if you listen to the yes and Focus live albums from that period they are better than the studio ones too. Purple were better live coz TBH most of their songs were a bit crap anyway. Purple were at their best while improvising live. They were more of a jazz band really
Roger comes across as a really good bloke, he’s always very gracious and modest, especially when you look at how much he’s achieved in the world of music, but what I like the most about him is that when he’s given the opportunity to dish the dirt on someone he does the opposite and says something positive. Good man.👍
Ritchie B is a definite genius!!!!!! Purple is also the most underrated band of ALL TIME, yea, even perhaps the G.O.A.T! Their catalog covers almost all modern forms of Rock & Roll, and most bands after their time cite DP as a formative influence. I was watching some very old (Made in Japan) R.B. Solos, and he was a forerunner of the awesome Eddie VanHalen, he was doing stuff that Eddie mimicked years later!! PURE GENIUS. But he'd never admit he was. I also appreciate how Morse does not try to imitate, but "interpret" Ritchie. It's always a respectful Performance of the classic Purple! This band will still be together at 100 years old for some of the MkII gang 😂😂
What can I say about Roger Glover- awesome bass player in one of THEE best rock bands of all time- Deep Purple. Saw him perform with Rainbow in '79 on Down to Earth tour and then in '85 on the Perfect Strangers tour. He produced Priest's "Sin After Sin" record! Very modest and cool dude. He's an ICON!
I just saw an interview with David Coverdale in which he said he has no use for any of the guys in Purple except Glenn Hughes. He doesn't talk to any of them and has no plans to. Of course, that's Coverdale so what does that mean. But there is one person anyway who speaks badly of Roger. And of Ian Paice too for that matter,

Most metal sounds nothing like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC were rock n roll on steroids, but not bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden who are considered metal.

Rock n roll (Chuck Berry/Little Richard) was groove based with clean guitars and you can dance to it, same with disco. You can’t dance to metal. It’s dominated by distorted guitars and often times soulless vocals that sound like the Cookie Monster. Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye weren’t rock n roll but they sound more like it than Metallica. It’s just because hard rock/metal fans think they own the term. As far as pop, the Beatles were the biggest pop band of all time and came straight out of rock n roll.
I met Roger Glover in a small bar in Vermont where they were playing. Blackmore, Glover, pace and Turner. they were taking some time off from recording an album at a local golf club house that they rented for winter. They were all very nice awesome people and I will never forget it.
Ritchie is by far my favourite guitar man. As an artist and I love his persona. I don’t care at all if he is acting like this or like that. He is real and can do what he wants. Ritchie is synonymous of freedom. One more reason that I adore him. How many real free persons do you know?
Jimmy Page, Ed Van Halen, Joe Walsh, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth, and so many more. Blackmore is an ass and he is a second away atr all times of blowing up and throwing a 2 yr old like tantrum. BUT, he is a hell of a wicked player.
I loved Blackmore's talent just as much as any bloke. But his fucked up, egotistical behavior doesn't speak well of the man. I have known many great actors, most of them incredibly nice and easy to work with. But if you think that being a total jerk makes you special, it doesn't, it just makes you a jerk. I worked with William Shatner, and nobody liked him, not even his fellow cast members. Just try working with someone like this. I promise you, you won't like it.
I am SO sick of RR Hall of Fame. This seals the deal. How Deep Purple wouldn't be inducted first eligible year is madness. Smoke On The Water launched a million guitarists; and they were among biggest groups in the world. I was just watching Eddie Van Halen video playing Deep Purple back stage warming up. Purple's 80's comeback album was huge and really proved their worthiness.
To call Perfect Strangers a comeback album would imply that the previous album, Come Taste The Band, is weak, which is complete bullshit cause it's one of the best albums they've made. It's my favorite actually

From what i read he was going to attend if he'd been allowed to play with the band. But Gillan (my favorite rock vocalist of all time who I once met) had no class and nixed that idea. He should've allowed Ritchie to play one song with the band and then one with Morse--you get the idea.
@@joelombrdo It really wasn’t just a “Gillan-thing” to not wanting to play with Blackmore. More a matter of management difficulties. But the band was pleased to see him go. Deep Purple was close to implode, and it took a new guitarplayer to bring back the magic in the band.

