Sweet as the intro ... 1st computer the 48k rubber ... my cousin had the toast rack so jelly him playing renegade with music ... glad these are in you collection great work Maddi ...
I thought the video was too short, without realizing 19 mins went by so quick! got engrossed in the video!! cant wait for more of this topic!! Absolutely awesome loader screen ;) the colours... must have taken ages to get that just right!!
Excelent choice of music when pulling out the cotton swab. Castilvania Bloody Tears. Show that dust who's boss so count Sinclar can rise again. Love your videos. I too love restoring hardware. And also get distracted by a lot of projects.
The dust has indeed been eliminated and count Sinclair has risen with it's dark cape ;o) Thanks Bastien! It's indeed difficult not to get distracted by projects with all that retro and vintage have to offer.
The spectrum was my first computer before I got the Amiga. Its such a special computer to me because it started me off on my life with computers (taught me to read and write too as a kid). I dont understand the arguments and politics to this day over retro computers tho. Its like huh? They all had a place in peoples heart. And to be honest, the computers we associated with as kids were the random ones a sales guy at an electronics store convinced our parents to buy lol. Now I love and wanna collect them all (Even Ataris! :P ) As always, awesome video, loved the spectrum art loader too!!
omg! i had a spectrum 128k when i was 13 just seeing them again brings it all back.. i'd love to have one again.. I can't wait to see what you do with these maddy.. you're so lucky to have two of them.. i'm very jealous. *excited*
Those diagrams from 15:55 made my day. Replacing the RAM on those is a pain, the pads and traces are SO fragile, I lost 4 pads and two traces. Had to get MutantCaterpillarGames to bail me out.
Another great episode 👍🏻 can you show in part 2 how you connect the new voltage regulator to the external heat sink please. Looking forward to episode 2.....waits...😬
Actually there wasnt a real need to connect it to the heatsink, however it does get warm so i bought some tiny heatsinks with thermal adhesives and just stick a piece on top of it. :o)
By replacing that regulator, you're messing with the overall Speccy atmosphere - the rack will be cold now! :) Wonderful illustrations (lol), and great intro. You put a lot of work into this! :) Nicely produced!
Thank you Brian! :o) Hmmm I didnt think about that, mine's gonna have a cold toastrack.. it might be good in the summer months,.. to .. ermm... cool the toast? lol
Great video Maddi. I sold my entire Star Wars toy collection around '88 or '89 to fund the purchase of a second hand one of these. Love the old toastie! I still have it and I've modded it with a stereo AY output and "unrainer" GAL. I still prefer running games on it to running them on emulators or even on my Spectrum Next because I can warm my hands on a cold winter's day :)
I absolutely love retro computer restorations so thank you very much for this! :) It's seems strange that Sir Clive didn't approve of gaming on his machines yet they put in a decent sound chip... By the way, you missed the opportunity to paint your nails red/yellow/green/blue/black. ;)
Lol! I don't have yellow nailpolish unfortunately or i would have :o)) I'm glad you enjoyed this Thomas, yes that is a point to think about, i'm also curious about the implementation of the sound chip! I wonder if he accepted it.
Nice our first home computer was the 48k then on one of my several swaps through my computer list I managed to get one of those 128k's from a local person.
I've wanted one for a long time. I'll get one eventually. I have an NTSC 48k Spectrum that was a USA Prototype. It looks just like the U.K. first release unit.
I'm a big commodore fan, but there's a certain sexyness about Sinclair computers. The lack of a power switch is still very odd to me, especially in a business environment. Jeff Minter has gone on record saying that the spectrum will fight you all the way when writing games on it. Which, to me says that the sinclair programmers needed extra skill and perseverance.
17:28 More likely not the speed or rate, but the duty cycle. Each cycle alternates between zero voltage and full voltage (the two most efficient settings), and the relative proportions will average to your desired output voltage. A.k.a. PWM.
You know your way around electronics - I love the 7805 explanation. I wonder if you'd be interested in a further project for your Toasty? A while back, I recreated the Multiface 128. All details are on my website here: projectspeccy.com/projects/ Looking forward to your next video!
Did Sinclair really hate the fact that you could play games on it? That surprises me, since that's why most people bought it. I reckon the machine doesn't have a joystick port mainly for tax reasons. A console or gaming machine is taxed at a higher rate than a Personal Computer.
Joovc Doovde player...Actually yes he was solely aiming for the educational and business market. He didn't care for it much as a games machine even though it did him favours. The beautiful thing happened is that kids started programming games on the spectrum and the games library grew large. I mean it doesnt even have hardware sprites. The chose 48k RAM for Tax reasons though instead of 64k. One thing for sure about the spectrum is that it's not ready for the HuuD Unable to resist the reference your username is making ;o))
Yeah my 48k has that same issue, i'm having to replace the entire memory bank and looking for alternatives. i'm not keen on the ram chips, they're very unreliable.
Actually with current, it only depends on how much is drawn from what is taking from the regulators, if something is drawing 500ma then thats all the regulator will draw from the 2A supply.... the 9v supply can be 8A but thats only the value which it can provide if needed.... it tends to be the voltage difference that is dissipated as heat as far as i'm aware.
People screaming about one manufacturer being better than the other, or one platform being vastly superior to another, or their dicks were bigger than the rest, all while blindly following crowds and not offering any actual facts or data as to why said platforms were superior to others.
Far too much time wasted with IPA and ear buds. Just throw it in the wish washer or give it a good scrub in the bathtub/shower. Dry it off in the Microwave oven.
@@digitalradiohacker Thats exactly what a 'wire brush' is lol Speccy mobo? naaah thats easy to replace, Toastracks selling like hotcakes on ebay....cheap too ;o)

Agree with the other comments, the new intro is terrific! The rest of the video is good, too. :)
Lem that intro was soooooo good :D Got to love abit of speccy i never owned that model of the system i only had the ZX +2 :)
I love that loader intro :D

Fads invariably are linked with young people. Nostalgia can't be a fad, unless you extend the definition of it to eternity :)
Thats not necesarily true, I know many older than me who arent truly into retro but make out that they are. i've suffered at the hands of them.
The best Spectrum. I was lucky to get mine for free.
In the UK we have switches on our power outlets. So we have a power switch for everything!
You should not be so afraid of that uncovered EPROM window :) It took weeks on direct sunlight to erase it ;)

I've seen people try switching regulators in these computers but it produces way too much noise in the audio and video.
Awesone ❣
Loading screen was great, does that mean you are going to be doing a short course/demonstration on Z80 machine language programming?

4:04 I just figured it out: RGB nail polish!
I was lucky I got my first one from eBay with a 48k for just £20 needs memory fix now though. The second one was given to me by my sister
As you have two, can I have two slices of toast please?

i pinged you on facebook... i have something you might want to review
16:52 So for 2A, the input power is 9×2 = 18W, while the two regulators are supplying 2×5×1 = 10W. So the remaining 8W has to be chucked away as heat.
Is there a 'political' side to the 8 bit computers? What is it?

5:40 That’s “DE-9”.
Yes it is, but i was referring to the Joysticks themselves which have a DB9 plug
