He didn't say "What a way to make lots of money" or "What a way to be world famous" he said "What a way to spend the day". That's how you know he really loved this artform. He dedicated his life to it....even when there was sacrifice. May we all figure out the way to spend our limited time on this earth that makes us the happiest.
He was so pure in his delivery, in his reflection, in his piano playing & singing throughout this song & the entirety of Tick…tick, boom! So raw & authentic. I LOVE him! Such a major inspiration to me
Strangely, hearing his less developed singing voice than Raúl Esparza and Andrew Garfield makes the song hurt more. Its an emotionally heartbreaking song to remember a life long friendship, and because of that he pretty it up. He doesnt care about hitting notes or proper dynamics or any singing stuff, just the fact hes saying goodbye to one of his last friendships. Its so raw in a way that increases that feeling of "this is a song dedicated to my friend who im doomed to lose." (Also this isnt to say hes a *bad* singer by any means, because not at all, his voice is just less developed)
I never thought that I would ever hear any of his demos (other than the one of 'Boho Days' on the Tick Tick, BOOM! soundtrack) so Thank you for posting this.
Oh my gosh - that verse in the middle about how time is short! The movie put it into dialogue and left it out of the song, but it's so powerful to learn that it was in the original. He had a premonition.
Interesting this version ends with a question (Am I cut out to spend my time this way?) instead of the definitive declaration it is in the musical/film (I'm gonna spend my time this way), probably makes sense since this originally came at the middle of the rock monologue but in the musical it is the culmination of Jon's character arc
ah. I liked how they put "come to your senses" on the last part at the soundtrack. apparently it wasn't meant to be like that (of course it was probably for storytelling)
Thought I'd copy and paste this comment I wrote on another video as it adds a lot of interesting context to the use of Come To Your Senses in the modern stage play and film of Tick Tick Boom: So CTYS was written in 1985 for the very first draft of Superbia. PWH was in 1988. When you go and look at Tick Tick Boom as performed by Jonathan, you'll notice one key difference in the song "Why?", instead of singing Come to Your Senses- he sings a bit of LCD Readout followed by a small snippet of Too Cold to Care. This is likely because LCD Readout was the hardest song to write for the show, and Too Cold to Care got revised a lot throughout the show's production, which lends to the next line of "Over and over and over till I get it right". CTYS on the other hand he effectively only wrote once. Also, it was cut from the show in 1987, and TTB takes place in 1988. The reason for this is because after Jonathan's passing in 1996 the material for TTB was revised to better fit a narrative structure- and while Jonathan's monologues always talked about the Playwright's Horizons workshop in the past tense (just as an experience, and an overall not super great one due to factors outside of anyone's immediate control), part of that revising effort built the story of TTB around the PWH workshop instead. When Victoria Leacock, a friend of Jonathan (and awesome person in her own right!) revised the show, she wanted to include a song from Superbia and ultimately chose CTYS for two reasons: 1. It fit better with the overall narrative of the revised TTB 2. At the time, HBO had gotten the rights to make an animated adaptation of Superbia, and in all likelihood it would've used one of the later scripts of the show, from which CTYS had long been dropped but songs like LCD Readout and I Won't Close My Eyes were still very much a part of. Just in case it was adapted, it was felt that CTYS likely wouldn't be a part of that adaptation and would be a better fit for TTB.
The fact that they cut the bridge in the movie offended me into all caps. The bridge is what reaches out and sucker-punches you right in the heart with a torrent of raw emotion. I get that Andrew Garfield probably couldn't sing it, but come on... even if he'd just yelled it over the music that would have been better than cutting it.
@@shalomwilsonn2853 actually, ttb was made SPECIFICALLY for himself, he wanted to make a musical that was so cheap there was absolutely no way it couldn't be performed lol. Of course the demos were probably for the band that was with him on stage but the singing was all him(and like, one background singer)

Does anybody know who this is about, because in the movie it obviously about Michael his best friend, but his best friend in real life was a man called Matt O’grady I believe
The song is about Matt but in the musical Tik Tik Boom, he refers to him as “Michael” (characters name in the musical) hope this helps :) presumably for confidentiality
Can anybody tell me the exact lyrics at 3:58? And the explanation? I don't know much about the musical, but I'm a big fan of this song. I know that in the movie, that part is another song's title. Is it same with this?
The first part is 'liquid crystal digital readout', which is a part of the song Lcd Readout from Larson's unproduced musical Superbia. I'm pretty sure the lyrics of the second part are 'I'm gonna be cold', but I unfortunately don't know which song that is from.
I cried only thrice while watching a movie. 1. Niklaus Mikaelson saying his goodbyes to his family ( The Originals). 2. The end of Tick Tick Boom. 3. The death of Allison Argent ( Crystal Reed) in Teen Wolf series.

Your comment mde me cry. It's so true.
This is the most devastatingly beautiful tribute to a friendship ever written. I heard it and cried for 3 days. God bless you, Jonathan Larson.

Honestly one of the best songs in tick tick Boom. It means so much
The little differences between the movie and the original really make this version unique in its own way.

The new movie made me cry and this is just beautiful, I'm glad that he Will never be forgotten

This is one of my favorite songs in Tick, Tick... Boom! Thanks so much for posting!!
4:08 the power in his voice😭

thank you Jonathan Larson!
If you know music modes, you will notice the power of his voice when it turns to lydian
Crying shame that they cut that bit from the movie.
At the end of its movie. Got me ugly cry😭
Love you Jonathan Larson.I am from India ❤️❤️
Love this
Andrew Garfield as Jonathan Larson in the Tick, Tick…Boom! Movie made me cry so hard😭 hearing this song genuinely makes me a sad kind of happy…

So hauntingly beautiful…
Forgive me if im wrong but did I just hear bohemian rhapsody at 3:20

What a talent. Now he's gone -- how sad.
He really wasn't the best singer
But he made up by how passionate voice and how fricking GOOD THE SONGS TUNE IS

But I said, "No one cares"

Three o'clock sun had made the grass hay
I thought,

I made a vow
I wonder now

@@teeletars9750if I had to guess it’s from the Superbia song “Too Cold to Care”, which is currently not publicly available
