  • Want the ultimate version of the Golf GTI? You'll want the Golf GTI Performance Pack. It costs £980 extra, but for that you get more power, better brakes and a limited slip differential. But does it also give you bragging rights over every other GTI owner? Rory Reid hops in to find out.

    Getting mine tomorrow, black, 5dr, manual, Performance Pack.... of course! It's a no brainer, for the diff alone. Can't wait to get my mitts on this beastie. My first GTI :)

    It saddens me that most people only care about horse powers. All experienced car owners know and appreciate the chassis, balance, interior design and the overall feel of the car. Sure, a Subaru STi is fast but when you drive it daily you'll start to notice the imperfection in the gears ratio, the uncomfortable suspension that makes your interior rattle like crazy.

      Sold my WRX which I tuned it to 360hp to get into a mkvii gti autobahn w/ perf and lighting package. The dsg can be tuned and of course the engine too. It's a perfect hatch in my opinion. The gear ratio on the WRX was a joke. The 6 spd was a joke. I loved the handling though.....but after almost 2 years that alone didn't keep me a subie guy.

    You are wrong when explaining the differential lock. The normal GTI doesn't go 50/50 on power distribution. It has a normal differential like every other modern car, which means it can give 100/0. But this is bad, under certain circumstances, like when one wheel is in dirt. The special thing about the differential lock in the GTI Performance is that it limits the distribution range, e.g. until a maximum of 70/30.

    tune the engine for power (GTis are famously detuned from the factory for fuel economy), and you can easily get another 20% more horsepower, so it goes from a decent 227 to an almost terrifying 270. and that's JUST a tune, absolutely no other mods

  • @gtiw7
    @gtiw7 11 лет назад +1

    Hi, I have the normal GTI, I doubt performance will have different consumption when it come to driving in a very "mature style" as it's a mere tune that gives the performance GTi that extra 10HP ( no hardware differences other than diff & brakes)
    the car will do 6.6L/100km on highways, not sure you can get that inside a city... p.s highway speed range in my country is 100-120km/h, consumption might differ depending on your speed
    thanks hope this was informative and clear

      Dino Prašo alot of reviews say they rather have the gti over the golf r. The gti feels better through the hills. The golf r just feels to easy to drive. The real only great thing the golf r has is the acceleration from a stop.

    I've got a 2017 VW Gti PP manual, but if I'm honest I thought the handling would be better, or at least more feel in the handling, yes it's fast 245Bhp, but how fast can you really go, I want lots of feel from a car, and I feel the steering is too light, even in Sport Mode, brakes could have more grab and feel, however it is a great place to be, and a great all rounder.

    To address all those rebutting the claim this video makes that the GTI is the best hot hatch via "umm hello what about the Golf R" -- to my mind, I don't think the Golf R fits into the genre of "hot hatch", nor does an Audi S3. Those are far more expensive, far more performance oriented, four wheel drive hatches; they're in a league far above the GTI, particularly considering price point. What the GTI should be *realistically* compared to is a Mini Cooper S, Fiat Abarth, Mazda 3 Speed, etc. Front wheel drive, affordable, practical, zesty hatchbacks. Of those, I agree with this video, the GTI takes the cake. Nothing hits all the stops (price, performance, refinement) as does the GTI. No one chooses a GTI because they liked it more than the R, just like no one chooses a Cayman over Carrera for the perfromance. They're totally different price point leagues and they shouldn't be thought of as comparable.
    With that, this guy and his production team are fit for the BBC, or Netflix. Dude is on point. Also, of the strange wheel switch-up -- can someone name the first set of wheels shown? I want to sell my generic GTI wheels for those, day nice.

    • @massiveglove2960

    • @tredfxman

      Emerson Ward But Someone. Me for example picked the GTI Clubsport before the R. You think only engine? Rvis little faster but cars not only bout engines brakes or whatever, they also bout price & definetly Looks. Clubsport is more special than R, sorry just saying... My newly ordered one for example will come individually numbered as well as its a special edition (Edition 40). Listen to Carz.co.za review, they even say GTI CS is better! ;)

  • @joaosoares3719
    @joaosoares3719 11 лет назад

    1) No, it's not. Unless you're Vettel you can't tell the difference of 0.1 seconds from 0-62mph. And the in-gear acceleration is exactly the same.
    2) Dude, what?? What I meant was that a DSG gearbox is slow as hell when it comes to fast handbrake turns and reaccelerations so it doesn't make any sense to bitch about the lack of a manual handbrake when your car is already a DSG one.

