I remember watching Ray Billings' robot "Tombstone" in a mismatch, where after just a few seconds of combat his opponent's robot was crippled, weaponless, could barely move, but nonetheless came at Tombstone again. Ray gave him a light hit to bounce him away, then called over something like "John - stay down, please, stay down." so he wouldn't have to do any more destruction. That moment changed my opinion of Mr. Billings.
But also ray billings always ask if they want more. Remeber the gigabyte fight? That was pure mercy as he could've end there whole career effortlessly but didn't because the team said they had enough
IIRC, what Ray said was "Stop moving, John!" And John stopped moving, and the ref started counting him down. This was right after a hit from Tombstone sent Gigabyte's shell to one side of the arena and the rest of its mostly still intact body to the other. One of my favorite BattleBots moments.
No they mean Riptide, it's been mentioned on the show a few times this year including by Chris and Kenny themselves that one of the Mad Catter team thinks Riptide is just a 250lb knockoff of a machine he built called Lynx who's a champion in one of the smaller weight categories outside of battlebots.
From what I understand, Team Riptide is genuinely disliked in the pits. What they do for the camera isn't an act. They are every bit the arrogant trash talkers behind the scenes, including Ethan's dad.
Not surprising to hear the dad is like that, considering he believes autism is a "disease" that could be cured and sells snake oil "cures" for it, which he even used to try "curing" his son
I vaguely recall yeti from a couple of years back that went really far into the competition but struggled to maintain their bot due to I think lack of parts, but because they were an extremely nice team others who were no longer competing were helping them in the pits. Yeah that ain't happening for riptide
@@sweetrocks610 How many Bolts have they won? Ethan's a young guy, if he wants to _really_ enjoy his next 10+ years in the biz, he should try to be more humble. Riptide isn't the best bot, and it's not even the best vertical spinner, imo. He can be cocky when he wins the tournament. And then Whiplash, Sawblaze, or ten other potential robots will kick him out of the competition again and he'll be back to square one.
@@JaySay who said he wanted to enjoy it? Also nobody claimed they were the best bot. As for acting cocky, you can act cocky when you can back it up. That’s what Hydra’s whole bit is, and people love it.

Man I feel so bad for him, but obviously Captain Shrederator was set for retirement and is likely not competing next year so at least that's a silver lining for him.
@@marshmelows You say that as a fan who just likes looking at bots break. That is, of course, the main appeal. But when you're the one paying for and building these things, you'd feel much differently.
There was a comment made on Reddit by the captain of Captain Shrederator where he says that afterwards in the pits, the father of Riptide's captain came over and, rather than apologize, made a bunch of excuses as to why Ethan kept hitting a clearly knocked-out bot. From the comment: "The excuses were how Ethan took it too far, but it was his (Stan’s) fault because as he said “I told Ethan if he was going too far I would put my hand on his shoulder and he would KNOW to calm down.” Uhh.. dude what? Why not verbally tell your kid to relax. After he said that, my uncle said “you know your team and son have a reputation and if you continue to take responsibility for his actions he will never grow out of it” to which Stan replied “no I’m not aware of this reputation.” So, no real apology, no Ethan taking responsibility for clear poor sportsmanship, but excuses from Daddy because he can’t get a handle on his son." Keep in mind, this is the same father who apparently claims to have "cured" his son's autism and now sells this "autism cure". We've also seen Ethan taunting and putting his hand directly in front of Martin Mason's mouth in their post-match interview a few weeks ago so this is a clearly established pattern of poor sportsmanship that doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. UPDATE: Now they were just plainly caught cheating by working on their bot after they weighed-in, "somehow" losing 2 pounds in the process. Just absolutely indefensible.
Also something happened with the team their rookie season with Valkyrie and Leanne Cushing that really upset the team and her. Not sure what it was as there was a Reddit post about it that was quickly deleted after some negative fans got involved in the comments. But they are clearly becoming or probably are already the most hated team in the field at least from the pits. And Mad Catter team already didn't have much respect for them seeing how it's clear as day that Riptide instead of coming up with their own original idea just decided hey lets look at the smaller weight classes saw Linx a bot built by Calvin the driver of Mad Catter and saw that it was the most dominate 3LB bot in American if not the entire world. And just copied that design 100%. Only difference by the color scheme.
This fight is what will probably lead to some huge demand for a tap-out button for next season. Way too much, hate to see how CS will be repaired after that evisceration! 😬
@@TowerSavant And it doesnt mean that teams are willing/prepared to throw away 10k worth of parts every fight. People forget that most of these teams are there because they enjoy being there, take away that enjoyment factor or the sense of mutual respect and people will just stop turning up.
@@Rygoat I understand the poor sportsmanship but if a team isn’t prepared to have their bot eviscerated then that’s on them. I kinda like how we have an antagonist of battlebots now.
Build a combat robot which has a fast spinning kinetic energy weapon for use to fight against other similar robots in a tv show named BattleBots but then complaining about the other bot doing heavy damage after loosing the battle 😅 I can understand that they cost a lot money and work, but they are build to destroy or being destroyed. I would prefer the rule that u can attack as long as time runs or the referee stops the fight. I want to see robots doing damage with there heavy weapon to other robots. And if it’s your robot who gets destroyed in a fight it probably wasn’t good enough against the other bot. Build a new upgraded bot and try to be the one who is destroying in the next match 🤷🏾♂️
Great. Call people liars. That's great. Captain Shred was smothering around while it was shaking, and the rules say that ANY movement is enough to avoid a countout, do they not?
@@olimara1647 Not to mention Captain Shred can't self right when flipped. Which it what Ethan the driver in the pre match interview said the goal was to flip Captain and win the fight in the first few seconds by doing that. Which they basically do just that within 20 seconds flipping Captain over. Yet then landed another like 5 or 6 hits to them past that point.
@@BigFatWedge The rules specifically state an exception that full body spinners that "Cannot noticeably change it's position" in 7.6.2 Responsiveness Procedures. And if you're going to state that they were changing position, that probably had something to do with being hit in the face repeatedly.
Here's a thought. Instead of having random people in black and white striped shirts that can count to 10, get people that are actually involved in the sport to ref and give them the power to stop a fight instantly like in ALL other combat sports.
they have demonstrated the power to stop a fight without a countdown as seen in a tombstone fight a few years ago, but there was no way in a million years they would ever do that in this fight. The robot was still spinning
I have a feeling team riptide has made themselves a lot of enemies and will get they come ups one day. it may not be in the box but in the pits that we will never see.
Nothing like unsportsmanlike conduct outside the arena to pay back conduct that was perfectly legal inside the arena. Riptide doesn't look like they'll need anyone's charity any time soon.
"Hey ref, he was punching really hard, isnt that against the rules?" People are here to see destruction between two deadly robots. This isnt womans basketball.
This might just be a producer bait rumor, especially after what Nick Nave said regarding Shrederator's redesign "for the first time in 20 years" currently going on, and Brian saying no such thing apparently. They'll be back.
You know what was a great fight? Monsoon vs Whiplash. You know, that fight you choose as the main event because you knew it was full of quality, rather than because it was great outrage-fuelled engagement-bait, and which absolutely lived up to that billing by going the distance and creating a very difficult decision for the judges? That one. That's your actual 'fight of the week'. That's the kinda thing you promote. What you've got here is your 'controversy of the week'.
@@Dysphoros Your the kind of person who likes to cry a lot, it’s what’s know as being a snowflake. If you don’t like it just watch something else, it’s that simple.

