    Since its introduction in 2002, the big DL has been one of the biggest open secrets in large capacity ADV/touring biking. That trusty engine was designed with sport in mind in the mid '90s (it first appeared in the TL1000S in '97) and the same basic mill is still doing excellent service in the latest big V Strom.
    Remember folks, you don't absolutely HAVE to buy the latest shiny machinery to enjoy two wheels. There are fantastic older bikes out there for small money. Do your own wrenching and you can create a tremendously individualised machine of your choice for just a few grand.

    • @TWPeeps
      @TWPeeps 4 года назад +3

      Eliseu Corrona castrol full synthetic 10-40 every 4500 miles, air filter cleaned every 10k, and new plugs every 15k. Also check valves every 25k. Had to adjust 3 of them.

    • @EliseuCorrona
      @EliseuCorrona 4 года назад

      @@TWPeeps thanks for your return friend. For now, I'm using 20w50 mineral oil on my motorcycle. Recommendation of the Brazil manual. It is 53,000 km long. However, a synthetic oil will bring better results. That's why I asked you about the product you use. My intention is to perform a lubricant upgrade and ensure longevity to the engine.

    This is a fantastic video!!! No blasting or catchy music, to be heard instead a competent narrator that tells the story of his longtime machine. The smooth toned sound of the engine with a little growl is great as well. The scenery and weather is great and ideal for a 'get out and go' ride. This 73 year old guy handles the bike, road, and hazards perfectly, and I swear if I didn't already have a vstrom, I would be shopping for one above all other bikes. I bought a 2012 650 for $5,200 at a dealer, and sometimes I wish I'd have gotten the 1000 for the extra power. However, the 650 is quite adequate for my 6' 225 lbs, and I like the economy of 51-59 MPG for commuting. I've been concerned by a few other long-term reviews of the stator going bad, and it's good to know his lasted until 86,000 miles under some extensive abuse. I tend to keep the RPMs low so I may never have that problem. I actually like the style of the older vstroms (2010 and earlier), but I kinda like the newer ones (2017 and up) IMO. Overall I get the feeling I will have this bike a long time, and I won't regret it either.

    • @delldavis9803

      V Orlando One of my riding buddies has a 650 and he has no problem keeping up with me and he gets a lot more mileage out of his tires then I do the 650 is a real good choice

      Hello, I had a Wee for a couple of years, and now I ride the V-1000. I wish I could ride both alternatively! I couldn't get enough of the 650, which I personally think handles curves better than the 1000. It gets better MPG too and has plenty of power to spare. Great lighting too. I was itching for the extra displacement which is fabulous on the freeway, but there is always a trade-off. Happy rides! 🙂

    I love my vstrom. Bought a leftover ‘07 for $7500 otd. I did a few mods, raised the handlebars up and back a bit, new seat, added a few teeth to the rear sprocket, and added 2 usb charging ports. Have taken long distance, camping, adventure riding, it’s never failed me. I’ll keep ‘til the engine dies! And yeah, I like the old school feel.

    Have a 1st gen and have done all the recommended mods to it. Changing gear ratio and getting it professionally tuned with a power commander, made a world of difference. Other than being so heavy, by comparison to other bikes I've owned, it's been the best bike all-rounder I've owned. Two up with the wife and full kit, I know I could take it anywhere. Keep thinking about something smaller for solo adv and better off-road, but doubt I'll ever sell the beast, 20 years old and still going strong!

So I did it and sure enough that was the problem.

    I watched your review two years ago when I was considering my options. I got a newer model, the 1050 XT, last year as my first bike and so far put 12,500 miles on it. Absolutely love it. No fuss on highway and plenty enough fun in twisties, a bit too heavy for someone clueless like me to play in the sand or dirt, though. Mine already has some fancy electronics that help keep a greenhorn like me out of serious trouble and cruise control, too. Oh, and the added bonus is the fact that I easily get 50+ MPG (under 4,7 l/100 km) when I am riding sensibly. The engine is just amazing. Ride safely, sir! Greetings from Poland!

