    In Vancouver BC my Niro Ex gets 4 litres/100km (70 mpg) in mostly city summer driving. After 2 years of trouble free driving i have learned how to minimize the fuel consumption. You can obtain much better results than the EPA ratings if you pay attention and learn how to accelerate from a standstill without kicking in the engine and also use the hills etc to keep the gas motor from kicking in. It takes practice. On some city routes I can get as low as 3.4 l/ 100 km. If you play around with the sport mode going up steep hills you will notice the power range drop down towards the eco area. Just one trick learned over time. Playing with the brake pedal going down slight grades to make the charging stronger is another trick, just watch the gage as you feather the brake pedal. Its become a bit of a game for me as I can smile a bit when I avoid the price gouging gas stations here in Vancouver for 920km between the 40 litres fill ups!

    I have had my 2018 Niro for 18 months with 33000 miles. My average is 54.75 mpg. That is mostly country roads where I am driving 45 to 55 mph. On city streets it does a whole lot better and interstate highways it does not quite as well. Somebody asked about wind noise; there is some, but it is no worse than what it was in the Toyota Matrix that this replaced. I have not seen anything else that I think is a better value for the money this costs.

    Thanks for your video which I have watched for many times before I purchased my Niro Hybrid. I got the Niro EX (I believe the SX model tested is heaver and has a wider tire that does cost more friction) in November after the used 2005 diesel SM-Art car died (Avg. 4~5L/100Km full throttle all the time) and driven over 9,000 Km on the Niro now (had first oil change at 8,000Km). With many hours studying Hypermiling (speed limit driving only) on RUclips I got 3.8/3.9L/100Km in November with stock tires & rims and now I am getting average of 4.5 L/100Km even when I drove 1,200 Km (highway speed) to and back from Ontario to Quebec with climate control (driver only) set to 19C in December/January with snow tires. Without the heater and only use heated seat (low) and heated steering column I would usually get 3.8 ~ 4.3 L/100Km during January and February driving condition depending on the temperature with snow tires. My display shown 949Km in November and now 874Km in February during colder season when refilled.
    These are thing I have done to the Niro: Use only premium 91 Octane fuel (as ethanol though cheaper produce less 20% energy and not cleaner due to the current BTEX bland by the gasoline company) . Replace all interior and exterior bulbs except turning signals to LED bulbs (on the first day ~ $100.00). Replace front wipers with 2019 Honda Civic aerodynamic beam wipers (~$50.00). Using stock tire & rim and Micheline X-ice 3 (low rolling resistance tire) at 45PSI with a set of used 16" KIA OPTIMA Hybrid rims ($300.00+65.00 TPMS from Amazon) for the snow tires. Have the Premium block heater installed ($300.00 dealer installed) and connected with a Wi-Fi timer to pre-heat the engine coolant 4 hr. before driving time (instant heat when climate control is turned on). Replace the air filter with a K&N air filter ($65.00) as I have always done in every car I own (including the current 2004 Toyota Sienna I bought in 2003 and still getting avg. 8~9L/100Km after 300,000Km+). Installed a set of wide curved side mirror ($35.00) which affect nothing on the millage but I get absolutely no blind spot when changing lanes, parking close to side road curves and backing up (especially with the super bright LED backup light!). Thanks again for helping me making my decision on this car. I got an extended 10 year 200,000Km warranty on it so it should last me for a while.
    UPDATE 2020/10/06:
    After driving just over one year and over 10,000Km I am getting average about 24~26.8 Km/L (around 3.6~3.77L/100Km) with usage of air condition running during the summer and heater now in fall while using the stock tires at 40 PSI (checked every two weeks or whenever large swing in the temperature) and a lot of cruse control at 5~10 Km above speed limit. I do notice that the heater does draw much more power and the heated seat in which the heated seat only take less than 5% of the heater (1300 Watt).

    • @DooDicky
      @DooDicky 8 месяцев назад +1

      So its better to turn off climate control and use heated seats as much as possible? Also how much less did Optima wheels weight compared to Niros?

    • @Jeo-What
      @Jeo-What 8 месяцев назад

      When the engine is cold, I do avoid using the climate control as much as possible without freezing myself; however, while I am still driving to generate engine heat to keep engine at 40% warmth and battery is at 50% charge I do turn on the climate to warm up the cebine to get it up to the preset temperature. The electric heater consumes much less power once it reaches the preset temperature.
      I have never weighted the wheels so I do not know; however, my son who worked at America Eagle, a international wheel company says that the Optima weights very light when he picked it up.

    • @DooDicky
      @DooDicky 8 месяцев назад

      @@Jeo-What awesome, does the climate control really make that much difference? Like if i keep it at 73 F or at High will it make tons of difference in consumption?

