  • Hey Everybody, We went out a few days for a couple of hours each time. We were able to find a few relics left behind by the soldiers. Many of the battlefields here are being developed so there wont be any signs a war was ever fought here. Sad really. Thanks for taking a look.

I was raised in Decatur in the 50s and 60s. Did some hunting in the early 60s in north Ga but never thought to look in Atlanta, thought it was all paved over. Glad you saved something.

in the mid 50's and through the 60;s, my family lived on Ridgewood Rd. in NW Atlanta. I could walk out our back door and in just a short walk would be at the Chattahoochee River. There several indentations on the hillsides behind our house. Digging around in one, I found a cannon ball one day. It's about the size of a softball and it had an indentation on it. Not knowing what it was and out of curiosity, I took my pocket knife and started scratching out that spot.. I poured out a powder that was black. I still have that cannonball right here beside me as I write this. I've been told that I was very lucky not just as a find but that I didn't create a spark digging the plug out.

Hey Doug! Man I love hearing personal stories like yours. It’s amazing how many rounds were shot into Atlanta during the siege. And with the three major battles in your area there is probably many more out there. Did the cannonball have a brass fuse in it or just a plug? It very well could have been Confederate. Either way it is a heck of a find for ya. I’m glad you have a great piece of history and you hung on to it. Take care brother 🙂🔥🔥👍

Smyrna allowed Concord Road earthworks to be destroyed to build shopping centers. They were the second line of heavy defenses from Kennesaw Mountain to guard Atlanta. I remember walking through the earthworks and cannon emplacements back in the 70s . They were almost pristine. Such a loss of history .

I grew up on the corner of Forrest Rd and Linwood Ave back in the '50s. This was hilley land and breast works during the war. After a good rain, the ground was sprouting bullets. Once I found a dozen of those cleaning bullets with the zinc plug.We speculated that the plug was to expand the bullet into rifeling for a better gas seal. I took one to the Kennesaw battlefield where a ranger told me what I had. Across the street a judge owned about 3 AC of land and all sorts of things were found there: spurs, belt buckles, sword scabbards, etc. That was my childhood.

I lived on Powers Ferry Rd north of Buckhead as a kid back in the late 40's to mid 50's. We had seven acres and on the back side of the property there were trenches dug for probably five hundred feet facing north to the Chattahoochee River.
