I'm a bit late to the party, but happy to have discovered this review. Columbo is one of my favorite re-watchable television shows. I recently moved to Japan, so I'm hoping to find this series in-store or on sale, through Amazon, during a JP national holiday. Thank you for the review, I feel confident purchasing it soon!
With Blu-Ray, North America and Japan are both "Region A" code, so Blu-Ray discs made in Japan will work on a USA player. But Japan and USA are different regional codes for DVD discs, so a DVD made in Japan will not play on a USA machine. I don't know why they made different region codes for each format.
Since you have the Japanese 1080i Blu-ray set of Columbo as I do, I’d be VERY curious to get your take on the upcoming 1080p newly restored Kino Lorber release. I’d love to see a side by side comparison on your channel. Also, if you hear any details about the French Blu-ray Columbo box set that will be released on Dec 5th according to Amazon France, I’m curious to know if that is the same restoration being released by Kino or if they did a different restoration altogether.
Plus, only Netflix gives you Dolby Digital, and no streaming gives you higher quality sound like DTS-HD. Further, you never truly own the streaming product even if purchased. Agree with you big time on this. Insight into why Columbo not distributed to this day in USA? The show is extremely popular, much more than most TV series emerging today in Blu-Ray.
@InSearchofPhysicalMedia, are English captions/subs available on this set? If so, do they reflect the spoken dialog? I have some non-US discs with subs that merely translate the foreign dialog, which often differs from the spoken words.
Thank you for this review! I was very insecure about buying this box and this really helps my decision. I have a question though about the languages it'll play. Can you tell me if it has the option of playing the episodes in German or only with German subtitles? I ask because I used to watch Columbo with my german parents and they wouldn't be able to enjoy it as much, if it was only in English or Japanese. Chears mate! I'll definitely be watching more of your videos now that I found them. ❤
Nice review! I just joined Amazon Japan a few days ago, and was delighted to see this set. However, it is almost 30,000 Yen currently, which is close to $400 Canadian, plus whatever it would be on top of that, including tax and duty. I'm also mainly just interested in all the Columbo movies, having seen all the regular shows prior so many times.Still, if it was $200 (Canadian), I'd probably buy the set. One of the best movies I've ever seen in my life is the nine-hour Japanese movie, 'The Human Condition', which I'd also love to get on blu-ray, but it seems to be currently unavailable.
The price hasn’t been too bad lately there is a link I have posted in the description section under the Columbo video it was on sale and a lot lower cost these last 2 weeks during Black Friday and cyber Monday than what’s it’s been for a while, hope this helps, please make sure to SUBSCRIBE

Thanks to your channel I now own Columbo&Hogan's heroes on Bluray and they look outstanding.. Again thank you for the Reviews. Also wanted to add That The New Hawaii Five-O TV show on Blu-Ray that was only released on dvd after season three in the US is available in germany. with all seasons so far on Blu-Ray and they all work with no special player needed English menus/Audio all works perfect in the US. so you might want to add that to your reviews... since not everyone researches these things. if you like the show of course.
I appreciate the kind word it means a lot. Also I already own the Hawaii five 0 Blu rays from Germany hopefully in the future I will be able to do a review on those as well. I have some other new and exciting stuff coming up soon so make sure to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE. THANKS
I haven't seen the Hawaii Five O reboot and don't ever plan to since I detest reboots and they screwed up MacGarret's character. But I hope we get a Blu Ray of the REAL Five 0 soon.
Thx for an excellent review. Being a big Columbo fan I'll definitely get the Japanese boxset. What's your opinion on The Rockford Files? I have been trying to do some research and it seems that only a mediocre (at best) Blu-ray version from Mill Creek Entertainment exists with the only decent exception being Season 1 released by Fabulous Films. Any luck finding the complete series + movies in true Blu-ray quality?
I appreciate the kind words. To try and answer your question the Rockford files by mill creek is so far the only complete remastered 1080p Blu ray set I have been able to find, as far as its picture quality I will try to do a review on it hopefully in a while but for now it’s not bad so I bought a copy to support mill creek releasing these titles and I would suggest you do as well because companies are struggling with sales for these older shows being released on Blu ray. So if we want companies to keep releasing shows like this to Blu ray we need to support each release. It looks hands down wayyy better than the dvd releases so I am thankful for that and the fabulous films season 1 release is region locked and doesn’t look that much better than mill creeks. Hope this helps please make sure to SUBSCRIBE & SHARE THESE VIDEOS thanks.
@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia I've bought a few from Mill Creek as well, Knight Rider & Quantum Leap. They are not bad. I'm not crazy about the packaging because I don't like how they stack the discs on top of each other, and the cardboard boxes are cheap, but I do support them and would buy from them again because like you said at least they are willing to put this stuff out on Blu Ray in the USA for us.

