These are the kind of bright minds I search for on TEDx. Very intelligent. I wish I knew more young adults like her with such insight. Unfortunately I rarely see them in actual life.
A State in the grip of neo-colonialism is not master of its own destiny. It is this factor which makes neo-colonialism such a serious threat to world peace. ― Kwame Nkrumah
Although I'm from the Philippines instead of the Caribbean, this hit very close to home. She's been able to articulate eloquently all that I couldn't say. I wish the algorithm enabled this talk to reach more audiences. It's a thought-provoking and significant point of contention for many. It's unfortunate that neocolonialism has become the default to the extent that people don't perceive its existence and how others have to navigate its confines.
Wow she's 17 and so smart! Very inspiring topic, which seems to apply to other post colonial countries too. I love how she mentioned the IMF and how it impacts countries to which it loans money.
it is fifth time that i watch this video, because this speech touched my heart on its deep wisdom and how this young lady is intellect and sharp mind. thanks for this
Well delivered speech, but some of the questions she asks suggest that she may not fully understand the nature of neo-colonialism. For example relationship between colony and colonialist is not analogous with child and parent.. As parents are working to uplift and support their child and not sabotage and exploit them as is the case with neocolonialists.
@@mariama8092 We are not dependent on them. But through their meddling in our affairs and their sabotage, they ensure that their stooges that they control are installed as are leaders. As these stooges who lead us take their instructions from the neocolonialists it appears we are dependent on them.
How do you plan on exporting solar energy? I understand neocolonialism, but honestly there isn't much a small island nation can export. Maybe turn it into a tech industry?
A little limited and very naïve, which is similar to lots of people far older and not as insightful. The real issue is who perpetuates it and why, and then how can we break this system. Neocolonialism is part of a scourge globally, a mere adjustment of the system that created slavery and still seeks captive markets and labor for their products. The only solutions can be international in scale and breaking and completely replacing the plutocratic, capitalist system responsible for it. The Global North, the West, the US and their tools like the World Bank and the IMF need to be done away with completely. Less talk of the economy, and more talk of people. The economy is just an abstract artificial creation to justify the actions of the corporate and political elites, local action and global solidarity focusing on people is what is needed.
@@bigevil1001 Never denied that that exists to some extent, but I also don't think it's necessarily bad. Western Civilization is just more developed, nothing will ever change that

Excellent points. With youths like her leading the way, the Caribbean is heading in the right direction.

Paternalism is still a problem in the Philippines too!
She seems knowledgeable and intelligent :)
to people who know nothing, she does.
What do you mean? Are you implying she is not? Why not discuss the content rather than your perception of how intelligent she is!!
Thank you for being brave enough to do what you believe in. love from sierra leone

I think it’s more to the point of why are we still so dependent on them after all these years
@@mariama8092 The reason is the sabotage and exploitation that is neocolonialism.

What if you held your leaders accountable and took responsibility for your own actions?
Are you attempting to deny the existence of neo-colonialism?
bigevil1001 usually when somebody is telling that IMF is bad it means that the IMF does not let this person rob their own country))
Our leaders are not the ones in control. That’s the point. Let us be in control and things would be different
Mariama who do u think rules your country?)))
And if it’s true, why do your government not make reforms which suggest international organizations?))
It's impossible we have to be rich first
really??? To be rich you first require the appropriate mindset.
Beware of neo colonial gimmicks and controlled opposition
Countries would be even worse! Ha
This is progress. You’re not denying the existence of neocolonialism anymore.
No, we would be thriving, but I don’t know about the white people.

João Paulo Oliveira Viscaino it’s more developed because of Africa and we have not got the recognition for that. We are still being used.