Deep Purple Perfect Strangers Was a Legendary iconic Album and Tour. I'm thrilled to this day that I got to see that tour. It was like seeing Led Zeppelin or Ozzy with Sabbath Etc It felt special and was special.
Eh, it would just be silly if Satriani was included as he was just a temporary substitute. Joe Lynn Turner also doesn't deserve it since the album they made with him was nothing but a Rainbow album in disguise (and a pretty bad one at that).

Despite all the changes throughout the years I still think that the one who’s going to be considered as the original guitarist of the purple will always be Richie Blackmore, I think it was the prime mover of the band a great musician and an epic guitar player that no one will ever be able to replace.
was a wrong move replacing him with tommy bolin... i love him on purple but he did what he could, ritchies departure was fresh back then, so no matter what tommy could ve done, ritchie was massively missed. but if deep purple never had ritchie and had bolin instead, its fair to assume no one, even ritchie could ve replaced bolin, tommy was that phenomenon on his own. tommy and steve happen to have the toughest work with ritchies shadow, but that ghost was mannageable when gillan took over dp so morse didnt have to deal with what tommy went through. and yes, obviously ritchies in the top undisputedly for dp for me. and indeed irreplaceable.

@@HM-gy8xr totally agree, Richie and Jon. The organ is where most of the overdriven, heavyness comes from in Deep Purple, the guitar is actually pretty clean for hard rock. It was a brilliant combo.
Been saying it for years. As a Torontonian, I went there (5 hour drive) 8 years ago. So overrated. Spent more time at Dicks sports than at R&R H.O.F. ...Befor Rush, Kiss, Heart were inducted, acts like Madonna, The Pretenders and Blondie were inducted years befor?????? W.T.F.??????? I have often wondered is it more for the band or for the fans????

Roger glover is one of the fine ones. Very intelligent and very perceptive when it comes to understanding other people. I would personally like to thank him for having enough confidence in himself to navigate his way through so much nonsense of other people and allow his way of writing and playing bass to reach all of us. May YHWH call your name one day in the great book of the heavens so you can play forever and we can become neighbors.
I saw Purple at the Chicago HOB and Roger hung out and talked to me for about forty minutes A hot brunette came up and gave Roger her hotel room key and Roger handed them back to her and said I'm married.Roger asked her if she liked bass players and she said she loved them.Roger told her my friend Wayne is a bass player. She looked me up and down and said no thank you.I was in great shape and had long hair back then.Roger than said "I tried to help out my fellow bass player"
Wonderful to see Roger Glover stand up for Nick Simper. While I, like many, hold Mark II the highest I do like all of Deep Purple. Those three Mark I albums all have strong moments on them and after getting left behind Nick Simper fastly created the band Warhorse which is a band surely worth a listen if you haven't already. Though I'd say Nick Simper is the least famous member of any line-up so he would probably enjoy the evening at the Hall of Fame most of all. Not the end of the world offcurse but Nick Simper and Rod Evans deserve more recognition for their work in the band overall.

Yeah and now Jon Lord is no longer with us there can sadly never be a Mk2 reunion but as Blackmore said it would not be any fun , they came back together 2 times from 1984 to 1993 so yeah everything has been done which needed to be done if that makes sense.

The ever cool, self-effacing, honest, diplomatic gentleman that is Mr Glover... A key foundation stone of DP. Roger described Blackmore down to the last machine head... But did so with wisdom and fondness. EXCELLENT INTERVIEW.

Musicians, in my experience, walk their own direction with awesome talent and gifts as well as serious flaws. Both sides seem to be present in the creative genius that happens if we re fortunate. You don’t get the genius without the flaws and that is ok. The genius overwhelms everything. Blackmore and Glover and Lord and Paice and Gillian (and the others in and out) were just magnificent. There was nothing like them and the power of their work in music made my heart beat with power and grace. We take the bad with the awesome!

