If it's implemented well, people will either notice and love it, or people will love the game but not think about why.
Even if someone didn't care much about technical mumbo jumbo back in 2004, I'm sure they still loved the physics that was so involved in the game.
haha funny ragdoll
for those worried that this project got abandoned, it didn't, Tyler McVicker (Valve News Network) said in a stream they're currently working on a Ravenholm demo/level
If Tyler McVicker said it, it's definitely true.

I might be wrong, but didn't he say that 18 months ago? I could've sworn I remember asking him something like that in one of his streams
Now I know it’s officially dead cuz Tyler

@@youdonegoofed it is, but man's a constant jinx machine, he had to give up on Half Life to Valve release HLA
Yoo this feels exactly like what Half-Life 3 would have been. Even the waiting time is so spot on.
Man, this game just feels so insanely high-production, and tight with presentation to be indie...maybe they have a secret big-budget sponsor?
Honestly , just looking at the production quality of update videos , websites , soundtrack makes me feel like i'm following an AAA development team , yet it's somewhat 20-30 half-life fans across the globe working together towards common goal of making their dream-game of beloved series.
No, it's actually more like 80-100, which probably explains why it is so high-budget looking. Even so, this is crazy good!
Valve
I'm pretty sure valve supports the development
Conspiracy theory: Valve knows that they can't release Half-Life 3 without people complaining.
They have Laidlaw release the story and many fan projects are born because of it. They either pick up the best looking one or already have a fake indie team working it, with the published material only serving as plausible deniability in the case someone suspects Valve is behind it all. In any case, they secretly pump money there while the developers at the main company concentrate their efforts on a lower stakes killer app like Alyx, that sparks back interest into the Half-Life series. When Borealis is finished they pick it up a la Black Mesa and publish it with their blessing.
People won't complain about an indie game, especially one as well done as this. Interest in Half-Life: Renewed, Half-Life 3: released, series: saved, VR market: revolutionized.
ah man I was searching for a gmod addon that simulated wind drag and lift forces to build real planes, I never quite found one that worked very well. now I'm really looking forward to playing with this. (I think I said this on the last video too lol oh well)
Nothing these guys are making will be open-source, and they are using unreal engine 4, not Source engine. These guys have nothing to do with Valve, just amateur devs building a fan-made game.
We've open sourced the game's Half-Life 2 style movement code and a number of tool repositories at github.com/projectborealis :)
@@evolicious The Source engine is a heavily modded Quake/id tech engine and Valve had nothing to do with ID software back then, just a bunch of amature game devs building a game.

When your physics professor is also a game developer.
Game developers usually need a strong background in math and since math is the language of physics, generally developers who work on physics engines are pretty good at approximating physics phenomena with computers. The complexity with fluid dynamics isn't that its hard to understand, its just really hard to accurately model and compute without finite modelling techniques. The cool this that developers do is simulate physics like air drag, etc. is they make it accurate enough to seem believable and then optimize it in clever ways so that the simulation does not utilize a lot of computer resources, some of these algorithms and methods are truly marvelous.
rather have this for a physics class, then a Zoom call. Just have a gmod server, where a prof can use it to display basic physic ideas (e.g. kinetics, projectile motion)
@@TheCabbageMan you mean programmers. not all developers do that.
@@MarioGotMilk-Remake that's why i said developers who work on physics engines
When you are real life Gordon Freeman developing a game about yourself.
This is a really good unique selling point just as half life 2 had the gravity gun, this could be used for a couple of puzzles between combat to break up the pacing a bit.
Now I want a wind zone weapon that spawns a temporary gust to blow enemies and items too heavy for the gravity gun or with with large wind resistance like a sail and to help the players jump long distances.
Super charged hair dryer?
Bass system. There is a prototype for flame extinguising
Maybe a puzzle that utilizes the magnus effect!
Just make it a giant palm leaf
yes! an Airblast would be a great idea for a new weapon
If this is the last we hear of Project Borealis it's a fitting thing to go out on. I revisit this video every once in a while just to marvel at how good their work on this system was. Its simultaneous capability to be awe inspiring, push game technology forward, and lend itself to interesting gameplay effects is so so quintessentially half life.

They are working on it
@@fireflythe7 Source? I really wanna know
@@tanybrachid they made some kind of teaser post on their twitter, so we may finally get an update soon
@@someguywithahat5690 Still the thing is that if it goes too slow then the base they started on gets outdated before it finishes, which makes them redo stuff they already done and eventually end up in an infinite loop unless technology stops for long enough for them to finish, which is unlikelly at the moment, and capitalism and investments bla bla bla you know the drill.
Мы всё ещё ждём и наедимся, удачи в разработке!
Project borealis is giving themselves such a high standart that i'm scared the game will be stuck in developpment hell
Do not worry. Valve have not joined the server :0 IF they do be very scared maggot ;)
Yeah it appears they are dumping a ton of time and effort into silly stuff like this. It's cool, but all that time and effort could be spent writing or making a better in game world.
@@rubiconnn Physics was one of the main Half Life2's selling points, it worked very well and people loved it. This is the same, but more.
@@Youuuuuu This is arguably worse. Now when you try to shoot objects at enemies with the gravity gun, it will wildly fly around and miss your target. It's not predictable making something that was already perfect worse. Whereas the time spent on shit like this could have spent on more important things.
Feature creep. Give it 4 years and the updates will stop. Valve dropping more VR shovelware is gonna put projects like these in a coffin.
It keeps slowly updating, and everytime there's an update it gets better and better

