I really liked the fact that there was easy access to battery and hard drive. You could have a spare battery with you on long trips and just change it when it was in sleep mode. I hate to be that guy regarding thermal paste application, but this time it's actually important.
    When applying new thermal paste to bare die CPUs like in a laptop or on a GPU, make sure that every square millimetre of the die is covered, otherwise any part of the die left exposed will be killed from thermal runaway, and the rest of the chip will shortly follow it into the grave.
    If you're unsure about how much to use, use something to spread it out evenly, and don't worry about bubbles, the pressure of the cooling solution will always push them out, and if the thermal paste isn't electrically conductive then err on the side of caution and use more than the recommended grain of rice/pea sized amount, the performance difference is negligible, and the potential of killing your hardware is too great to risk using too small an amount.
    Also avoid using Arctic Silver 5, it's electrically conductive, and the performance compared to modern, safer thermal pastes is much worse, go for MX-4 for a much better paste that doesn't break the bank.

    • @psivewri
      @psivewri  5 лет назад

      I was under the impression that the repeating the heat sink would spread the paste evenly. I should probably try the paste you recommended! Thanks for the advice 👌

    • @PaulTheFox1988
      @PaulTheFox1988 5 лет назад

      @@psivewri it will most likely spread it out all the way, but because the risk is so great, I think it's better to be extra cautious and make absolutely certain.
      I've seen people apply far too little on a bare die chip, especially on a GPU where its larger area makes it easier to get wrong, but it can still be an issue on a CPU.
      Many people will complain about spreading the paste, but in all the testing I've done its only shown about a 2C difference between the methods, and spreading the paste out until it's roughly 0.5mm thick is the safest method on a bare die to prevent damage from using too little.

    This MacBook Pro is very, very similar to the one my mother rescued from a high school trash bin. Mine's a mid 2009 13" MacBookPro5,5 that came with an Intel Core 2 Duo P7550 @ 2.26 GHz, 2 GB DDR3 RAM @ 1066 MHz, same GPU, 250 GB 5400 RPM HDD, same screen, and same Superdrive. I just checked its battery cycles, and it's only been through 197 with a battery capacity/health of about 71.6%. This thing was barely used, and it's still great for watching 720p RUclips videos, DVDs, and playing some older games like Half Life and Team Fortress Classic.
    I upgraded the RAM to 4 GB, swapped the HDD for a Patriot Blaze 240 GB SSD, and updated it to macOS 10.14.2 Mojave using DosDude1's patch. It runs beautifully and still looks very modern.

      @@psivewri By no means I'm a professional repair guy😀. But as someone who knows about electronics and myself have purchased some old used Macs for family and friends. I've taken them apart for cleaning and upgrade and this is what I follow. If you have access to an air compressor you can use the compressed air with pressure reduced to like 15-25 psi (higher than this you risk blowing some tiny components off) and blow the dust off or if you are unable to control the pressure hold the logic board like 50 cms away and blow the dust off(this is what I do). If not you can get a small compressed air can. Then I rinse the board in isopropyl alcohol or ethanol to wash away the dust and dirt. Next, I just give it a quick sweep with the hairdryer to dry off the alcohol.

    I found a MacBook Pro mid 2009 which someone had chucked out. I took it home, started it up and found that it didn't have an OS on it. The HDD was also an old slow spindle 240GB disk. I put a 240GB SSD in it and installed El Cap on it (As it was the latest the laptop supported), and it ran perfectly fine.
    I then wanted to try out an experiment on it... I used a patcher from Dosdude and installed Catalina on it... With its Core 2 Duo and _HUGE_ amounts of RAM (2GB), the laptop absolutely flew and proves that even after 11 years... It is still an absolute beast
    *Oh and btw, I'm typing on it rn :)* (The keys are really really good)

    I got my 2010 13” MacBook Pro for 21€ from eBay. Seems like no one bid on it! It came without charger, but with the original installation discs and instruction. I plugged in my own charger et voila: it worked! But: the battery was extremely bulged to the point where the trackpad had come out of the housing and the bottom cover was severely deformed. I screwed the Trackpad back in place, carefully hammered the back cover back into shape, invested 30€ into a new battery and here we go: 50€ 13” 2010 MacBook Pro!
    Sorry for my bad English, I’m from Germany!
    Maybe it’s worth mentioning that broken Apple stuff usually is extremely expensive here.

    So I have a mid 2011 Macbook Pro 8,1 with an Intel Core i5, 2.3GHz processor 4GB of RAM still running OS X 10.6.8 and I am thinking of doing very similar upgrades to reach current/ near current MacOS and much improved processing speeds mostly in order to edit GoPro videos and photos among not too much else. Would you be willing to guide me through with any recommendations regarding RAM/Hard Drive/etc upgrades?