Absolutely. I have read Blackmore "disliked" playing rhythm guitar, wanting to just play those smoking solos, so it was Lord's organ that carried that role, made the DP sound what it was. He deserved to be there, and it's ridiculous they fucked around until after his passing to induct the band,

I met Ritchie and some of the other guys in Rainbow when they were having a break on the Gold Coast during their Australian tour, way back when. I think what Roger says is true. Ritchie is a mercurial guy, and has his own particular way of working. Some people, like Cozy Powell, could get around his eccentricities without too much trouble, but they were the exception I think. However, Ritchie came across to my mind as being a little bit insecure in some ways, which is the antithesis of his reputation as a ego-maniac and enfant terrible. He is a complicated personality for sure. But on a personal basis, he's a hell of a nice guy.
The Deep Purple Mach II line up, Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Glover and Gillan? Made about as close to a perfect album w Machine Head. (Space Truckin was not quite up to the rest of the album) But the rest of the album combines rock, blues, classical, progressive, etc….In Rock, Who Do We Think We Are and of course Made In Japan…. The virtuosity of everyone in the band, is still humbling.
I'm glad that Ian Gillan gave a mention to Tommy Bolin on the night in question. He's always said kind things about him even though they were of different eras of the band, and he likes him as a guitarist. I think that had they met they'd have gotten along famously: two Leo's, which explains why Tommy got on so well with Glenn Hughes.
My brother in law ( RiP ) saw Robert Plant and Tommy Bolin hanging out together in a club in the early 70s. Bolin was a mess of a guy but a gifted guitarist
The street I live on goes to Glover Avenue. Glover Avenue is one of the major roads in my town. I purposely always call it Roger Glover Avenue. People either are confused by it or think nothing of it. I have yet for anyone to say, "From Deep Purple?" or "From Rainbow?" One day it'll happen!

Blackmore is always a source of comments, not everyone being sincere and honest like Glover is. in this interview he said Ritchie is more confident as an artist than as a celebrity and I believe this is reality as a whole. Hendrix was said to be furious about fans and managers demanding him to destroy guitars in each show bacause he did it once

I love where Roger talks about Morse joining and how they were back to sharing writing credits and it's so true with DP and many bands, when your forming a song the one may have part of a song and the drummer adds keyboard player adds, etc and all improvisation and is worthy of credit and royalties, The Band was like that but Robbie Robertson took all the credits and royalties, not cool. If you have an acoustic guitar and write a song and you just have that and the words that's all you have, whatever else is created down the road should be given credit.

Great interview with Roger. As a general observation; without naming names, the more personally likeable, agreeable and consistently logical in behaviour an artist appears to be, the less I like their work. The opposite unfortunately also seems to apply. As I will probably never meet any of the people whom I admire as artists, or as people, I don’t worry about it too much, but the theory seems to be confirmed more often than not. If I had to work with them, it would probably be a different story.
The thing I realy love about Purple is that almost all members in this band were and still are acting like gentlemen, it so English. Roger is one of them. He is a nice person and great musician, the reason Ritchie took him in Rainbow was his professionalism I think. Also, guys let speak honestly Purple without Lord and Blackmore is not Purple, may be it is another commercial project whatever, but it is not Deep Purple we know.
Even if Blackmore would have stayed in the band until this days it wouldn't sound anything like the Purple we connect with Blackmore. People change, music change, the energy change when you get older. You don't want to just repeat yourself. But for me, Deep Purple without the sound of a Strat is not the same.

I think band of course did change it's sound , they could wrote some great stuff again with a bit modern sound, but it was still the same great Purple we know. When I was 15, I wrote (through the fan club) to Roger with a question aaking would his butterfly ball album/project be going ahead. The club office was in the Purple records building. I got a letter back from the club (Simon) with a signed piece of paper from Roger enclosed. He thanked me for asking and said he was about to go into the studio to start recording. He didn’t have to do that and of course I was over the moon. Purple are such a great band.

I just saw an interview with David Coverdale in which he said he has no use for any of the guys in Purple except Glenn Hughes. He doesn't talk to any of them and has no plans to. Of course, that's Coverdale so what does that mean.
But there is one person anyway who speaks badly of Roger. And of Ian Paice too for that matter,

Most metal sounds nothing like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy and AC/DC were rock n roll on steroids, but not bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden who are considered metal.

