    0:26 - How long does it take to process food into stored fat or muscle or energy? If I eat fewer calories today will I see the difference tomorrow or the next day?
    1:19 - Do you think there are specific health benefits to weight training? Metabolic, cognitive, hormones?
    2:26 - My parents are saying Obamacare has caused their premiums to rise, but I'm not convinced that's the reason (they're in TX). What causes premiums to rise? How can I help them find better rates/plans?
    4:45 - What does current research say about eggs? My grandparents' generation was told eggs were bad because of cholesterol, my mother was told not to eat egg substitutes. What's being told to my generation?
    5:35 - Pros and cons of donating my eggs?
    6:44 - I've been getting a lot of conflicting info about lyme disease, some of it from different Drs (chronic lyme vs. post-treatment Lyme Syndrome, ideal length of antibiotic treatment). What's the deal?
    7:52 - Is there a difference in hand cleanliness if you use soap before wetting your hands?
    9:24 - I know that a causal link between knuckle cracking and arthritis has been disproved, but do these results also apply to other joints that people can crack e.g. necks, ankles, wrists, etc?
    9:58 - What are your thoughts on the mixed research, or lack of research, on helmeting babies for plagiocephaly or brachycephaly?
    10:55 - Is yoga or a form of cardio better for managing anxiety?
    11:55 - Is the US treating MCR-1 containing bacteria as a serious threat? If not, should they be?
    13:20 - What is the evidence for implementing Nurse Practitioner as primary care? Are the outcomes different from family physicians?
    13:57 - Are sugar substitutes (Aspartame, Sucralose, etc) safe to consume in "high" amounts? Maybe 10-15 packets a day (each equivalent to 2 tbsp of sugar according to the packet).
    15:40 - Will you do a video on SSRIs? How effective are they? How common are they? Are they suitable for children/adolescents? Side effects?
    16:04 - Is drinking out of disposable plastic water bottles bad for your health?

    Love this! This is a great way to handle Q&A. I love Aaron's responses and his unique way of being understanding while also playfully condescending, but having John in there as a comedy back-up was phenomenal. Also, the higher production value--programmed transitions, less stuttering, etc.--made it an overall better show!

    Please also take SNRIs along with that SSRI episode, and the current research on the difference between them. My current experience with an SSRI was that it was good for about half a year and then the benefits tapered of as I got "used" to it. Now on the SNRI the benefits seem to be bigger and also longer lasting (at least a year for now and hopefully many more to come).

    Question! There are a lot of people making broad claims about weight/body composition and health on the internet. E.g., high body fat composition isn't a health risk, losing weight by diet and exercise only works for a small portion of the population, each person has a wildly different optimal body composition, etc. There's a ton of linked research, of variable quality, and it's just crazy contradictory. Did you do an omnibus video on these subjects that I'm unable to find? If not, what do we actually know?

    just at the very end you seemed to just BARELY touch on a topic that i've wanted to see treated by Healthcare Triage... microwaving, particularly microwaving plastic containers. it ALMOST sounded as though you were lumping "microwaving" in with the list of baloney concerns regarding plastic bottles.
    will we ever see a Healthcare Triage episode (or just a longer-format answer in one of these videos) dispelling myths about microwaving plastic?

    This was very interesting and informative. But I have a follow up question about eggs. Similar to the recent studies about bacon, I've read at least one study that found a consistent link between eggs and colon and rectal cancer. Do you guys know anything about this? Is this a good enough reason to avoid eggs?

    • @KevintheBooth
      @KevintheBooth 9 лет назад

      +MagicTurtle643 Isn't that from char and the coking process though? causing an increase in free radicals and thus causing a slight increase in cancer rates?

    • @MagicTurtle643
      @MagicTurtle643 9 лет назад

      Given what you have said now, I am fairly certain it's not the egg itself but the processing the egg undergoes that is the issue.

    When you do the episode about SSRIs, will you talk about why they don't work/trace the opposite effect than intended for some people and what those people can look for as alternatives?

  • @DCHite
    @DCHite 9 лет назад

    Funny, but when I spoke with the insurance broker who handles our company's insurance, I DEFINITELY got the impression that the "Affordable Care Act" had drammatically increased insurance premiums. Maybe insurance professionals know more about that stuff than doctors.
    I suppose that when the 40% Cadillac Tax goes into affect that won't make any difference either.

  • @dwood2001
    @dwood2001 9 лет назад

    It's worth noting that while leaching from plastic bottles isn't usually an issue, it can be if those bottles are left in the Sun, causing melting of the plastic. Supermarket supply chains have been known to allow pallets to sit in hot locations for too long, and so there's an element of randomness that is unavoidable. This multiplies the amount of leeching by a huge amount, and if you shop at the same supermarket every week that could really add up. Personally I'd rather stick with glass and stainless steel, which is better for the environment anyway.

