In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to music from Metallica. The Outlaw Torn is from their album Load, and I think this is the first time I'm hearing any of their music from that album. The performance I'm hearing is from S&M1, performed with the San Francisco Orchestra. I hope you enjoy!

This performance elevated the song to a completely different level. Same with Bleeding Me.
Yes! They both are amazing on S&M
I'm the opposite. The symphony shrouds all the guitars and it sounds like a mess at times. You can barely hear James jamming at the end of the song which is a shame because it's the best part of the song
@@AndyTheRoo That's fair. The guys are a bit overshadowed but the fullness of the orchestra, for me, makes it better.
@@AndyTheRoo yep. shoe horning in Orchaestral melodies that have nothing to do with anything going, bar being in the same key, is NOT making a song better. Its laughable . He should have done the album version, ALL its impact is lost in this forgettable mediocre live performance.
2 of my favorites, and the orchestra brings it.
RIP Michael Kamen. This concert was his idea and is his legacy in the metal music.
The Outlaw Torn is one of the hidden gems of Metallica (pure thrashers don't give a f about it, but their loss). From Load album, I like "Until it Sleeps", "King Nothing", "Bleeding Me", "Mama Said", "Hero of the Day" and "Ain't My b1tch", apart for The Outlaw Torn.
Oh yeah, Load and Reload are gems on their own! I always liked King Nothing.
"Pure" thrashers don't know what they're missing. Metallica showed such a depth of musicianship in Load/Reload.
If you take the best songs from Load + Reload and condense them into one album, you're talking about one of the best rock albums of all time. There are so many good songs that people overlook on those albums.
@@cowsaysmoo51 Mmmm....That got me thinking, wish songs would I choose for that condensed album... 15 songs:
1) Fuel, 2) Memory Remains, 3) Ain't My Bitch, 4) Until it Sleeps, 5) The Unforgiven II, 6) King Nothing, 7) Hero of the Day, 8) Bleeding Me, 9) Devil's Dance, 10) Mama Said, 11) Thorn Within, 12) Wasting my Hate, 13) Attitude, 14) Fixxxer, 15) Outlaw torn.
Bonus Tracks 16) Better Than You, 17) The House Jack Built, 18) Low Man's Lyric. In a Limited Edition lol.
@@LuisRdzG10 I think that's a very solid selection. Fixxxer and Outlaw Torn are must-haves
S&M is probably one of the best live records ever. Does not get a bit old.
12:19 Jason rocking out with the orchestra's double bassist. Love it! Miss that dude in Metallica.
seriously, Metallica's not the same without him
@@koosa6289feel the same..
Bless his heart, he kicked ass for almost 15 years😂 😂😂
same...
@@koosa6289 Yes...just not quite the same eh
As a depressed teenager with no ability to communicate my feelings this was one of my favorite songs to blast to drown out the world and also feel like my feelings could somehow come out. Even if the lyrics didn't exactly line up with my circumstances this felt like and exorcism of sorts of my inner demons. Thanks Metallica!
Haha I’m 38 and I still feel that way when I listen to outlaw torn.
No leaf clover should be the next Metallica Monday reaction. Along with -Human, they were both written for the collection collaboration with the SF symphony orchestra
He already did No Leaf Clover :)
it seemes to me it was S&M II version @@thiagoaaaaaaaaa
I'm so glad you're doing the first S&M. This version is miles better than the 2019 version.
Jasoooooooooooooooooon! I love Rob till death and all that, but Jason is a monster on the bass here as well as the vocals.
You like Hetfields meowing during the 90s?
@@Dimchek970 I for one sure do!
I love this song so much, it’s a prime example of why Metallica is such an amazing band (to me) and gives me goosebumps every single time: This build, this intensity, these incredible lyrics. Pure class.
Same
James' lyrics are incredible.
To bad they are trash on the latest albums.
@@vikusen1857I was thinking more in general. I hope we will give him much more cred for his lyrics further on.
@@ChuckUpchuck true, but you think lyrics is better after justice? Lyrics went from epic to trash.
With the perfect vocals to match.
One of kirks best solos. Just fits perfect.