Rock n roll (Chuck Berry/Little Richard) was groove based with clean guitars and you can dance to it, same with disco. You can’t dance to metal. It’s dominated by distorted guitars and often times soulless vocals that sound like the Cookie Monster. Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye weren’t rock n roll but they sound more like it than Metallica. It’s just because hard rock/metal fans think they own the term. As far as pop, the Beatles were the biggest pop band of all time and came straight out of rock n roll.
I met Roger Glover in a small bar in Vermont where they were playing. Blackmore, Glover, pace and Turner. they were taking some time off from recording an album at a local golf club house that they rented for winter. They were all very nice awesome people and I will never forget it.

Jimmy Page, Ed Van Halen, Joe Walsh, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth, and so many more. Blackmore is an ass and he is a second away atr all times of blowing up and throwing a 2 yr old like tantrum. BUT, he is a hell of a wicked player.
I loved Blackmore's talent just as much as any bloke. But his fucked up, egotistical behavior doesn't speak well of the man. I have known many great actors, most of them incredibly nice and easy to work with. But if you think that being a total jerk makes you special, it doesn't, it just makes you a jerk. I worked with William Shatner, and nobody liked him, not even his fellow cast members. Just try working with someone like this. I promise you, you won't like it.
I am SO sick of RR Hall of Fame. This seals the deal. How Deep Purple wouldn't be inducted first eligible year is madness. Smoke On The Water launched a million guitarists; and they were among biggest groups in the world. I was just watching Eddie Van Halen video playing Deep Purple back stage warming up. Purple's 80's comeback album was huge and really proved their worthiness.
They had lots of great songs, not just that. HIghway Star is the coolest!

I don't think Ritchie Blackmore views the RnRHF as a legit thing and he certainly wasn't going to give it "legitimacy" by attending their function.
So many bands and individuals have been excluded, for no valid reason, yeah, that makes sense. It's _not_ a legit thing, not til Grand Funk is inducted...
From what i read he was going to attend if he'd been allowed to play with the band. But Gillan (my favorite rock vocalist of all time who I once met) had no class and nixed that idea. He should've allowed Ritchie to play one song with the band and then one with Morse--you get the idea.

But the band was pleased to see him go. Deep Purple was close to implode, and it took a new guitarplayer to bring back the magic in the band.

Roger has also produced some good band albums. Judas Priest, Nazareth . He's a real pro and a great player

Deep Purple Perfect Strangers Was a Legendary iconic Album and Tour. I'm thrilled to this day that I got to see that tour. It was like seeing Led Zeppelin or Ozzy with Sabbath Etc It felt special and was special.

Despite all the changes throughout the years I still think that the one who’s going to be considered as the original guitarist of the purple will always be Richie Blackmore, I think it was the prime mover of the band a great musician and an epic guitar player that no one will ever be able to replace.
was a wrong move replacing him with tommy bolin... i love him on purple but he did what he could, ritchies departure was fresh back then, so no matter what tommy could ve done, ritchie was massively missed. but if deep purple never had ritchie and had bolin instead, its fair to assume no one, even ritchie could ve replaced bolin, tommy was that phenomenon on his own. tommy and steve happen to have the toughest work with ritchies shadow, but that ghost was mannageable when gillan took over dp so morse didnt have to deal with what tommy went through. and yes, obviously ritchies in the top undisputedly for dp for me. and indeed irreplaceable.

@@HM-gy8xr totally agree, Richie and Jon. The organ is where most of the overdriven, heavyness comes from in Deep Purple, the guitar is actually pretty clean for hard rock. It was a brilliant combo.

Been saying it for years. As a Torontonian, I went there (5 hour drive) 8 years ago. So overrated. Spent more time at Dicks sports than at R&R H.O.F. ...Befor Rush, Kiss, Heart were inducted, acts like Madonna, The Pretenders and Blondie were inducted years befor?????? W.T.F.??????? I have often wondered is it more for the band or for the fans????

