    The great thing about this gadget is that you can mix while slowly adding another color so that it changes to the point you want.

      True mark of a good magnetic mixer is how slow it can go consistently.

    This is a great video. I work with magnetic stir mixers both in a lab setting and in my hobby airbrush painting. A few key things here with magnetic stir mixers: do your best to position what you're trying to mix in the very center, size of the magnetic star bar is important, and make sure the bottom of the container that you're trying to mix in is as flat as possible. I can elaborate more on how to optimize the use magnetic stir mixers but it'd be a wall of text. If my man Barbatos Rex wants me to elaborate, I'd be happy too. Otherwise I think magnetic stir mixers would be a great addon to any hobby painter's workshop and overall great video.

    Magnetic stirrers are good as a mixer when run at a slow speed and with larger quantities of paint, say +10mL. The smooth stir bars are better for this use. The stir bars that have edges to them (like at 23:53) will bounce around due to the edges as it spins and will splash if not enough volume in the container. This type is great for mixing larger volumes of liquid. When the stir bar "dances around" when it's spinning, the magnetic poles of the stir bar have not latched with that of the stir plate and you need to drop the speed so the magnetic poles can synchronize. Great video content as always!

    The round magnet that is included with the black mixer is used to remove the mixing rods from whatever container you put the rods in. Place the magnet on the bottom of the container, then move it across the bottom, up the container side and out of the container.

    If the ball bearings were magnetic, they would rust because of the iron content and contaminate the paint if the paint was water based. Ideally the ball bearings for mixing should be stainless steel and high-quality stainless steel is not magnetic. Plus, the ball bearings are not magnets with two poles.

  • @sgtatarms4780

    Right, so. The way you're intended to use that magnetic rod (and chess piece) is that you can drag it along the outside of the jar and pull the magnet along with it. And out of the jar.
    If you're mixing up something expensive or harmful, you don't want to risk losing any or get exposed to it by sticking the magnetic rod down into the solution.

    If you cut some 2mm mild steel rod into short lengths and round off the ends in drill with a file you can use that as a stirrer. They'll be as cheap as chips and you can just drop one into each paint pot and forget about them.

    Stainless steel or copper bb's won't work, you'd need carbon steel BB's, but those could rust if you are not real carful about cleaning and drying them after using them. I am curious if the coating on the "pills" are immune to solvents. Neat idea though, thanks for demonstrating these!

    I've been curious about the magnetic mixers for paint for a while now. Seems to work great with thin paints like lacquers. It would be interesting to see how it would work with thicker stuff like Testors enamels and water based stuff like Mission Models and Createx.

    the game piece magnet does not have to be on the bottom, it will stick to the side with a more comfortable grip, and you can walk the pill up the side out of the glass, put your paper towel on the magnet so you can use it to pull the pill away instead of your fingers.
    the erratic dancing is an effect of lack of weight, but it is also a function, the offset wobble disrupts the vortex stability and helps to sweep the sides and move the center of the vortex.

  • @RuthlessMojo

    Run the magnet up the side of the glass while it's holding the pill and you can pull it all the way out without dumping anything and without a mess.

  • @CharlieO_
    @CharlieO_ 2 месяца назад

    Just looked this up - the shiney neodymium magnets are typically coated in nickel, then copper, then nickel again. And they DO come in ball bearing shape and size. HOWEVER, unless they say somewhere on the packaging that they're ok to be submerged for any period of time, the chemical attraction to the iron inside will eventually undo the nickel and copper finish, and you will have iron and boron in your paint. Those magnetic mixers the stirrers come with are ceramic - they use them in chemistry because of their tendency to be non reactive. Even if they did make ceramic coated magnets that were usable so we could just leave them in there, they would be cost prohibitive at best. Chem guys use these where they need to keep a solution moving hands free while waiting for a reaction or adding more ingredients. The real best use for something like this would be (imo) restoring old paint that you cant replace and/or adding old paint or pigment or glitter or other metals to a new or existing medium.

    • @CharlieO_
      @CharlieO_ 2 месяца назад

      ..also, DUH, hot mixing paints a few drops at a time to achieve a visual color match! Can't believe I didn't think of that first!🙄

    • @CharlieO_
      @CharlieO_ 2 месяца назад

      Ok OK- one more! If you rig your brushes to hang into a swirling bath of solvent, you could clean/restore them. Also, swirling solvent could be used in a similar way as an ultrasonic parts washer. You would just need to put a siv-like shelf between the rotating stirrer and the part you wanted cleaned. So most people will say, just use a parts washer, but with different sized beakers and other equipment, assuming you had the need for all that and not the space for all the stuff its replacing, it could be quite the space saving little workhorse.
      Also, they make magnets in all North or all south. I wonder if that could mean you could get two balls or some other shape, orbiting around each other inside a beaker for better, faster mixing job. Just spinning my wheels here.