@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia I subscribed when I watched video. I watched entire video and I saw 16/9 but I saw it on smartphone and I thought maybe it is pillarbox plus in Amazon link maybe other one than you linked is aspect ratio 4/3. Maybe some day I'll buy it when I will have some extra money. I'm also fan remastered series and movies. Most of them I watch on TV. I wish all remastered series had some comparisons screenshots them we would know aspect ratio but in many cases there are no screenshots. What really make me mad is that when they change aspect ratio in many cases they don't use whole width of frame then we see less of picture. Greetings from Poland.
I have this, and love the set! Though I must admit I threw out the script and episode guide because I can't read Japanese. Some people might find that nuts, but it was just the discs I really wanted anyway.
Greetings, and thanks for uploading this video for those of us who are fans of physical media and also huge fans of Columbo. Your video was instrumental in my purchasing the expensive Blu Ray version of the entire boxed set. I purchased the Blu Rays from Amazon, and am enjoying them immensely, specially during these lock~down quarantine days. That being said I have a question regarding the Etude In Black episode. In my box set I find both versions of this episode, which is great, but the shorter version is only available in what appears to be a blown up 'wide screen' version. It doesn't seem to be available in what I'm sure would be the original 4:3 aspect ratio. The video fills the entire screen, which it should not and the images appear distorted by having them stretch to fill the entire frame. None of the early episodes appear this way. Only when Columbo began its reboot in it's second life do we find some widescreen episodes. I don't read Japanese but I have tried every combination on the menu to try to get the video to be at 4:3 but to no avail. The longer version of Etude In Black is shown in its original 4:3 aspect ratio. I have googled this and searched the internet(s) everywhere without finding anyone who can address this question. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong. Or perhaps this is the only version available in Blu Ray? Also, Etude In Black in the shorter version appears to be the only episode to include the beautiful NBC Mystery Movie intro with the haunting music by Quincy Jones. It, too, alas, is distorted by being stretched out into 'widescreen' mode.
Thanks for the nice words, to answer your question the best I can it would seem the shorter version of the episode plays that way because that is what they were given from universal studios and the better looking original master they had was of the longer extended episode, so I would just watch the longer extended version instead. I Hope this help you out, please make sure to SUBSCRIBE & SHARE THESE VIDEOS. Thanks
@@InSearchofPhysicalMedia Greetings, it turned out to be a simple error in a setting for my blu-ray player. For some reason the only episode that appeared stretched out was that particular version of Etude In Black. So, all is good. Thanks for the reply.
I was coming back to find it. I can’t stand that this still is not been released in the USA. I can’t pay $300. Thinking about caving and just getting the DVD boxset. It’s only around $50 which is a steal so if the Blu-ray’s do come out I am not like a to bad to upgrade later.
Prices for Blu rays/DVDs tend to be much higher in Japan and physical media sales have so far remained more stable there, so there is more incentive for studios to put extra effort into releasing properties that were popular in Japan.
@@Desslar - But the hard work is already done, the remastering. All they need to do is have their art department redo the packaging and booklets. It's annoying as hell in this day and age.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH I agree completely, but it seems in the U.S. market the studios are focused on getting revenue from streaming services, and not so much from physical media. Also, Universal Japan may not want Japanese consumers to be able to import cheaper U.S. editions of the set.

