- A while back I made a file recovery video and in that one I've used a program named TestDisk. Although many of you guys find it helpful, I kinda skipped over some basics. And, it raised some questions. To adress them and further explain the data recovery process, I decide to create this video. So I hope you find it helpful. Also, if you want to add or correct something, you can mention it in the comments down below. I really appreciate it!

This is the best video, thank you so much. Worked on Mac OS X Monterey. I used the command 'sudo' before pasting the photorec pathway which then prompted me to type in my computer login password. ie, in my situation I ended into terminal: "sudo /Users/Yourusername/Downloads/testdisk-7.2-WIP/photorec" Hope this helps someone.
helped me, thanks!
wow thank you so much for this. I was having trouble seeing any of my drives, specifically my SD card. Now I'm able to see them. Many thanks!!! I have a M1 Pro 14"
Hey @danob4261 I tried using sudo before or no sudo commmand at all and it didn't work. Without SUDO it says: "No Such File or Directory". And when I added SUDO before the pathway location it said: "Command not found" after asking for my password. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much!! I was going insane with the "no such file o directory" message...
This finally got my hard drive to show up
Thank you so much for this, Mr. Random Generator. Very easy to understand and I like the logical progression of information (from explaining how data recovery works to how to use the application.)
Dude you are actually a life saver, thanks so much for making this 🙏
Concise, complete, and informative, this is how it should be done!
Thank You for taking the time to make this.
You helped me recover 3000 of my lost 4500+ files. (At this point I do know some if not all of the missing were doubles so a way higher percentage than it looks). Thank you so much. I'm sharing this channel on my ig because I don't know how else to show my appreciation 😅
You are awesome in both explanations and quietness. Thanks broo 🙏🏽♥️!
Awsome , it works great , Thanks a lot , keep the good work.
Thanks for the help! Great video.
Amazing, thank you so much, I didn't understand anything after downloading the software and this video saved me and my pictures. YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH, I THOUGH I LOST ALL OF MY STUDIES FILES BUT THANK FULLY I NEVER GIVE UP AND FOUND UR RUclips CHANNEL. IM SO HAPPY BECAUSE I FOUND TEST DISK AND YOUR GUIDE VIDEO AND YOU MY FRIEND JUST GOT ANOTHER SUBSCRIBER :D
That made my day, glad it worked out!
@@TheGitGuild Hello! Thanks so much for this video. Really nice!
Could you help me out. I want to scan a 4TB disk for a single month of pictures that i've deleted (don't know when, it was by mistake). Can I set it to look only for that specific month? I've selected the full disk but my 1TB laptop can't handle the space of all those recovered files. Or is there a way to preview/select the results before storing them in a folder?
Wow, thanks so much. Worked perfectly even for someone like me who has never even opened terminal!
Thank you so very much. You probably made this video to help people find beloved images/files that were accidentally lost, but I am using this to help recover evidence of a crime committed against me. Long story short, I was the victim of road rage and the perpetrator ripped out my dash cam and deleted the files showing his reckless driving. If I am able to recover these, I will have irrefutable evidence of his crimes. I hope I am successful!
I've never even thought about such use case. Thanks for sharing your story. Hope it helps, wish you the best!
HTF did they rip it out and just stood there and deleted it and you let this happen? Were you being a Mook or just a Tool watching all this?? Or did they rip it out and stole it but were nice and returned it without their portion on the video? This situation literally made no sense and caused brain hurted!
Heyy there's this hiren cd that I just discovered that chatgpt told me i basically you'll have to flash the hiren cd iso into a 4gb usb and then you can log into win11 (not your system) which has all data recovery softwares
I don’t know if I left a comment already but I’m just so grateful to you creating this video.
Hi, I want to recover .braw files on my Mac, but the file type is not in the file type list, what can I do?
Thank you for explaining how to recover images. It helped me recover images from an old SD card.
Glad to hear that it helped you out!
How to add custom file extensions (i.e .con, .ai, etc.) when using PhotoRec/TestDisk?