Always felt it was like a scream into the void. Love it.
Damn right. Best emotional solo ever done by Kirk, this screaming note is just something else, it never forgets to hit me right in the feels
Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me are by far the best tracks on the Load album
Those are top 10 Metallica songs to me. Any album.
@@pigskinpoetry Agreed, uninhibited masterpieces
Lyrically and musically amazing for sure
They might be the best Metallica has ever done
All of the first S&M Concert is worthy of your insights. "The Call of Ktulu", "Bleeding Me" and "Until It Sleeps" would be right up your alley...as would "No Leaf Clover"
Check his other videos, he did No Leaf Clover about a year ago :)
Load Is such underrated work. So intense, so full of emotions. They have been so hated for slowing down songs and leaving thrash behind but they were simply trying to do something new and they did in a Great way. Load Is a masterpiece.
As someone who started with the cello at age 10 and then graduated to guitar and heavy metal, I have always loved this combo of symphony and Metallica. Underrated song, too.
Have you seen the double-bass (I know, it's not quite a cello!) solo from S&M2? It's bloody brilliant, highly recommend if you haven't!
I think its their best S+M performance. Also, best vocals. Thanks for making me appreciate it even more.
The intro into “Call of Ktulu” into “Master of Puppets” at the beginning of this concert is sensational. Worth checking out.
Have to appreciate their 'usual' "Ecstasy of Gold" at the open of the concert too.
@@gregbrown3764 yeah that’s what I was referring to
James has experienced loss in his life and the fact that we still have Metallica is close to a miracle. It has been touch and go there a couple of times and the boys have all the money in the world. Financially they don't need to do this, but mentally they do... It is their burden and savior in one breath... Their beast and their outlet. There is so much poured into these songs that you can't help but feel it... Feel it.
Well said...
Felt indeed.
yes. more metallica please. maybe from their new album where they also post live performances on their own youtube channel? i'm curious what you'd think of the new stuff
Inamorata would be a good one! Very long though.
I plan to get to some of their new stuff. Thanks!
@@Doug.Helvering nice. already love you for that.
@@Doug.HelveringI think you'd really enjoy Innamorata.
@@AlexP1235it's 1:20 longer actually
This is the best version of the song and one of my top five Metallica songs. When Kirk hits the solo three seconds in or stop and the wha opens up, it sounds like a scream of anguish and longing. It’s one of my favorite Kirk moments. So powerful. Thanks for covering it.
5:32 "It's kinda 'bluesy'."
Yes, yes it is.
Both albums, Load and Reload, have got Kirk's touch literally throughout.
They got a lot of hate for the albums when they first came out, and gasp, cut their hair.
But both albums are musically excellent.
I mean, the common denominator for every band member ever was a little English band called Black Sabbath.
"For whom the bell tolls" and "Devils dance" with the orchestra are other Metallica songs that deserves a Doug reaction!!! 🤟🎹
This song is one of my favorites and this version is unbelievable. James's vocals are so on point.
Michael Kamen is super incredible, beyond words....its so refreshing to hear you say what you have, you are cool my friend...its all music and this still gives me goosebumps every time...
If you get a chance, check out the studio version called outlaw torn (unincumbered version) it was released on the memory remains uk single, with the additional 1:30 that they had to cut from the CD. It's amazing, and is one of my all time favorite Metallica songs!
This live performance is far and away my favorite live recording ever. As another commenter said, this performance took Outlaw to completely different level. I love the production and the orchestration, they both serve the original composition so well and bolster the emotional weight of this song.
I think your analysis of James’ lyrics is spot on but also very interesting. It was his inability to move on and heal from Cliff that ultimately forced Jason out. In my opinion, as talented as Cliff was, Jason WAS NOT just Metallica’s bassist but he was their heart and soul.
The first S&M has probably my favorite vocals from James ever. It has a perfect balance of the old school anger mixed with all the technique he learned in the early and mid 90s. Sounds incredible. Bleeding Me is another standout from this live.
