    I've had one over a year. I run mine 24/7 and all LEDS are still bright

    How is this looking now? Concerned it's not IP65 rated and noticed in the video the fins near the fan outlet were rusting up? How's it looking now a year on?

    That really helps me with the time issue on my reactor. I’m gonna pick up a new rope grow led for the 29 gallon. Those soft whites don’t work too well but when I have a dedicated refug I’ll use this one

    Thanks for the Video, People told me to get that light but I opted to go with the Kessil H80 time will tell if I spent more money than I need to.

    Regular inspection is key. Some people have had them catch fire. I’d recommend a waterproof outdoor led floodlight from the hardware store.

    I've asked a couple people about this light and they said I shouldn't get it. But from what I've seen on RUclips as far as growing algae and the price, I don't see why I wouldn't take the chance. If all the LEDs burnt out in six months and I wasn't happy with growth in that time period, I wouldn't take it as a complete loss, I'd just get the Kessil H80 or H380. Better to give something a chance before burning a hole in your wallet with the industry standard in my opinion.
    Thank you for all you do Travis! I appreciate your straight to the point, honest, no BS, personal experiences, reviews and methodology.
    Hope all is well and the best of luck!
    Side note: For long term success in personal Aquariums do you think: Skimmer & Algae Filtration or Skimmer & Bio-pellets?
    I am fond of Skimmer & Algae Filtration for the reason it seems most natural and benefits: pH, O2, Pods/Detritivores, with the possibility that Marco Algae "can" release Carbohydrates and Proteins/Amino Acids. Only downside I see is algae can leach out compounds or toxins that "can" stunt coral growth, but with a skimmer and activated carbon it is the last thing I would worry about. Not looking for a long explanation, just a A or B answer because I trust your judgement. ( I know you are a busy man so if you don't get to me I completely understand.)
    [ I only use Chaetomorpha Linum (Regular Chaeto) for the reason it contains less Terpene Compunds than other algae and its cellular structure is more simple/faster growing. Also doesn't directly absorb NH3 the way Micro Algae tends to do. I don't want my Nitrifying Bacteria to compete with Micro Algae, because Micro Algae is VERY EFFICENT when it is at work. I want a strong Nitrifying Bacteria colony and my Chaeto's purpose is to pick up the the left over NO3 and PO4. I don't worry about Denitrifying Bacteria I just let nature do its thing. (Not a expert on algae, just research and testing over the years.) ]
    For anyone else reading I'd like to hear your thoughts.
    Also if the algae toxin or compounds I mentioned concerns anyone I wouldn't worry about it at all, if it ever were a problem(very unlikely), that's why we have activated carbon and water changes for when strange things happen in the aquarium. I look at these things in extreme detail, and just try to lay out all the facts/reasons, and why I use what I use. I hope this gets the gears turning or shed some light on another way of doing things.

      hey for 1 kessil you could buy 10 of these... that means even if it only last 6 months, you can go 5 years before the kessil and buying new lights would pay off. plus in 5 years, led technology is gonna be completely different i bet.

    the LED didn't burn out you can see its still lit. the reason is because its an IR diode that bleeds i to the visible red spectrum humans cannot see IR so thus the LED will look Dim or off did you not notice this in the beginning

    • @DrzBrah
      @DrzBrah 5 лет назад

      I just bought one of these and the light came with a red diode "out". It is still dimly lit and I was concerned it had burnt out. I did think it could be ir. I just checked on Amazon and the pictures show the one dim diode so I think you are correct

      Spot on,l. I bought this light in the UK (a lot more expensive :( ) and the company selling it says that one LED won’t appear to light up. All good :)

    Curious if you’ve since considered trying the new COB type leds for your fuge or ATR? The one I have is 100% silent, water resistant and blooming spectrum.

    nice video... reefing is one big multi layer seesaw balancing act. interesting how much the Reufgium Lte wattage plays a role when balancing with the DT lights + nutrients.

    The reason why your chaeto is lighter in color is because your tanks doesn't have the nutrients to support your chaeto. However, your lights are strong enough to see fast growth, it is the ONLY thing that is keeping your chaeto alive. Chaeto should be lush green, not dark green nor yellow, and should be fluffy too. Dark green and wiry means there isn't much light, which is why your chaeto is dark green under. Yellow means not enough nutrients. The reason why your chaeto is greener than the other is because you have the perfect spectrum from the grow light, while the other has warm white, which is nothing compared to the grow light. Although you can support macroalgae with only light, if you are going to go that route, it's best to have the perfect spectrum and par output. But at least you know your tank is clean if even your macroalgae can't even consume the macronutrients.

    I literally just bought that light but in square form. I bought some chaeto and put it in my sump and partially set it up just like you have. My 75g has been up and running for 3yrs. I had the grow light and chaeto set up in my sump for a month and the chaeto all turned white and died. I had the light on a timer to be on for 6 hours at night. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

    I have a small 10g I'm using as a sump. Looking for a light like this to go above the middle section which is about 10" by 8". Any recommendations? This light would probably be too much right?

    I am envious of the geo sump and equipment. It's a work of art. I am really thinking of getting one of their calcium reactors. I've been dosing 2 part for ever and I'm up to 66 mil of each per day and it's going up. I feel like a calcium reactor would be a logical choice and I wouldn't have to mix 2 part every month

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  6 лет назад +1

      To be honest 66ml a day wouldnt be worth investing into a cal reactor. If you remember my 125 gallon before i took that down it was over 240ml per day. I should of gotten a cal reactor around the 150ml+ but i knew id be taking the system down. Food for thought

    • @rburge200
      @rburge200 6 лет назад

      FishOfHex 240ml! That's a crazy amount of 2 part. I have a feeling my tank will be there before too long and am looking toward the future.

    Would it be worth putting a chaetomorpha refugium on my 6ft 2ft 2ft fish only setup to reduce nitrate and need for so big water changes or would nitrate reactor be better

    Do you think that this light could prevent other algae from growing in my sump? I seem to grow some red fluffy algae In my sump that eventually starts growing on top of my chaeto. My chaeto still grows but I dislike seeing that fluffy red algae and not sure how to get rid of it....or what I can put in the sump to eat it up.

    • @FishOfHex
      @FishOfHex  6 лет назад

      This light will grow any macro algae that happens to be in the refugium, now the Red algae looks to be out growing your chaeto so i would manually remove it.

    Do you always go refugium first now before skimmer? My next project is a 40 gallon Breeder sump and haven’t drawn my design yet

    • @FishOfHex

      Depends on the build. on any custom sump i always put the refugium first to get the biggest one i can.

    Running the very similar 138W unit and it is definitely growing a ton of Chaeto…

    Definitely recommended. I swapped out the fan, but might need a quieter one since it is still a bit loud.
