This video explained it the most thorough and quickest I’ve ever ever seen!! You were soo thorough but so simple with how you explained it! Wish I would’ve had this video when I was brand new to figuring it out!
Just bought a Breville today and I was struggling. This video was so much more informative than manufacturer’s instructions! After watching I was able to immediately make a fantastic latte. Thank you SO much!!
I’ve been around the espresso world for around two years and I know enough to make good coffee. I’m here just tell all of those how are new in espresso making ..this is a great video!! This dude did a great job on explaining the basics and fundamentals of how to use and extract espresso coffee. Such of great video!!
The most useful work for Barista Express beginners in ten minutes, thank you. I made first espresso after watching this video... Thank you so much Ethan. You have prepared a very explanatory, fluent video and full of tips that others have not mentioned. Love it.
i’ve had my machine for almost a year now and i’ve watched so many videos and i’ve literally never been able to make a good espresso without dialing at least 2-3 times first. i followed you step by step and it’s the first good espresso i’ve made on the first try!!!
Update: finally got my machine yesterday and made my first latte today! It's SO good! Thanks for all this info! I wrote everything down and my very first coffee was a success! I just ordered an espresso machine and had no idea where to even begin! This has answered so many of my questions and I'll be writing these things down until ive got the hang of it 😁 thank you so much!
I have the same exact Breville machine and it’s sitting in my basement on a shelf because I just couldn’t get my espresso right! This video was awesome and I’m getting my machine back out and following your video and making probably the best espresso I have ever made!! Thank you!! 😊
Just bought this machine and tried making espresso the coffee pick after the pour was coming out soupy than dry. This video helps a lot. Thank you. I'll try the steps and the tips explained for future brewing. Cheers
Got the machine yesterday. Had a bit of an idea on how to use it, but this made it all make sense. Now ordered a scale, so thanks for costing me another 50 quid!
Este video es todo lo que necesitas cuando compras la barista express ❤❤❤. Thank you for sharing your knowledge ⭐️ greets from Playa del Carmen, Mexico!!!
Bro thank you so much. I was gonna buy this machine but i decided to wait for the new Ninja Luxe Espresso Machine, but now i think i’m gonna pull the trigger on the brevile
Hey Ethan, I normally don’t comment on your videos but I just wanted to thank you for this amazingly informative video about not just this machine but also coffee in general. I’m planning on getting your FLUR espresso glasses soon and I can’t to use them! ❤
Ethan!! This video was very thorough and easy to understand!! Thank you for this! That was the exact espresso machine I was looking to getting later this year
Super interesting video! Question - I have the breville barista max and while the grinder can grind rly fine, the machine can't seem to create the pressure necessary to pull the shot. What can I do if I literally can't make the grind size finer without choking out the machine??
I love your videos, and don’t know where to post this, but one thing I think you should add to your collection is Turkish coffee. It’s probably my favorite way to drink coffee
Do you have tips how to set up the Sage Barista Express for a "normal' coffee? All tutorials are for espresso (like 40 ml) but I want to make a coffee (which is around 100 ml for me). Does the extraction time still counts for 25-35 sec? Or should it be longer? And what is the starting point? The moment you press the button or the moment the coffee comes out of the piston? Thank you very much! Best beginner's tutorial I've seen so far!
Hey Man, epic video! I'm still struggling with getting the pressure right. I have tried 18g of coffee and put the grind very fine and it's still not getting enough. Should I add more coffee? I belive there is a second grind option inside the bean chamber. Does this need to be adjusted at all?
Oh, dang. I'm a fast food barista who uses an automated machine. In fast food, money is more important than people as well as actual coffee. I couldn't imagine having to learn all the preliminary coffee knowledge plus recipes.😮💨😮💨😮💨
Stupid question- when timing your 1:2 ratio, does it start when you hit the cup button (start brewing) or when you see the first drops of espresso emerge from portafilter?
