Used to get tinned curries from Lidl in the old days. They were so good I used to buy them by the tray - 15 tins at a time. I think I was somewhat addicted to the taste. I think they were using Brazillian Beef (or in those days it could just as easily have been Horsemeat if you remember that particular food scandal). I haven't been in Lidl for years though and I didn't find them when I was last in otherwise I would have bought a shedload. That M&S curry is ludicrously expensive for what you are getting. I agree with you though, you can tart up a cheap curry with a bit of Chilli or some bits and bobs.
I buy the Lidls canned hot curry and add other spices and condiments to create a better taste and heat. Works for me, but it is obviously using more to get the heat and taste. Great vid again mate, all the best.
Nice review Gareth! As for reheating in the microwave, I have read recently that most of us (myself included) use full power when heating up or reheating dishes. Proper way, from the article, is to lower the power, but cook longer, as it gently heats the food you are cooking. You won't overcook food. I have tried this method and it does work, but I have a Panasonic microwave for quite a number of years and it works quite well!
Great video Garth, the Markies one looks better but the price is ridiculous. For me it would have to be the Lidl one with personal extra stuff chucked in to bulk it out
'Tuning' any store bought curry with a few basic ingredients is a bit of an art. Bags of cooked chicken strips are very cheap too. There is no justification for the M&S curry price but Lidl should also spend just a bit more on ingredients.
Ooh M and S food.... Treat... Got vouchers for M and S as a gift. We were going on self catering holiday (2 dogs) so to make up for no cordon blue cooking, we shopped with the vouchers and our food was tasty, even in comparison to the named brands in supermarkets. Occasionally I go in and bring home something 'nice', but as you say prices are so much higher but there are times when quality outshines the cost... I keep a store cupboard of tins (rural living, power outages, snowed in etc) and my other half is happy with our local supermarket's own brands but 400g doesn't go far between two people!!!
I worked in a chicken factory in Anglesey for four orrible months, the chicken are all the same .aldi tesco the lot ,we had to change from blue ppe to red for m + s .., same chickens go in everything people ,🃏🐇🕳️🙏
Thanks for taking the time to do these Gareth, always informative, and a little funny ;-) I WOULD BUY A CHEAP ONE AND JAZZ IT UP WITH MY OWN INGREDIENTS YOU CANNOT HELP BEING CAVALIER WHEN COOKING ..
Great comparison review Gaz I can’t believe the price of the M&S tinned curry you could put a extra chicken breast in and some spices in the Lidl one and still be cheaper and anything in a can should be cheap 👏👏👍👍
You can always pimp it up! Gareth, you crack me up! 😅 Can't buy Heinz Baked beans here in Russia now but I found some Polish baked beans... Took a lot of extra ingredients to pimp them up! As for curries.... I'm teaching myself to cook them from scratch and so far .... Better than any takeaway back home in Wales! 🏴
I would use the Lidl one as a kind of curry sauce, and chuck in some leftover meat or vegetables, and maybe some spices - depends on the flavour - and it would be all right for the price. There is no way it would serve two on its own, or even with rice or bread, unless I did that, though. It is good to get a comparison, so thanks for that, but the M&S one is too dear for me. Congratulations on the Worcestershire sauce - the elocutions lessons are paying off! 😜
honestly, you'd have them with rice anyway, so some chilli flakes and maybe some frozen veg tossed into the curry, and the Lidl one would make a great meal at a fraction of the price, or I could spend like £3 more than the M&S curry at my local takeaway, and get more curry, more chicken, and rice with it, either option would be better than paying that much for a tinned M&S curry 😂
Hi Gareth, I like the M & S tinned curries. Have you tried M & S chilled curries from the fridge/chillers, these can also be frozen once you get them home. pierce the film and put them in the microwave for a few minutes, served with Uncle Bens rice, quicker and cheaper than a take away. Enjoying the vlogs
Asda do their own version of tinned curries. They have Korma, Tikka and Jalfrezi. I like them with chips or a jacket potato. A nice quick easy meal. When comparing to the Aldi/Lidl versions, I found Princes were similar. Though, the Aldi/Lidl ones have certainly cut back on the amount of chicken you get in them. Cheaper, yes, but less product!!