  • @DrRonPaul12
    @DrRonPaul12 10 лет назад

    6.5 seconds? Seems a bit slow. The 9th gen si does like 5.9-6.1 with no turbo.
    Does the manual version come with an electric e-brake as well? It's also a little ridiculous that you have to pay extra to get the limited slip. Otherwise, it is one fresh whip.

    Excellent in-depth review, but to the point....well done :)
    I have always liked Golfs & I LOVE these latest past couple of years models, but I'd still take the Astra AS OPC (Opel equivalent of your VXR). The Focus ST reminds me most of my younger 'Hoon days', but, it's just that....the more immature of the 3 cars. And for me, personally, the Megane RS doesn't even rate. Nowhere near enough extras & a very basic interior for an expensive price-tag :(

It's also got a camera in the front bumper reading the road to stop you having a crash at low speeds & because of this it's 5 insurances groups lower than a mk6 gti & does 47 mpg how can anyone not like this car

    I plan on get a WRX soon, and I don't know why Subaru can't build really cool cloth seats like these. I think I would all most get the cloth seats over the leather seats if I had the money in the GTI, the plaid is that awesome.

      @MrGovenator1 9 лет назад

      Jack Attack I have heard that the GTI is a real treat to drive. And I all so heard the WRX is kind of underwhelming. Its probably because its gotten so nice over the years, and lost some of its rawness. I drove my brothers 03 WRX, and that car is just a blast to drive. I am all so considering a Fiesta ST. I have 2 months though to think about it.

    This review is a victory of style over substance. Good production values, but the content is utter tripe.
    The GTI is a brilliant hot hatch (I own a MKV and am about to upgrade to a MK7 GTI PP), but it's a stretch to call it the best hot hatch in the world. It's a great all-rounder, but what about the R, A45, RS3 or the M135i?
    The extra 10 hp / 7 kW doesn't make a lick of difference to performance. The GTI PP is heavier than the standard GTI, so it basically cancels it out. Yet this guy reckons it's like t's been "mainlining Red Bull". 0.1 of a second. Please.
    The trick LSD is "boring" and the e-parking brake "almost single-handedly ruins this car". I know Jeremy Clarkson became quite wealthy from making moronic hyperbolic statements about cars, but you haven't quite nailed the recipe here. It is possible to be entertaining and informative at the same time.

    • @eslgurucalif
      @eslgurucalif 8 лет назад

      +Reece Lyndon Thanks for your commentary. I recently bought the GTI SE over a GTI S w/PP because I honestly couldn't tell the difference on a series of test drives. I am wondering, though, why you still bought the GTI w/PP?

    • @gitlyndon
      @gitlyndon 8 лет назад +1

      +eslgurucalif - I ended not buying the GTI PP as we needed more space, so got a Golf R Wolfsburg wagon, which is a limited edition model here in Australia. It's brilliant.
      If I didn't need the space, I'd have probably gone for the GTI PP, as I think it's agility and responsiveness makes it a more rewarding drive than the R (though not as quick), and the trick diff makes enough of a difference at the limit to make it worthwhile.
      All three (GTI, GTI PP & R) are brilliant cars though. If any one of them meets your practical needs, you'll be happy.
      Enjoy.

    Why so negative?
    1. It is different in acceleration. That's why it has a faster 0-62mph time. It accelerates better in-gear, too.
    2. There's no engineering reason they can't make a handbrake that locks the rear wheels - even with a DSG. If we ask for it, maybe they'll build it. NASA put a man on the moon, doggy.
    3. You're not exactly Rory Reid, but thanks for the feedback :)

    Things wrong with this review(er):
    1) Claiming the power bump of the PP is noticeable. It's not. The PP is no different at all in acceleration; what you get is a faster deceleration into corners, courtesy of the better brakes, and a better traction out them, especially tight ones, courtesy of the LSD.
    2) Bitching about the lack of a manual handbrake because "you can't make the classic move of a handbrake turn" when you're driving a DSG model.
    So, not exactly Chris Harris then...

      ha ha, I'm here checking this out, but thinking the same thing. I've owned 5 VW's 2 GTI's, 1 2004 R32, and 2 Jetta's. And I think I'll be getting the 2015 WRX over this. Makes me sad, but I think I'll be happier with the subbie!