¡Yeah! Bleeding me it's awesome version too
love this siong so much, the lyrics of the chorus are so powerful
I love the bit at 12:19 with Jason rocking out with the double bassist. Great review, it's cool to see someone else excited about one my favourite albums! I think the volume was too low on this one though, I had my headphones at 100% and I was struggling to hear the basslines.
Load is my favourite Metallica album. I've come to accept this now. Outlaw and Bleeding are unbelievable.
Been that way for me since 96, welcome to the club.
I'm the same now. I always used to say MoP was was fave and its still probably the greatest metal album of all time. But now in my (cough) old age i find I like Load better than all their albums. It is brilliant from start to finish.
This album and specially this track hitted me in a whole different level during my teenage years. It's by far my favorite Metallica song.
I don't know the first thing about music theory, harmonics, what key they are in, or half steps. But from my understanding, Mr. Kamen WROTE the music scores for EVERY instrument in the orchestra himself. When I listen to this concert, and how magical it sounds, I can't wrap my head around what Mr. Kamen did. Seems superhuman to me.
There's a story.
He wrote the orchestrations while listening to the album versions of the songs. He then had to transpose some of them a half step down to match the guitar tuning. When rehearsing "The Call of Ktulu", one instrument, just one (I forget which one it was) was playing the old sheet music; he heard it, and called it out. Gifted beyond imagination.
The chromatic climb and the double-time feel at the end of this song is a perfect example of brilliant simplicity. Coupled with the context that the rest of the song gives it, gradually building toward this perfect climax. Breathtaking, and all puns tastefully intended.
You should definitely do the entire concert! That would be amazing!
Load is highly underrated. People wanted Black Album 2, what we got was 4 guys growing as people and musicians.
This arrangement by Michael Kamen is as close to perfection as can be. While some songs on S&M (like Wherever I May Roam) only get a touch more interesting - Outlaw Torn and Bleeding Me were turned from mostly middling songs to masterpieces!
This whole show is probably one of the best concerts ever recorded for a metal band.
James's lyrics are the CORE of their music in my opinion. So strong!
The symphony was epic in this album, much better then the new s&m2
Song is about cliff
"Make me smash the the clock and feel, I'd rather die behind the wheel"
After the bus accident, James smashed his alarm clock in the hotel room and threw it out the window and he wished he'd died in the bus crash instead of cliff
Concerning the quote that Doug read about the lyrics of the song (from Jaymz) at 14:35 , it makes sence. It can left open to losing anybody to death but your theory fits right in. James also referenced the death of his mom and dad in other songs on Load. Sh*t gets quite real on Load now that I think about it.
I loved 'Outlaw' and 'Bleeding'
The orchestration made them both into perfect songs. Outlaw especially. 🫶
Doug you MUST MUST MUST DO THE STUDIO VERSION.!!! In my opinion, it is a top 3 most epic rock songs EEVVEERRRRR!
"Hero of the Day" and "Bleeding Me" are two other OUTSTANDING tracks from Load.
Excited for this one....one of my Metallica's favourites.
I always felt “bleeding me” was a bit more special. Both are great.
One of my all time favs. Thank you sir!
This whole album has songs about personal issues. and James's family. Check "Until it Sleeps" and specially I would like to know opinions about the lyrics of "Bleeding Me". I always thought there is more to that song.
To me (and there are many) but a lot of Metallica's success over other metal bands is having clean vocals... and beyond... James is amazing. Check out some stuff from this summer. They've never sounded better
Great rection and elaboration. Especially loved that you joined the band on a keyboard and was wanting to do more of that
I hope Bleeding Me from this gig has been mentioned. The best song, in my opinion, they played that night.
Bleeding me is one of the best metallica songs and you should give a listen !!!
OMG. My favorite Metallica song. Shortly before they performed this in 2019 at the S&M2 concerts, they played it in Germany. It was so incredible, very emotional. James's solo at the end always sends an arrow straight through my heart. The video for the 2019 performance ends with James looking over to Kirk and Rob and they look right back at him, an incredible moment of connection between them all.
I am really happy to see you listen and enjoy this song, I also suggested it to you probably last year. Load and Reload are two great albums that deserve to be checked out
Considering Jason's later statements on why he left the band - about how the other members (James esp) never made him feel like he fit in, that they never quite let him belong as the "replacement" for Cliff - this is an especially interesting take on this song and its meaning.
