We Don't Know Why They Call It Chili Sauce - It's Gourmet Ketchup!

  • This is Dave's Aunt Sandy's chili sauce recipe. It's been a family favourite for decades. We're not sure how it ever got the name 'chili' sauce. It's probably one of the best homemade Ketchup alternatives out there. Enjoy!

EXACT recipe I inherited from my mother in law (with exception of adding 1 c. celery) and we refer to it as Chow Chow. Awesome Job!

Interesting, my grandma’s chow chow calls for cabbage & green tomatoes (no red).

@@lindagraves3250 Yes, I believe most people make Chow chow with green tomatoes and cabbage. My in laws referred to this recipe as chow chow and the name stuck. It's a delicious recipe.

That looks really tasty. We don't have enough tomatoes left to try, but I'll remember this one for next year! We've made a similar recipe, I think it was called "country ketchup". Biggest difference I remember was there were no apples, and the onion / pepper was browned as the first step.

Wow - I have almost the identical recipe, hand written on foolscap - how is that for an old term, that is how long I have had this. I made some this week and have been doing so for over 40 years. I was taught to boil everything except the sugar for the two hours an add the sugar about 20 minutes prior to canning to eliminate the possibility of burning the sugar if it boils down to much. I also make this with the windows open to watch the expressions of the people walking by the house when they get a whiff - the smell is intoxicating

Heinz makes chili sauce and it's indeed just a gourmet sweeter ketchup. My favorite use is in a shrimp dip recipe.
