- Want the ultimate version of the Golf GTI? You'll want the Golf GTI Performance Pack. It costs £980 extra, but for that you get more power, better brakes and a limited slip differential. But does it also give you bragging rights over every other GTI owner? Rory Reid hops in to find out.

Getting mine tomorrow, black, 5dr, manual, Performance Pack.... of course! It's a no brainer, for the diff alone. Can't wait to get my mitts on this beastie. My first GTI :)
It’s Rory! What a great bloke, more charisma than the whole new top gear crew.
It saddens me that most people only care about horse powers. All experienced car owners know and appreciate the chassis, balance, interior design and the overall feel of the car. Sure, a Subaru STi is fast but when you drive it daily you'll start to notice the imperfection in the gears ratio, the uncomfortable suspension that makes your interior rattle like crazy.
Sold my WRX which I tuned it to 360hp to get into a mkvii gti autobahn w/ perf and lighting package. The dsg can be tuned and of course the engine too. It's a perfect hatch in my opinion. The gear ratio on the WRX was a joke. The 6 spd was a joke. I loved the handling though.....but after almost 2 years that alone didn't keep me a subie guy.
Seriously one of the best cars available. It's gorgeous, practical for everyday use, as fun as a car needs to be, the refinement of the interior is Audi quality. All around a really great car.
The music and camera angles reminds me of Gran Turismo
Thanks, 51jjm. It's true, we do drive on the wrong side :) Parts of this video were shot at a place called Danesfield House in Marlow, UK. Enjoy your PP when it arrives.
2013 Performance Pack has Silver GTI badge on the front grille like this one, but anything 2014 onwards had red GTI badges on the front.
I bought a GTI and pick it up this Tuesday. Christ this video has got me excited!
Hi, I have the normal GTI, I doubt performance will have different consumption when it come to driving in a very "mature style" as it's a mere tune that gives the performance GTi that extra 10HP ( no hardware differences other than diff & brakes)
the car will do 6.6L/100km on highways, not sure you can get that inside a city... p.s highway speed range in my country is 100-120km/h, consumption might differ depending on your speed
thanks hope this was informative and clear
Awesome review. I love the shirt! Well done! I didn't even mind the music. I would rather hear the exhaust on the 2.0T though! Give me more!
nice review. you are doing great job!
Good to be back! Not that I ever really left :)
Nice to see you back!
can't wait to get it in the US with no electric e brake.
love the review and what was the music in the back round sort of sounded like LTJ Bukem
This guy is really good. I bet he could sell anything, and I would buy it.
THIS Guy is now on Top Gear !?!?
Sure hope when it comes to the US, you will be able to get the Performance Pack with a proper manual.
You will! In Canada it's coming out in the 2016 GTI model in 2015. So I def think it will be coming out in the USA :D
My performance model has a limited slip diff, RED badges (Not Silver) and GTI on the callipers. 2015 Model
VW GTI is Worlds Best Hot hatch. Good on gas too. I like its cornering and DSG too. Hands down best car
HI-COMPRESSION what about the golf r
How does it compare to the 2014 GTI Wolfsburg edition?
You are wrong when explaining the differential lock. The normal GTI doesn't go 50/50 on power distribution. It has a normal differential like every other modern car, which means it can give 100/0. But this is bad, under certain circumstances, like when one wheel is in dirt. The special thing about the differential lock in the GTI Performance is that it limits the distribution range, e.g. until a maximum of 70/30.
Clueless. Stick to mouth breathing.
Love the car I have a 6th gen. Golf GTI hopefully we won't get the electronic e brake I don't want to have hook up VAG COM every time I want to do a brake job plus why would I get this over a Golf R?
I've got a 2017 VW Gti PP manual, but if I'm honest I thought the handling would be better, or at least more feel in the handling, yes it's fast 245Bhp, but how fast can you really go, I want lots of feel from a car, and I feel the steering is too light, even in Sport Mode, brakes could have more grab and feel, however it is a great place to be, and a great all rounder.
I really want to get a GTi. There is no performance pack available in my country. Will this be retrofittable? GTi with PP weights 32kg over a normal GTi. Will tuning the ECU/DME and adding an aftermarket LSD/haldex do the job? I really want this!
Well presented and reviewed thankyou
I plan on get a WRX soon, and I don't know why Subaru can't build really cool cloth seats like these. I think I would all most get the cloth seats over the leather seats if I had the money in the GTI, the plaid is that awesome.
Jack Attack Neither actually. I have connections with a couple of people who work at a Subaru dealership, but its a bit of a drive, so I am waiting to actually get some more money before I start any of that stuff.
