Buy a Dewalt or similar battery powered caulking gun!!!! They got single and dual cartridge ones. Awesome videos you two, thanks for making them! Love the making of the Cat and can't wait for the sailing adventures begin too.
Your always positive outlook and energy is something I certainly admire and appreciate greatly. LOL, I'm sure many folks may have pushed the surrender button by now but you both are so realistic about the buildtime and are dedicated to seeing her through. Can't wait to see her completed, I know thats a bit off into the future but its going to be incredible. Keep buildin ....... 😊

In biology, there is a saying, “use it or loose it.” I caution all of my patients against long term use of supplemental melatonin because it will weaken your own pineal gland’s production. In my opinion, melatonin should only be used for brief periods like a few days to overcome jet lag,
I tried melatonin once and was surprised at how I felt the next morning: quite depressed. I'm usually painfully chirpy and cheerful in the morning even after a sleepless night, so my brain definitely didn't like the melatonin.
We use 6061 at the shop, the corrosive advantage and cost is substantial. The amount of work performed in this episode was uncanny, working around tools that don't work and rolling out the interior really made me think of the days when our sprayer went on the fix and we painted by hand. Looks awesome, the extra time fairing was so obvious.
16:47 use a notched spreader to get a uniform coverage. I do flooring and spread glue all the time and it tweaks my gears every time I watch some boat channel trying to evenly spread glue with a flat trowel
I had the same problem when I stupidly bought the “new and improved” caulking adhesive from the chandlery instead of the 3M stuff I’d always used. I got halfway through laying a bead along the entire length of the boat when the gun froze up. I desperately tried to get it all off before it dried and barely succeeded. Later on, I went back and cut the tube open; the “new and improved” stuff had already partially cured before I’d even opened it.
Go team MJ Sailing! I am building a composite airplane from plans and there are many parallels in the building processes. You guys make a great team. My project is in a somewhat similar state. Mostly structurally complete but lots of systems and controls left to complete. Keep at it! It is going to be beautiful and a major accomplishment! Take care. Thanks for the great content, I know it is a lot of effort to produce!
Wow, MJ Sailing, you really faced some challenges during this catamaran build! But just like sailors out on the water, you overcame every obstacle that came your way and still managed to accomplish so much. It's amazing to see your determination and perseverance. Wishing you a belated happy new year, and may you continue to sail with fair winds and good fortune. Keep up the excellent work! 😊
Thank you so much!!! Although progress has been slow lately, we hadn't had any failures in awhile. And as soon as we did, it brought back memories of the aluminum boat build where things NEVER seemed to go right on the first try, haha. Happy New Year!
I used to use a lot of 2 park guns and the same thing. I learnt if you are struggling to pump it out stop and check the cartridge. Don't know how many guns I broke I'm a slow learner.
Happy New Year guys as a retired aircraft engineer any time we used to make repair section on the aircraft aluminium structure, we always treated the bare plate with Alocrom 1200 solution and it would apply a irdescent golden, protective chromate coating to protect the metal and you would paint on top a primer and a top coat.
When we were fibreglassing our forebeam into our cat, we would put epoxy on the forebeam (after cleaning it) and then sand it with the epoxy on meaning there was far less oxidation-- the bond lasted extremely well. Phil
6061 aluminum is great stuff. I used it extensively in my airplane build and it hasn’t disappointed; a great mix of strength, lightweight, workability and corrosion resistance. I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that backing plate.
Happy New Year!! Yes, we're so happy to have that done with now, especially after waiting so long to work on it. Now we'll be able to bond the seat back of the settee and do more work to the bridge deck. 😃
Nice progress beautiful people. I feel for you working in the cold. My pool temperature in sunny Darwin Australia today was 33.9 degrees celsius!. It’s pretty damn warm up here this time of the year.
Yesterday was an 'admin' because it was a full afternoon of freezing rain. 😬 But before we know it, July will be here and we'll be curing the heat as we're pouring sweat, haha.
Happy New Year!! We're so excited for the changes to come this year as well! Might even be able to get her out of the tent and into the work yard this summer!
Not sure about that isolation between your s/s bolts and the plate, try sticking a multi meter on the bolt and the plate and see what your ohm's are, I bet your still connected.
This is off topic and i dont know if you have talked about it but air conditioning is extremly important to get the humidity and heat under control espeacially in the tropics or you will not be happy campers . Run piping for ducts now.
If you are siting on the bench in that corner will you be able to feel the mast vibrate from the wind? That could be cool.. you might know how the ship is sailing just by that vibration.
It all eventually worked out! 😃 (What really made me happy is while I was rolling on paint, Matt managed to get the first gun working again. So at least it will be ready for the next round!)
I’ve been following MJ Sailing for a long time and have always enjoyed your content. Matt’s description of what he’s doing and why is very helpful with understanding what’s being done and why. Jessica’s voiceovers are absolutely wonderful (and it doesn’t hurt that she’s gorgeous). I live not far from you in Salisbury, MD😮
If that 2nd epoxy mixing gun hadn't worked, there's always the Dewalt DCE591B to save Matt's wrist. Plus, another tool for the black and yellow collection!