I was in high school when Load came out. I was disappointed the first week cause they cut their hair and all that "meant." I was a dumbass. Load is tied for my favorite Metallica album at this point. The more I hear it, the more the music hits. Emotionally, it's hard to beat.
Bleeding Me is another great listen from Load and S&M
Doug it was so beautiful what you played on the keyboard ❤ it really suits the song perfectly
I think this might be my favorite arrangement on the S&M album, where the orchestra elevates the original tune. Band and orchestra totally in sync, and the vocals here are perfection.
Speaking of amazing lyrics by James, have we done Bleeding Me yet? Especially the live S&M version from back in the late 90’s
I used to listen to this song to death in its original album version. These long, epic songs from Load/ReLoad are some of the best of MEtallica. Bleeding Me, The Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer - they beling in a museum.
FiXXXer is INCREDIBLE
This is my all time favorite song, this version for me is just beautiful. So dynamic and hits so many rhythms.
Yes, Eb. That's their main live tuning.
Would love to see you react to this whole concert, a match made in heaven..
Really enjoy your videos keep up the metal Mondays!
I actually love the 90s albums. Outlaw torn is a great track.
The whole S&M concert is just amazing.... really love it :)
So happy to see this one! I love this song so much, and I love this version specifically even more. RIP Michael Kamen! This is my favorite solo from James and there are so many beautiful moments in this song. My favorites are Jason Newstead headbanging with the bass players in the symphony during the last solo, and James modulating his volume manually on his guitar to get that haunting tone. Wonderful!
I like that you analyse the songs technically but then also give words of wisdom relevant to the lyrics. Very therapeutic to many
in 1991, Kamen did the "elevator version" of Nothing Else Matters. Kamen suggested that the band should play a concert with the symphony.
"Michael, Metallica called. They'll do that concert you were talking about"
Michael "That was 10 years ago"
You gotta check out Eric Clapton's performance of Layla from Royal Albert Hall 1991 with an orchestra, it was also led by Michael Kamen. Probably one of the best versions of Layla out there.
Another good one to check out from those concerts is "Edge of Darkness" which was a theme for a BBC TV show of the same name, with music written by Kamen and Clapton.
It is indeed about Cliff. James has dodged answering whether it is or not directly, but the "smash the clock" line is the dead giveaway. The night Cliff died, James ripped a clock off his hotel room wall and threw it through the window.
When I was about 14/15 I had a big TV on my bedroom wall, directly over my guitar amp. I bought the DVD of this S&M concert, and I learnt it all. I would just play along pretending to be in the band. This was always one of my favourites to play because that end is just so smooth. My parents got seriously bored of hearing two hours of Metallica like twice a week lol
One of my all-time performances of a Metallica song that I really like...and you decide to cover this on a Metal Monday!!! Thanks
Was fortunate to see Maestro Kamen play keyboards on Roger Waters first solo tour, The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. His team recreated all of Rick's synth sounds perfectly. Ever Fliyd song sounded EXACTLY like the album, due in large part to MK.
This was the only tour Rig did this. On every subsequent your, the songs were retooled by The Bleeding Hearts Band. Growing over the years into new and unique pieces that fit the current performers.
I was very bummed to not be able to attend this show. When I heard that he'd written arrangements and new material with James, I was more than excited.
The performance was expertly recorded, the band and orchestra working together and not fighting. Due in large part to the brilliant arrangements.
You can even hear Jason!
My favorite part of this video is when they cut to Jason and he's "locked in" with the guy on the string bass, just jamming.
🤘🧙♂️🤘
Rich the Ancient Metal Beast
This song relates to me so hard. I'm actually crying right now
Always loved the S&M tour.. its the one where my mum walked past my room as i was watching the DVD , poked her head in to say "oh, that sounds interesting??" Grooving with the band at the end is one of my favorite parts of this song 🎸🤘🎶
this is one of my favorite songs of all time, you react to a lot of great shit. a lot of my favorite deep tracks taht i've seen few people ever react to
James’s voice has evolved so much over the years it’s really amazing.