Jack Attack I have heard that the GTI is a real treat to drive. And I all so heard the WRX is kind of underwhelming. Its probably because its gotten so nice over the years, and lost some of its rawness. I drove my brothers 03 WRX, and that car is just a blast to drive. I am all so considering a Fiesta ST. I have 2 months though to think about it.
MrThePrivateer Go for the GTI. I'm getting rid of my 13 Wrx next summer for one of these. So much nicer and a better DD.
In Canada we have the regular handbrake.
tune the engine for power (GTis are famously detuned from the factory for fuel economy), and you can easily get another 20% more horsepower, so it goes from a decent 227 to an almost terrifying 270. and that's JUST a tune, absolutely no other mods
0:15 Oh really ? Didn't you forget about the Golf R ?
It's not a GTI.
He asked: "What's the best Hot-Hatch?"... So, in my opinion the R is better than the GTI in some aspects, in others it's not. But, he should've at least mentioned it.
Dino Prašo alot of reviews say they rather have the gti over the golf r. The gti feels better through the hills. The golf r just feels to easy to drive. The real only great thing the golf r has is the acceleration from a stop.
+Dino Prašo I got a GTI Performance pack with stage 2 and i would never want a Golf R. Reason: in UK insurance and road tax are super high....
the golf r looks boring and isnt as sporty or fun to drive as the gti, an easy tune and it would leave the r in the dust.
44.1mpg for the DSG and 47.1 for the manual. That's 6.2L/100km (manual), 6.6L/100km (DSG)
Great review! Best regards from the Harz Mountains Germany
Mine definitely has a manual handbrake. Guess UK version got screwed?
the new seat leon cupra it,s better , or what about mercedes a45 amg
Watching this in 2020. I have a 2017 mk7 gti pp and mine has the manual parking brake , not a button . Looks like you missed out my friend.
Bullshit.
@@toecutter3530 pulling my e brake as I read your comment 🤙
People are dumb. If GTI were to have 300bhp, sales would drop by 90%. No one buys GTI for performance only.
All you need is a stage one tune and you're there.
Bullet Tooth Tony
Great for those who wants more. But for me, 220bhp for every day drive in the city....it's more then enough.
Maybe the only thing I miss on GTI is a bit more agressive look...mark 5 and 6 were better looking.
moveaxebx What I meant was that for the people that want more performance you can easily get it.
moveaxebx
what city u in
MrThePrivateer Why? It's by far the most elegant looking hatch on the market. It doesn't scream about its looks and yet you can drive off to the luxury hotel with it and not look like a teenage boy covered with pimples all over the face.
When will it arrive in the states ?
Probably mid-2014.
I just got 2018 gti performance and it’s got 245bhp with 19s a standard
patrol is very cheap where I live so i don't really pay any attention to consumption. I only tested the consumption once on the highway and that was when I got 6.5L/100km for a while .....other than that time I'm more of a WOT-driver doing speeds much more than 120 ;)
Will the stateside version get the same MPG rating?
UK ratings are generally much higher than US. Same car, different tests. I did read that we can expect an 18% improvement - if that's the case, we're talking about an EPA rating of 24/36 up from the current 21/31. If you're really interested in MPG, they're bringing the GTD with its performance TDI engine over as well.
Tom Eisenmenger UK ratings are 'higher' because their gallons are larger than US gallons. So they get more mileage per each of their larger gallons. I think an imperial gallon is something like 20% larger than a US gallon.
I don't think they change anything in regards to the powertrain b/w UK and US, so these should get the extra bump in mileage. Keep in mind that they claim 18% increase from current model, which is 24city/33hwy for DSG. 18% increase of that is 28city/39hwy, which will probably average 32-33mpg. Not too shabby.
thanks very mutch big hug from Portugal and thx for helping me i´m a normal driver i like drive slow with style in Portugal in highway is to 120km/h but you in city what is your best comsumption? :-)
its not only the bhp its the torque... mk7 has more than the mk6
6.5 seconds? Seems a bit slow. The 9th gen si does like 5.9-6.1 with no turbo.
Does the manual version come with an electric e-brake as well? It's also a little ridiculous that you have to pay extra to get the limited slip. Otherwise, it is one fresh whip.
hello you have the gti performance? serious you cant do 6,6L? i think buy the new golf gtd or gti but i never found someone who tell me the comsumption of the car in a drive normal you cant get 6.6L in higway or in country road like city? best regrads :-) and good luck to your new car
Nobody mentioned the upgraded limited slip which is a huge upgrade if you plan on modifying the car..... Manufacture upgrades are always pretty awesome. 2017 golf mk7 owner. S model
I'm about to get mine in april . ordered it back in january. gti pp
How heavy is your right foot? :)
Très bon test j'ai bien aimé! Nice Review , Great GTI Performance
So is this going to come to u.s. with a manual transmission? It better!
