you may have had much more phosphorus in the soil last year than this year, If your soil has to much nitrogen the sweet tater will mostly make leaves and smaller long bulbs. Bonemeal before planting will fix this problem. Have a great week brother!
My harvest in the short raised beds like yours always had problems with root crops because the natural earth under the store bought soil and compost would not let the potatoes, carrots or beets penetrate deep enough. I went 18” high and have had better luck. At least you got something though. Take care and have a blessed day and week ahead Craig.

We had a better crop of potato’s this year then last year but we had a lot of small ones like you. Did have a few nice bigs too but not many. We got probably 15 to 20 pounds this year. Every year is a learning year for me so maybe next year it’ll be even better. I tried two grow bags and both of those did pretty well by themselves. Nice harvest though. 👍👍

Each time you bury the stems use a layer of soil and a layer of compost of equal thickness. I learned this from a guy that grew a lot of potato’s and worked in the industry.
Hey there, Craig! As you were pulling those potatoes out of the ground I kept hoping for BIG potatoes! Looks like a couple of skillets of homefries and maybe 4 qts of canned sweet potatoes, plus those for fresh eating. Something is better than nothing, and as you said, still plenty of time to add potatoes from the market as needed. Next year will be better. I can feel it! :)

I've been doing more dehydrating than canning this year to save jars and space. My son doesn't really eat anything from the garden, so I'm prepping mostly my breakfasts and lunches. I make dinner for him and "raid the fridge" for my dinner. I can make 20 different meals or more from the pantry, but he is his with food fatigue. Sigh. I mostly do it for me and my daughter. I just bought a vacuumed sealer so I’m sealing up some beans, rice and flour and meal this year 😃👏👏

I've always had bad luck with Pete... potatoes use lots of nitrogen and if ya use the same dirt twice it won't do very well unless ya get a lot of lightning...it gives nitrogen. Ya can also use fish for nitrogen. Anything ta grow yerself is a success.
