Belive me or not, but in large parts of Europe, especialy in Germany, this sketch is a huge tradition to be watched on new year's eve.
It's the Ladys 90th birthday ...
She is a little senile and surpassed all her male friends ... they all died years before.
So James, her Butler, impersonates them for the toasts ... and gets totally drunk ...
And at the end ... well, he will do his very best 😉😂
Its british and also german and other european countries humor. Sarcastic, black.... maybe tooo difficult for many americans! This is EVERY YEAR in TV in many europeans countries on new years eve before midnight since 50, 60 years and in many families its tradition to watch this!

It even goes beyond that.
There are also a lot of public viewing events and live performances/reenactments of this skit at several theaters and or Restaurants on New years eve, also serving the original menu: Mulligatawny-Soup, poshed North Sea Haddock, grilled Chicken and fruits for dessert 😂

Dinner For One is simply cult in Germany. This little film has been around since I was little. "The Same procedure is every year James" Is the best Sentence in this Sketch.
But now there are also funny parodies, like Dinner for Döner (Kebab) by Erkan and Steffan and a sketch in Kölsch (Cologne dialect) with Annete Frier and Ralf Schmitz.
This show was banned in Sweden for 6 years due to its high consumption of alcohol. ;)
It is a tradition to watch it on New Year's Eve and I've been watching it every year since my childhood.
This year (or better: last year) the TV show turned 60 years.
even as a child I loved it. most shown sketch in german history because a lot of tv stations are showing it @ diferrent times 31.12. I grew up with it^^ and it is sctech-style so kids without english can follow it. a new year wirthout it is not a new year^^ in germany there is a little itodructen that this is HER 90th birthday all friend are dead so the buttler have to fill in. and this is sarcasm to watch it every year with the implement " thame es every year^^" and what you are eating is in germany NO WAY NO WAY NO NO NO bread. this is garbage^^