I would personally like to thank him for having enough confidence in himself to navigate his way through so much nonsense of other people and allow his way of writing and playing bass to reach all of us. I saw Purple at the Chicago HOB and Roger hung out and talked to me for about forty minutes A hot brunette came up and gave Roger her hotel room key and Roger handed them back to her and said I'm married.Roger asked her if she liked bass players and she said she loved them.Roger told her my friend Wayne is a bass player. She looked me up and down and said no thank you.I was in great shape and had long hair back then.Roger than said "I tried to help out my fellow bass player"

Wonderful to see Roger Glover stand up for Nick Simper. While I, like many, hold Mark II the highest I do like all of Deep Purple. Those three Mark I albums all have strong moments on them and after getting left behind Nick Simper fastly created the band Warhorse which is a band surely worth a listen if you haven't already. Though I'd say Nick Simper is the least famous member of any line-up so he would probably enjoy the evening at the Hall of Fame most of all. Not the end of the world offcurse but Nick Simper and Rod Evans deserve more recognition for their work in the band overall.

DP have always been Lord, Paice and Blackmore. DP ceased to exist in 1993 and definitely in 2002 when Lord left. It is a different band. Facts! 🤟
Yeah and now Jon Lord is no longer with us there can sadly never be a Mk2 reunion but as Blackmore said it would not be any fun , they came back together 2 times from 1984 to 1993 so yeah everything has been done which needed to be done if that makes sense.

Musicians, in my experience, walk their own direction with awesome talent and gifts as well as serious flaws. Both sides seem to be present in the creative genius that happens if we re fortunate. You don’t get the genius without the flaws and that is ok. The genius overwhelms everything. Blackmore and Glover and Lord and Paice and Gillian (and the others in and out) were just magnificent. There was nothing like them and the power of their work in music made my heart beat with power and grace. We take the bad with the awesome!

I met Ritchie and some of the other guys in Rainbow when they were having a break on the Gold Coast during their Australian tour, way back when. I think what Roger says is true. Ritchie is a mercurial guy, and has his own particular way of working. Some people, like Cozy Powell, could get around his eccentricities without too much trouble, but they were the exception I think. However, Ritchie came across to my mind as being a little bit insecure in some ways, which is the antithesis of his reputation as a ego-maniac and enfant terrible. He is a complicated personality for sure. But on a personal basis, he's a hell of a nice guy.

The Deep Purple Mach II line up, Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Glover and Gillan? Made about as close to a perfect album w Machine Head. (Space Truckin was not quite up to the rest of the album) But the rest of the album combines rock, blues, classical, progressive, etc….In Rock, Who Do We Think We Are and of course Made In Japan…. The virtuosity of everyone in the band, is still humbling.
I'm glad that Ian Gillan gave a mention to Tommy Bolin on the night in question.
He's always said kind things about him even though they were of different eras of the band, and he likes him as a guitarist.
I think that had they met they'd have gotten along famously: two Leo's, which explains why Tommy got on so well with Glenn Hughes.
My brother in law ( RiP ) saw Robert Plant and Tommy Bolin hanging out together in a club in the early 70s. Bolin was a mess of a guy but a gifted guitarist

The street I live on goes to Glover Avenue. Glover Avenue is one of the major roads in my town. I purposely always call it Roger Glover Avenue. People either are confused by it or think nothing of it. I have yet for anyone to say, "From Deep Purple?" or "From Rainbow?" One day it'll happen!
Nick Simper did Warhorse after he left Deep Purple, they put out two albums out on Vertigo, they did a good version of Vanda and Young's St Louis
The first Warhorse album is the better one. Roger Glover has 4 solo albums as well, my fave is THE MASK.

Roger was a nice guy when I met him back in 1981, he was the only one that would give me an autograph.
Blackmore is always a source of comments, not everyone being sincere and honest like Glover is. in this interview he said Ritchie is more confident as an artist than as a celebrity and I believe this is reality as a whole. Hendrix was said to be furious about fans and managers demanding him to destroy guitars in each show bacause he did it once

I love where Roger talks about Morse joining and how they were back to sharing writing credits and it's so true with DP and many bands, when your forming a song the one may have part of a song and the drummer adds keyboard player adds, etc and all improvisation and is worthy of credit and royalties, The Band was like that but Robbie Robertson took all the credits and royalties, not cool. If you have an acoustic guitar and write a song and you just have that and the words that's all you have, whatever else is created down the road should be given credit.
Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian never let Richies mysterious personality bother them......and he knew that.....so he didn't mess with them.

