- Zeinab Badawi crystallised how vital it is to understand oneself and one’s history to move forward with pride. Her talk galvanised the TEDxEuston community and shares the rich history of Africa that has often been veiled and hidden for so long. Africa has the most extended history, and in her words: “if you are not African you are an African import”.
Zeinab Badawi was born in Sudan and moved to London when she was two years old. A graduate of Oxford University and a holder of two honorary doctorates, Zeinab has extensive experience in television and radio. She presents BBC’s Hard Talk, BBC World TV’s Global Questions and World Debates and has produced and presented- through her own production company- many programmes, including the tv- series of African history in association with UNESCO. She has won many awards, chairs the Royal African Society, and is/has been on the board of among others, the British Council and the Overseas Development Institute.

@@davidn7508 you are indeed correct. I was not expecting the whole details as each episode has time constraints but it is a very good start. I hope this will inspire Africans to look further and learn all the details. Hopefully we will see more visual literature coming out of such activities.

I am Afro Cuban and I am a proud African descendant. I absolutely love this woman. What she had done by showng the true story of our ancestors is phenomenal. This work is truly important for all of us in the diaspora to digest. I watched the entire series with my four children who are very young. I was elated to have such a powerful presentation of African history to begin shaping their sense of self.

I am African American and today I discovered the History of Africa series which brought me here. I was immediately drawn in by the truth so eloquently spoken by this beautiful and highly intelligent woman. So much of what I learned in history class about Africa made it seem there was little relevant history in Africa outside of European colonial activity. Africa has a rich history that cannot be ignored, and thank you Ms. Badawi for your passion in giving an enlightening presentation from an African perspective. By reclaiming our narrative we assert our true relevance.
A highly British professional figure that still maintain and proud of her Sudanese ethnicity . A role model for women who were born in the West and forgot their grass roots.

Read history as presented from Africans. For example: we were taught Mongo Park discovered River Niger. For who? Europeans. We Africans have lived and fished in River Kuora now called Niger by the Europeans for ever.
She is a billionaire why isn't she putting her money where her mouth is, build schools and hospitals for your people put up large grocery stores create jobs for them why look across the water for what is already in your land.

I live in France, and what I’ve noticed is that children of African decent born here consider themselves as French and not African. It is almost a taboo to even speak your local dialect around your friends. There is a total denial of African ancestry and it’s largely coming from the educational system. It’s the saddest thing.
This is global.
Living outside of your country is tough. Have pity on those kids. Non white people in France (and other countries) have to battle for their rights in that country and have to assert that they are French just like the white people. If they cannot claim French identity, many white French would say “go back to your country”. It’s a tough needle to thread, not forgetting your blood identity but also trying to make sure that you get what you need from the country that colonized your ancestors.
There is total denial because most African parents don't know their history and do have a sense of inferiority complex which they pass on to their children. The french system will not "educate" African children so parents must embrace their culture and history and teach their children.
African it is not a nationality
Such a foolish notion. The French treat Africans so badly. People claim your Africanity

If I wanted to know what it feels like to have actually lived a life that made a difference, I have only to look at Zeinab Badawi. Thank you sister, blessings go with you and yours.

If you are watching this video, that means like me, you are looking for your identity, self-respect and claiming your own narrative. My ancestors are from Africa, I have always walked with poise and confidence. I never needed anyone to validates me. I'm so impressed by this show. It was an eye-opener for me as an African American that doesn't know my history even though both of my parents are from West Africa but we were not thought about our culture and history. Thank you for this lecture Zeinab for the visual journey to Africa Continent.

Amazing; I am an Afrikan American woman a little younger than Zeinab, I wasn't sure of what she was going to talk about, but she Wowed me!
I am so grateful to have had a chance to see this wonderful talk from such a beautiful sister. I do hope that we across the diaspora will realize our strength and power we have as a collective, because going forward as one people should be the overall goal. the problem maybe, is that a majority of us want to adopt and adapt the colonize ways when they do not factor in where we must go together. Brothers and sister the white establishment do not matter.
Wonderful to hear from Zeinab Badawi and her quest to bring history to our dinner table and coffee tea shops, I thank Zeinab Badwi for showing how wonderful it will be to bring all history of the world and soon to be the universe to our sitting areas.

Listened to most of these BBC series and was pleasantly surprised that most of what you said was in sync with what i have heard from people like Professor James Small; Professor Ben Jochannan; Professor Henrick Clarke.
You've inspired many millions Zeinab Badawi us to be re educated.Thank you for a wonderful series. I agree 100% that knowing ones ancient history is both powerful and necessary. Decolonizing history is a very important part of our education. Many us have always felt a systematic mis education and lack of genuine African history and culture as taught in western schools.
I’ve been watching the Africa series on RUclips very educational, I wondered about you and here you are on Tedx giving an interesting talk. Thank you so much for your work, we need the African knowledge because you know the conquer or colonizer is the one to write his story, so we need accurate history.

This lecture was brilliantly delivered by Ms Badawi. The sad reality is that this mindset has continued today. It has had a negative impact on how Africans see themselves and their history. In fact, most Africans are apathetic towards their history whenever it is raised

As a Sudanese woman I wish she touched on the Arab colonization of north and east Africa. Why is Arabic the national language of Sudan? Why aren't local languages like Nubian taught in schools and university's. I'm nubian and I'm ashamed I can't speak a word of Nubian
That's really sad. Sudan has such a rich history. It seems this is an issue in many African countries. It's like their roots have been forgotten.
Don't let the language die. Do something now.

What the BBC series " History of Africa with Zeinab Badawi" has done is not just tell a great story in words, but it has taken viewers "there'' using great videos and pictures to illustrate "lives in the past", of many and different kingdoms that rose and fell in Africa, even before Christ Era to the recent past. The evidence in the artifacts, ruins, cave drawings, traditions etc etc, demonstrate a rich history of the African continent and is sure to make us proud not just Africans, but as a human race, of where and how far we have come from.