    • @Jeo-What
      @Jeo-What 8 месяцев назад

      @@DooDicky it really depending on the outside temperature and how quickly the vehicle loses warmth dropping below the preset temperature. Like home heating, the lower the temperature setting the less the thermostat would kick in and the quicker the heater is able to reach the preset temperature. I only use auto so setting on High would use more energy for sure.

    Very helpful to know the mostly highway fuel economy. Hybrids tend to underperform their rating and especially hybrids with higher coefficients of drag like the kia niro versus, say a Toyota prius.

    Took two 3 hour trips, back and forth. Combined traffic and highway with speeds up to 75 mph where the limit was 60 mph, I got an average of 55 MPG. I’m not a slow driver, I keep up and pass cars, but it still did great. I think you may have a very, very heavy foot. My Kia Niro is a 2018 hybrid btw.

    Just for reference, the best tank on a long road trip last fall in my 2018 Outback with the 2.5L 4-banger was 6.8 L/100km. This was a calculated fuel consumption rate and not the number shown on the instrument cluster. It had also recorded a couple of tanks of 7.2 L/100km and 7.4 L/100km.

    I have a 2019 Niro. My overall consumption during 2.5 years is 49 mpg. I live in south sweden so shortish summers and coldish winters. During spring and summer i do many trips at 65 mpg and the lowest i get on my way home from work regularly is 75 mpg. My driving is about 30% under 31 mph, 40% under 50 mph and 30% under 69 mph. Rougly that means 30% city or suburb driving, 40% country road driving and 30% highway driving all in a tempered climate so spring - summer - autumn - winter. Car is always parked outside and uses no engine or cabin heater. For the size its a nice car. And im 6' 2" and weighs 105 kg.

    My wife and I have a 19 Niro , great car . It gets way better mileage in warmer weather , usually 4.5 to 5.0 litres to 100k . At modest speeds on the highway the electric motor does help out but especially in warmer weather . I live in Winnipeg and even when it's _ 25 c out I get almost double the gas mileage in city stop and go driving compared to my old 04 Focus .

    driving on a national road, i can achieve 2,8 in certain conditions, especially when climbing and descending :)
    on the highway, the fuel economy depends on the speed; there is a huge difference between driving at 110 km/h and driving at 140 km/h...

    Niro owners: what do you think of wind noise? I took one for a test drive (a L model in Canada) and it was very noisy on the highway. There was a lot of wind, but it seemed a lot louder than my Focus (which is a very quiet car). What do all of you think?

    Thanks for practical fuel economy review, it’s very rear information, this info on Niro sounds legitimate, I test drove it back when it’s just came out little over a year ago, and my impressions was also that Niro was best for country roads and city, coz at highway it’s ok for right lane or following the flow...
    BTW could you do a Niro PHEV fuel test, please? There some samples of those at each dealership around Cleveland. Oh, so ther might be a some that you could take for a short week? Thanks in advance and will be looking forward for your review.

    • @maksymborodai322
      @maksymborodai322 2 года назад

      @@mrnamdar yes it's mostly in economical mode which I have 90% of the time you can find it in a dashboard menu.
      Hybrid mode works differently switching between normal engine and it depends on how you hit an accel. pedal, weather conditions, battery charge, uphill areas and such. You may gain that digits(3.8-4.2l/100km) if you not exceed speed limits within a city and roads are relatively flat, that said driving slow (outside is warm above +5C)giving you super fuel efficiency. It's totally doable! I'm used to drive slow not exceeding any speed limits and I'm saving my money on fuel.
      You can not drive only on ev mode, when the battery discharged lower half, the engine starts along with the motor generator to charge it till half and the cycle starts over.

    • @maksymborodai322
      @maksymborodai322 2 года назад

      @@mrnamdar it's all depends don't expect many miles on ev because its not fully electrical!
      If the battery a bit over than half full and a road is decent ,no steep hills hmm maybe up till 3-4 miles and accel pedal is hit gently.
      You might drive more miles when you on a highways running 110km/h it switches to electrical motor every so often and there you might reach 8-9miles.
      Just keep in mind this car likes running slow to gain a fuel efficiency speed is up to 30-35mi. İt's the good car driving within a city.

    For me this car has not better efficiency than good diesel 1.6 for example. The electric car it is a fake because electric engine make sense but plugged to fuel engine but battery is a joke. Stop bullshitting build car with lpg engine which will provide energy for 4 electrc engine for four wheels. This is easy and efficient and very environmental friendly. LPG liquid petroleum gas very popular in Europe.