Awesome video! One thing confuses me though. ive been doing latte art for 6 months and am STILL not sure if my milk has the right thickness...in every single video i hear a different time I am supposed to let in air into the milk...you for instance said 7 seconds...in a different video someone said that the usual 15 secs is not enough cause the sage barrista steamwand doesnt have enough power so i should go for 22 seconds....like....thats such a huuuuge difference
Hesitant to comment and ruin the perfect 69 comment count - but this was an INCREDIBLE, well-explained yet succinct, super informative video. I’ve had my BBE since Dec of last year and thought I had it all down tbh, until watching this😂Really excited to incorporate these tips and precision into my next brew. answered so many questions i had. thank you!!!
I’ll stick with my keurig, thanks. On a serious note, i wish i had the time to make a decent cup of coffee for myself, but i can only muster enough time to hit brew now on my drip coffee maker
also, when do i press the timer button on the scale? should i clock the moment i press the double shot button, or should it be pressed only when liquid begins to extrude?
Great video, thanks, Ethan! I understand the concepts and how to react according to how I get my shots, but I have to say that, at least for my palate, I can only get to a non-bitter taste when I extract fast shots. Every time I get on the "sweet spot" for dose, ratio, type of beans, grinding and time, I end up with a bitter shot, so I just gave up and don't care about timing anymore haha Any idea "out of the ordinary" of what to test in a case like this? P.S.: would love to know the grind setting you use on the internal burr grinder.
Very informative, I also own the breville and which is weird using fresh medium roast and using 18g and yield usually 37g and extraction time is between 25-28 but it taste sour any advice please
Using your first espresso machine doesn't have to be "overwhelming and terrible" as you say. I've owned a Hamilton Beach espresso machine for years that cost $100 and it makes good coffee drinks like cappuccino and latte. I'm upgrading now to a Delonghi but you just need to use your own sense of taste to adjust the time-dose-grind and all those parameters and you will easily make better drinks than what you might get at a chain coffee shop. Their cappuccinos are especially bad.
I have a question, when you click the button the produce coffee, it takes around 5 seconds until the first drip of liquid come out. should I count the 5s into the timer?
Ha! Count to 7 is exactly what I do. Actually I let my Breville Bambino Plus count for me. The pump pulses and makes a noise about every second when it’s running, so I just count to 7 like that
Most likely the Beans are too old. Try to buy freshly roasted beans and always avoid buying in the stores since they never have a roast date and are old most of the time. There are plenty of videos about this topic if you are further interested.
Please do a comparison of this machine vs the new ninja espresso luxe machine. That’s what ninja compared themselves with so it would be an interesting video!
The dual wall cups are not for pre-ground coffee. It creates more back pressure which changes the extraction and therefore the texture and flavor of the coffee. I’m surprised you don’t actually know what they are.
I continue to get bad pressure even after playing around with the coarse vs fine measurement. Very frustrating. Any idea why? Are you using the double basket? I want high pressure.
and when you programm lets say the double espresso shot to 38 grams...you press the button again when you reach 38 grams but it actually takes a while for the machine to stop pouring so i end up with more like 45 grams of espresso..do i have to calc that in when programming or is it actually gonna stop at 38 grams the next time?
I have been following your advice but the extraction time is very short? And i can’t get it to extract 36g of liquid (using 18g of coffee). Any advice? I have set the grinder size to 4
I have the whole setup. Breville Impress, pucks, open portafilter, WDT tool. Everything. My issue ! I grind 18g of beans. Then when I extract it pulls 64grams ~ of expresso. Like HOW ? I’ve done corse and fine grinds and same result
This video explained it the most thorough and quickest I’ve ever ever seen!! You were soo thorough but so simple with how you explained it! Wish I would’ve had this video when I was brand new to figuring it out!
Thanks so much! That was the goal :)
I never leave comments but this video literally saved me from all the confusion of this time-dose-grind situation. Thank you!
That ratio equation explanation cleared up SO MANY THINGS for me!! Thank you so much!!!
Just bought a Breville today and I was struggling. This video was so much more informative than manufacturer’s instructions! After watching I was able to immediately make a fantastic latte. Thank you SO much!!