Battlebots I beg you, please dont bring them back next season unless a serious attitude change occurs, we want the best robots and more importantly the best teams in the world, and whilst riptide is a great robot, the team seem to be souring not just the teams but now the audience as well. Going in for unnecessary damage after the fight is already won is not sportsman like, it increases the repair bill and only gives an advantage to them in the world championship bracket. Also Monsoon vs Whiplash was fight of the week, not this show of unsportsman-like conduct and squash match
First of this isn’t a sport, second off they are made to be put in that box and put on a show to make money. The riptide team does a fantastic job of putting on a show and doing damage which get views and make money. Nobody wants to see short fights where someone gets hit once and gets counted out. That’s boring. Also, CS should just dump the full body spinner idea they never work.
@@bobbydrillboid you're probably just a casual viewer, so you probably don't know there's multiple competitions and championships happening across the world, UK, US, China, Brazil, Holland, Australia erltc. that host multiple different weight classes, with battlebots being the one everyone wants to reach and get to. It's as much a sport as MMA, Boxing or Racing is. Second I can't argue that team riptide is making Battlebots a bit of money on viewership, cause people will want to continue watching to see them get beaten. But the amount Battlebots will make is pennies compared to the amount of damage Shredderator took. They lost over $10,000 worth of components, machining, and materials. by the end of the fight it was completely written off. Nowadays teams bring multiple chassis and spares cause the SPORT has gotten increasingly expensive the more eyes are on it and the more people want to compete, that and tech moves fast. But if this was even as far back as 2018. Most teams never really brought a second robot with them, so if riptide did that to Shredderator in 2018, Shredderator would be completely done for the rest of the tournament.
@@The_Seaborg it’s isn’t a sport, it’s a hobby, and again it’s just money and a hunk of metal. They take this risk of losing it all by participating. When the ref has to take the controller out of your hand because you refuse to disengage, I think it's a pretty clear indicator that you are going too far.
That's not what happened. The ref took the remote after he disengaged. Yeah it's bad sportsmanship but it wasn't illegal and their ref should have started counting them out sooner. That's actually what a ref is a for.
Where exactly does that happen in this video? The moment you see the ref take the controller is done after the fight, long after they disengaged. At 5:42 riptide gives the last hit, after which they disengage from attacking. In the wide shot you can still see both refs still standing at the shrederator side. Team Riptide went way too far, and they need to learn a thing or two about sportsmanship. But don't make up this fake narrative about a ref having to take away the controller from his hands because he refused to disengage. After the fights the teams are supposed to shut down the bot and put the controller down. This does not always happen in a timely manner and then the ref will grab your controller. This has happened in other fights this season before and is not exclusive to this fight.
@@RUINERx117 that was back when you could enter a bot that costs 500 bucks and a pack of bubble gum and have a chance. Now these bots can cost 10-20-30k and complete destruction all the time will cause many builders to quit

Yeah, it was way over the top. It crossed the line big time. This is an insanely expensive sport, and if you treat your competitors that way, soon you wont have any. Nobody can afford to completely replace every part of their bot after every match.
Apparently the footage is edited, captain protested after the fight was over, it was edited to seem like riptide kept hitting after being told to stop. Though admittedly I saw this in a comment, so the reliability cannot be guaranteed.
"Captain Shred was still moving therefore it is still a threat" Uhmmm Captain shred was flipped upside down and flopping like a fish... Shredderator's captain: "if we're spinning we're winning" They were spinning for all but maybe one of the hits...I don't understand the hate. It was a fun to watch match. Not a great match by any means but still fun.
Riptides primary weapon packs some serious damage (heaviest weapon this championship or something). But I'd like to see how they fare against an exceptionally fast bot that can get behind them like Claw viper
Well above riptides's puny drum spinner, there's Minotaur with their drum powered by a jet engine, tombstone with its massive blade, end game with its insane defense capabilities and tantrum with its impressive stats
Tombstone vs Gigabyte.. Ray Billings* showed some sportsmanship not to destroy a vulnerable bot without any protection and asking the other team to stop moving to get counted out . Riptide had all the time to think about this situation (beforehand) knowing well how overpowered they are against CS. Flipped CS is basically knocked out , everyone knows that.
It's almost impossible to "think about" things when you're fighting, and are in the moment. You need to do basically the first thing that comes into your head, and it's hard to get out of that mindset until the fight is officially over. Plus, did you not hear Ethan Kurtz afterwards? "He was still kinda moving, so I wondered if I should keep hitting him(or something like that)." If you think you need to keep fighting, there is NO time for think--you need to DO it.
Even though riptide is better than glitch physically. At least glitch has a better, sportsmanlike team. That’s why they are the true rookies if the year in my book
Glitch only got a lucky ran mostly due to opponentns just throwing themselves into their spinner. Now they've been figured out, and their lucky streak is over. Riptide deserved rookie of the year last year, and they're even better this year. As they showed when they one-shotted Glitch.
@@olisk-jy9rz I don’t think beating hydra if all boys comes down as luck. They beat a ton of good bots that have to throw themselves at its spinner. I mean look at the way the ripped rotator in half.