Hi Gareth .thanks for another brill review .normally the lidl range can.hold its own against the big guns but im afraid on this occasion they have been outgunned by M +S..going by looks ,id say its definitely worth paying the extra money for that...keep up the spot on work .Best wishes from Scotland .
What I do with tinned chicken curry to pad it out is fry some onions and mushrooms in a wok, then I put sultanas and extra chicken in it as well, then I microwave it,then I serve it with pea and pepper rice, yummy xx thank you for the video
Great video, could really see what you get in both cans. For me they are both overpriced, the cheaper can looked more like soup and 4.25 for a tinned Curry is extortionate no matter how nice it is. I got a cheap tinned curry from Aldi last year and it was revolting so if I had to get a tinned one I would sadly pay the extra to get decent quality. Have a nice week thumbs 👍
The M&S one would definitely be off my list and not just for price, I can't stand sweet curries but as you say we all have our own tastes. Shame the Lidl one was so lacking in chicken pieces but then again I can get a Lidl Madras ready meal for £2.49 which includes rice and only takes about 5 mins in the microwave. By the way, that Newgate brand is common for Lidl, I buy the baked beans for 42p a can and they're really nice. I bought a can of Newgate mushy peas the other day and that will be a true test - I love Batchelor's mushy peas but if the Newgate ones come close I'll stick with them.
That price difference is huge! I think I’d buy a single chicken breast, chop it up, add it to the Lidl tin curry and spice it up. It would probably still work out cheaper than the m&s one. Cheers Gaz👍🏻
My granddaughters love mac n cheese and cheese toasties. When I was in Iceland the other day, I spotted Cathedral City man n cheese toasties, so bought two for £7 for them to try. Wish I hadn't! It be great if you could do a review, I'd love your opinion. Thank you 😊

Almost double the protein in the M&S. That is something I consider most important nutritionally especially for those still growing . It’s why poverty in childhood is a huge factor in health in adulthood. Price can’t be the only consideration. See what you think about Bisto gravy granules @ £4 for 300g vs Goldenfry gravy granules @ £1.10 for 300g, both from Asda. I think the Goldenfry are much better!
With all the kits nowadays it's easy to make a passable curry. That being said that M&S curry would be great when you have a hangover and can't be bothered 😂
What you find is all the basic source comes from one distributor so if you look at the addresses on the back, they’re not far away from each other. I used to work in a bakery in Avonmouth they covered all of the supermarkets, same bread, just a different sleeve. Same with wisemen diaries, same cow, different label from the cow.
Gareth regardless of the size of the cans. They are both the exact same weight. Therefore the difference between the amount of chicken will always be %6. Even if both cans weighed a tonne. The difference between the 2 will remain %6 mate.
Woos-ter-shear sauce. I think I'd blow the budget and go with the M&S curry. It may be all the money, but bang for buck it has more flavour, chicken and better consistency. Depends on how much cash you can spare. I think I might opt for a bag of chicken strips, a few veg', a curry sauce sachet & some extra spices. That way I could probably make several times the quantity for the price of the M&S tin & have the benefit of tailoring them to my taste too. It would probably be nutritionally superior too by the time I had put the veg in.
Hi Gareth, If people are happy paying for the Lidl’s curry good on them & as you said nothing wrong with it jazz it up a bit & it will be a lovely meal thanks for trying the 2 tins 👍✨🙂
Well Gareth, what can one say? Tinned curry 😢No rice,no naan,no poppadoms, no chutney. So basically no real need for the price ,it's only a base for add ons. Sadly Gareth I'm gonna be rude, crude about the Lidl one. I sincerely, honestly thought that " curry " had already passed through the digestive track of someone or something 😢😮 You pays yer money and you takes yer choice. Again we thank you for your superb efforts at bringing us a look at some grim items, and one or two good ones. Carry on with the good work 😂Allthe very best wishes to you and your family ❤Allan&Family
I actually had the mild version of the Lidl curry yesterday. It was reminscent of the 'curry like' dish we were served in the school refectory! Unless it starts looking like WW3 is going to kick off I doubt I'll be buying it again!