Surely a hot hatch needs to be able to do pretty much everything doesn't it and in my opinion the golf gti does this
Very interesting review!
Manual or dsg?
Which is better for the car?
It's all preference. DSG feels a little clunky at low speeds, mine does anyway, but other than that it's great. I imagine the dual clutch system in the Evo or Porsche PDK's are probably better though.
+JayTac1 thanks...a few days ago I tried the DSG and finally if I get the car it will be manual. Dsg in accelerarion was great but not good at low speed.
Roberto Ramon i had manual on my GT R-Line 2012. But finally goin DSG on my newly ordered GTI Clubsport. Test drove it before buy & already loving it. So smooth & quick shifts. Obviously DSG is better for the engine, because engine itself selects when transmission should happen. But i loved my manual too! VWs manual must be World Class! :)
1) No, it's not. Unless you're Vettel you can't tell the difference of 0.1 seconds from 0-62mph. And the in-gear acceleration is exactly the same.
2) Dude, what?? What I meant was that a DSG gearbox is slow as hell when it comes to fast handbrake turns and reaccelerations so it doesn't make any sense to bitch about the lack of a manual handbrake when your car is already a DSG one.
With the performance it does 155 mph that's the same as any standard M car
Bad lighting adjustment, but good review.
Excellent in-depth review, but to the point....well done :)
I have always liked Golfs & I LOVE these latest past couple of years models, but I'd still take the Astra AS OPC (Opel equivalent of your VXR). The Focus ST reminds me most of my younger 'Hoon days', but, it's just that....the more immature of the 3 cars. And for me, personally, the Megane RS doesn't even rate. Nowhere near enough extras & a very basic interior for an expensive price-tag :(
To address all those rebutting the claim this video makes that the GTI is the best hot hatch via "umm hello what about the Golf R" -- to my mind, I don't think the Golf R fits into the genre of "hot hatch", nor does an Audi S3. Those are far more expensive, far more performance oriented, four wheel drive hatches; they're in a league far above the GTI, particularly considering price point. What the GTI should be *realistically* compared to is a Mini Cooper S, Fiat Abarth, Mazda 3 Speed, etc. Front wheel drive, affordable, practical, zesty hatchbacks. Of those, I agree with this video, the GTI takes the cake. Nothing hits all the stops (price, performance, refinement) as does the GTI. No one chooses a GTI because they liked it more than the R, just like no one chooses a Cayman over Carrera for the perfromance. They're totally different price point leagues and they shouldn't be thought of as comparable.
With that, this guy and his production team are fit for the BBC, or Netflix. Dude is on point. Also, of the strange wheel switch-up -- can someone name the first set of wheels shown? I want to sell my generic GTI wheels for those, day nice.
It's simply that the R was not yet launched when this video was made
Emerson Ward But Someone. Me for example picked the GTI Clubsport before the R. You think only engine? Rvis little faster but cars not only bout engines brakes or whatever, they also bout price & definetly Looks. Clubsport is more special than R, sorry just saying... My newly ordered one for example will come individually numbered as well as its a special edition (Edition 40). Listen to Carz.co.za review, they even say GTI CS is better! ;)
very good. really really good, actually. thnx. now, just drive on the right side of the road. then, you'll get that handbrake you want...you'll be all set! ;) ps where was this shot? love the 'house' you keep driving thru/by. thnx again for a very good video/presentation/production. john in los angeles waiting for his red 5-door manual mk7 pp...
The best hot hatch in the world isnt GTI Performance anymore - its GTI Clubsport (with 290 hpvon overboost) - Which i just ordered 2 weeks ago!! (yes i can because i live in Europe/Sweden.. ;)
You could just get an ecu reflash and gain more power and it would be a lot cheaper than spending the extra money for the "performance pack"
Good luck with the handling… that’s the whole point of the GTi PP
If I buy the mk7 gti it will have the performance pack, manual box, 3 door in red please, I don't know why buy I live this car in red, the standard wheels are 18s he's got the optional 19 they look great. It's also got a camera in the front bumper reading the road to stop you having a crash at low speeds & because of this it's 5 insurances groups lower than a mk6 gti & does 47 mpg how can anyone not like this car
Instead of 6.6, it does it in 6.5! What? Nice T-shirt dude.
Very good video/review thanks!
Great review thanks!
