She's just a better singer now, maybe that's why many think she lip synched here but she lets us know she isn't lip synching by stopping for some seconds during the performance. I love this Katy!!!
I also think her musicianship is improving by her choice of smart insertion of playback on top background singers to help give her a break without stoping the flow of the lyrics. Giving her enough time to recover and ad lib and keep the same vibe of the song.
Honestly with her choreo and moving between props and costume changes; it’s about time she started using some playback.
Also the beginning. She didn’t move too much, so she can control it better
AND, this was made for the New Years performance thing on ABC or NBC, so who knows if they edited it or not. But, if you look at a lot of other videos from the residency (by fans) shes for sure singing live.
And to be honest there would be no shame in lip syncing in her performance since I believe this part comes at the middle/end of her very energetic show! But to be fair I think she lip synced When I'm Gone with a pre-recorded track. It could've helped her gain stamina for Walking On Air, which is definitely live. But still, she delivered really good vocals here
I feel like they may have overdubbed a few bits with different vocal takes just to polish it up for RUclips, but she def did this performance live and sounded great!

damn she killed it.. her vocals are so resonant, cutting deeper than ever :o she improved
actually she was always good, it just came down to nerves and stage presence + dancing/jumping. If you look up her MTV unplugged acoustic performances and her very first album Katy Hudson you can see she actually did a lot of riffs and runs and clean falsettos. her agility and technique actually worsened with age but yeah her power improved

Yeah she does. Sometimes it’s just not consistent and people focus on that so much that they forgot that she can actually sing live.
But how do you know this lol? Where is your proof? I’m not being rude, I just genuinely want to know where your proof is that there hasn’t been any post production?
Mmm, I would say there’s a little to at least help the vocal sound clearer in spite of it being with a large audience.
It has that same “metallic clarity” she had in the Halftime Show performance, maybe less so here, and the Inauguration performance.
Let's be honest. Most of the time she sounds terrible live.
There was deffo post production, you can especially tell on the head notes. Everyone has post production - it’s not a read on Katy.
When I'm gone is a great comeback and after 8 years Walking on Air is still so beautiful and catchy 😍
Fun Fact: Walking On Air is from her album Prism, released in 2013, and from the start everybody, the KatyCats and the GP want to make Walking On Air as an official single, but unlikely, it never happened 😅😢
I always liked Katy Perry, her singles. But I really started to discover her and her music at the time she was releasing her "Witness" album. And I was shocked how many great songs she'd recorded for her prior albums. The first time I heard "Walking on air" I was like "WHAT?" It's such an amazing tune, it will never get old! And all of these hits that I've never heard before, like "The one that got away", "Unconditionally", "Part of me" and many others - amazing.
Acually, in december of 2013, Katy asked her fans if they want Walking On Air or Dark Horse as a single. And fans chose Dark Horse. And since it is her most successful and biggest songs (and easily among biggest songs ever), i'm glad tbh, also it is a fav off of Prism as well (WOA is Top 3 as well)
I’m so glad to see Katy back on game again. She so deserves it. Smile didn’t get the recognition it deserved!

@@marcobejines2035 THAT WAS YEARSSS AGOOO and was for the airing of the nfl halftime show so it needs to perfect since it's going to be aired on live television, nowadays she doesn't lipsync especially on her live concerts, I've been to 2 of her las vegas residency play concerts now and she sings live no lipsync just back up singer assisting her at times but she sings live AMAZINGLY. and she's stable as fck

This was the best I've heard her in a very long time.
I was lucky enough to attend the final dress rehearsal of the show, the night before the residency opened. After the dress rehearsal, they moved everyone closer to the stage and they filmed this performance! The show was ok… but I will vouch that she is not lip syncing. She messed up a few times during the dress rehearsal and it was her through the microphone.

I was at the dress rehearsal which is when this was filmed, and I can confirm that this was all live! She absolutely kills this song every time, as well as the rest of the show! You can even see me in the crowd haha

Definitely not lip-synced, someone posted the full live set on here last week. Sadly her mic seemed a little low throughout the show, (it’s the first show of the residency, I’d always expect some form of technical issues this early on) either that or the mic on the camera/ phone the person was using to record the show wasn’t picking up her voice too well over the music. Either way her mic was most definitely on throughout the entire set and overall she put on a really solid vocal performance.

there are a handful of live backing vocalists as well, i’d say 3 or 4
I love her pulling the mic away so everyone knows she's actually singing. Walking on air was from Prism. She had so many good songs on that album that didn't become singles.

Yeah with age her voice is definitely “richer” and darker and not quite as sweet as when she was 27 when Teenage Dream came out.

I wanted to share this real quick! - As a performing artist & live sound engineer, watching lips isn't a reliable because of so many technological factors that could cause viewers to see a slight lag. Her mic is also super sensitive and has been fine tuned to pick up exactly which parts of her voice she might need for each individual song. They're programmed into the sound board and with each act it automatically adjusts. There is a sound man to make any live adjustments too. I've had other performers ask me if there was any pitch correction (auto tune) or backing tracks playing with them because how clean and well designed I was able to craft their live performance from the booth. Just thought I'd share, before I got behind the tech side of things I didn't quite understand from just a trained singer perspective.
Also, since we're here: auto tune doesn't work unless you can actually sing the notes anyway. 🙊😉 For anyone wondering
