This game sees my painted British force coming up against some headless, unpainted Germans, with a few soviets posing as Germans thrown in for good measure.
I'm a bit crap, so there's a bunch of stuff I got wrong. This game isn't intended to be instructional in any way, so take it as such at your own peril!

That moment in the video when you start thinking it's not Britain Vs Germany, but Britain Vs Undead then headless soldiers, failed morality tests, and the inability to shoot ground units accurately start to make a lot more sense.
This was one of the first videos I watched to learn about BA. And after watching a bunch of others with exquisite terrain and extravagant tables and models I come back to this because it’s refreshing to see you can play the game without all the expensive stuff! Thanks for this and your humor!
As a wargame novice this is very useful, because you are happy to admit you 'got things wrong'. This is one of the main things that newbies like myself worry about and puts them off trying Bolt Action - we worry about getting things wrong. So it's great to see more experienced people doing this stuff and not being too worried about making mistakes (as long as they learn from them). Enjoyed the video very much, thanks.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
People being worried about making mistakes is something I notice a lot too. It stops people from doing so many things, which is a shame. It seems to some people making a mistake or being seen to make a mistake is the worst thing in the world and they might cover it up or edit it out in videos etc, but I don't think that helps anyone.
MORMITER'S WAR
Part One: Von Ghoul's Undead Army
Von Ghoul survived... Will he return in part two? Who knows!!
I liked the video just the way it was, well done Herbert. I would love to see a few more of these videos as they are really great to watch and I do learn from them. Many thanks and have fun,
Joe
oh wow yes, please do more of these. Very enjoyable and thank you for taking the time to share your cool efforts with us all.
Fantastic stuff. PLEASE DO MANY MORE, these solo videos are awesome. Unpainted minis, headless minis, not worrying about exact rules in favour of playing a good game.... THIS is how the spirit of wargaming should be (like it was in the good old `old school` days). I absolutely loved this and enjoyed it thoroughly from start to finish.
Very cool. Throwing dice and moving guys around is the best way to pick the rules up faster. Very enjoyable watch
I've always found I learn things best by doing, rather than reading or watching videos, though videos are really helpful too.
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
that.. and making a video of it and posting it for 1000+ people to tell you where you made mistakes helps too
Instructional and entertaining! "I want to give that infantry section over there some bullets." So many funny comments you've also convinced me to go out and by some dice and figures. :)
Most entertaining Bolt Action video I've seen! Hope there's more.
I really enjoy your videos for reasons. Keep up the great work.
Good video and an excellent voice-over, well done. I'm hoping for more...
I love your videos they're very entertaining and I love your witty sayings and jokes keep up with the good work
new to Bolt Action here.... and also enjoy solo wargaming very much. I very much enjoyed your video and appreciate the time and attention you took to make it, and for kindly sharing it with us.
Crackin' video mate, keep up the good work.
Headless germans....Whats next, flying pigs D:
Great video, enjoyed it a lot!
Just a little bit biased play :) Some might want that cocked die re rolled but I'm fine with it. Run Fritz run.
Yep have to have those heads to win hard to shoot straight with no eyes. Nice entertaining game. Need to find you an opponent.
I really like your name haha
I really enjoyed this video and I hope there will be another of the same type!
It's 5 dice for the medium machine gun, +1 for the Germans to make 6. The list builder you mentioned already took the German +1 into account.
I figured that might be the case. It probably even says that somewhere... I didn't see it though. My opponent was too daft to notice my unintentional cheating!
This is the best solo war gaming utuber I’ve seen
Love your videos.
I am new to bolt action but, I am almost certain at 8:10 you should have rolled for superficial damage because you rolled the lowest possible number to damage. Your d6 roll should have had a -3 modifier.
Mike B, you are correct. When the damage roll equals the minimum needed to damage, it's "superficial damage", D6-3 on the damage chart.
really like your channel Logo dude!
Says "Loo"tenant instead of "Left"tenant.
Triggered XD XD XD
leftenant in dear old Blighty.
@Sicarius Flamus sorry but up in America's hat (Canada) we say "left"tenant
From a fellow nompty, well done and getting the rules mostly right is fine in my book.
Gotta love the commentary :D
“ here are the British witch are fully built and painted, and here are some headless Germans with some headless soviets “
Nice GW ta ape measure, also you might wanna include more buildings even if they can't be occupied. Block LOS really helps the flow of BA.
Is that PIAT gunner shooting it from his shoulder?! Now that's Weird WWII! Keep it WEIRD!
I know I'd be terrified to face headless Soviet Germans!
Good video well done
Such headless fun..
I must say, the infantry squads are not platoons. A British platoon was about 30 men
Very nice
That's awesome :D
omg i love youre vodeos so much !!!! i would like a video where you tell us how you made this gaming table you played on ??? good job dude ;)
Thanks!
There isn't really much to the table. I just made three simple 2x4 foot rectangles with plywood tops. I'm no carpentry scientist, so the joints are all bad and none are square. The grass is just a grass mat by Heller... or Heki... or something like that. It's intended for model railway tables and comes in a big roll.
Awesome stuff! Inspired me to play with my unpainted army :)
At 24:03 there's a -1 modifier for firing at a small unit
nice job
Awesome vid! Are the rest of the components painted and built now? hehe. BTW - what is your table space? What is an ideal table space to play BOLT ACTION with that many miniatures?