Well I'll be damned! (re: my previous note), I just went ahead, and decided to try ordering it..... and it went through! I don't know why Amazon Japan's customer service told me they could not ship it internationally! Strange!

I see you have 'King of Queens' on blu ray in the background. I have the whole series on DVD, and it's a bit of a mess, plus all the discs were stacked. (I ended up buying a bunch of those skinny, clear disc cases, it was so bad!) Just wondering, is the quality good on King of Queens- blu ray? Thanks. I'll subscribe.
The set is for the Japanese market so the obvious sites in Japan are one place (Amazon japan etc) alternatively your local eBay but that might be more expensive. All the best
If you watched my video I explain where to buy them and that it is a region free or region unlocked Blu Ray Set, so that means it plays with no problems at all on all regular Blu Ray players.
All Japanese Blurays play in Region 1A Last month I bought the Japanese Import of the Arrowverse Crossover Event "Crisis On The Infinite Earths" . A single disc that plays all 5 parts from Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow and it plays great in my blu-ray player.
@@hhdddgg6198 I'm in the UK was planning on using them on my xbox one x. Might just wait a few months see if they release them in our region. I know in OZ they have upto season 2 just hope they do all of them here. The price is steep tho for the set but nice.
The box says nothing about region I think. They play perfectly on my uk ps4. I bought mine about 4 years ago from Amazon Jp which is probably the cheapest place to get it. It's a good set I've been learning Japanese a number of years so I get my money's worth from it (improving listening and reading subtitles). No harm waiting but they may never come out since this set is nearly 9? years old now. Who knows though :) some episodes have been shown on itv hd in the past

I will probably never own this, because of reason of principle and technicality. First off, it's done in 1080i60. The source has been telecined to an interlaced format. Absolute stupidity. In essence you get a 540p picture during motion, and you can also forget about being able to play it in a native 24p framerate. There will always be 3:2 juddering unless you rip the discs and re-encode them with some inverse 3:2 processing. And the second reason is the audio. Every episode has at least three 448 kbps stereo Dolby Digital tracks. One English, two Japanese, and sometimes another English commentary track. Half of the series is in mono. They could have used PCM for it. Mono PCM is only 768 kbps. Stereo is 1,536 kbps. Assuming 16 bit. Anything more than 16 bit is pointless for ANY era of audio. But for poop and laughter, we should agree that 16 bits is plenty for this old material. If I am watching something foreign, I don't want English audio. I want the original audio and to read subtitles. So if I was making the discs, I would have went with a single PCM track. Works on ALL players, and there would be zero royalties to be paid to Dolby. Do people really care about commentaries? If so, okay, make a 192 kbps Dolby Digital track for that and the customer can then eat the cost of the royalties. At that point you might as well just add the Japanese audio with another 192 kbps track. My whole point is they could have fit all of this content using better quality if they had people who knew what they were doing making these discs. I couldn't care less where it comes from.
I imagine for a Japanese person who not a purist it's easier to watch with the native Japanese dub track so this set caters for that while the English track caters for the more purists use case. On that narrow point it's the best of both worlds. For me it's a good set as I like Columbo and learning Japanese so it's a double win :) all be best
I'd be interested to know if all the episodes in 1080p would still fit on 35 disks? Also, I there is a significant upgrade in picture quality in 1080i even though it's not a 1080p (to me it looks as good as my other 1080p disks). I gather the madman (Australia release) disks are 1080p so maybe get those instead? Anyway the streaming market means these types of sets will soon be a thing of the past don't you think?
@@hhdddgg6198 1080i over 1080p only saves space if you're working with the same frame rate. 1080p60 vs. 1080i30. Telecining a movie into 1080i30 is just silly. I looks like those other ones are 1080p, but aren't there only 2 seasons released, and like 4 years ago? The streaming market isn't killing these releases, it's these companies only ever releasing one or two seasons to test the waters. People want entire series sets for these shows. So no one buys them, holding out for the set that never comes, because the one season didn't sell, so the makers assume the series as a whole will not sell.
The Japanese release I reviewed here is the exact same image Universal Studios uses for their HD broadcasts on TV currently, they are not changing the image when released on these Blu ray discs, these sets are made by Universal Studios also not another company. So universal studios has said this is the best image quality this show will have. Hope this helps Stay tuned! I have some exciting new content coming soon about some new sets I have found.