As you say Gareth, what's hot to one person would be medium to another and any curry benefits from adding cooked veg, the sauce gives plain veg lovely flavour. Good comparison tho and not much meat in either one. Regards Nanny Gail.
I'm kind of proud to add tinned curries to the list of things that I have never consumed in my 58+ years (along with Pot Noodles and the Fillet o Fish). But actually that M&S one doesn't look that bad.
I shop lidl and Aldi, Lidl is better for pasties (3 in a packet ones) but Aldi (Bramwells) hot chicken curry is the better of the two curries. Nicer taste and mouth feel,
Hi dude , I've seen a review of that cheap lidl Newgate curry , about 2 weeks ago .. its pritty good for the price . Again I think its a case of paying for the name . To be honest I think the likes of aldi and lidl offer great value in these days of over priced name brands . But , as I side note I bought today in lidl a pork n ham tin of ham , think you did a review of it a couple of weeks ago .. looking forward to it in a nice warm baguette salad . Carry on with the down to earth great vids m8 . God bless.
With shop-bought Curry I need to throw some Mr Naga in to tart it up a big. I've Veggie and saw a Paneer one in Iceland but it was £4 odd and a bit pricey so need to give it a shot. Gonna get that Beef one you really liked from Asda for my Dad to try.
good vlog but have to remember that the mechanical process does not measure every portion of chicken pieces go in each can so this will be very random with some cans both LIDL and M&S, will have sometimes bid significant differences in chicken portions so maybe have a few more cans of both to compare even a test comparison between 3 cans of LIDL or M&S to see how these values vary, but great vlog again
I used to by Sainsbury’s can curry. Cook it slow for a good 20 mins and break the chicken up. Pour on top of crispy fries One of my favourite dinners in winter that was quick. Buttered bread on the side Banging
Totally agree with pimping the spice level. For bulking out I use canned Chick Peas, they go great in curry and still come in well under the M&S price. Subjectively I think Lidl are losing the plot, nothing I can put my finger on but their quality and value feels well adrift of Aldi these days.
Don't think I've ever even looked at curry in a can, but over 4 quid! For that price it had to be better. Though the Lidl one was much better nutritionally I couldn't help but notice (been watching too much Michael Mosley) 😂
Where im from u still said it wrong mate lol but we all say it different and that dont mean anyone is right or wrong. My mother used to call it rusty sauce. Far easier to say lol thanks for video gaz x
I've tried the Asda korma curry , think you done them ages ago , they taste alright if you like a mild curry. Think they used to be about 1.50 Inna tin. And I got one of those micro packet rice to go with it.
I remember buying Asda tinned curry 🍛 years ago for my sons 😩not for me but the lads loved it 🤣🤣🤣👍🏻love your videos Gaz 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻M&S omg 😨 over £4 for tinned curry🤦🏼♀️xxx
I'd like to recommend the Tesco Beef Curry 392g for about £2.40 normally. I do eat the Newgate chicken sometimes but think the taste isn't absorbed by the meat. I nuke them for 3 minutes and let them cool whilst I nuke some 2 minute rice. My naan bread warms in the toaster in the same 2 minutes as the rice, which is precision meal prep.
Sainsbury's have a budget frozen ready meal range for 80p. its crazy to think that you can get 5 whole curry meals for the price of one tinned M&S curry
The thing I like about M&S food is that unless the whole thing is not to your taste you will actually not end up throwing much away. It may be a lot more expensive, but in this taste test the expression on Gareth's face said it all, it was enjoyable and a real experience of good curry. If you only eat the Lidl one, and he was searching for chicken in it, you probably will think it is by far a better buy for a chicken curry, but let's face it, you get what you pay for.