imho if you dont want you precious robot be put so shreds, perhaps don't take part in a robot match where you try to do that exact thing to your opponent?
I disagree, Shred had no business being in there. Their armor was bad, driving was bad (crashed and stopped the spin at the start), and strategy was bad. Getting hit is the point, until ref starts counting its all fair game.
Saw the posts on social media before seeing the video. Was not as bad as I anticipated. Kid will eat humble pie soon. I like the idea of tap out buttons, however this sport wouldn't get nearly as much viewership outside of the "inner nerds" if they just have everyone tap out to save money on repairs. To wrap up, the fight was fair and within the rules, the behavior before and after is where the un sportsman like behavior lies. *if* they had gone over and shook his hand and said hey sorry, but good fight. Glad I got to battle you. After the fight it would have been 1000x better.
They wanted to topple Captain Shredderator and they did it. All of the fight after that was unnecessary, they could've just let him lay on his back like a bug not able to self-right.
@@Kuba_Knew rules say bot needs to show some form of mobility, just spinning in place wouldn’t count. That’s why immobilized bots with functional weapons still get counted out.
Unfortunately this fight has lost Riptide a fan from me. Having fought in dozens of lighter weight class competitions, I have never had an opponent who was so disrespectful to continue dishing out that kind of damage after I was clearly disabled. I genuinely hope that another team has the opportunity to give them the same treatment and write off a robot after this. Completely unprofessional and uncalled for.

I'm certain that if money wasn't an issue people would be way more willing to quench your thirst for (robot) blood.
Doesn't really matter whether we RUclips viewers think he went too far, but it matters whether the other drivers think he did. Riptide just cost Cap's team a lot of money in unnecessary repairs, and that's just poor sportsmanship. A lot of the other teams might take that personally and decide dude needs to be taught a lesson. Because what goes around comes around. And I'm absolutely there for it. Dude is obnoxious both inside and outside the arena and I'm hoping Black Dragon knocks him out and keeps hitting him until the refs pry the controller of of his hands. But that's just me. I'm petty like that.
No, I feel this too. I honestly don't root for certain Bots for the team/captain's behavior and attitudes alone. Even if I also try to be on the mindset of "Don't hate the Bot, hate the person", because the Bot's just doing what it's controlled to do by the person; It can't work on its own. I don't care if it's a "weaker" Bot either; If it's got a horrible builder with an arrogant attitude, I won't root for them. I love teams like SubZero because they are humble. Maybe not the "strongest" but they are humble and even when they win, they don't flaunt it in your face and act like children (or heck, have some unneccesary entrance like Riptide did here, acting like tough guys and ripping off clothes). Speaking of which, I even want those poor innocent clothes avenged by BD. (I admit, people that do that on purpose frighten me...)
Remember also that bot building is a community, and you often see people helping each other out a lot behind the scenes - irrespective of their "personas". Ray Billings would often help a team with their bot for the match against his own, and help AGAIN after to make good the damages despite showing as a bad guy. Riptide's making sure to turn themselves into a pariah with behaviour like this, and even if someone doesn't turn their bot into a writeoff like they did here to Shred (which is quite likely, given they're fighting a Brazilian drum spinner next and odds are good they're willing to do unto them), they'd be certain to be unable to call on this kind of help.
"Another team might take this personally and decide he needs to be taught a lesson." Really? What other teams. Gosh, silly me, I thought we were civilized human beings here. Jeez. Some people are just getting out of hand.
Riptide did in fact stop hitting Shrederator as soon as Shrederator stopped spinning. Even at 5:28 Shrederator landed flat and was starting to spin up again while not upside down. As a fan, I know Shrederator was a huge underdog and the fight was basically over at 5:18, but you could argue the hit at 5:23 was generous because it gave Shrederator a chance to flip back over and continue fighting. But, again Riptide stopped hitting Shrederator as soon as it was clear that the active weapon stopped at 5:44. If teams want to tap out before that they should add a white flag or something and have the refs stop the fight. Mind you I am a big fan of Shrederator, but their slogan is "if we're spinning we're winning" and they were still actively spinning up until 5:39, albeit upside down. I understand their frustration with the cost of rebuilding, but I think the hate on Riptide is a bit too much. Not exactly rooting for them but they have a scary robot, probably among the top 5 bots to win the whole thing this year.
Finally, someone said it. I am all for sportsmanship and bots respecting the cost and time that goes into repairs, but are they supposed to allow their opponent to keep spinning and recover or come back at them?
Glad I saw this comment, thought I was the only one with common sense. You can argue that he could of backed off before the last hit but like you said they were still technically “moving” so it may not of been counted out for a while. It’s not like shrederator was actively getting counted out and riptide was continuously hitting it. If you don’t want your robot to be damaged then don’t enter into combat robotics or make a better robot.
CS does not have a self-righter. If they're upside down, they can't move. They'll be counted out. In the pre-fight interview, Riptide's plan was to put CS on it's back and that's what they did - but still attacked.
@@russellhltn1396 as soon as they powered down the hits stopped. so as long as they was actively spinning they took hits, who is to say they couldnt upright themselves and get back into the fight?
Nobody can tell me that Captain Shrederator was a threat to Riptide anymore after their hull was ripped open like a tuna can. In therms of sportsmanship this was much worse than the Huge vs Hydra fight a couple of years ago. Huge lost by lack of sportsmanship but at least had still a working bot left. Those teams and builders are a great community which shares the same passion about bot building and understand, how much effort, money and time it takes to build a working 220lbs battlebot. Destroying an incapacitated bot by no reason is an unspoken no-go. I think this fight is another example of the controversy with team Ripide. The rumors about their stolen design from team Madcatter, beating bots by dominant knock-outs and making fun of their opponents, or this lack of sportsmanship that happened against Captain Shrederator.
Was it moving? Then the fight isn't over! Just because you have taken their weapon system off doesn't mean the bell has rung. PLENTY of bots have lost their weapon and kept fighting, some even winning!
@K U plenty of other teams would've waited for shred to go back on its wheels or land on its roof to see if it was still operational not attack it as it was up on its side
I hope that if Riptide once gets damaged so badly it can't move, the other team remembers this fight and shows no mercy either. Karma will settle this sooner or later.
Used to happen on Robot Wars back in the day. Look at what happened to X-terminator in Series 7. Unnecessarily dismantled Bulldog Breed in the semi finals after it had died, so Typhoon 2 did the exact same thing to them in the following round...
Battlebots if you want to profit off of the fact that the wider audience likes to watch total destruction like this then pay your builders better so they can afford a $10k repair in 1 day. You're right that the non-fan audience will like this more than a better more technical fight and it will bait engagement from fans who know how much toxicity the Kurtz's have brought to the pits.
As a fan you are right. They should pay them better. But as a fan the destruction is better than a attacking and causing no/less damage. We want a fight and in a fight they should be beaten up.
@@jasteni9744 As a fight, it wasn't even good. Once Shrederator was upside down, Riptide had already won. Everything after that is no more interesting than watching a bot destroy a washing machine.

