    Thanks for the review. I do like both Stella and Primal brands. But Primal has helped my Cane Corso. He has a lot of food allergies like sweet potatoes, peas, chicken, beef, and the list goes on. His digestion system is sensitive. He had a very lose stool and his ears were red. I stopped the kibble after trying- Natures logic, Essence, and tried Primal Venison frozen patties alone since he can have all the ingredients listed. His stool is back to normal no more Diarrhea and ears are clearing up. His coat is super soft. The only issue is it's breaking the bank. It's really expensive to have him on the primal raw w/o half kibble!! Thanks for sharing the additional raw foods that align with Primal. I will look into Kure Pet food and Answers Pet food.

    I’m in the camp who prefers things as natural as possible. But I rotate between several raw brands since everyone uses different produce to balance their foods and different proteins to give my two as much variety as possible. We also use raw goats milk, home made bone broth, and green juju produce blends regularly. My dogs definitely eat better than I do most days

    I got into freeze-dried raw several years ago when my previous dog was diagnosed with cancer. It was at the beginning of Covid, and the stores meat departments were bare, so I couldn't make my own. We used the freeze-dried raw beef medallions from Visionary Pet Foods. After she passed away, we got two little miniature dachshund puppies, and they started out on kibble, (which was what the breeder fed them) but both had digestive issues that didn't resolve until I put them on Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried raw Perfectly Puppy food. We got a third puppy when our first two were six months old, so we've continued the Perfectly Puppy for quite some time. They ate that until they were full-grown, and then we switched them over to Stella & Chewy's adult freeze-dried raw foods. But due to shortages and things being out of stock, I had to look around to find other brands. We tried a variety of different brands, but either my dogs didn't like them, or I didn't like them for various reasons. So, we finally settled on using Primal off and on for the last couple years, interspersed with Rawbble, which does have a lot of added nutrients, but is 98% meat, organ and bone, and Vital Essentials, which uses no synthetic nutrients or vegetables so has a very low carbohydrate level. I like Rawbble and Vital Essentials because they come in small pieces that are more bite-sized for my small dogs so I don't have to handle the food as much, and they have a higher meat content. Stella & Chewy's also has Lil' Bites, but my dogs didn't like any of their flavors for some reason.
    But now I'm faced with rising pet food prices that no longer fit into my budget, and I've been forced to try to find ways to make feeding my dogs less expensively. Raw from the grocery store seems to always make my dogs sick, so I've started doing homecooked for part of their food. I've been doing half Vital Essentials freeze-dried raw, and half lightly cooked using base mixes from The Honest Kitchen and Dr. Harveys, but my dogs have hated every base mix I've tried. So I finally started a subscription to The Farmer's Dog DIY Nutrient Mix so that I can use their recipes to make homemade, and have control over the quality of the food. My dogs like fresh cooked much better than the freeze-dried vegetables in the base mixes. I'm using Vital Essentials as half the meal because that way my dogs are still getting some raw, but it also contains organ meats that I don't have access to in the stores, and is all meat, with no vegetables. That helps to balance the high amount of vegetables in The Farmer's Dog DIY recipes so that they're getting a higher protein content. So far, they're doing great although I'm no longer doing 100% raw with them. When I told our holistic vet what I was feeding them, her face lit up and she praised me for it and said that my dogs were exceptionally healthy. So, I must be doing something right. I just wish the costs hadn't gone up so much. I've been able to cut my pet food budget by 25% by doing a half and half mix, but it is a lot of work to do homemade. And I can't afford to use The Farmer's Dog ready-made food because it would exceed my budget, too.

    Alright this might be an odd request. Can you please make a video explaining the differences between foods geared toward small breed dogs, versus just regular kibble not geared toward small or large breeds. And another video explaining the differences between kibbles that say they're for each life stage(so puppy, adult and senior). Thanks!

    • @romans116blessed5
      @romans116blessed5 Год назад +3

      That would be an interesting topic. Other than the smaller size of the kibble, I've noticed the claim is that smaller dogs require more protein than larger breeds, due to their metabolism. Pretty sure that is rubbish. When preparing raw meals, (I prepare large batches, and then divide into portions to freeze), I use the same ingredients, and feed amount, according to size and activity level.

    • @Meow_dasKatze
      @Meow_dasKatze Год назад +5

      As a short answer: as far as I know different foods for different breeds are not really different and not necessary, but different foods for different life stages actually have a benefit, because puppies in growth need different nurtrients than seniors with joint problems

    • @LilyShimizu
      @LilyShimizu Год назад +3

      I think I know an answer for the life stages question. Puppies need DHA (Omegas) to support heathy brain growth, which is what “puppy” and “all life stages” foods should both meet the requirement for. Senior formulations tend to be lower in both protein and fat percentages to account for an aging body and a reduced activity level, and I believe they may also include glocosamine for aging joint health? I’m not sure how true that last part is among all senior formulas, I just know for sure those two percentages are always different.

    We are a Stella and Chewy family. For the past 9
    Months my American Bulldog was on natural balance due to needing a low fat diet to help him loose weight for his tplo surgery and due to stomach infections. We just switched him back to S and C. He had been on it for 2 yrs prior to diet. We like Stella and Chewy over Primal because twice he has gotten stomach infections while have the Primal Pattie’s as a topper. The vet thinks the Primal is the problem. So when we got ready to switch him back to a better dog food we went with S and C. My boy has allergies to poultry. Natural balance while a good food and helped my boy loose weight, it’s been a constant problem with ear infections. It’s not the grains but vet thinks it’s the added yeast in the food. We are glad to be part of Stella and Chewy. We feed the beef with ancient grains. I would love to try the raw coated kibble one but it’s super hard to find in Alaska.