You could stick a diced chicken breast in the Lidi one and still have change over the M&S. But a £5 a can I'd be down the local takeaway for the fresh stuff, M&S is too expensive for a can of anything 😅
I would buy a hot chicken thigh from the deli and add it to the Lidl one to increase the meat content. As for taste, you get what you pay for. The recipe for the M&S one seems to have more depth of flavour. If you reduce the water content in the lidl one, I wonder if it would be any better. Enjoy your curry and chips. What no rice?! Wowsers
That M&S price is horrendous Gareth!! It would definitely be cheaper to make your own and that way add your own Spice level, you could buy 2 of the Lidl version that just needs a bit more spice added and still be cheaper!
You should do a comparison between two shop brought microwave curries. I've had ones from both the Co-Op and Iceland and I've found that the Co-Op ones are more hotter than the Iceland ones with the latter being also a little too oily for my liking.
I actually shrieked out when you said the M&S price. But one could see the difference as soon as you poured the curries into the bowls. One could see very little chicken in the Lidl version. However, with a side of rice, both would be tasty enough for the price. Lidl shoppers are hardly going to buy the Newgate AND the M&S.
Gareth, for the actual chicken content by weight, M&S is 41% of a 400g tin, so 164g chicken and the LIDL 35% of 400g is 140g of chicken. So the difference is 24g.
That looks great garreth loooking forward to trying it I'd like to recommend m&s fiery hot chicken tikka masala a test of your heat tolerance enjoy thank you.
I have had the Lidl chicken curry before it's okay to have in for a quick meal but I stopped buying it because it really jumped up in price it only used to be 99p a tin. I have also tried the M & S one I seem to recall I won a mini food hamper and that was in there that was okay as well but I wouldn't pay £4.25 a tin for it you can get a 400 gram curry out of the chilled cabinet in the supermarket for less money and they are using much better quality chicken. All these tinned chicken product use old hens that have finished there egg laying careers although perfectly edible they are not the best quality chicken.
You could of bought the Lidl curry and two fresh chicken breasts and still be under the M&S price. As for the chicken content, M&S has 164 grams per tin and Lidl has 140 grams per tin, you asked for the nerdy facts, Gareth, so I gave them to you 😃 Great review mate, take care...
I tend to find the chicken in cans to be rubbery. Obviously it's not fresh. The Lidl 'hot' curry has a mild tingle. Not enough to bring out a sweat. But, if someone's on a budget, it's absolutely fine. Next time I stray into M&S I can see a can slipping into my basket. It's there - it must be tried 😊
Thanks for video appreciate it. Some info for you. What you are not told is the fact that the chicken has a preservative injected into it which box the chicken out. it is a mixture from numerous substances. Shall we say that are in the water that are injected into the chicken itself prior before production process. This is a natural practice within the industry. You’ll also find the same situation when it comes to bacon.. when you place a slice of bacon into the pan, you will see certain residues coming from the bacon. Some of which are. is an industry trick is the fact that you are paying for the weight of the produce. Unfortunately what you’ve got to understand is food products are QA tested very highly. But what you’ve got to understand also is the standard is also done as bulk. When you come to taste it it’s done as bulk so it’s not necessary. The amount that specified on the can that is the reason why you get percentages. Not just the multitude of chicken, it’s what the taste of the product agrees with yourself as a consumer and the end confirmed product. Most manufactures have been told to cut down the salts and sugars, so you will find in the foreseeable future. They will be gradually trimmed down in other informative products just to give you an insight what’s coming in the foreseeable future. They will be very safe so don’t shy from that. I hope you do read this and take some insight and write. Thanks again for the video look after your friends and family and bye for now.

They still do them in Lidl, but I buy the mild ones, and they are not as good as they used to be,thinner consistancy.