I guess Roger lasted longer than any other musician did with Ritchie so you can see the respect there. I'm sure Ritchie respects him too

As a general observation; without naming names, the more personally likeable, agreeable and consistently logical in behaviour an artist appears to be, the less I like their work.
The opposite unfortunately also seems to apply.
As I will probably never meet any of the people whom I admire as artists, or as people, I don’t worry about it too much, but the theory seems to be confirmed more often than not.
If I had to work with them, it would probably be a different story.

The thing I realy love about Purple is that almost all members in this band were and still are acting like gentlemen, it so English. Roger is one of them. He is a nice person and great musician, the reason Ritchie took him in Rainbow was his professionalism I think. Also, guys let speak honestly Purple without Lord and Blackmore is not Purple, may be it is another commercial project whatever, but it is not Deep Purple we know.

Even if Blackmore would have stayed in the band until this days it wouldn't sound anything like the Purple we connect with Blackmore. People change, music change, the energy change when you get older. You don't want to just repeat yourself.
But for me, Deep Purple without the sound of a Strat is not the same.

@@tommylarsson2025 I didn't agree with statement that if Ritchie's was still in the band till today Purple's sound will not be the same as we know. I think band of course did change it's sound , they could wrote some great stuff again with a bit modern sound, but it was still the same great Purple we know. Morse is great player, but his tone and sound is too modern and did change band a lot, for some people it is okay, for some not.

Blackmore fue muy grande, creo un estilo, influyó en muchos músicos, pero no evolucionó, quiso adaptarse al mercado americano y no le hizo muy feliz, no evolucionó, se estanco, y tampoco es malo del todo, el es feliz con su proyecto junto a Candice, es feliz siendo un músico folk a su manera, seguirá siendo una leyenda, el es fiel a sí mismo.
Honestamente nunca pude entender del todo a Ritchie Blackmore, estoy de acuerdo con él en el sentido de que una vez que has hecho toda la música que querías hacer no queda nada más que repetirse y él no quería repetirse (muchas grandes bandas se han acabado por ese mismo motivo: Los Beatles, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, que no hicieron nuevas canciones por ese motivo). Otros como Yes entraron en la música comercial en busca de no repetirse. Sin embargo su alta odiosidad, no solamente hacía la gente que le ha acompañado en sus bandas hasta el día de hoy, si no también con el público que acudía masivamente a verlos, le valió finalmente SER ECHADO DE DEEP PURPLE y cuando Ritchie insinuó que le gustaría hacer un recital con la banda Ian Paice (el Purple callado) habló y explicó que ellos no quieren trabajar más con él por todos los motivos ya expresados: Odioso sin causa, siempre enojado hasta con el público, ect, ect. Ronnie James Dio dijo que él aprendió de Blackmore más que de ningún otro, no solamente todo lo que hay que hacer... Si no también LO QUE UN MÚSICO JAMÁS EN LA VIDA DEBE HACER si quiere seguir siendo querido y vigente. Su enorme e indiscutible talento le salvó de terminar en el completo olvido. Quiero finalizar diciendo que durante una de sus giras los Deep Purple en Inglaterra salieron a celebrar a un Bar y... Allí (por esas casualidades de la vida) se encontraron con Ritchie Blackmore, se reunieron, celebraron, bebieron y compartieron juntos toda la noche igual que en los viejos buenos tiempos. Después de eso Ritchie se despidió y se fue solo. Ritchie Rocks!

When I was 15, I wrote (through the fan club) to Roger with a question aaking would his butterfly ball album/project be going ahead.
The club office was in the Purple records building. I got a letter back from the club (Simon) with a signed piece of paper from Roger enclosed. He thanked me for asking and said he was about to go into the studio to start recording. He didn’t have to do that and of course I was over the moon. Purple are such a great band.

The butterfly ball had some fantastic songs! I especially like David Coverdale and The bass player I forgot his name. With the great great voice!