I could be supportive of the fact of being able to show more destruction and spectacle by continuing to hit them, onlu if they then followed through with sportsmanlike behaviour such as offering financial and physical assistance with rebuilding shrederator in good faith. It could have been a more acceptable and kinder ending to the story

Not conclusive whether Riptide should have stopped earlier, imho. Shrederator went on rotating. That was a choice. Shrederator sended two signals: please stop (verbally), and in the same time 'go on, I am still alive'.
I'm with you. If there's one thing we learned from the Hypershock/Gigabyte fight it's that just because a bot seems crippled doesn't mean they are. They honestly give me horrible high school flashbacks when I was surrounded by classmates with similar behavior (except they acted out when angry, and while they didn't rip their shirts off, they started a lot of fights with each other and/or knocked tables around). But in a more joking manner: Let's leave the scare tactics to Minotaur. ;) Because angry bull is ANGRY. Regarding the fight: I did still see Shred spinning so as long as you can move at all, according to the new rules, your opponent can still hit you and it's a fight to the death. Some people will show mercy, others won't, and some may take the "easy route" and others want to showcase their potentntial. Don't forget, during End Game vs Ripperoni, EG got stuck and Ripp could've won automatically, but they wanted to have a real fight and while it was a huge risk, they freed EG and did just that; Even that is showing some sportsmanship - even moreso when Ripp had the upset against EG BUT didn't act like arrogant buttheads about it. They didn't go on saying that "oh yeah, we're gonna just KO everyone out here, just like that" and have an obnoxious "victory speech". They were still humble, despite winning over one of the most powerful Bots in the tournament! I do feel bad about how much damage Shred took, and I hope they can make the Jackpot fight with the support of other teams. HOWEVER, the arrogance shown at the end and obnoxious yelling was just...Unecessary, to be frank. Again, it doesn't hurt to be humble. And I admit, Shred isn't the "best" Bot by a long shot, but at least the team doesn't act like crazy teenagers if/when they win. Even when they upset against Tombstone, they didn't act out like this. TLDR: Just a lot of unruly behavior out of the fight, and they can definitely celebrate! Just do it with some respect...Or y'know...Go to the bar later or something, idk. :P Also just gonna repeat that I didn't see the entrance as "cringe" as much as "terrifying" due to my direct fear of people who act like that. I didn't cringe, I freaking looked away and tensed up!!
What the f*ck are you talking about? Before the End Game win, RIPperoni lost to Gruff. Them saying that they would just go and beat everyone would have been ridiculous. And Riptide didn't give a "win speech," as you say, either. So either you weren't paying attention, or you're making a point that I don't understand
Oh, please. Most team entrances are over the top like that or even much worse. In fact they're often much cringier than this one. Hypershock and Skorpios teams in particular push the cringe levels to new heights. If you think this was weird, you have not been following very much.
Oh, about the joke, Yeah. That Bull is scary, and so is their bot. Number 1 seed contender. About what you think of the fight, yeah......I'm thinking its the right move from Riptide. Because of the new rules this season that is. I might say they have gone too far if it's any other season, but not this time. Shredderator's probably not gonna beat Jackpot. I'm sorry, but it's just maybe it needs a complete redesign. Overall, I agree with what you said. Unless that was the finals, then I'm all good with it.

But think of how good it's going to feel when we get to see his bot get scrapped cause after doing this everyone will be giving you the same treatment.
Making this the "Fight of the Week" is in such incredibly poor taste after Whiplash vs. Monsoon was very clearly the best fight this week. This is just a bad attempt to milk controversy for engagement. Was Riptide within the rules? Yes. Was it poor Sportsmanship? Also yes. Ethan Kurts very clearly knew Shrederator was dead. He said in the before fight interview that he knew the fight would be over if Shrederator was inverted. He got him inverted, and then went far beyond that. At 5:15 they launched and inverted Shrederator and immediately kept hitting them. They knew they were just piling it on at that point. Ray Billing showed us that Karma does come knocking if you take too many hits on already dead bots (Tombstone vs. Bronco). Ethan and Riptide should tread carefully, because at this point, if they get stuck on their side or on the rails or something, I doubt anyone is gonna give them a friendly push to resume the match.