I sincerely, honestly thought that " curry " had already passed through the digestive track of someone or something 😢😮 You pays yer money and you takes yer choice. Again we thank you for your superb efforts at bringing us a look at some grim items, and one or two good ones. Carry on with the good work 😂Allthe very best wishes to you and your family ❤Allan&Family
cheers Allan
You brandished that napkin like a magician! 😄
Haha 👍
I actually had the mild version of the Lidl curry yesterday. It was reminscent of the 'curry like' dish we were served in the school refectory! Unless it starts looking like WW3 is going to kick off I doubt I'll be buying it again!
The M&S one looked great,As for the cheaper one id still buy it but probably add a bit of hot curry powder into it just to spice it up a bit more. :)
Hi Gareth Brilliant Comparison,
cheers David.
As you say Gareth, what's hot to one person would be medium to another and any curry benefits from adding cooked veg, the sauce gives plain veg lovely flavour. Good comparison tho and not much meat in either one. Regards Nanny Gail.
thanks
Too much slippage juice on the Lidl curry. Only tins of chicken curry I have bought are made by Princes and they were not too shabby. Good review Gaz.
cheers pal
I'm kind of proud to add tinned curries to the list of things that I have never consumed in my 58+ years (along with Pot Noodles and the Fillet o Fish). But actually that M&S one doesn't look that bad.
Garth your culinary skills are to die for 😂
🤣
I shop lidl and Aldi, Lidl is better for pasties (3 in a packet ones) but Aldi (Bramwells) hot chicken curry is the better of the two curries. Nicer taste and mouth feel,
Thanks for sharing!!
Tesco tinned beef curry used to be SUPERB..sadly now..massive price hike and the meat has disappeared...expensive sauce is all it is now..Pity.
M&S, very dear. I don't often buy canned Curries, but if I do, add extra spices and some mash 👍
Used to buy the M&S one every week but not since they started using chicken from Brazil. Come on M&S !
.......shocking price for M&S, but it did look good. Why is it they all fall short of the chilli heat though? Great comparison video.😎🍻
Cheers Jonathan
Hi dude , I've seen a review of that cheap lidl Newgate curry , about 2 weeks ago .. its pritty good for the price . Again I think its a case of paying for the name . To be honest I think the likes of aldi and lidl offer great value in these days of over priced name brands . But , as I side note I bought today in lidl a pork n ham tin of ham , think you did a review of it a couple of weeks ago .. looking forward to it in a nice warm baguette salad . Carry on with the down to earth great vids m8 . God bless.
Cheers pal, all the best
Hi Gareth, can't go wrong with a curry. I suppose the two curries are good in there own right. What you need now is some rice and chips, Enjoy mate🤤😋👍
They’re never going to be spicy are they Gaz 😂
Too many softies out there 😂😂
Cheers for the review 👍🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧
With shop-bought Curry I need to throw some Mr Naga in to tart it up a big. I've Veggie and saw a Paneer one in Iceland but it was £4 odd and a bit pricey so need to give it a shot. Gonna get that Beef one you really liked from Asda for my Dad to try.
Mr Naga is great isnt it
Those Italpizzas from Iceland are on offer at the moment. Buy 2 pizzas for £7 and get a free Ben and jerrys. Great review btw
thanks
good vlog but have to remember that the mechanical process does not measure every portion of chicken pieces go in each can so this will be very random with some cans both LIDL and M&S, will have sometimes bid significant differences in chicken portions so maybe have a few more cans of both to compare even a test comparison between 3 cans of LIDL or M&S to see how these values vary, but great vlog again
cheers Jack
The M&S curry is lovely on toast!!😋 just a bit expensive but its a nice quick lunch!😁
I used to by Sainsbury’s can curry. Cook it slow for a good 20 mins and break the chicken up.
Pour on top of crispy fries
One of my favourite dinners in winter that was quick.
Buttered bread on the side
Banging
Glad you got it right in the end! It's simply pronounced - Worcestershire Sauce.