I think the tabletop is around 180x120cm. reasonably close to 6x4ft. I have no idea what's really ideal though. Depends on what kind of space you've got I guess.
I don't think much that wasn't painted has been painted haha
HI again, just one suggestion - as I understand it, Bolt Action is a 'line of sight' game, meaning that your figures have to be able to 'see' their targets to engage them by direct fire (obviously this is different when firing things like motors which are not LoS). So a few shots closer to the table to show what your figures are 'seeing' might be nice.
You're right. I had intended to do more of that when making this video, but I guess it had just kind of slipped my mind after I started. It's something I made a note about when I was editing this, so I'll try to do more of it in the next videos.
I do it too don't worry it's all good!
The half-track normally gets 5 shots. Hitlers Buzzsaw makes it 6. That's why the rule book says 6 for the German Halftrack. With Hitler's buzzsaw, it gives LMGs 5 shots instead of 4 and MMGs 6 shots instead of 5. Also 6s on kills you would reroll for an exceptional kill and if you roll a 6 again, you get to choose who dies. Also Assault weapons don't pay for movement, so SMGs and Assault rifles on Germans side don't pay for movement, only the Kar98ks do. The 2 man squad at 23:50 you need 6 to hit because it's now a small infantry squad which adds 1 to hit. Hit base is 3 +1 for movement +1 for Long Range, + 1 for small squad=6 to hit.
good video..well narrated, aside from a couple of mistakes which everybody makes from time to time (smgs dont take -1 to hit when moving)....this game always seems to work better with more terrain and cover.
I've thought about getting into this as a hobby but it seems like a bit difficult for me
where did you get the pinmarkers? i need those :)
They came in the Band of Brothers starter set. I'm pretty sure they can be bought separately from Warlord's site.
ok thanks :)
Really good video! I had fun watching it. You caught most of your own mistakes, so bravo for you.
At 20:10 , you mentioned that shaped charge weapons don't suffer the -1 penalty for shooting at long range. That's not quite right. They DO suffer the -1 penalty for the >to hit< roll at long range just like everything else. What they don't suffer is the -1 penetration modifier that AT weapons suffer at long range. It's a REALLY common mistake.
A little later, when you removed the firer from the PIAT team, that would have removed the entire team regardless of the loader's morale test. These are "support team weapons", and If the firer in a support team weapon is killed (sniper. bazooka, MMG, PIAT...) the weapon is assumed destroyed and the whole team comes off the board.
Read up some more on units in vehicles, too, like I need to do. In all, you did a great job and made a fun video. I'd be happy to play against you. Thanks for your work.
Coming in way late to the party here, but I think that PIAT squad should have had an extra -1 to hit because of "small squad" status.
By the way look at Platoon Forward by Too Fat Lardies. Adds a solo system for Bolt Action that is quite usable
Mortimer's Commandos vs Baron von bratwurst's whermarcht
Mmmmm. Bratwurst
11:53 so, I just got the Band of Brothers starter set (I was looking for a guide on the assembly of the vehicle, and your previous video suggested this one... i lose focus easily...) but, I believe the HMG have 5 shots, and the Hitler's Buzzsaw special rule makes it so the MG42 have 6shots, total, not 6 shots base+1 to 7shots total.
I also comment as I watch the video, so, pehaps you adressed it later on, but I find it easier to tag the moment when I do so while watching
21:23 also, any weapon with the "assault" characteristic (including assault rifles) do not get the penalty for firing while moving. I guess the excess of bullets are supposed to make up for the lack of aim, though my experience at the range indicates otherwise. I believe that it is described in p66 in the second edition rulebook.
Could you tell me which scale it is please?
28mm scale, which is 1:56 scale.
Herbert Erpaderp Thank you very much! And keep up your awesome work!
ANOTHER!
maby flames of war next?
I will play flames of war some time. Probably not until after the new edition is out though.
I challenge you to a model duel!
Plz make more
I’m also a saddo and have no friends so I play by myself
A few rookie moves, but overall a great bat rep.
I dont get why people dont use the cheap 1/72 figures and vehicles for this.
Last time I saw cheap Airfix 1/72 figures they were pretty bad. Rubbery, mis-shapen and unappealing. I'd rather use figures that look good.
There's a lot of reasons why someone would prefer to use more expensive (or cheaper) models or different scales.
Could be all your friends are using whatever scale and you probably can't play with them fairly if you want to use differently sized models.
It might be that the thought of using a different scale than the game tells you to never occurred to them and/or when it did they already had enough of a collection to not want to start again.
Money might not be an issue.
They might just like that scale better.
None of them are wrong. Different people just have different perspectives.
Herbert Erpaderp that was in the 70 s mate. The range now covers pretty much everything and is extremely detailed.
Nighthawk Dutch chameleon Because the miniatures are crap possibly.
Airfix suck. There are TONS of great 1/72 scale soldiers made by other companies. Check out www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Index.aspx and HO buildings are in scale with them which can be found second hand cheap. You can make a GIANT Stalingrad sets with factories, shops, apartments very easily.
Headless Germans :))))))
Yeah, you defiantly need to learn the rules better. Lol.
Defiantly you say?
Please "play by yourself" not "play with yourself". Not the same...
I know how the language works. I also know what I said.
Find time to play with yourself..lmfao...
