You can always tell a great lesson when you learn something new, the instructions are clear, the voice tone is mellow and easy on the ears, and you can't wait to get off ya stool and grab your guitar!
Especially this: and you can't wait to get off ya stool and grab your guitar!
"the most human noise you can possibly make with a guitar" -that's beautiful man
Because when you sing you slide into the notes. That's not really his quote I've heard that many times
I have been playng and teaching for 35yrs.......you are indeed the DUDE!!!!
Thank you my friend.
XX
THE best beginner slide lesson I've seen... and I've watched a lot.
You've got a clean sweet sound. Keep em coming bro.
Starting with low D string. 1st,3rd,6th strings are tuned to D / 2nd,5th tuned to A / 4th tuned to F# / 75435 for open D / Standard tuning is 55545
Nice Lesson thanks Matt. However for some who might be new to open tunings, you called the tuning a bit wrong. You tuning is DADF#AD but you called it as DADF#BA. Thanks for the lesson though, the L sahpe is very useful.
Great video delivered with confidence and wit from a guy who knows his stuff.
One small slip that could cause confusion, as DENSAYO says, D major tuning should be D (6th string) A, D, Fsharp, A, D (1st string)
Love that Chess Analogy.
first time i ever loved an ovation guitar. This guy is awesome, great player and great teacher which is a combination you rarely see.
I have 3 guitars that are set up for slide playing only 2 electrics & 1 acoustic (chrome body resonator) they are in various tunings (G,D & E) I need to get that resonator out and play some more but the thing weighs more than my non-weight relieved Les Pauls !
Very good demonstration .
Love the vid, just bought a slide and you're really helping me along, can't wait for the nice weather when I can sit outside playing guitar and drinking whiskey.
and? did you manage it?
you have improved my slide playing 100 %. Thank you sir. Keep up the great work.
my only beef with the video is in open D tuning you have the 2nd string tuned down to B ( should be A) and the 1st string tuned to A ( should be D )
Best guitar lesson I have seen yet on youtube, and your simple methodof using the L shape blows away the books I had bought too.
intelligent and warm approach to this great instrument, Matt's style of playing and instruction is amazing
This guy is a great teacher! Great style and warmth!
The blues is in your voice, listen for yourself. Thank you for this 2 part video. Its really going to help me. You are so amazing.. thx u again. I wish you were my teacher.
Just found this. I had seen Sonny Landreth and was inspired to try slide....again. I search and found Matts video. The BEST guitar instruction I have seen on the net. Just great stuff that is for players. Thank you Matt! I can fake some slide at last!
This man's voice is gold
Hi Matt.........I've been playing slide for 2 days...........your lessons one and two are inspirational........I'm just loving the open tuning.........just bought your book...........cool man...........and the harmonized major scale is just fab............I must admit I've been playing guitar for 41 years which is rather odd..........just like you since I'm only 27..................I wish..........just retired (early 55).............back to enjoying life.........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..............I've never used alternate tuning's before.........apart from a few zep numbers....cool
"Cause you gotta love vibrato" - fantastic man!
Matt Smith is one of the most talented musicians I have ever met ! . . . and he is a very impressive vocalist as well !
You sir are a cool rockin dude. Thanks for the lessons
Wonderful lesson thank you
fantastic! learned more in 5 minutes than any other video out there. thank you so much
I almost had to just turn the video off, when you said you had been playing slid guitar since you were a kid,but I didn't,and you don't go slow, but I got more out of ur video than a bunch of other ones, and ur the Real deal,u know what the f#@k ur talking about, and ur humble, funny s.o.b
!!!! Thanks
Wonderful, I love his delivery. Makes it very easy to follow.
Excellent lesson. Very easy to listen to and informative. Thank you. One question, how was it working on the Sopranos series?
Matt Smith, Thank You so much for this lesson it is great!
I'm going to go ahead and watch this video about 100 times. Thank you for it! You explain things at my speed, brother.
Fantastic! I can't wait to practice. Thanks Matt.
Finally...a great teacher, neither too slow nor too fast.
Dude!! I love you man! lol thanks for posting this...I watched it twice and now I can play with a slide thanks to your simple instructions. Oh it might take me a few more vids to be as good as you, haha, but I'm having fun with it. Thanks Matt!
Fuckin A. You just made my night Matt. Keep Rockin'
Great lesson. Thanks.
