@@Сайтамен The dialogue. The story. It's boring compared to the original trilogy. The characters are flat with little personality, and the story is riddled with plot holes. It all just feels like a cash grab.
Do you mean ironic? Either way I agree. Star Wars 1, 2 and 3 were pretty much special effects movies. Sit someone down who hasn't see 4, 5 or 6 and get them to watch the prequel trilogy. I guarantee they'll have no idea whats going on.
Ironic is a much better word...maybe unfortunate is a good one too. And your totally right about getting someone to watch the films that don't have a "background" from the originals. I know this because a friend of mine that knows basically nothing about Star Wars watched Episode 1 with me I spent nearly the entire movie explaining everything. Wouldn't have had to do that with the originals.
That's because the characters in the original trilogy are much more developed and you can actually connect with them. In the prequels you have to be outright told who you're supposed to like and who the villains are.
This is the reason why I will always like the Prequels. Despite the fact they have a lot of great special effects ( which help to tell the story and also allowed George to do everything he wanted to create a fantastic universe) , they still have an amazing story! In my opinion Lucas always stayed true to his vision. He told his story, not one the delusional fans wanted.
@bengilhooly3616 Your missing Darthfires valid point. GL wrote the prequels for himself first & if the fans liked them then that was a bonus. But Star Wars IP was created by & belonged to him until he dubiously sold it to Disney to spite the petty fans who hated his prequels...
He ceased to be george lucas the storyteller and became george lucas the guy who "fixes" up his own creations when there was nothing wrong to begin with and relies on useless special effects in future films being made. When that happened the good man that was the storyteller was destroyed.
He went from being an underdog filmmaker who loved 40's film serials to a grumpy, tired owner of a movie company who clearly had lost his sense of adventure and energy, resorting to shooting movies almost entirely on greenscreen sets where he could control everything and make sterilized toy commercials.
I can understand some of the fixes, like removing the shimmering shadows under the land speeder in New Hope or the transparent cockpit in the snow speeder in Empire.
In a way it is. But I agree I think the complaint of the prequels "just being CGI" is unfair and untrue, still he deserves criticism for his bad writing in the prequels but not for an "overuse" of CGI
What people don't get is that this doesn't contradict what he did with the prequels. He used special effects as a tool to tell the story, but instead of appreciating the good story the prequels had, idiots whine about the special effects. He says in the beginning that spending too much time and effort on the effects and environments is a mistake, because the story is what really matters, and then in the prequels he used lots of CGI to save time and effort, because the effects are not the important thing, the story is. People who say this video is ironic in light of the prequels don't understand what he's saying here.
@Anakin Skywalker Oh look, you gave up on that comment just like how you gave up on the Prequels when you saw just *1* thing that you disagreed with. Original purists are so narrowminded and blind.
Exactly. Someone gets it. I always had a theory that the reason those fanboys hated the Prequels was because it was something different and new that they weren't used to. It wasn't the same exact thing like the Original Trilogy. And that could explain to why those same people praised The Force Awakens came out. It was something familiar. A soft reboot. Their nostalgia for the Original Trilogy blinded them from accepting something different and new.
I can't believe people are unironically defending the prequals. Most of the people who complain about the CGI aren't whining or idiots. That is simply a straw man used by fanboys who defend those shitty movies. The overuse of the CGI made the films feel completely lifeless, the characters felt just as lifeless, and the story was a complete mess, filled to the brim with potholes. The prequals were lazy, soulless cash grabs, simply made to sell merchandise.
He wanted to shoot Return of the Jedi digitally and do the effects on a computer. It wasn't possible in 1983. The originals were a work of what was possible with the technology of the day, and a compromise. He wasn't able to do what he wanted on the originals until Episodes II and III.
I'm not a fan of the prequels but I honestly don't see what this has to do with it because George, whether you like the story or not, was very focused on the story of the prequels

