wrist vibrato, in the course of a note. There's also the need to keep constant force between the finger tip and string even though the finger shape is changing dramatically.
      See 03:18 for a really good demonstration of all this.