    I have been adding stella & chewy's freeze dried raw patties to my dog's kibble for a few months now, I wish I could afford to feed her more of those than I do, but I just can't afford it currently lol. She eats raw coated kibble with 1 patty per meal, and I have been adding either powdered bone broth or powdered goats milk (well, mixed in to water of course) to add moisture to her meals. It is affordable, and she loves it. She has always just picked at her food, I know kibble isn't very exciting, but adding these couple of things has really been getting her to eat more. :) I really appreciate all of the info you share in your videos, thank you so much!

    Actually more of a Stella and Chewy camp, though I have seen Primal frozen nuggets for cats, and they seemed convenient. She's crazy about them for a week, hence we are rotating between canned, fresh, and frozen, which seems to suit her. When I go out of town she eats kibble, I'm not so gung ho, but it does work for me. Trying to figure out ways to add more moisture when I do this. She's quite a fussy cat, so I'm pretty happy when she likes something.

    If you are going to feed a combo of commercially prepared frozen raw and kibble, be sure to separate them as meals. Raw and kibble digest at different rates. Raw digesting faster, so this can potentially make your dog sick. We've been through it.
    Our raw is from Tollden Farms (Ontario Canada) They do a frozen raw patti format a 3lb package that has 1/4 lb patties (suitable sizes for puppies, smaller dogs and cats) and an 8 lb package with 1/2 lb pattis - meat and veg or meat and botanical mixes
    My pup is 60lbs. She gets 3 meals a day. 2 half pound patties, 1 at breakfast and 1 at dinner. Then 1 cup of kibble (typically Acana) at bedtime.
    I switch between a variety of the proteins offered in both the vegetable and botanical for the dog and in the botanical for the cats.
    My dog is a healthy 2-1/2 year old and everyone comments how soft her fur is when they pet her.

    Thinking about switching to this brand because it’s single protein foods, and no chicken at all, which will be great for when I introduce a new puppy, as most puppy food is chicken based, and I know my current dog would eat it.
    I’m also hoping to rotate proteins and include raw toppers for the new puppy. We do raw toppings for current dog as well.

    I rotate all foods I feed my dogs and cats. I am doing my best to keep my cats off kibble all together, but with 2 large dogs I do have to feed mostly kibble to them. I rotate brands and proteins and will top with raw or give raw for 1 meal all week.

      I have had all 3 of my cats living together 21 years old!! Vets couldn't believe 3 cats at the same time 21 years old. I never ever fed kibble!!! Kibble causes cancer!!! Feed wet food or cook for them. I made huge batches of cooked pork, peas and brown rice ratioed out! I had the pharmacist compound their taurine and choline and sprinkled on top and mixed into food. You can freeze too.

I am figuring out the senior part at the moment!

    Thank you for this comparison video! I was at my wit's end with one of my dogs, a schipperke/min pin mix. He has always had a sensitive tummy/metabolism, and now that he's about 13 years old, he has reactions to food that will crop up suddenly, even if he was able to eat that same food before. I finally settled on Orijen but he started coughing at night and then upchucking his dinner. Switched him back to home food but he couldn't seem to take that anymore. Tried Farmer's Dog and he seemed miserable. He could not keep Stella and chewy's treats down, so finally, after researching, got some Primal to try. He still wasn't quite 100% but I add one or two cubes of frozen squash with every meal, and now he's back to his happy self. I took him to the vet a couple of times and they couldn't find anything wrong. I suspect he might have a collapsing trachea too, but am not sure about that. And so, he's been a patient little man, putting up with all kinds of food experimentation, happily eating whatever I put in front of him. But the Primal has proven to be a winner for him, and yes it's quite expensive, but I'm lucky to be able to afford it for him and my little chihuahua mix (knock on wood). Thanks for letting me vent, and thank you for this valuable info.

    I have a really picky dog that gets bored of food quickly, he hates kibble but eats it with toppers. So we added some Stella and cheesy freeze dried raw into his food and sometimes he eats it sometimes he does,most times if he does eat it it’s not the whole entire bowl, and he’s just never exited for his food to come, can you give me any suggestions for a good food I can give to him that’ll make him exited and eat the whole thing? He’s a 7 month old puppy and he’s only 10 pounds,he doesn’t get bigger. Thank you!

    I like the idea of avoiding synthetic vitamins and minerals. However, my concern about Primal is that I think they achieve this by using mostly heart and liver as the muscle meat portion of their food. Ruminant livers like beef are extremely high in copper and too much copper can cause liver problems in dogs. Poultry livers are lower in copper so rotating the formulas for ruminant animals with poultry may help avoid excessive copper levels which can definitely cause liver damage in dogs and some breeds are more susceptible to this problem than others. Liver from ruminant animals should not make up more than two percent of the diet. I make my own raw dog food so I know exactly what is in it which I realize may not be for everyone.

      Cats can be tricky to switch food on. Mixing it little by little into wet food is the way to go, and you may consider letting the raw get to room temp before trying to feed it and see if that helps!