DSG gives BETTER consumption than the manual :)
I have MK7 GTI and it easily get below 6.6L/100km
Best Regards
owner of both gearboxs
Well presented and interesting
Yes it's called the Golf R
I'm going to get that car when it hits in the USA
M135i, Mini JCW and - considering pure fun - Ford Focus ST
This review is a victory of style over substance. Good production values, but the content is utter tripe.
The GTI is a brilliant hot hatch (I own a MKV and am about to upgrade to a MK7 GTI PP), but it's a stretch to call it the best hot hatch in the world. It's a great all-rounder, but what about the R, A45, RS3 or the M135i?
The extra 10 hp / 7 kW doesn't make a lick of difference to performance. The GTI PP is heavier than the standard GTI, so it basically cancels it out. Yet this guy reckons it's like t's been "mainlining Red Bull". 0.1 of a second. Please.
The trick LSD is "boring" and the e-parking brake "almost single-handedly ruins this car". I know Jeremy Clarkson became quite wealthy from making moronic hyperbolic statements about cars, but you haven't quite nailed the recipe here. It is possible to be entertaining and informative at the same time.
+Reece Lyndon Thanks for your commentary. I recently bought the GTI SE over a GTI S w/PP because I honestly couldn't tell the difference on a series of test drives. I am wondering, though, why you still bought the GTI w/PP?
+eslgurucalif - I ended not buying the GTI PP as we needed more space, so got a Golf R Wolfsburg wagon, which is a limited edition model here in Australia. It's brilliant.
If I didn't need the space, I'd have probably gone for the GTI PP, as I think it's agility and responsiveness makes it a more rewarding drive than the R (though not as quick), and the trick diff makes enough of a difference at the limit to make it worthwhile.
All three (GTI, GTI PP & R) are brilliant cars though. If any one of them meets your practical needs, you'll be happy.
Enjoy.
This comment didn’t age well. He ended up on top gear. You are still nothing.
Honestly, I'd just buy it without the performance pack to save the pretty penny. If I really wanted performance, I could spend much less than the package on a stage 1 tune, that would be much more ho and torque as well.
But won't have the LSD to put the power down and getting an LSD aftermarket + installation would cost much more - also you get bigger brakes to stop that power for the corners and for safety
Well done video.
Why so negative?
1. It is different in acceleration. That's why it has a faster 0-62mph time. It accelerates better in-gear, too.
2. There's no engineering reason they can't make a handbrake that locks the rear wheels - even with a DSG. If we ask for it, maybe they'll build it. NASA put a man on the moon, doggy.
3. You're not exactly Rory Reid, but thanks for the feedback :)
Apart from the electronic handbrake it’s an automatic and to be fair the GTI should be like this from standard.
I want those LED tailights, please VW make them an option!
Things wrong with this review(er):
1) Claiming the power bump of the PP is noticeable. It's not. The PP is no different at all in acceleration; what you get is a faster deceleration into corners, courtesy of the better brakes, and a better traction out them, especially tight ones, courtesy of the LSD.
2) Bitching about the lack of a manual handbrake because "you can't make the classic move of a handbrake turn" when you're driving a DSG model.
So, not exactly Chris Harris then...
Can I get a golf 7 GTI for my birthday
The Leon Cupra 265 remains by far a better choice over this "performance pack" GTI.
Seems like there were two different cars in this review - both had different wheels.
+Brijesh Patel (BP) Illuminati confirmed.
+RecombuCars I lold. Do you have any intentions on updating this vid with the 2016 or perhaps the 2017 GTIs? Wondering if the Autobahn edition is really worth it over the Performance Pack. Nice vid, btw. Well produced.
I love my gti 😉😊
Haha the first car has different rims to the one he's driving :o
this with rwd and defeatable stability control and oh my god
i love vw but reality is, for the price, the subaru wrx is a lot better, more hp plus awd for less
ha ha, I'm here checking this out, but thinking the same thing. I've owned 5 VW's 2 GTI's, 1 2004 R32, and 2 Jetta's. And I think I'll be getting the 2015 WRX over this. Makes me sad, but I think I'll be happier with the subbie!
yep! sad but true
Well if you care about interior quality then the GTI is better. WRX has alot of cheap, hard plastics.
If you are buying a GTI for straight out power then you are a complete moron. As someone who owns a 13' GTI that was not meant as a dig towards the GTI. The GTI gives you a sporty ride, great MPGs, and you will actually impress people when they get inside. It's not going to kill other cars in the 1/4mile but with a mild tune and a decent set of tires you get a great all around car.