I love that at the ending of this song Newsted is just there jamming with the whole bass section!!!
The song is shortened, BUT they did release the full unedited version as a B Side to The Memory Remains on a CD single
So glad you’re watching the first one, because I believe the first S&M is the best
It took me a long time to appreciate this particular tune. I think it took this particular version. It's now one of the songs I wish I'll get to hear live from Metallica.
I knew you'd make this one special, Doc. You're the guy to navigate all this orchestral stuff. If you ever do a movie review, please make it "Amadeus". I'll be first in line.
This is my 2nd favorite Metallica song behind Fade to Black. One of their most underrated songs off their most underrated album in my opinion. This is one of about a dozen songs between S&M and S&M2 that I think the orchestra really adds depth to.
Jason.... What a beast here in this whole show
I’m so glad that a reviewer of an S&M song finally acknowledged Michael Kamen. No way this album (nor S&M 2) are as well received if not for Kamen’s compositions. And this is only a fraction of the contribution that he made to rock and metal. Seriously, Google the guy. The list of bands and artists that he worked with is a who’s who of rock and roll.
Never realised how great this version actually is! Great commentary, subscribed!
You need to react to the whole concert! You’ll love it
It just amazes me that you knew the tuning was e flat, love your vids. Just a guy that I likes jamming and it makes me want to learn more. I always use my ears, and I want to get back into reading too.
If you like this one. You have to listen to Inamorata on Metallicas latest album. Now their longest song ever recorded. Just Epic.
When S&M came out and I listened to it for the first time I though "hummm, the orchestra is slow, behind the band". Then I gave it a second turn, and a third, and... well, my favorite song ever in its best version is there (One).
About this one in particular, the orchestra sets the ambient and the band just breaks through. I liked the original, but this is just on a level of its own.
Too bad Michael Kamen didn't live to make the second one... and a third one at least, as there are songs that I would love to hear with an orchestra (ehem, Unforgiven trilogy anyone?).
I wonder when you will get to hear another Prog masterpiece written for and played with an orchestra - Pain of Salvation's "BE". You will certainly enjoy so many things about it: the concept is about divinity and creation and how humans scorn it, the song titles are in Latin to avoid linguistic preconceptions, the live show itself is very theatrical with Daniel Gildenlow changing outfits and even instruments. Specifically the most popular is the finale - "Iter Impius & Marius Nauticus II", where you have the villainous Mr. Money coming out of cryo sleep to find the world around him destroyed, and then the deep space probe seeding a new world (possibly becoming a sort of God?).
Best performance of the song ever...just perfect and wayyyyy better than S&M2...
Miss Jason
Your fill after the first chorus was classy as hell!
I loved this whole performance ❤ Thank you for reacting to this wonderful piece 😊
You should definitely check the live version from Germany August 25 2019 on youtube, it’s the best version of that song! James is in it that’s crazy! Also I get the same vibe from the last song of their new album 72 seasons: Inamorata, check that song too!
Jason’s fingers all I hear! ❤ such a performance
This song is so powerfull with the orchestra! This live is just fantastic ! Rip mister Kamen 🙏👏👏👏👏
I remember the first time I heard this song. I asked for a Metallica CD for my 16th birthday and of course my Mom found the one with a symphony. I thought it was so lame and I was bummed until I started it on my Sony walkman. I was a passenger on a drive to Mt. Shasta CA from San Francisco. I listened to both CDs on repeat the whole time.
The beginning of the song was a power chord consisting of Eb and Bbb (or D# and A), something about the distortion of the guitar kinda masks that diminished fifth, which is probably why you were unsure of the key.
man, you really need to check out Ne Obliviscaris - "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" or their more recent song "Equus", both are seriously master classes in composition for heavy/extreme metal music. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Hey Doug, I thought of you when I came across a video of Pakistani musicians playing Brubeck’s “Take Five” on sitar and traditional instruments. It was the Sachal Studios Orchestra, check it out very cool!
The whole song is amazing but when it breaks out into the solo the sky opens up. Incredible.