Cheers Paul
If they are 400g cans, then Lidl has 140g of chicken and M&S contains 164g. Difference is 24g, or less than one ounce.
This is interesting I recently purchased some Iceland boxed dinners in my opinion they tasted better than the brand ones good video as usual
Cheers Andrew
I remember buying Asda tinned curry 🍛 years ago for my sons 😩not for me but the lads loved it 🤣🤣🤣👍🏻love your videos Gaz 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻M&S omg 😨 over £4 for tinned curry🤦🏼♀️xxx
cheers Shirley xx
I'd like to recommend the Tesco Beef Curry 392g for about £2.40 normally. I do eat the Newgate chicken sometimes but think the taste isn't absorbed by the meat. I nuke them for 3 minutes and let them cool whilst I nuke some 2 minute rice. My naan bread warms in the toaster in the same 2 minutes as the rice, which is precision meal prep.
Trouble with tinned chicken is that they always use breast for some reason, and that’s a dreadful meat for cooking at high temp for canning
Sainsbury's have a budget frozen ready meal range for 80p. its crazy to think that you can get 5 whole curry meals for the price of one tinned M&S curry
I do like my M&S food and this last few years have used them as my total weekly supermarket shop, and am never disappointed with anything there 😊
I know it doesn't sound nice but me and my family scrunch a bag or two of ready salted crisps over a curry , it's lovely.
Cheers Penny
You could stick a diced chicken breast in the Lidi one and still have change over the M&S. But a £5 a can I'd be down the local takeaway for the fresh stuff, M&S is too expensive for a can of anything 😅
Where do you get a chicken curry for £5? In London you are lucky to get change out of a tenner, if not £15.
I spat out my tea when I heard the M&S price😮
I love a coconut based curry too G! I dunno about paying over four pound for a curry in a can. It looked decent though 😊
Wowsers
Double carbs lol
That M&S price is horrendous Gareth!! It would definitely be cheaper to make your own and that way add your own Spice level, you could buy 2 of the Lidl version that just needs a bit more spice added and still be cheaper!
My morrisons sauce is simply called Worcester Sauce !!!! no need for the Shire it seems 🤪
Great review mate that's a lot of money for a tin curry 😂
You should do a comparison between two shop brought microwave curries. I've had ones from both the Co-Op and Iceland and I've found that the Co-Op ones are more hotter than the Iceland ones with the latter being also a little too oily for my liking.
Great idea!
I think that I would compensate for there being less chicken in the Lidl option by buying two tins and still saving 67p.
Gareth, for the actual chicken content by weight, M&S is 41% of a 400g tin, so 164g chicken and the LIDL 35% of 400g is 140g of chicken. So the difference is 24g.
Thank you
That looks great garreth loooking forward to trying it I'd like to recommend m&s fiery hot chicken tikka masala a test of your heat tolerance enjoy thank you.
You're welcome
I remember a time when you could get a tin of curry, a bag of rice and a big bag of frozen chips and a loaf of bread for £1.50 😱😱😱
I have had the Lidl chicken curry before it's okay to have in for a quick meal but I stopped buying it because it really jumped up in price it only used to be 99p a tin.
As for the chicken content, M&S has 164 grams per tin and Lidl has 140 grams per tin, you asked for the nerdy facts, Gareth, so I gave them to you 😃 Great review mate, take care...
you too Joe
I tend to find the chicken in cans to be rubbery. Obviously it's not fresh.
The Lidl 'hot' curry has a mild tingle. Not enough to bring out a sweat.
But, if someone's on a budget, it's absolutely fine. Next time I stray into M&S I can see a can slipping into my basket. It's there - it must be tried 😊
Good vid, have you ever compared Branson pickle and cheaper brands?
cheers, im not sure, got a feeling I have. Will be in comparison playlist.
Are you ok? You make about as much sense as a Womble on a shrooms OD. Take ya time kid and evaluate what you've scribed before hitting post next time.
Never tried tinned curry. I love Iceland's 'Extra Hot Tikka Masala' from the freezer.
