When wiping the internal drive, change the view setting to show the actual drive, those 3 drives are apfs containers, not the actual root drive if you want to change that, you can also just go into disk utility and merge the other apfs containers into the drive you chose for mac os big sur

I have no idea how in the midst of Apple's brutal anti-repair anti-consumerism, they have the USB ports being fully replaceable and it's cheap, too. You did great here, man. Awesome repair and it's essentially like new---I'd argue better, it's proven to work and be inspected for basic electrical faults and problems. My gaming laptop had its charger burn out at the wall plug, but thankfully all it took with it was the surge protector, my laptop itself was safe. It's scary what a bad or failing wire can do.
That's an awesome quick fix! I know you listed the specs of the MacBook in the video description, but another way to view them is via Apple Menu > About this Mac and it'll show all that you need to know, with the option of clicking "System Report" to get more granular/detailed specs on a per component level. Great video though! It was cool hearing your daughter happy!

I don't fix electoronics as a hobby but the other month I was browsing eBay and saw this exact model for £120, seller said the only fault was a broken screen. Sure enough when the laptop arrived the only problem was a broken screen, so I purchased a tool kit and a screen for £185 and it works in great condition. Got a 2020 MacBook Air for round about £300!
Vince, I have a macbook pro 2017 A1707 board you can have for spares? It had the usual charging issue, sent it to someone who couldn't repair it and blew a few components all over the place. It's yours for spares if you want it, only thing I ask is postage to be covered. I replaced the board in the end and it was cheaper than the repair

Take that USB C lead and cut it into pieces with scissors or side cutters - there's no reason to keep anything that may contribute to issues in the future simple because you've forgotten. At the very least label the cable's issue...
Great fix by MMV!!!!!! You are tenacious , and have lots of patience. One of the reasons I have recently stayed away from apple pc and laptops is when they are expensive and when they fail ,unlike other pc / laptops , they are usually not repairable by me

I buy macbooks and imacs in bulk from a big-name university in the Midwest. I was inspired by your videos. So now I do laptops used cars and work as a chef in the day life is good.
What a nice, satisfying fix :-) I'm wondering if those problems could have been caused by an aftermarket magnetic connector. It did seem like there was some sort of corrosion around the area, but apart from that this is pretty much what I expect a bad magnetic connector would cause. I have never seen this myself but I have read about it.
I think the cable end got damaged first, or some tiny piece of metallic debris in the slot, it knackered one of the USB ports, manifested as intermittent charging, so they tried it another port which then also got damaged. What else would damage the same pins in both ports? Great fix, well done.
Good video. As always! Thanks for that. I was watching on my smartphone in the morning and asked myself whether you put the power meter in the wrong way around and couldn't read value due to this. But then on the bigger screen I see: The current is showing up correct. I have a power meter of the same build. This one will only measure voltage when going this direction. Current is only shown when plugged the other way around (which is the more complicated way, due to the plug types being strangely selected for that...). Learned something new today (much variety even if things appear to be the same). :) The joy of your daugther was the best thing you could ever get out of a repair. :)

You can boot into single user mode and reset the initial setup flag through command line if you ever run into one that wont let you into recovery without an admin password. Reboot to create a new admin acct and then boot into recovery to wipe it clean. Ive done a few of those at work
in disk utility there is a button on the top left corner on the left of the title Disk Utility, click it to Show all devices, and then you can delete the whole disk into a single partition, hope this helps for the future, keep up the good work vince😀😀
Nice one, Vince! When you first showed the usb-c ports I could see they didn't look right. I could see blackness in some of the sections. This video shows, you need to assess each and every part, as you would do when tracing a fault. Again, nice work, Vince!
Hi Vince here’s a suggestion for a trying to fix video: LED light fittings. You know the ones that come in all kinds of designs that say the LEDs are irreplaceable? I’ve been looking for one to go in my living room but I’d love to know if they really are a giant waste of materials when an LED strip inside the light fails or if when the driver fails if that’s replaceable as well? Just something I thought of no worries mate thanks,
I seen those in my local B&Q (DIY store) and I thought the same thing. They look lovely with the integrated lights but what happens when they fail. Maybe if they are sealed then they will last the advertised hours...not sure though!! I will have a scroll through eBay to see if any are for sale. Cheers for the idea 👍

I found a video of a guy building his own fume extractor using two plastic boxes and some other cheap items, thought that I will do that as well. In terms of fixes I don't think I will start with macbook's though, but rather something small, cheap and easy. I am very rusty 😅 Thanks for all the great and honest content!

On disk utility, you need to click on the pull down menu and select "show all devices" and click on the top ssd and than erase it

goes to show with some know how that you can find some deals on the internet. but definately think you got super lucky with this one Vince. as so easily could have been another nightmare one that you never get to the bottom of without many hours of investigation, and even then a 20-30 percent chance of getting it working.. great video, and repair.
