Grunge didn't explode until 1991. However the year 1990 was a time when Underground/ Alternative Rock was starting to make some noise courtesy of releases by Janes Addiction, The Pixies, Sonic Youth & Faith No More who appeared on SNL.
yeah . Tad, Mudhoney, fugazi, Dinosaur Jr, Soundgarden, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard. PJ Harvey,NIN, The young Gods, Butthole surfers , Slint etc..etc... i just turned 20 in 1990 and man , Metal seemed so daft back then.....Prong was the only metal i still listened to
Depends on definition, the bands themselves never called their style Grunge, this was coined by the Sub Pop label I believe, and referred to the Seattle scene of the late 80s, very much an underground scene, which had its roots in the early Green River and Melvins records. That scene was basically over by the time Pearl Jam and Nirvana released their 1991 albums. A lot of new bands after '91 kinda tried to 'sound like Nirvana' but had no connection to that underground scene
It's a good album compared to most of metal but fairly average when compared with other Maiden albums, hence its lack of popularity with Maidenites. I happen to think it's better than most people give it credit for, but that's a fairly minority opinion.

Even Anthrax themselves are like "wait, wut?"
Damn. Actually a pretty good year for metal. Never realized.
Painkiller: 3/5... WTF, Mister Popoff?!
1.Rust. 2. Seasons 3.Painkiller 4. Cowboys 5. No prayer for me.
I like Painkiller more than 3/5
WTF, Persistence of Time is a fucking Masterpiece it's amazing!
It got 6th place?
@@Drforrester31 the guy suggested it wasn't that great really.
I know right! I so disagree on all the points he made...its one of their best records & the production is great too...i just don't get why anthrax gets so much hate....he's way out of his mind!
It is their best work easily.
@@MrCalmao I still put Among the Living top, but Persistence of Time is second best for me🤘🤘🤘
Impact is Imminent from Exodus was awesome. Didn't seem to get much love back in the day and I still don't hear much for it.
I thought this one was lacking something at the time. Not their strongest set of songs. Of course, I'm probably the only person in the world who thought Force of Habit was pretty good (but definitely NOT one of their classic albums)
1990 was a pretty big year for metal. Tough list to make.... Now bring on 1986,1989,1983...
1989 is gonna be insane…
For 1989 I automatically think about Sepultura Beneath The Remains....🤘
I’ll do a personal non Metal ish list, but am curious if you liked that Ian Gillian album released that year Martin?
1. Jawbreaker “Unfun”
2. Uncle Tupelo “No Depression”
3. Iron Maiden “No Prayer For the Dying”
4. Sonic Youth “Goo”
5. AC/DC “The Razors Edge”
@Martin Popoff I love how you called him the Punk Rock Deep Purple. 👍🏾 👏🏽 🤘🏾
What a bloody great list! I am not familiar with Entombed, but I do agree with the rest. Annihilator’s Never, Neverland is great as well.
Death Angel - Act III surely an honourable mention
Exhorder, "Slaughter In The Vatican" needed to be part of the honorable mentions. A killer album from a killer band!
Came to add this.
Good Lord, Painkiller and NO Slaughter in the Vatican??
What's wrong with Peace Sells...Martin?
Rust in Peace deserves the top spot for sure. I liked Peace Sells' raw thrashiness a bit more but Rust is for sure is a prog thrash uberpeice... Agree with Martin about Suicidal as well.. always overlooked and shit upon band but some of their guitar work and especially on How will I Laugh is exemplary.. IMO..
How Will I Laugh Tomorrow has no bad songs. 5/5 any day. Lights, Camera is also good, but HWILT is more consistent.
@@janneranta7373 I agree with you 100%. I played the hell out of that album after getting it. Lights Camera also got a lot of ear time for me, though. I don't think I'd want to choose one over the other. Both classics.
Always awesome to see some Kings X love.
New album to come .
Long live the Kings X
1. Cowboys
2. Rust
3. Seasons
4. Left Hand
5. Painkiller
all five skulls for me!
Awesome reviews from Popov - I agreed with every single rating - up to Megadeath ( Max: 3/5).
As I missed to vote - here’s my top 10 (as if anyone cares):
1. Slayer - Skeleton of Society
2. Danzig - II, Lucifuge
3. Entombed - Left Hand Path
4. Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
5. Celtic Frost - Vanity/Nemesis
6. Death - Spiritual Healing
7. Alice In Chains - Facelift
8. Iron Maiden - No Prayer for the Dying
9. Paradise Lost - Lost Paradise
10. Kreator - Coma of Souls
Megadeath had a decent release, just like Dio, Judas, Bathory & ACDC +++ many others. (I can't really rate Obituary as I heard them years later...)
The GOAT is back 🐐 Popoff the absolute legend!
What a shame. Nobody even mentioned the Iced Earth self titled
RIP is the best music album ever made.
Iron Maiden's No Prayer for the Dying. It's a good album. Not sure how it didn't even get a mention?
It's a good album compared to most of metal but fairly average when compared with other Maiden albums, hence its lack of popularity with Maidenites. I happen to think it's better than most people give it credit for, but that's a fairly minority opinion.
@@DarkFire515 it's a better album than the next three, that's for sure. It has a good tempo throughout with upbeat tracks separated by good brooding numbers.
No Prayer would be #2 behind Rust in Peace for me. Love the grit on that album. Maiden can do no wrong.
Some of the sharpest, most memorable soloing on the entire Maiden's catalog to be found on No Prayer, if not the best.
Solid list and summed up my love for Pantera 100%! I loved Metallica- they were so heavy! And then i heard Pantera and Metallica's Black album came out and my 11 year old self found a new direction
my birth year. RIP my favorite metal album of all time
yay some beautiful music came out in the year I was born !
I like that two of these bands (Pantera & Alice In Chains) started out as glam/hair metal.
Lots of good metal albums came out in 1990, always had at least a few of these in the car. Rest In Peace is a metal masterpiece and deserves to be #1. Along with the bottom 4 and honorable mentions, there was Act III by Death Angel, The American Way by Sacred Reich, Souls Of Black by Testament, and Beg To Differ by Prong.
I graduated in 1990 and so did heavy metal!!!
Me too😀!!!!
I'd have added Gwar - Scumdogs of the Universe for an honorable mention, absolute classic.
Keeping metal roots alive. the majority of my vinyl collection is from 88-92
Honorable mentions:
Queensrÿche - Empire
Extreme - Extreme II: Pornograffitti
Steelheart - Steelheart
Bathory - Hammerheart
My Top 5 from 1990
Exhorder - Slaughter In The Vatican
Anthrax - Persistence Of Time
Deicide - Deicide
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Blind Guardian Tales from the Twilight World should have been somewhere on this list