As a former 04 R32 owner that was modded to 300+ HP, whose now driving a BMW with 350HP and 400TQ I doubt I'll be happy going back to a GTI with 227hp. I agree great cars and great interior. I drove an 01 GTI VR6, and an 03 20th AE GTI. So I know well and good how awesome the cars are. But this Moron VW lover is jumping ship and getting a 2015 WRX. Mainly for the AWD and the handling. Thanks Matthew for commenting.
You would not even notice a 10hp increase on a car with 140 HP nevermind more than 200
next time add engine sound!
maybe i can buy it after 15 years maybe :/
Only 10 years to go
I was pretty upset that most of the extra goodies found on European versions are deleted on North American versions. On the other hand, at least they installed the standard handle parking brake. Still, why does VW remove the other stuff like adapting cruise control. I had to pay the equivalent of an extra 3,000 Pounds and VW STILL deleted the headlamp washers! For the equivalent of 31,000 Pounds, they SHOULD include them. Despite the great performance and the top notch interior, it's overpriced for what they give you if you're the unfortunate ones on the west side of the Atlantic. Worse, unlike MINI, they won't let you configure the car the way you want. I wanted checkered cloth seats with the sunroof and automatic a/c. They won't do it. You have to sacrifice one or two features to get the other. Bad marketing and customer service VW, maybe you should listen to your customers. MINI didn't so they lost me. They ruined the Clubman by stretching it to unbelieveable length (it's actually one of the longest models they make now!), killed the third door and now it looks like a chopped up Countryman SUV with a lowered suspension. Ugly as hell. I told MINI, bye bye. I'll look elsewhere. That's what happens when you don't listen to your customers. I've talked to others online and they don't like it either. One suggested the GTI for something similar.
I think Clubman looks great actually.
seats look good? omg, where are you from? it is like my grandparetns pijamas
That's not an accurate explanation of what the GTI does without a limited slip differential...
Ok review, but come on dude the car is WAY too expensive now for what it is. To put things into perspective - you can buy an M135i or M235i on broadspeed for the same dealership price as a GTI, and the performance is in a completely different league, not to mention the versatility as a track-day tool.
I don't know where you live but 1 series BMWs are more expensive than the GTI.
uhhhh... The golf r is a more powerful gti. Why does this guy never mention it?
I think the point of a hot hatch is to be affordable. The Golf R is a shit ton more expensive. Plus the last one was nothing to really write home about. When it comes to performance and value both, the GTI PP wins.
viper689 The last one was basically a S3 for basically half the price. Just with a golf body and different badges...
Actually for every day driving it doesn't make any difference but hey for 1k extra why not to have it :)
omdz 0.1secs whoopty doo, would you even notice that? I very much doubt it!!
It's not just the 0-62 which is improved but more importantly in gear acceleration. Don't forget the tune only adds 10bhp but it will add a nice chunk of torque too which makes a difference.
I was specifically talking about the 0-62. not in gear he highlighted 0.1 sec which you really wouldn't notice at all.
Tanveer Akbar it adds 0 torque lol look it up just 10 bhp
Ro W yea but thats stupid to just consider 0-62, you're never going to just be doing 0-62 are you??
Finnian Cooke I spoke about 0-62 because it was a highlight??!!
Gran ferro
10bhp more OMG that's awesome lol ...well worth the 1000 quid extra 😂😂😂
Much better looking car than the golf R on same year 👍🏼
I wish you really knew how a Limited Slip Diff worked. What you said was 100% WRONG
Oh dear.
Bad review imo.
First you keep saying stuff like 'this is the best hatchback in the world' and just no. Cars like BMW M135i, Audi RS3 are also hatchbacks and are just on a whole diffrent level of performance. Secondly you keep going way over the top about the 'performance pack' its a fkn 900£ option, you act like its of a whoooole diffrent league... It ads 10 HP, you won't even be able to notice that. The actual biggest diffrence it makes is the LSD and you give pretty much 0 attention to it, you even call it 'very boring but it just makes it go faster'. Pretty bad review.
+Minutemadex ,you're dumbass
Howso? Please explain what makes you say that. I called this review out to be pretty bad but atleast I stated my opinion instead of just talking shit without refering to any facts or info as to why you call someone out.
+Minutemadex Good comments. I bought an SE over an S w/PP because I honestly couldn't tell the difference after a few test drives and didn't think having the PP would make much difference living in a warm-weather city and not tracking the car. The sunroof, leather seats, better speakers, etc, seemed the better long-term choice.
+Zwivhuya Sivhabu
You are a Fukin dumbass
Any one else considering one in 2021? 👍🏻😅
there are 3 cars better than the gti, hell 4 infact. the gti oerformance, the gti clubsport, the fuckin R and the R400