Yes, they did is the short answer. The lack of sportsmanship and remorse was truly despicable in this fight. When you see the head ref take the controller of the driver, you know they've had enough. Also, I love how battlebots chooses controversy of a great fight, Aka the whiplash monsoon fight. I do genuinely feel sorry for the shrederator team as this has retired an entire shell and countless parts.
I think that's the point of making a bot though isn't it? You put a bot into the cage to see if it can destroy the other bot or survive ... Let's face it, shrederator is an out of date finished design that had many fights and accolades to go along with it, people wouldn't mind if this would have been a rookie bot built out of fiberglass or if it would have been a one hit OK complete obliteration.
@DeAtHaToMiC88 Well, yes, but also, I think you're missing what people are getting angry at here. The riptide team could have backed off when shrederator was quite clearly dead, but no, they keep engaging and cause needless damage, now I know there's a rule about keeping engaging but the riptide team knew what they were doing and that's just not needed especially on a bot that doesn't need 10,000 dollars worth of damage done to it.
This is BS. Shrederators weapon was still spinning up. You don’t stop until the enemies weapon does. They just didn’t know when they were beaten and then complained about the damage like babies.
@michaelhouse6606 Really, seriously?? I get that there's the engagement rule this season that plays into aggression points, but that does not excuse the fact that riptide caused needless damage to captain shrederator, and can't really call them 'Cry babies' when they're more grown up than ethan as he was like a hyperactive child, so much so the head ref had to take the controllers out of his hands, I'd be suprised if they even get into the tournament honestly, as production, the builders and the fans were not happy about this at filming.
@@jackboulter4901 similarly other robots have been criticised for not 'finishing the job', this year states any movement means that bots won't be canceled out... Because at the moment there's a lot of people who can't seem to understand if it's to be taken seriously or just a bit of fun for a laugh.
On one hand, you can say Riptide should have stopped once they had Sherdderator flipped over. They had no means of self-righting. It was over then. On the other hand, they DID stop when the count started and when the bot was wedged.
they should give them a surrender button, alot of unnecessary destruction like they say, but that's what people want to see and like you said, it's not over until the arbitrator said so, in martial art people don't hesitate a second to punch on an unconscious body until the arbitrator stop them. At least here, nobody got in an hospital.
They stopped attacking when trasherstor stopped spinning which is how it is supposed to be. If trasherstor stopped spinning earlier it would have suffered less damage because riptide wouldn't have continued attacking. That's generally how all fights go.
@@RuffStuff420So weapon active makes it fair game? That's like saying it's OK to continue beating someone after they hit the floor because they're still flailing while trying to defend themself.