    Mine is an '02... bought used in '16 for 3200CDN with the TRAX luggage... 112000km... only failures are the chain grenaded a week before I was scheduled to replace it, which took out the clutch slave cylinder, so replaced the engine... and the known issue of the ignition switch resistor connections to fail (fixed today)... all I can say is #SWISSARMYFORK... that is the best description of this bike.. when I did the engine swap, I did the +2 on the rear sprocket as well, and went to a 530 chain instead of the 525 stock... one bike to rule them all...

    Thank you he was a good friend and riding buddy going to miss him. I am riding the 18 now The 05 is semi retired and getting used to all the fancy gadgets on the 18 . Like you I have been riding 40+ years and not having the ABS actually saved my bacon a few times had to lock the rear wheel and lay my bike down so I wouldn’t hit a truck. But in the rain and slippery conditions I’ll definitely take the ABS.

    • @davidkoeppen3121
      @davidkoeppen3121 3 года назад +1

      I have the 18 also and really like it. It has a good combo of not too many gadgets compared to other bikes but the lean sensitive abs and traction control aren't over powering by all the reviews I have seen. Very intuitive. It's good practice to go out and really see how well a bike will stop in the rain knowing the abs will keep the front tire from locking up. Now jamming the front brake around wet corners I don't think I've got the guts to see how well it works! Maybe others will post videos and be the guinea pigs!

    ty sir, for the good information. About 9000 miles of 15 k on a 12 dl1000 so far, and your video makes me want to keep it even though I do NOT want to tackle the valve adjustment now due. Air filter change means one might as well check those rear valves though. Have you ever noticed a hiccup/burp at 2500 to 2800 rpm using lower gears at a steady cruising speed on back roads? I can make the bike do it at will! I have ridden for 45 years and this is the first time I have had a bike do such. Your purchase of a new strom is a real testament to your approval of these machines. Ride safe.

    • @delldavis9803
      @delldavis9803  Год назад +1

      I would not worry about the valves I checked mine three times and every time they were within specs never were out finally I quit inspecting them. And that hesitation is common on all first GEN v strom I tried a fuel injection tuner that helped a little but didn’t Cure the problem after a while I just learned not to ride in that zone of RPMs. I really only had the hesitation problem when I was in traffic but I ride mostly on the open roads and I like to rev my machine so it was never really a problem. I hope this helps good luck and ride safe

    I have a 04 Strom 1000, with 52k miles, and I plan to keep it. It does what it says on the tin, and stock seat is the best I've had. I might buy a 650 some day, but I like the roominess and being able to take my missus, or one of my daughters as pillion. I'd like a Tenere 700, but that seat looks awful, and I could buy three second hand bikes for the money.

    I have a 2003 Bumblebee FZ-1 with a little over 130,000 miles and have had the same sort of experience. Only one real non-maintenance issue--a bur on one of the front calipers--along with expected maintenance. Fork seals at about 60,000, new fork and rear springs (Hyperpro) at about 50K, mainly because my rider friends said I had to do them, though I had no handling issues. After I had it for about 13 years, I thought I deserved a new bike and bought a 2017 FJ-09 because of the triple engine and great reviews (and the ridiculously low price). A completely different riding experience, and I ride the FZ almost as much as the FJ. When I did the top end checks done on the FZ, the valves were always within spec. With its mileage, it wouldn't sell for much so there was no reason to sell it. People still say it is a really pretty motorcycle. The FJ has all of the modern and sort of goofy styling and all the electronic features. (The electronic in the manual take up most of the book.) The FZ has taken me on many three-four day road trips here in California and it has never let me down. I'll turn 75 in a few months, and both of these bikes are my "happy place".

    • @delldavis9803

      I feel you can’t go wrong with a Japanese motorcycle I’ve had nothing but good luck with them. I’ve had two European bikes and both of them had problems.