maybe alyx was meant to slow the hype so people would know what to expect and not get angry when Half-Life 3 isn't the best keyboard and mouse game ever made
to be honest, I dont think half life 2 is all that awesome, I'm pretty sure I have more playtime in FEAR, so I'll be glad that they're just finishing the story, and HL3 is NOT going to be the best game ever made, it's just the most anticipated game of all time
@@felixftw4702 I liked hl2 to me it's just a well made classic, I loved the story, atmosphere, music and gameplay, can't say I've ever played fear, and I've had doubts about hl3 being good since every time an update was asked about Gaben kept pushing it off, to me the longer they wait the more they'd drastically change about what was loved about the game, and I think they didn't have an end story made for the franchise either, either way I don't think I'd mind a fan made idea of what hl3 could be, that's why I enjoyed the news about this project when it started.

Wind: Uno reverse
oh god pls dont exist
If they polish perfectly this feature there's gonna be no problem, since an object with such density and speed and also thrown at such short range from the objective (about 30 to 45 meters roughly) isn't gonna be strongly affected by the wind, this resulting in the trajectory of the object not being strongly modified by the air
Yes, I love lunching saws
the saw will be aerodynamic
@@pablomejia953 especially, if they mean the circular saw blades, being thrown parallel to the wind direction it would cut straight through the wind, and if the drag is realistic the teeth being angled the way they are there should be a slight rotation, making it even easier to move through the air
Gordon: *launches a saw blade with gravity gun*
Wind: "So you have chosen... death."
No bro, the saw blade has a centrifugal force and cuts through the wind due to its geometry. It will not be affected by wind as long as you throw it correctly.

I have high hopes for this. I hope this doesn't get cancelled, it might be the only way to end the Half-Life series
I dont think they've been demotivated, I think they've just hit a point in development where you can't show off something flashy. Absolutely phenomenal. Seriously. I hope you guys see this project to completion. Seriously why hasn't Valve pick up you guys yet to make this thing official? Probably still licking their wounds from Artifact or scared that they wouldn't be able to stuff in loot boxes, skins or hats.
Because they are amateur devs that are not even remotely within the pedigree of professional game developers? Also the fact that this game has nothing to do with Half Life, it's a fan made project based-on a conceptual HL3 story that all the writers decided against. It's a fan-made project and I'm sure Valve sees it as pretty cool, like they see Black Mesa.
FYI, Artificial was a huge success in terms of play-ability and concurrent players, but it had a very rocky start.
Valve is more concerned and focused on, oh IDONTKNOW, facilitating a multi-billion dollar industry of consumer modern VR that they invented themselves a decade ago. Along with leading the entire industry with open-source software for VR hardware and software development (OpenXR), engineering the best VR hardware on the market (Index), developing a game engine (source 2) that has more scaleability than anything we have ever seen, helping developers around the world with VR, while also developing the next Half Life in what will be the best VR game since and have two more flagship VR games in development as well.
I'd say you definitely have no clue what you are talking about, kid.
@@evolicious The average gamer could care less about any of that because they just want videogames waved in their faces. They also don't have vr, and don't want to spend money on it, whether out of doubt, refusal to budget, or because dad said no. Ironic considering they need/have a decent pc to even play this fan game. People have too much faith in this project because they're desperate to convince Valve not to make them spend money.
As for why Valve doesn't pick them up, it's obvious. No name devs, and a story that isn't Half Life. Mark Laidlaw might have wrote it after he left Valve, but he also returned to work on Alyx's story. Epistle 3 is about as canon as the HL2 beta story isn't. Speaking of Alyx, Valve doesn't need or want competition, especially from another original fan game after Hunt Down the Freeman.
Not to mention the fact that these guys are using UE4, the engine owned by Valve's biggest competitor right now. Valve has zero reason to back a UE4 game when they have Source 2.
absolutly incredible stuff
This is Really Neat, keep going
I’m kinda curious how this will affect gameplay. After going backs and replaying HL2 one of the best part was knowing that while the physics were great they were still simple enough that anything you grabbed with the gravity gun could pretty much be used just as effectively as a weapon
yeah, i can imagine shooting a barrel and it curveballing away from my target. maybe i could adjust, but it would be very annoying
systems should enhance your intent, not fight with it.
@@Coldsteak Not really how reality works though.
@@theoutergod8666 No one gives a shit if it's "realistic" or not. This is half life, Not red dead 2. If it is a detriment to gameplay than it isn't "realism", it's bad game design. The gravity gun is meant to be used strategically by being able to make pretty much anything it grabs a weapon. So when this "wind" system is implemented that skill is pretty much gone since 90% of the time the item would probably just curvball in the opposite direction, rendering the gravity gun almost useless.
I for one love grav-punting radiators at people and things too but unless they over exaggerate the forces beyond belief I don’t see much concern to come from aero effects since I wasn’t attacking people with them from far away to begin with. Unless you were trying to trick shot hitting someone with a barrel along the coast from a tower I don’t think you’ll be having many issues. A lot of the up close and personal gameplay will be the same when it comes to bashing crabs with crates and sawing things in half.
@@bioswalesbioswales3004 that being said though, air drag will make trickshotting someone along the coast with a barrel from a tower all the more impressive
2:06 "open source it?"
YES PLEASE!
I love how realistic the dev textures look
This is looking absolutely sick. And even with recent suggestions that HL3 might finally be on its way, and even if it comes out before you guys are done, I'll still be playing this. It deserves the respect of the fans :D