@@scribejackhammar But it needs to withstand the heavy weapon to weapon collision and get rid of the riptide weapon, so that the other can torn things up.
The video would probably get more engagement (comments) if it’s a controversial fight, and that means more views because it’s more likely to get recommended. I would have liked to see the main event instead just like many others, but this video got a ton of comments from people putting in their opinion on Riptides behavior
I totally understand why the shederator team was upset. He could've stopped hitting him at 5:25 but he immediately ran in and kept going for another 20 seconds.
Yeah like he said, Captain Shredderator team was still obviously trying to spin up again, at least twice, and that counts as "any movement at all" and therefore can't be KOed
Its very clear to me that the people in the comment section either actually engage with battlebots and enjoy the sport, or have no idea that nobody makes money from the show. If your bot gets destroyed, you have to just make up 5-10k in two days and/or rebuild the entire bot from literal spares.
That's their choice. If you spend 5-10k on a bot, put it in a ring with another killer bot, and expect it to come out clean then you're very dillusional. Besides that, Captain Shredderator loses most of it's fights, maybe tread some new ground and improve your bot if you hate losing that much money.
Sad thing for the community, sure no “rules” were broken, but there are unwritten rules like in all sports. So much effort and $$ is put into these bots and I rather have the field open to more bots then just 6 vertical spinners
If your design is so flawed and outdated, then that effort and money is completely wasted. They were taught a lesson that they can now learn from if they wish. Can't really have any sympathy. They lost a destructive competition. They know their design isn't up to scratch, so either come back with something better. Or don't. Plenty of teams get destroyed and laugh it off, because they know they weren't up to the competition. Complaining about it is just pitiful behaviour.
I just hope what goes around comes around... I hope that riptide faces a bot that deals them as much unnecessary damage as they did to CS this time around. And i'll be lauging all the way. This just shows that Ethan has no sportsmanship, no restraint and it certainly won't give him any friends around the pits.
@@ProfessorHanger Umm, you sure Riptide won't give Black Dragon their first KO loss? Because I think Riptide will just power through Black Dragon and knock it out.
I get that Riptide's crew has a bad rep, and rightfully earned, but I'm not sure they are in the wrong here. Captain Shrederator was still spinning. This shows me that there should be an option to surrender during the fight. The BattleBots version of "throwing in the towel". The end result would have been the same, and there would have been a lot less damage to a legendary bot. I'm surprised that this isn't already an option, at least at the time.
It's called tapping out. It needs to be added to the rules, and reffs also need to be allowed to stop the fight, not just count down the knockouts. We need to take a couple of pages from UFC.
Yeah, that's what the fans want to see, people immediately throwing in the towel to keep their bots fresh if they're going up against dangerous competition. BattleBots (and the bot builders) need to focus on making an entertaining show. investing money into a bot and getting it torn up is the nature of the business and if you can't handle that, you need to stick to the lower weight classes.
@@user-on6uf6om7s You want this to change from hobby bot builders to no teams by requiring each team to build a bot to last 1 fight?... CS was a total loss on this match, they could not save a single part. $10,000 damage for one fight. You really expect teams to be able to cough up $10K for each fight? Also, CS is a relatively simple bot, some bots cost up to $35K, so you only want one or two teams to drop millions per season to have a few fights...
@@someguy4915 It's regrettable when that happens but if it's that or a bunch of fights where the bots are running away or tactical submissions to avoid difficult competition, then I think that's just the nature of the beast. If builders are encourage to duck competition out of self-preservation, no one benefits because people aren't going to watch the fights. Robot fighting is the modern form of gladiatorial combat, you can only expect to keep doing if it you can win or manage to keep your bot in decent enough shape to keep going. Most builders seem to have made peace with that, this is the only time I can recall someone protesting the fact that a competitor is continuing to fight while their bot is still operational and the countdown hasn't begun.
Unfortunately this kind of fight actually appeals to non-fans more than monsoon v whiplash would. Even minotaur vs cobalt isn't necessarily what non-fans want. Cobalt vs ghost raptor and hypershock vs rotator are what they want. I'm also not happy about the controversy but at least the RUclips team knows what they are doing trying to widen the audience.
@@TheHEAVYDAN it's a lot more enjoyable when the destruction is a bit more sportsmanlike as in hypershock v gigabyte or glitch v rotator or copperhead v triton. Or even a bot goading the opponent to hit again either as a hail mary for an unstick or just because they know they can afford it and want to put on a good show.
Okay, now you're just trying to stoke fires here. These are not the fights you should be encouraging. We want slugfests full of destruction that go right to the buzzer (or close enough), not some spoiled brat causing $10k of damage to a bot that's already dead after being told several times to stop. Incredibly poor sportsmanship on the part of Ethan and the Riptide team.
It's funny how the American Battle Bots has for the most part been more gentlemanly than Robot Wars. In Battle Bots as soon as your opponent is out, you are done as far as most teams play. In Robot Wars, getting disabled just sets you up for slow torture by the victor and house robots. It's more like a Gladiator match
I don't like Team Riptide. Great, impressive Bot, but I don't think I would easily befriend the teammembers. That said, Shrederator was still spinning during the hits. If there is anything Biteforce proved us, it is that you keep hitting your opponent until it is no more moving to win fights. Exactly what Riptide did. Clean fight to me, and not liking that controversy is pushed on us. I do feel sorry for team Shrederator.
Bite Force never did something like this iirc. Paul would land some hits and see if the opponent was still able to move, if not he would position Bite Force in a good position to continue so if the opponent did get back up he could continue to control the fight. You can see this in a lot of his fights
This is what they used to do on the UK version and it was great. If they'd stopped trying to spin and get away, then they probably would have been left alone. Whining because your robot was killed is daft on this show.
Honestly… team riptide isn’t making any friends. Total lack of sportsmanship. What goes around comes around. Hope whoever beats them leaves their machine with just as much damage
Rewarding this behavior is not good for the sport long term. Many of BB’s mainstay competitors hate Team Riptide, and there was never this level of conflict before them. Battlebots survived the loss of Bite Force and Tombstone, and I urge you to really consider if this one generic vertical spinner is worth the deterioration of camaraderie and community that comes with it.
Quite the opposite. When you compete you must accept potentially you are going to be destroyed. Having people throw blows then run away behind a white flag as soon as they get hurt would undermine the whole competition. You are in, or you are out. None of this half hearted “please don’t hurt me” nonsense.
@@mehashi Tapouts happen at every competition except BB. Note that I am NOT saying that BB should introduce tap outs, just giving context about the mentality of builders who aren't named Kurtz - they will allow their opponents to make de facto tapouts because that's the kind of community and camaraderie they have.
That's poor sportsmanship. Shrederator was obviously already done, yet Mr. Testosterone couldn't stop himself from pounding it to a pulp. In any properly regulated fight, it would have been stopped by a referee before the useless and wasteful carnage.
People calling out Riptide for hitting Shredderator over and over again, but in the past Shredderator has hit bots DURING the countdown against disabled bots.
@@DJLucas-xv7oe This was justified after Sharko. They changed the rules so that if there is any movement the fight goes on. Shrederator kept spinning up - so have at em. That said, no love for Riptide's team here though.