And just one more thing...glad you did this video. Wish this were a longer video though. Love Frank Columbo.
I was coming back to find it. I can’t stand that this still is not been released in the USA. I can’t pay $300. Thinking about caving and just getting the DVD boxset. It’s only around $50 which is a steal so if the Blu-ray’s do come out I am not like a to bad to upgrade later.
Given the current exchange rate, you can now get it from Amazon Japan for about $200.
@@Desslar yeah, I ended up picking up on DVD for $35. It’s looks great.
@@popculture3394 Yeah, same here! Still ant the Blu ray though. One day...
You know I'm still surprised Universal would put all this effort for a Columbo Japanese set release but not for the USA?
Does the set come with the two pilot episodes? Does it come with all seasons up to I think season 13 from 2003?
Yes, as I talk about in the review the set it includes every episode & movie, there is also the Amazon link for The Complete Series Columbo Blu Ray set in the description section of this video : @t

Well I'll be damned! (re: my previous note), I just went ahead, and decided to try ordering it..... and it went through! I don't know why Amazon Japan's customer service told me they could not ship it internationally! Strange!
Because of the stuff going on around the world amazons shipping is very random right now, but I am glad you were able to get it shipped and that my videos were able to help you out, please make sure to SUBSCRIBE and SHARE, thanks.
Thanks. I'll subscribe.
does it have spanish subtitles?
in a few weeks a Kino blu-ray will release season 1-7 (remaster 4k)
You mentioned that one or more episodes was in 16:9. Were the originals not all 4:3?
Could You give link to the shop where I can buy this BOX?
The set is for the Japanese market so the obvious sites in Japan are one place (Amazon japan etc) alternatively your local eBay but that might be more expensive. All the best
I explain in the video that Amazon.jp is where you can buy it from. I have some more great reviews coming soon make sure to SUBSCRIBE.
What site did you get these from. An you sure they are region free, Most I have asked about on ebay are region A.
Also Plays fine on my uk ps4. I got mine from Amazon Jp a few years ago now.
If you watched my video I explain where to buy them and that it is a region free or region unlocked Blu Ray Set, so that means it plays with no problems at all on all regular Blu Ray players.
Interestingly, I think Japanese blu rays and DVDs are region 1 (A) like North America.
I have this set. It plays fine on my U.K. Ps4.
Every time I ask the sellers they say it's region locked think they said region 1. Bet these look great in HD
Where are you based? If uk should be fine. Maybe they are getting confused with the DVD release since blu Ray releases are region a,b,c not 1,2,3
@@hhdddgg6198 I'm in the UK was planning on using them on my xbox one x.
I should say it has English audio and subtitles too
Я смотрю это в России, бесплатно. В 720p. Супер сериал. В 90х смотрел по ТВ.
Does it have mrs Columbo
Does anyone know the best deal for the complete series of Columbo on DVD?
I want to buy it as a gift for my mother.
Total price will be $56.72 from the Walmart website 2 days free shipping no membership needed

@@MorganTyler86 If you haven't bought this set yet, Amazon is currently selling the complete series on DVD for $28.
Jimmy Mac, I already own it but thanks for the info
@@hhdddgg6198 Your attitude of optimism is nauseating
Hope this helps
Stay tuned! I have some exciting new content coming soon about some new sets I have found.
American show, not released in North America for North American fans. Makes sense.