Are there any additional steps for video files from the Sony A7III? (MP4 I believe.) And there is no danger of overwriting the desktop/Mac OS files by saving the recovery to the desktop?
I have 2 partition in my laptop. Accidentally One drive F format while I was in windows . I use teskdisk in windows to recover.. But It shows 0 file found. Can I use testdisk through Linux to get back those drive's file?? please help me
I did all the steps but unfortunately it says 0 files recovered 😔
Is there any way to look at only a certain file in a certain ssd or do we need to look through the whole ssd?
Thank you for making such a detailed video on the topic. very straight forward and precise. But I was having a question that whether this program can recover an .iso file ?
Thank you! Big help!
I can't find heic on the list? will it work on heic iphone pics?

I need to recover an mp4 file, but there is no option for that specific file type, only mp3 and mpeg. Could you add mp4 in the next update? Thanks
wow, you saved my data thank you so much champ
what should I do if it says no disk found? I did it as sudo.
I'm having trouble unzipping Photorec on my Mac; it says: "There was a problem extracting the contents of "testdisk-7.2-
WIP.mac_intel_x86_64.tar.bz2": File is not fully supported" Am I doing something wrong?
Can someone please help me understand how to add my own file extensions to photorec?
this is great dude tysm
It doesn't work, it says ,,bad CPU type in executable''
how can i fix it?
Can I recover a file I also deleted from my a PC bin.
Hi, after copying the photorec path to terminal, it doesn't show my drive and it says "Some disks won't appear unless you're root user." I already gave the full access permission to the terminal however I get the same response. Do you have any suggestion? Thanks
Is it possible to recover image data such as created/modified date?
I am getting "photorec" cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified/ macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware in 2023 on macOS Ventura 13.4 do you have a solution for this
HELP... I keep getting "Bad CPU type in executable"... Tried adding sudo before and still won't work. Tried everything listed in these comments.... Can anyone help?
for mp4 do i choose mpg format?
I'm trying to recover a .rar file with photos and videos of a lifetime, it has +/- 50gb, however, every time I try (selecting only .rar) the program starts writing a giant file.
The first time I tried it, I only had 80gb free on the second hard drive I arranged for it, I ended up running out of space. I cleaned the HD and got 202GB of space, tried again and the program created a .rar with more than 202GB and failed again.
The problem is that it only creates 1 giant .rar and when you run out of space you lose all progress, and you don't even have access to the .rar to know if what you want is in it
Does anyone know what I can do?
Sorry for the poor english. I'm from Brazil.
Will this restore a corrupted open office calc file?
Does testdrive only work for recovering files from external drives?...As I'd like to recover a file from my internal drive if possible
Will it delete or mess with the drive if they're files in it?
how do i make it recover one folder?
I get "Bad CPU type in executable" in my mac terminal:(
Keep getting error bad cpu type in executable?
Is it recover exact file or decreases the file size ? Please reply
Thank you for your manual, very clear and concise. I got a message when I stopped recording a 30 minute video...""Writing to memory card was not completed successfully, recover data?...I said yes. And then execute? It could damage the data added or edited with another device...and I execute "" With photorec and your method I have only been able to recover videos of a small weight of approximately 100KB each, and they appear black and without audio...the recording codec was XAVC HS 4:2:0 10bit. Any idea what I can do? Thank you very much, it is a very important video that I would need to recover. Any light you can send me is welcome...but I think I lost the video... :(
This was very helpful? I know it's been a while but if you could explain how to add your own custom file extensions on photorec it would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for this well made and instructive video
Anyone knows how to use on a Mac on 2022? Currently not working on version 12.4
when I use it in mac it says: No hard disk found
You need to be root to use PhotoRec.
thank you for the tutorial, however i got a problem on windows: when i have to choose my USB drive i can't find one with the same size as the USB drive i need, so i don't know which choose.
Can you not use the original USB drive?
Merci my friend !
It says "No such file or directory" when i paste the path
I have a question. Why in the disk selection window I do not see any other than the main one. Although I have a memory card inserted?