What a bummer about the adhesive. That’s horrible. Even worse to get bad product. Great on reassurance with the explanation of the type of aluminum used on the compression post. I’d like to see your Max last a hundred years. Happy New Year, be safe and fair winds! 😊
We're really hoping she'll stand the test of time!! We want to make sure we do everything absolutely correct - part of the reason for the length of time for this build, haha.
1. An electrically driven adhesive gun exists from several manufacturers. Wouldn't have helped you with the solid adhesive but makes applying a breeze. 2. Propane adds a lot of humidity when heating up an area, but you are probably aware of that. 3. It's called aluminium, because that's it's name 😄
Maybe next winter, but because a diesel heater will put a film in the air and onto our surfaces, it will affect our bonds at the moment. So, better to play it safe and continue to use propane for this season.
January 2024 ... Are ye on schedule with your original time scale? I know where my schedule would be if I was running your project and it wouldn't be anywhere near where you guys are .... Stay Safe & Fair Winds!! ☘
No, they originally planned to be fully completed and on the water by now. I remember something about estimated completion around a year and a half, but they were adding a few extra months for how much time it takes to film these videos. That was two years ago right around now.
Read through all the comments and clearly no one is as childish as me, so here goes: "It works better when both sides are pushing." Yeah, she said it. ;) ;) WRT the compression post, I am trying to find the link, but there was another RUclips catamaran sailor (maybe Parlay?) that recently replaced his aluminum compression post after finding a good part of it had corroded. I still would have taken the time to coat it with something to seal it (maybe after it gets a layer of oxidation?) that would not affect the bonding. As someone else mentions here, metal expands with heat, so I hope you allowed for that in all 3 dimensions, because both sides push.
I wish you had been more deliberate in showing us what material you used to bond the backing plate in place. I believe that Jess said it was some form of cyanoacrylate. I'll be needing something like that to glue in a bulkhead on my boat when I built the galley.
Was there really a need to use methacrylate adhesive on the compression post? I would have used 5200 which is pretty much fool proof and provides tremendous bonding characteristics. Keep in mind that there is no pulling force on the plate material, strictly compression and sheer.
We could have used a lot of adhesives with this large of a surface area, but the engineering and certification were done with an MMA in mind. We follow the plans on important parts like this. MMA lap shear is over 2000psi and 5200 is around 350.... But again, this is a huge bonding surface so probably unimportant here
Nobody that doesn't want to help us has to. But in the case of our friend Greg, I can tell you it will bring a smile to his face to watch the videos and see how much use that heater is getting and know that his contribution helped us get many projects done. We're not expecting that people buy us things - but for some that get real enjoyment from watching this build, sending sandpaper or mixing sticks or gloves - brings them joy and helps them feel even more involved in the build.
I've yet to see any production builder use aluminum fasteners in a high load area. The aluminum bolts available are typically less corrosion resistant than the base plates.
@@MJSailing okay perfect, that should put us in the same anchorage in the Bahamas sometime in the 2026 after we bring our girl north! Keep up the good work 👍
@01:31 "...the bolts are just there as a kind of a backup..." Right, but don't forget, also as an anti-squeak measure!👴😁 @02:02 Did you hear about the real cause of the fire that wrecked a 45 and a 50 foot Leopard cat? (happened some 3 years ago)👴😳😨
Why didn’t you drill and line up your holes before you added your adhesive you use the bolts to draw the adhesive together for it to dry just a suggestion also cut the tip of your gun back a inch it will come out much easier you spread it around anyways it will save your hand and arm muscles good job all around just remember I know it’s hard to not get side tracked trying to make everything perfect
If it were only the sounds of work, I would go lighter on the music. But this time of year, the only background noise is the blast of our propane heater....which seems even less pleasant. 😬
Hope you got a refund on the first tube. I'll bet they wouldn't cover the cost of the gun. Looks like you're using a 1 to 1 mix, If you're going to use a lot more, I can check into an air driven gun. They're easy to work with and batch consistency is better with the even flow through the static head mixer. Let me know if you think it will help.
Thankfully they did replace that tube, it was just a bummer to have to put this project on hold. Normally we're not working with the tubes of methacrylate, just the large batches, so I'm not sure if an air gun would be necessary for how infrequently it's used. 😉
Please explain something to me - thruout the videos both of you tell us about the technology behind what you are doing, how the compression post is assembled, how glues work, why all the sanding is done etc and then Jessica tell's us about this product that helps you sleep better. Are we supposed to believe that you have done the same amount of research on this Beam product as you have done on the other parts of the Catamaran? Or are you just blindly repeating what the sponsor has told you to say.
I'm glad you asked that, because not only do we not promote products that we don't believe in (there are a number of offers I have turned down), but yes, I did do my research on Beam before filming this promotion. Not only did I spend an afternoon researching the ingredients, but I read hundreds of reviews (positive and negative), and talked to other people I knew who have used it. Plus, is did a two week test on it myself so I could have a good idea of what the effects were. You can ask Matt, he'd get annoyed that I'd stop our Netflix show half way through each night to make some, lol. And I stand by my review. As stated, I have no problem falling asleep at night. But on my first night of this I slept so soundly that I didn't toss or turn once. Woke up in the morning still sleeping on my back, even though I usually roll on my side. I hope this helps!

We used a Methacrylate from a company called Wiredforsigns. It's an inexpensive MMA compared to the Scigrip brand we use for the hull
