    Imo, apart from the player boards (and the box art), I dislike the art style a lot, very simple, scarce, the board is horrible compared to the other one which was much clearer.

      @@Slyfox1775 Gary Pope (a youtuber from a couple years ago) had a great solution for the Tiles of Kemet. He used coin holder sheets and slid the tiles in. That way when you unbox, the tiles are all set up, and it's easy to pass the plastic sheets around for people to see. Now the tiles do stick out a slight bit from their pockets, but it works well enough. I tried to find his original video where he shows this, but it must have been in a boardgame breakfast segment years ago, and there's no way I can find it now.
      If you can't picture what I've mentioned, let me know, and I'll post a pict onto my instagram account.

    I found the balance changes which is one of the big draws from me possibly getting blood and sand, and they all look really good. I'm glad they nerfed Initiative. It still looks worthy of the 4 PP cost without being a brain dead OP tile to always try and buy. Legion is more expensive which I think is totally fair. Looking through at it all I think Matagot did a GREAT job in knocking off the rough edges of the Tile balancing.

    I strongly disagree with regards to the tiles. The original tiles look much better. The symbology on the original tiles is much clearer and more easily understood. The original board is WAY better. I don’t know what they were thinking with that board. I also like the more colorful original box cover, not that that really matters much.

    This looks awesome esp the new minis but yea prolly just stick with my old version of Kemet. I’m not even sure I agree that the new pyramids are better, it was quite clear to me just looking at the number on the 4-sided die what the level was, now you would need to judge the height of the pyramid piece.

    There is a lot of nostalgia affecting these comments and opinions which I totally understand but as someone who didn't own the first one I far prefer every aspect of Blood and Sand. Just my personal opinion, no one is right or wrong so I'm not sure why people are hating on B&S so much, just don't buy it. Everyone has their own opinion. One of mine is that the old art looks like an episode of the Thunder Cats or GI Joe visiting Egypt.

    Not showing those 3 bars on the tiles if they are empty would have made them look much better. I'm not sure why they decided to make them that way. The art on the tiles also looks more washed out than the original. Strange decision.

      I bought the original Kemet a while back despite finding the board incredibly ugly. After seeing this new version, I still prefer the original, and suggest you pick it up as well as C3K if you still can. The C3K expansion makes the original worth it over this reprint. Then again, if you can't get the original, the game is still good enough to warrant getting this second edition!

      Yes. The only thing that's broken for core map is the green expansion tile Apophis. Apophis is able to move to any region next to the river. Is the old board compatible with the new version?

    • @tominatorxx
      @tominatorxx 3 года назад +1

      Yes and no. For the base game (by which I mean everything in the base version of Blood & Sand) the answer is yes. However, if future expansions are of any interest to you, then there might be a problem. The Book Of The Dead expansion (green pyramid) has Apophis as a giant mini which can move on the Nile part of the board. Given that the board is slightly redesigned (I think the original version had 1 or 2 player cities next to the river), there will be some issues incorporating that.
      And as for future expansions, who knows? There will be a future expansion, that's for sure because both the victory point board (as well as the playmat that I bought with it) have a 6th VP track for a 6th player. But again, if you're only interested in the base game, then I don't think you'll be running into issues with the old board.

  • @g8kpr3000
    @g8kpr3000 3 года назад +5

    Thanks for the comparison. I have the original and as much as I love it, it doesn't seem to hit the table as much as it should. Having said that. I will definitely not upgrade. While the new one has some positives, there appears to be a lot of negatives too. The new tiles don't seem as nice as the old. I never found that any tiles were unbalanced, but that may be because I haven't played the game so much to be completely immersed in the meta of it. The trays are not a big deal, I slid all my tiles into plastic coin holders which greatly helps with setup.
    The new board is straight up awful. The old one may be showing it's age a bit design wise, but the new one is just ugly. The overlays look hideous. I had no idea those were supposed to be "storms" until you said it. Thought it was some weird tie-dye pattern or vortex or something.
    The pyramids are ok, i guess.. but not enough to make me leap into getting this. I still like the old D4s (even though they're technically not pyramid shaped).
    The one thing I do like, are the army pieces, the larger ones look nicer for sure.
    The player mats are fine, but the old ones were fine as well. So most things seem slightly nicer in the new one, but it doesn't blow the previous one out of the water. So I would agree with you, if you have the original, no need for this one.