Prequels were never good, all Disney did was show another bad way the movies could've went.
It was ruined well before Disney got hold of it. Lucas killed the patient with the PT, whilst Disney just dug the grave and filled it in again.
You said it brother. Wait you said that?!
You either die the hero or live, long enough too see yourself become the villian
villain of the corporate, yes, you're correct, redditor
I wonder how modern-day Lucas would react to this video.
So many Star Wars quotes are fitting right in here! Best comment section yet!
.....ok
What Lucas did with The Prequels was change the way the effects get made.He didn’t overuse nothing.Obviously he had a bigger budget with The Prequels but he still followed the same rule. The Prequels haters are just to stupid and ignorant to understand.
Nope. They are not too stupid and ignorant to understand. They _completely_ understand how shit the Prequals are. The overuse in the CGI made the films feel completely lifeless. Putting a bunch of shit on the screen did not make the films look impressive. I'm not against CGI, but George definitely went overboard with it.
Nah bro they were pretty shit that sand dialogue is undefendable there's no effect that fixes that shit.
@@CarlMarxPunk Anakin said indirectly: "I see, you had a great childhood on this paradise, but mine was entirely different, my background is nothing like yours. It was harsh, unpleasant and unforgiving. Even such normal thing as sand reflected that. (Sh*t, how do I say it without being grumbly?)"
@@Debater-ef1lt The fun thing about the "all was CGI"-complaint is that it's simply wrong. The only two scenes where everything in the background was CG are the droid factory and the talk - scene between Mace, Yoda and Obi-Wan in Episode II, and those only because they weren't in the original Script and added very late. in 90% of all other scenes, most of the buildings, scenery, landscapes, Backgrounds and Sets are Sets, Real-World locations, models or miniatures. The arena of Geonosis in the background ? Model
The Hangar where Obi-Wan and Anakin fought Dooku ? Gigantic Set
Most outside- and inside shots of Kamino ? Model
All Landscape-shots of Mustafar aswell as the Mining-complex are taken on a model, the Lava is just real footage of Lava from Mt Etna, and all inside shots, aswell as the plattforms Anakin and Obi-Wan fight on are sets.
The Mountains in the background on Aldeeran are the alps, filmed in switzerland, Theed and Naboo are all models, or real places in Italy. The underwater-landscapes in EpI are models, and remember the scene in EpIII where a bunch of wookies storm towards droids Landing on their beach ? The Wookies were real people in costumes, and the beach a model. The filmed the wookies in Front of a bluescreen, then put the model-landscape behind them. The exact same way they did it back in the OT. Both Obi-Wans and Anakin Jedi-Starfighters from the Beginning of Episode III were live-sized mock-ups, aswell as a additional Cockpit-only Set for scenes from inside.
Basically every detailed background or building we saw in close - up from the outside was either a Set or a model, from Utapau to even extremely minor sceneries like Cato-Neimodia.
EPIII alone had vastly more models and sets built for it than the entirety of the OT COMBINED. Wether people want to accept it or not, it's very possible that Ep III relied LESS on CG than TFA
@@Сайтамен Nope. Too much CG.
It's so ironic how the biggest rebel in Hollywood sold to the biggest studio in the world
GigaChad Lucas
I'll bet that Lucas is a huge admirer of Andor.
People saying George is a bad writer isn't accurate. He is a good writer, he just lost touch with what being a good writer means
so hes a bad writer then.
He didn't lose his touch.
He can make a good story, but needs a punch help in the dialogue
Oh young Lucas... I miss you...
Funny how most fans did a 180º turn on the prequels, most now love them.
@ .46 seconds : c3po with ‘2’ gold legs … (not a silver one)
wait YOU said that?
RESPECT TO YOU................................................MR. LUCAS !!!
I don’t give a crap if people still say the prequels were crap. You can hate episode 1 and 2 as much as you want but if you hate revenge of the sith, then there’s gonna be problems
Nope. Revenge of the Sith was just as shitty, boring and poorly written.
@@Debater-ef1lt Why?
@@Сайтамен Ask George Lucas.
@@Debater-ef1lt What is poorly written about it, with explanation, go ahead.
@@Сайтамен The dialogue. The story. It's boring compared to the original trilogy. The characters are flat with little personality, and the story is riddled with plot holes. It all just feels like a cash grab.
This segment has always stuck with me since I saw back in the early 90s. It's too bad it didn't stick with him as well. :/
The new Halo series brought me here. Every sentence describes exactly how I feel.
He was on the right track there in his youth... amazing of how being to close to ur own creations can screw things up.
01:08 If that's not hypocritical, I don't know what is.
This was when he actually cared about creating an amazing story....
Ironic
i can't wait for the special edition of this interview with cgi aliens and hayden christensen
kek
This is the reason why I will always like the Prequels. Despite the fact they have a lot of great special effects ( which help to tell the story and also allowed George to do everything he wanted to create a fantastic universe) , they still have an amazing story! In my opinion Lucas always stayed true to his vision. He told his story, not one the delusional fans wanted.
The story was shit man wtf
@@cheloxmv why?
And that's exactly why the fans hated them
@bengilhooly3616 Your missing Darthfires valid point. GL wrote the prequels for himself first & if the fans liked them then that was a bonus. But Star Wars IP was created by & belonged to him until he dubiously sold it to Disney to spite the petty fans who hated his prequels...
Lol. The prequels tell a very poor story
R.I.P. Young George Lucas
Crushing irony.
His turn to the dark side in hindsight was infinitely more tragic than Anakin’s.
He never turned though.
It still amazes me that people always use this quote as a example of irony
In a way it is. But I agree I think the complaint of the prequels "just being CGI" is unfair and untrue, still he deserves criticism for his bad writing in the prequels but not for an "overuse" of CGI
It ABSOLUTELY is.
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Wrong franchise you hack fraud.
Which he didn't.
I guess George fell to the dark side.
@Anakin Skywalker Try, try again. You're exactly proving the OP's point.
Yeah if anything what about the Sequel Trilogy? These movies are practically Special effects with no story at all!

How? How is it ironic?

I love seeing prequel defenders squirm to defend George when shit like this is in the annals of history.
I'm not a fan of the prequels but I honestly don't see what this has to do with it because George, whether you like the story or not, was very focused on the story of the prequels
@@faterock9876543 I know, right? At first I was a bit confused by this, but when I thought about it for some time I became even more confused. Why do people use this as an argument against George?