      Well if you care about interior quality then the GTI is better. WRX has alot of cheap, hard plastics.

      If you are buying a GTI for straight out power then you are a complete moron. As someone who owns a 13' GTI that was not meant as a dig towards the GTI. The GTI gives you a sporty ride, great MPGs, and you will actually impress people when they get inside. It's not going to kill other cars in the 1/4mile but with a mild tune and a decent set of tires you get a great all around car.

      As a former 04 R32 owner that was modded to 300+ HP, whose now driving a BMW with 350HP and 400TQ I doubt I'll be happy going back to a GTI with 227hp. I agree great cars and great interior. I drove an 01 GTI VR6, and an 03 20th AE GTI. So I know well and good how awesome the cars are. But this Moron VW lover is jumping ship and getting a 2015 WRX. Mainly for the AWD and the handling. Thanks Matthew for commenting.

    Will the stateside version get the same MPG rating?

    • @tomeisenmenger6475
      @tomeisenmenger6475 10 лет назад

      UK ratings are generally much higher than US. Same car, different tests. I did read that we can expect an 18% improvement - if that's the case, we're talking about an EPA rating of 24/36 up from the current 21/31. If you're really interested in MPG, they're bringing the GTD with its performance TDI engine over as well.

    • @rjmari
      @rjmari 10 лет назад

      Tom Eisenmenger UK ratings are 'higher' because their gallons are larger than US gallons. So they get more mileage per each of their larger gallons. I think an imperial gallon is something like 20% larger than a US gallon.

    • @rjmari
      @rjmari 10 лет назад

      I don't think they change anything in regards to the powertrain b/w UK and US, so these should get the extra bump in mileage. Keep in mind that they claim 18% increase from current model, which is 24city/33hwy for DSG. 18% increase of that is 28city/39hwy, which will probably average 32-33mpg. Not too shabby.

    I was pretty upset that most of the extra goodies found on European versions are deleted on North American versions. On the other hand, at least they installed the standard handle parking brake. Still, why does VW remove the other stuff like adapting cruise control. I had to pay the equivalent of an extra 3,000 Pounds and VW STILL deleted the headlamp washers! For the equivalent of 31,000 Pounds, they SHOULD include them. Despite the great performance and the top notch interior, it's overpriced for what they give you if you're the unfortunate ones on the west side of the Atlantic. Worse, unlike MINI, they won't let you configure the car the way you want. I wanted checkered cloth seats with the sunroof and automatic a/c. They won't do it. You have to sacrifice one or two features to get the other. Bad marketing and customer service VW, maybe you should listen to your customers. MINI didn't so they lost me. They ruined the Clubman by stretching it to unbelieveable length (it's actually one of the longest models they make now!), killed the third door and now it looks like a chopped up Countryman SUV with a lowered suspension. Ugly as hell. I told MINI, bye bye. I'll look elsewhere. That's what happens when you don't listen to your customers. I've talked to others online and they don't like it either. One suggested the GTI for something similar.

    Manual or dsg?
    Which is better for the car?

    • @JayTac1
      @JayTac1 8 лет назад

      It's all preference. DSG feels a little clunky at low speeds, mine does anyway, but other than that it's great. I imagine the dual clutch system in the Evo or Porsche PDK's are probably better though.

    • @robert.reimon
      @robert.reimon 8 лет назад

      +JayTac1 thanks...a few days ago I tried the DSG and finally if I get the car it will be manual. Dsg in accelerarion was great but not good at low speed.

      Roberto Ramon i had manual on my GT R-Line 2012. But finally goin DSG on my newly ordered GTI Clubsport. Test drove it before buy & already loving it. So smooth & quick shifts. Obviously DSG is better for the engine, because engine itself selects when transmission should happen. But i loved my manual too! VWs manual must be World Class! :)

      I think the point of a hot hatch is to be affordable. The Golf R is a shit ton more expensive. Plus the last one was nothing to really write home about. When it comes to performance and value both, the GTI PP wins.

      It's not just the 0-62 which is improved but more importantly in gear acceleration. Don't forget the tune only adds 10bhp but it will add a nice chunk of torque too which makes a difference.

    • @alliancemad
      @alliancemad 9 лет назад

      I was specifically talking about the 0-62. not in gear he highlighted 0.1 sec which you really wouldn't notice at all.