Wow Matt you autographed my slide guitar book an the sims music guitar clinic still rocken dude ! You are the most awesome! glad i found this.
Holy crap... I was taught by this guy last year at a blues guitar course!
Needless to say, he was hilarious.
Best slide lesson ever
You are a great teacher.
I would love to just sit on the porch with this guy.
that L shape trick is killer. thank you! i will not forget that card trick ever!
Excellent lesson! Thank you, sir !!
Thank you! Really helped me advance a little. Great job!
Thanks for that lesson you made it so easy for me !
Sounds great
Great lesson! I really enjoyed this.
Thank you very helpful you're the man!
I have been playing for 39 years, self taught, and this scares me a whole lot. I have my action too close for slide, and it always sounds like a mess when I try slide.
GREAT JOB MATT!! YOU BREAK IT DOWN NICELY
Great lesson!!!!
Such a cool man tks

Just found this, man this is cool stuff.
Great lesson!
Great! Thanks
Thank you.
Great teacher
This guy is fucking awesome
Thanks for the upload
good vid easy to follow
Open D Major: D A D F# A D
Thank you did he just say the wrong thing?
coattail yes
@@mathiaskolding3241 Thanks I was thinking the same thing.
Good job
I'm not a guitar player......but I greatly admire those who can.........is that a black matted ovation? Never seen one before.
It is a Black Ovation Elite
The chord progression you taught left me singing ''there's a red house of yonder babe!''
Man he gets me every time on the tuning, 1st string is D and 2nd string is A, not A and B like he says. This is the 3rd time I have tuned to what he said and not what he does.. :)
Calpantera Camaro right on bro!
I caught that and had to play it back to make sure I heard him right. That's a critical error! but I still like the guy.
Great lesson
perfect lesson!
Thanks for the info ! sweet !!!
Great lesson...how do I stop the ringing when I move from one string to another? .....I mean ..do I mute with right hand?...thanks ian(England)
Hi matt could you do a lesson on mark knopflers mighty man ...thanks
I've got a question: Did you raised the action on your guitar? And if, how?
Some players will play slide with higher action. This isn't a question that is easily answered. The best solution is to see a qualified tech and have them address your needs
"The second string is tuned down to B" - it's already at B - you mean tuned down to A.
"The first string is tuned down to A" - you couldn't tune an E string down to A - you mean down to D.
I'm surprised if nobody has noticed this, and that you haven't added a correction?
I´we being beggin my friends, thats for shure!
Thanks Matt!!
Was slide guitar first? Or was the slide developed so that people could play sort of the way people play lap steel/pedal steel guitars?
Nice T-shirt. I love Antone’s.
Hello Matt, love your tutorial on Slide Guitar, Is there a DVD I can buy with more lessons by you on Slide Guitar Thanks for the
time you gave to read my message look forward to hearing from You. Great stuff Matt
Leslie - he has a new site called www.sixstringranch.com/ - check out his latest there!
Great lesson! I find it really difficult to mute de strings. Hope practice will make it easy someday! =)
It’s not an American style islanders had been using broken bottles that’s where the blues men brought it back from
love it!
Is there any special tuning for this?
nice!
Hell I know Matt as a producer didn't know he played slide guitar
Please use a dot marker inlay guitar
first time i watched these video's there were 4000 views....... looks like a lot of people have caught on to the magic of Matt :0)
In the beginning he says the that first string is tuned down to a. I don't believe this is correct, it should be tuned down only a single step to d. The note he plays is a d as well, so I believe it was a slip of the tongue.
4:38 haha yes indeed!
mtm guitar?
#2:47 hahaha.."when you play slide guitar you have infinite possibilities to go out of tune "...well said :)
So that's how they do it first time I seen this
hound dog taylor did not use his extra finger he used his pinky +daddariostrings
Is that a stagg guitar ?
you mean second string tuned down to “A” not “B"
Can like this twice
Nice to see an Ovation guitar.
that's a truly american imitation of the hawaiian style
damn his voice!?
Dat bass voice doe
je ne savais pas que Carlos avait joué de la guitare...
Like if this is one of the 5 best lessons on YT.
"You have infinite possibilities for being out of tune" I like this guy
Very helpful!
--Keep the slide parallel
--L-shaped movements
--Vibrato only up to the note, not above it
All these were great to hear!