My thoughts: they went to far but it’s about entertainment and finding. A balance. There are so many fights especially this season where the winning bot backs off to wait for the count down and the fights are boring. Some of these weapons are getting so powerful they can with in under 20 seconds. How do you make an hour long tv show out of 6 fights that are 20 seconds long. You can’t.
This season has been all "if it is moving it is not dead yet" now we get "that was so unnecessary" while the robot is moving all over the place. Pick one 🤷♂️
I understand there will be some casual viewers who don't understand the full situation who'll respond to this but, Captain Shrederator was already done, it was upside down without a viable way of self righting. Riptide didn't need to go full boar. Now Shrederator has a slim chance of being at full fighting capacity when it faces Jackpot. A complete lack of sportsmanship from Riptide was shown here. The robot fighting community is built on sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, simple. Like it or not.
@@Fennecfanboy Wasn’t even slowing down, ref wasn’t counting, fights not over. Only thing that would be a problem would’ve been a late hit, but once they were sure it was done they stopped. Don’t want your stuff destroyed don’t enter a contest where that’s the literal point
Battlebots ratings in part rely on carnage. The show benefits from destroyers like Tombstone and Minotaur, who have been breaking bots to bits this badly for some time. Maybe the show could help builders finance expensive repairs since carnage is so good for ratings? And couldn't the ref have called the fight when it was obvious that Shredderator was knocked out? I think the person here who predicted there will be a tap-out button is ahead of the curve. That idea seems pretty credible.
I mean, if the producers of this show did help, then fine, destroy the bots as much as you want. The thing is that these people pay to build their bots out of their own pocket as well as relying on sponsors, but even then, it's not always going to be enough. On top of that, I don't think the producers are willing to pay that much, as each bot costs around $35,000 to $50,000 to make, and to accommodate 60+ teams would probably be worrisome for them, even if they were to cover like $5k-10k for each team. Finally, each team has to repair their bot on their own time before their next fight. I remember one team said they spent 8 hours repairing their bot before their next fight during the tournament, more or less. So each team has to at least try and not inconvenience the others too much. Also, from what I read, a tap-out button wouldn't get as many views as teams would just press it whenever they are losing before they get damaged too badly. And that just takes away the carnage along with the challenge that comes from the competition, making it unfun for the audience and team members.
@@som3bode577 You make good points. The inconvenience factor, the economics and the tap out button. Brian Nave put it well later on. He said that friends don't do that to each other, so maybe Riptide isn't a friend. Nor should it be compulsory for everyone to be friends. But if a team doesn't have friends in the pit, then they won't benefit from exchanging tips and getting assistance with parts. Maybe it would help if Elon helped to fund contestants? After all, robot fighting brings technology to the public eye in a positive way ...
I've never been so happy to see someone get beaten in a competition as when Riptide didn't make it to the finals. Those guys are absolute jerks for what they did to Captain Shrederator. That was as tacky and classless as it comes. That was totally disrespectful and I have no doubt they were talked to by the organizers letting them know that if they did that again then they would become so unpopular that they would not be invited to compete again. Just unsportsmanlike to the highest degree and I hope terrible things happen to them and their robot in future competitions.
😂 Its all part of the show and it was one of the reasons why I always favored riptide, He makes the show a whole lot more entertaining and worth watching than some goody-good sport that prioritizes "the friend we made along the way", ffs this is robot combat, not some daycare make-a-friend, sturdy up, not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Calm yourself down 😂
-- Well those two teams aren't friends anymore. That was total destruction, probably 9 to 11k worth of damage. Don't think I've ever seen that much destruction to a 'helpless' bot. Rip didn't break the rules. You need to make a statement and they did. But that statement could have taken their own bot out, and Shrederator has friends in the Pits. They just painted a target on their backs. Nobody is going to feel bad watching/doing the same thing to them now. Could have ended badly for Rip mechanically. Did for rapport. Shred is out at least 9 grand. I hope BB doesn't introduce Tapouts just because of this single fight. This is also what you get when you bring a bad, unreliable bot into the box. Shred is not a good bot design. Fun to watch. I wouldn't have gone that far out of respect for the other team and out of the need to conserve my bot/parts. THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN OUT OF THIS: New, restrictive rules.
I don’t think there should be rules put in place for something that shouldn’t be a problem to begin with, just the slightest ounce of respect for an already defeated opponent is all that’s needed. Shame some teams don’t have that though. Definitely don’t think a new rule is in order though
I mean, I enjoyed watching this AND I hope Riptide has a target on their back. I embrace the chaos when the chaos is watching robots chew each other to pieces. I ain't playing favorites.
@@blacktainfalcon7097 The problem with Riptide being the "antagonist", is that they don't even THINK they are the bad guys. Tombstone and Hydra knows what they are doing as the "villains" of this show, but everyone also knows that it's all in good fun. Riptide on the other hand thinks they have done no wrong and that's what makes them unlikable now. They didn't even apologize like with how the captain put his hand over Martin Mason's (captain of Mad Catter) mouth when the fight was over, nor did they give a true apology about causing unnecessary damage to Shrederator, they only said something along the lines of "oh, it was hard to see them flipped over but they kept spinning, so we didn't know".
@@som3bode577 remember last week when Hydra flipped a bot 20 times even as the countdown started? Where are all of you on that video?? At least Riptide stopped when the countdown started. This is my new favorite bot.
@@blacktainfalcon7097 First off, flipped 20 times was around the total amount of flips Hydra did against Free Shipping throughout the match. Hydra only flipped Free Shipping twice DURING the countdown for the knockout. Second, when you compare the damage, Free Shipping lost one of its wedges and couldn't drive (eventually). Meanwhile, Captain Shrederator was ripped apart, with the underbelly being bent and half of their shell was torn off. So yes, while Jake (Hydra's captain and driver) didn't HAVE to flip Free Shipping two more times, it's not like it was beyond repair in comparison to Shrederator. Speaking of the damage, here's why what Riptide did was unnecessary: Riptide's team said that the strategy was to flip over Shrederator and thus end the fight since Shrederator doesn't have the ability to self-right. The problem was that Captain Shrederator was flipped over after 30+ seconds into the fight, yet Riptide didn't back off, which kept flipping Shrederator back up-right. On top of that, those on CS pleaded for Riptide to back off once they were being hit against the wall and when their underbelly was bent. You could even see the ref near Riptide being angry with them after the buzzer and yanked their controller away. But those on Free Shipping didn't ask for Jake to stop during the fight or the countdown, and it's not like Free Shipping would be harder to repair in comparison. And the ref was cool with them as they didn't take themselves too far. I like Riptide too, but now I'm starting to not like the people operating it.
Ok, so for those who don't know, this footage is heavily edited. The part where the team protests happened at the end of the fight, not during. It was edited in to seem like they kept hitting after being asked to stop, but it's not what happened. Also as you can see Cpt. Shredderator kept spinning and bouncing around, basically signaling to keep the fight going. Only in the very last seconds of the fight footage it can be argued there was an unnecessary hit, but the damage had already been done at that point. It's funny because usually Shredderator always dies on the first or second impact. Like, dies dies, immobile. This is the only fight of them where they kept spinning even after taking heavy hits. Maybe they're not used to it, but they should have powered down.
Fully agree with your conclusions. And I expec5ed as much about the editing. It amazes me how 95% of the commenters can't see that Shredd is clearly still spinning and trying to turn over.