I am an aspiring cafe/coffee shop owner and just bought my first BBE today. I made my first ever latte with the help of this video

Love the hand-drawn annotations. Clean, clear, and unique.

Just bought a used Breville exactly like the one in the video. This was the perfect video. Screw it, I subbed to the channel. 👍🏼
You know its a good day when ethan uploads
This video is fantastic! It needs to blow up for sure.
This video is absolutely great! Thank you for the precision! Amazing explanation!!
Picking up my machine today and so excited. Amazing and helpful video!
Very informative great video! Just bought my breville machine and this video has made it be soooo much less intimidating! You got my sub!
I literally just bought this machine on prime day thank you so much for the help I was struggling!
I love how you used a sketchbook for the instructions, so creative!
Bro..your break down for this was 👌🏾.
I appreciate how straight to the point that was.
What number do you have the inner burr too? Amazing video!
I love how you hand wrote everything
Este video es todo lo que necesitas cuando compras la barista express ❤❤❤.

Ethan!! This video was very thorough and easy to understand!! Thank you for this! That was the exact espresso machine I was looking to getting later this year
This was the most helpful video I've found breaking down everything espresso/breville! Thank you so much for your great content. New Subscriber :)
Yooooo, thank you man, great video. You leveled up my espresso game so much, newb here and its much appreciated.
Thanks so so much, this was well needed 😀
Glad it was helpful!
Love this video! Thanks!
Great video, thanks man.
Wow this is quite detailed. Thanks. I don’t have an espresso machine yet but I’m saving this video for when I do.
Super interesting video!

how the hell do you tell the difference between sour and bitter coffee :/
very educational. thank you
Wow 👏🏽👏🏽 you just summarize 3 other videos that I saved. Great work! Thank you for doing this video bro 🤙🏽
omg I really needed this!
Love the sketch book I need a printed copy asap 😅

What a nice, informative and well explained video. You should try the greek versions of cold espresso called Freddo Espresso and Freddo Cappuccino! 😉
A great video!!! Super informative and helpful 😊. Thank you
Sharing this with my mom!! 😄
Very helpful! Quick question though, when do you start timing it, is it from the second you press the button?
Do you have a link to the scale you used in this video?
I would say you're the best!!!
Brilliant diagrams perfectly explaining every aspect .
Question - what would you suggest about adjusting the internal burr grinder to ?
Thanks 👍
Hey Man, epic video! I'm still struggling with getting the pressure right. I have tried 18g of coffee and put the grind very fine and it's still not getting enough. Should I add more coffee? I belive there is a second grind option inside the bean chamber. Does this need to be adjusted at all?
I am having the same issue. Can't seem to find an answer 😕
I am trying to get into espresso and I was wondering what beans you suggest.
What about the breville barista pro!?? Can some of these tips also apply that machine
Oh, dang. I'm a fast food barista who uses an automated machine. In fast food, money is more important than people as well as actual coffee. I couldn't imagine having to learn all the preliminary coffee knowledge plus recipes.😮💨😮💨😮💨
I set grind on 2 and even using the pressure basket only get part way into the gray area for pressure.
Stupid question- when timing your 1:2 ratio, does it start when you hit the cup button (start brewing) or when you see the first drops of espresso emerge from portafilter?
Amazing Video!
Excellent video, thanks coach !
Hi , when do we actually start the timer?
First drop or once we push button? Thanks
Great explanation? Can you do a coffee siphon? I’ve been seeing them and they look cool
When do you start timing the roast? Is it when I press the double shot button or when liquid starts to come out? 🧐
Hellppp... please 😁

Hey, I just had two quick questions. Does the dosing funnel come with the machine? And am i supposed to use a double shot for a cappuccino?
also, when do i press the timer button on the scale? should i clock the moment i press the double shot button, or should it be pressed only when liquid begins to extrude?
Thank u for this brother

Holds up bag of tortilla chips, calls them potato chips. haha jokes aside, very helpful content!
Do you start timing the extraction when you hit the button or when you see the coffee start coming out when tracking time?
I have a question, when you click the button the produce coffee, it takes around 5 seconds until the first drip of liquid come out. should I count the 5s into the timer?
you are the man!
What about turning on the hot water at the beginning? The instructions say to do that before making espresso
Ty this helped so much!😁
Do we also have to program for the 1 shot button or it it technically already programmed in by itself?
Awesome let's start very good no worries you are trustworthy
Ha! Count to 7 is exactly what I do. Actually I let my Breville Bambino Plus count for me. The pump pulses and makes a noise about every second when it’s running, so I just count to 7 like that
Yo awesome video. I have a question though... What is (in your opinion) the #1 at home espresso machine that is pretty affordable like this one?
What grind size should I use for a single shot of espresso
Thank you sooooooooooo much
Any solutions for a shot running quickly, even at the finest grind size and 18gms of coffee?
Most likely the Beans are too old. Try to buy freshly roasted beans and always avoid buying in the stores since they never have a roast date and are old most of the time. There are plenty of videos about this topic if you are further interested.

@Ethan you should sell that book!

So, how much instant coffee you put in that thing?

Maybe not tampering hard enough? See if it changes anything
great video!

Ethan! When is Flur going to ship to the rest of the world? I needs it.

Nice job!
18 grams of coffee on what size aftermarket basket? 18g 20g 22g or 25 grams?
I love it kaffe