I'm having the same issue :(
Thanks for the video. My MacBook is no longer working, but I want to keep the photos however I only have access to my PC ( Windows 10), if I got the hard drive out of the MacBook, and connect it to my PC it won’t show up due to the different formats, using this application will the hard drive pop up so I can get the photos off the hard drive. OR could I use a virtual machine with MacOS and follow these same steps in this video? If anyone knows anything please let me know as there’s years and years of memories and photos on that hard drive and I was stupid enough not to use iCloud or back anything up. Thanks for your time.
Or simply enough, if I use virtual box and use MacOS would the VM detect the hard drive which from my old MacBook even though it’s been connect to my Windows 10 PC?
Hi! When I copy the path into the terminal and put my password in I get 'command not found' and can't move on from that. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks!
same here
Did you ever figure this out?
Hi ... can anyone help me? I can't seem to run the photorec on Mac Terminal ... It keeps saying " Bad CPU type in executable". How do I get around it? Thanks
I encountered the same problem. If you had already found the solution you mind share it here. Thanks in advance dude.
thank you for this. I tried to move a folder from my phone's microsd card to my computer and it didn't work by connecting my phone to my pc so I took out my microsd card and used an adapter and did it that way. But for some reason when I put my microsd card back in my phone told me to format it. So I plugged it back into my pc and somehow it got corrupted cause now my pc wants to format it so I have to now use this program to mostly restore all my photos from my sd card. I don't know why it happened, I even ejected the thing from within windows after first getting that folder off it. At least I hope all my photos are safe.
I'm on a Mac and when I try using exactly the same instructions within Terminal, it doesn't even run/open PhotoRec. When I copy the pathway just as shown and paste it, it says: "No such file or directory", which is bizarre once I actually have the Mac file downloaded from the official site sitting in a normal folder in my computer. Anyone have a suggestions? Thanks!
same problem here, were you able to fix it?
This was really helpful thank you very much. However, there’s something I regret about finding delete photos on my parents camera. Oh god I need a brainwash because what I just witness is something indelible.
Actually works, but still trying to see if the files that were actually deleted will show up as mostly files that I've never deleted are showing up.
@Chloe Price yeah I would like an answer for that since it seems like this program could of worked had I lost my files on a flash drive with nothing else on it but those files.
Hi thanks for the video. But I couldn't find HEIC file type in formats section. Pls help
I don't find it too... does anyone have a solution?
It's because that HEIC files format are represented by MPG

@@anthonyrcoons you never commented on anything ever. Don’t trust this lady!! She’s not a real “anthony”!
@@hardtymz2517 I think cause I posted a link in my comment it got deleted :(
I can't get past opening terminal as it keeps saying I need to root to use photorec. Mac m1.
TestDisk and PhotoRec work, but if you're trying to recover a whole HDD/SSD then be prepared to spend a long long time for the process to not only recover the files but to also searching through the jumble of files that are recovered, you basically lose all your original file names and a load of useless files are also returned. I only recovered the data from my broken HDD over 2 days and then seeing the mess of unnamed files returned I didn't want to spend more time trying to sort out the mess, so I returned to trying to rebuild my HDD that went into a RAW state, the worst state possible. Luckily I managed to rebuild my HDD, complete with folder structure and files. The time I spent on recovering the data was just a backup in case I couldn't get my HDD out of the RAW state.
hello! it says "access denied" when I paste the pathname, can you please help me?
zsh: permission denied:
check out my comment
Does it work on Mac OS 13?
Is this really free or gonna pull us with some subscription options?
It almost worked. Some of the recovered files aren’t how they used to be.
omg you named your thumb drive "Dumb Drive" xD
doesn't work UGH.. all I get is bad CPU type in executable
Mine says the same thing.
type in the terminal, "sudo photorec"(without the quotation marks) it should bypass the cpu issue.
@@giyu-sama Yes this worked!
@@giyu-sama mine doesn't work :( i put sudo photorec, and then put my password and this shows: sudo: photorec: command not found. Help!
@@giyu-sama Incidentally, this is what I had to do to actually see my SD card, opening the file normally did not show it.
please respond