After he said that, my uncle said “you know your team and son have a reputation and if you continue to take responsibility for his actions he will never grow out of it” to which Stan replied “no I’m not aware of this reputation.” So, no real apology, no Ethan taking responsibility for clear poor sportsmanship, but excuses from Daddy because he can’t get a handle on his son."
Keep in mind, this is the same father who apparently claims to have "cured" his son's autism and now sells this "autism cure". We've also seen Ethan taunting and putting his hand directly in front of Martin Mason's mouth in their post-match interview a few weeks ago so this is a clearly established pattern of poor sportsmanship that doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.
UPDATE:
Now they were just plainly caught cheating by working on their bot after they weighed-in, "somehow" losing 2 pounds in the process.

Here's a thought. Instead of having random people in black and white striped shirts that can count to 10, get people that are actually involved in the sport to ref and give them the power to stop a fight instantly like in ALL other combat sports.
Only problem is that sometimes people seem like they have no movement but make a miraculous recovery before time is up

Battlebots I beg you, please dont bring them back next season unless a serious attitude change occurs, we want the best robots and more importantly the best teams in the world, and whilst riptide is a great robot, the team seem to be souring not just the teams but now the audience as well. First of this isn’t a sport, second off they are made to be put in that box and put on a show to make money.

Agreed. Give them Minotaur or Endgame. I want the left overs of Riptide leaving the arena in a bag

Not conclusive whether Riptide should have stopped earlier, imho. Shrederator went on rotating. That was a choice. Shrederator sended two signals: please stop (verbally), and in the same time 'go on, I am still alive'.
riptide acknowledged on camera that they knew shred couldn't self right. once they were upside down there was no reason to keep hitting them
I'm with you. If there's one thing we learned from the Hypershock/Gigabyte fight it's that just because a bot seems crippled doesn't mean they are. Riptide backed off as soon as Shrederator stopped rotating. Maybe some people see that as excessive but it just seems cautious to me. If there isn't a forfeit option, there should be one. The entrance *alone* was too far. :P I like how the announcers even commented on that with the same thing I thought: "REALLY?"
I admit, people doing stuff like that irk me - and I am afraid of people like that.
Also just gonna repeat that I didn't see the entrance as "cringe" as much as "terrifying" due to my direct fear of people who act like that.

Couldn't give us Whiplash v Monsoon instead? Don't give Riptide more screentime than they deserve.
That was a good fight too. I hope that also gets uploaded.

Its very clear to me that the people in the comment section either actually engage with battlebots and enjoy the sport, or have no idea that nobody makes money from the show. If your bot gets destroyed, you have to just make up 5-10k in two days and/or rebuild the entire bot from literal spares.

Though Team Riptide do seem like AHoles.
Add a "throw in the towel" button, to quit a fight to avoid further bot damage.
And make it optional of course for the opponent to listen. HAHAHA
Yeah, except they know when to stop

Yeah the tap out could induce rage quits or premature ends I guess. That's why there is the soft tap out of "my controller/bot isn't responding"
Shrederator needs a nice retirement a gracefully one not this bad. Riptide is a great bot but the team is too obnoxious and over the top .
Dude shut up, it’s a tv show, without teams like riptide who are willing to do some real damage and put on a show the game would become boring.
Riptide is straight up villainous
Losing support for sure after this
Nah he’s got my support. This sport needed an antagonist
How do you figure that Riptide "thinks they've done no wrong?" Ethan literally said he felt bad about it afterward.
If it weren't for the sake of preventing spoilers, that title would be an huge understatement
E-motional damage 😂🤣
In essence, discovery tried to make battlebots a drama
Fully agree with your conclusions. And I expec5ed as much about the editing. It amazes me how 95% of the commenters can't see that Shredd is clearly still spinning and trying to turn over.
To answer the title, yes, definitely.
I dont agree. Captain was still moving and when the countdown began, Riptide stop attacking. Its called Battlebots, not Mercybots! xD
@@AsheCrow they were flipped. They can’t move when flipped.
@@Oof_Robotics 7.6.2 Responsiveness Procedures. A Robot is considered Responsive if it can display some kind of noticeable translational or rotational movement on the Arena Floor.
So if they are not suitable for a countdown, shouldn't be suitable for mercy IMO. (I hope Im being able to explain my Point, English is not my first languague)
Agreed. Very messed up.
unpopular opinion - while I do feel for the shrederator team, this is a competitive sport just like any other and the spirit of competition inevitably invites situations like this...
so long as the bashing is kept to the arena I don't see a problem
This level of destruction is what I expect of every battle!!
For everyone out there against Riptide, these fights should be battle till the death and nothing less. This will drive innovation to do better. But instead you see different variations of the same high kinetic energy "robots". If the ultimate sacrifice was on the line for your "robot" then it would keep people from being lazy with their designs. No tears for the loser. Do better next time. What comes around goes around.
Whiplash vs monsoon was my third favorite fight of the season. This was an annoying beat down. Please post the real best fight of the week.
The fact that it wasn't even a fricking bonus just steams me.
NO! THEY DIDNT GO TO FAR! THIS IS ROBOT FIGHTING! I WANNA SEE SOME PARTS FLYING!! LETSSSS GOOOOO
Your new to this.
Yes. They did.
Worst Sportsmanship I’ve ever witnessed in Robot Combat - really a poor look for the sport.
100% agreed. Even if you don’t think the team did it on purpose (which is a whole other conversation), it’s needs to be understood that attacking an already dead bot against the builder’s consent is objectively wrong and goes against the spirit of the sport.
Not the worst. Witch Doctors team consistently shows poor sportsmanship with their whining and favoritism.
@@blackfox1320
Get out. Witch Doctor is one of the best team in the sport and there's no way that they're the "Golden child" of Battlebots or poor sportsmanship
So agreed
I think we found the new villain of BattleBots here
Even worse than Jake
He became the "Shredderaded" 😂😂
Boooooooo
Yes Riptide went too far. One of the values in BattleBots has always been sportsmanship
the robot was still moving its weapon. you gonna stop fighting someone whos still swinging their axe?
@@ThePurpleCheesecakeZebranot the same at all. For one, it said axe robot was not moving, then yes any other team would back off and wait for the countdown. Weapon activity doesn’t count as movement. As for full body spinners, just spinning internals doesn’t count as movement either, and neither does spinning your body and going nowhere. That’s not movement and they would’ve been counted out had riptide stayed away