    What is up with the board! I understand if they game the storm cover-up tiles to save on printing two sides of the board...but if they're gonna have art on it anyway (which I find pointless as you need the board to play and I don't see anyone framing a board game board) then why bother at all in the first place! If anything they had to spend more to print the storm tiles additionally...although I'm not sure if it has any relevance to the game, haven't played Kemet in years.

    • @KissellMissile
      @KissellMissile 3 года назад

      Some companies (especially European ones) do not like to print on both sides of the board, as one side will be a lower quality based on how the material overlay is attached. Printing storm tokens probably cost little, as they likely had space on the punchboards anyway.
      As far as putting art on the back, you have to put something there so it mine as well be a picture.

    • @VaultBoy13

      You can't make it work for all the player counts with 2 sides.
      2 player blocks a temple on the West side of the river. East side of the river is unused.
      3 player blocks nothing. East side of the river is unused.
      4 player blocks a temple on the West side of the river and a temple on the East side of the river.
      5 player blocks a temple on the West side of the river.
      6 player blocks nothing.
      Original Kemet had the same issue, but it used the overlay tile in 6-player (or any of the 1 vs many) games.
      To support the different player counts, you'll at a minimum need 1 tile.

    This is not a better variant, and the reason is simple: the original Kemet made it rewarding to attack, by lowering the punishment for doing so. The new (well, already in 1.5, but here it goes even further) rules punish you for this, and so hugely change the dynamic of the game and it's absolute best point.

    Meh, I’ll stick with my old version. The fact the games are still pretty similar will make the older version worth a lot more in the years to come because people will want the original over the new, eventually. With the advent of 3D printers you can print the trays or player board covers. I actually prefer the dice pyramids to the pyramids and yup...if the 3D printable pyramids aren’t out already...they will be soon. The new board is a real downgrade compared to the original. And I hate the overlays, it's such an ugly bleh on the map.

    Interesting how Tom didn't mention the new rulebook. It's really bad.

    I do agree with reprinting games, but you think with as vocal and as critical as board gamer tend to be they companies would hire an art consultant or something. At least screen some of the art in front of people. This isn't the only tragedy of this kind of "makeover." The functionality of it i love... but im not spending a premium price on something that looks this awful. And Kemet is a game I want in my collection. Im the one they are trying to sell to.

      The trick (which I have experienced personally) is that different communities of gamers have very different expectations on what the art should look like (how realistic of a style, how much to forefront clarity, etc.). I am speaking beyond just the general "art is subjective." It is quite possible they did consult with other artists and they thought this product was good for their biggest market (which is normally not Kickstarter backers).

      An art director would be a good idea, but hell, even a boardgame focus group. Put a notice out on BGG for people in the area to come in for a focus group. Especially Kemet fans who have played many times. Seems like a straight up obvious part of a redesign.

    I have the original and all the expansions. I chose not to back this one, as it seemed like more of a money sink. I think they were planning on adding a Green colored set of powers too. How much variety do you really need in a game like this? The original worked fine as is. I downloaded the 1.5 rules but that's where I decided to stop investing in Kemet. I believe on the KS they were offering some kind of "upgrade" package but I didn't buy that either. The only problem with the original is unfortunate terminology like references to white power and slaves, which I believe they fixed here.

      The upgrade pack was a rip off . The old version is awesome so why bother .

      1. Slavery existed in ancient Egypt and Slavery still exists in Africa today.
      2. White/Black power in Kemet has nothing to do with White/Black Power in the political theater.
      The major problem with racism today (at least in the U.S.) is that people keep trying to make everything about racism.
      For that, the new Kemet/Matagot Games can take their virtue signaling BS and shove it.

    IMO I love my original Kemet, I love the art and graphic design, it just has a classic look. It's strange how they managed to make the remake look drab and to me more bland and the board.. looks terrible. Old school Kemet all the way!