    • @repker
      @repker 9 лет назад +1

      +David Wood I'd be willing to bet that even given that, the amount of potential harm is probably still low/negligible. Just a guess though.

    • @dwood2001
      @dwood2001 9 лет назад +2

      +Kevvlio I think these kinds of bets come from watching Healthcare Triage :p But there isn't really any evidence from which to make that bet. There isn't strong evidence either way. We DO know that these chemicals enter the blood stream in significant quantities. We just have no idea what levels may cause problems in humans, if any.
      There are tons of associations, but as far as I can tell very few RCTs in anything other than rats. BPA has been associated with hormone disruption (including low sperm count, polycystic ovary diseases, early or delayed puberty, behavioural changes), cardiovascular changes, obesity, high blood pressure, and even some cancers. The best I could find in terms of causation was a randomized *crossover* trial which connected it to immediate increases in blood pressure. There is much stronger evidence of issues in the case of pregnant women and young children than for adults, for whom there's a good chance it's safe in common levels. Much better quality research needs to be done though.
      The FDA looked at the evidence, and said since no causation has been proven, BPA is safe. The WHO believes there is such a wealth of association-based research that it recommended against their use.
      (Side note: While a lot of plastics have gone BPA free in recent years, most simply replaced the chemical with a different, similar chemically, and largely untested one, putting us back at square one. There are many chemicals in plastics that end up in the blood stream in significant quantities, where we simply do not know if they have an effect.)
      But here's the thing, and this is my biggest pet peeve about Healthcare Triage in general: While Dr Carroll rightly points out when no causal link has been found, and it isn't time to freak out, there's a difference between freaking out about plastics and freaking out about, say... gluten.
      Avoiding use of plastics (especially easily melted plastics) is easy to do, is far better for the environment (helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions), and has no downsides if you're reasonably well-off.
      If I can easily switch my family from a material where more research is needed, to one that is well-researched as safe, and there is no potential downside... as an intelligent person I'm going to do it. Dr Carroll's "there's no good evidence" doesn't always mean you shouldn't do it when the potential harms of making a change are negligible.

    I'm surprised about the water bottle answer. According to environmental engineers, it's risky to use bottled water because it develops biofilm and as a consumer you can't be assured as to how long the bottle's been there for. Is that level of biofilm still too low for health impacts? And is this extensible to still water that has been left out for longer periods of time?
    Reuse of water bottles is perfectly fine from the environmental engineering standpoint, but it's dependent on actual washing of the bottle. So if you use a pipette cleaner (or something similar) and soap, then reuse should essentially never be an issue. Otherwise, you're simply adding biofilm to the pre-existing biofilm (since they can only reduce biofilm levels in drinking water, not eliminate it).

    Why is it legal in the US to offer so much money for donating your egg cells? Since it does has a (small) impact on your life, I can imagine that there is a set amount (mainly the costs themselves) that you can receive, but it's ridiculous how much money is involved.
    Is it true that men even get paid to donate sperm cells? Because that would be the most ridiculous thing ever. Oh wait, that's Americna gun 'law'. Nevermind.

      +Timmie1995 The compensation for donating eggs IS surprisingly high, but the hormonal treatments and actual process of extraction are no small thing. They can have a more than small impact on a woman's life, and perhaps even put her at risk for future complications such as PCOS. While sperm donation is a very quick and easy process (not sure men get paid for that, but it wouldn't surprise me), egg donation takes months and involves medical procedures and drug therapies with legitimate side effects and risks. I see no problem with the compensation, especially considering how much egg donation centers make off of the adoptive parents of the donated egg.

      ***** For me, it's more about the amount. When I said small, I didn't mean to make it seem like nothing (my bad); what I meant was that, in theory, the effects are temporary (so not like in the case of donating a kidney).
      So I don't think a compensation (costs+risks) is out of place, but it should, in my opinion, not be something you do for a profit. I don't have any rational reason for that, but I don't think it's moral to make thousands of dollars that way, especially since that means the aspiring mother will probably pay a lot.
      If the compensation is paid for by the organisation performing the donation, and not the mother, I'd probably think it's fine, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case. That means not everyone who wants children, but can't, has the opportunity to receive a donated egg cell, which I see as ethically wrong.
      Tl;dr: a proportional compensation is not out of place in my opinion, but keep it within those proportions in order to make it available for everyone with an unfulfilled childwish.

    Is there any medical topic that Dr. Carroll admits having no knowledge of, or does he always say 'there is no evidence' etc?

      He does in HCT Live because he sometimes gets asked questions he doesn't know. Nothing on my mind right now though.
