  • Here we have a 17" Apple MacBook A1297 that I purchased faulty from eBay quite a while ago. It has a very common fault. Let's see if it can work once again.
    Merch is here!!!!! www.puddlt.com...

    If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.

    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Another great fix Vince. Yes, we do still get people bringing these machines in for repair, and yes, it was an absolute goldmine initially when the fault was originally discovered ( I believe it was Louis Rossmann or one of his techs who stumbled on it by "accident" ).
    There's a similar situation developing with A1990 / A2141 type machines where the design of the case is causing SSD VREG caps to get corroded and short, however, sadly, in 80% of the cases it's discovered too late and people are losing all their data when the corrosion causes the VREG to push a little more than 2V5 on to the storage NANDs, however, if caught early enough, it's a 1 (or 2) cap quick replacement and out of the shop it goes again, complete with a protective blob of neutral silicone or even hotglue to protect from further damage.
    If anyone reading this does have the 16" Macbooks, please please PLEASE backup your data NOW because your data will be most likely lost by the time the machine stops working from this corrosion issue.

      Thank you Paul, this for me was a very satisfying fix, obviously helped by the videos from your good self, Graham and Louis. Thanks for the info on the A1990 and A2141, hopefully this will help me and others in the future. Hope your head has fully healed 👍👍👍👍

    Vince when you wanted to fit a bigger cap, the way to expand the pads there was to scrape away the solder mask a bit. Also, if you use a jumper to reposition a cap, you have to make sure it's a very thick one otherwise it defeats the purpose. Overall another great video, keep them coming!

    • @89ludeawakening1
      @89ludeawakening1 2 года назад +2

      He really didn't need to extend the pad at all. He could've just tinned the pads and new capacitor, and then used flux and heat to attach it.

    Vince invest in a pencil style soldering iron (USB Charge Version) that has a thin end as this could help you in tight areas.aIn high ground areas; back it up with the hot air gun at the same time.

    I have two 17" Core i7 MacBooks. One late 2011 and one early 2012. One I essentially got for free buy selling off another MacBook that I fixed and the other I got for $50NZD both faulty that I fixed. Initially I fixed them by heating the GPU but this never lasted very long then I came across Louis Rossman and dosdude. I used a combination of dosdude nvram GPU disabler and then using opencore to further disable the GPU as well as running the latest version of MacOS. Haven't had any issues and the MacBooks have lasted over a year without issues where as before I would need to heat gun the GPU once every 3 months if in constant use. Anyway. Good job.

    29:10 What you do there really is a bad habit. One shouldn't be touching the contacts of the system memmory because of the possibility of electostatic discharge. A RAM module on it's own is supposedly especially sensible to that and they might not simply end up clearly broken, but damage can also just result in an instable system.
    Obviously you'll also leave skin grease behind, which surely won't be advantagious for the contacts either.

    I e-mailed the address in your profile but the person who replied said “you must have me mistaken for someone else”!
    You’re still up for looking at my Game Boy Color, aren’t you?

    Vince - if you know the owner's name, surely you can track him down directly? I agree, it would be great to give it back with all the photos - so many people DON'T back their stuff up, so there's a good chance the owner doesn't have them himself. Please update us if you find him. Cheers.
