No kidding. He does a lot of long scenes packed with dialogue. I can see him working for 10 minutes and me screwing up my one word "line" at the very end of his dialogue.
I'm sure Day was really patient and nice with the kid but also I can kind of relate to the kid in a similar situation. When I was 13 I did a Student film for NYU and being my first ever film of any kind I was super nervous, not to mention the guy who played my dad was like a full-time actor IMDB the whole nine yards. You'd think it would be hard to act alongside a guy like that with no experience myself but because his acting was so good it made me so much more comfortable with lines because of how real everything he said to me felt.
Chilling. Anyone who has ever known someone with a drinking problem can feel this scene. The way Daniel Day Lewis inhabits a character is staggering. Kudos to the young actor too for really selling the wanting-to-be-anywhere-but-here awkwardness of being in public with a drunk.

Fun fact: this is one of the two times Daniel Day-Lewis ever broke character. The other was during a one-man performance of Hamlet he enacted, when he was eight.
So I was (un)lucky to witness the third, in 1989 London, when he left the stage 20 minutes into the play, crying loud, and never, ever came back:-) And I had been a wash-up in a clumsy pub to earn for this ticket in a second row...
I don't get that scene. It's not a sin to abandon your boy is it? Maybe it is, and maybe the congregation thinks it's bad, but I think Plainview hates himself for it more than anyone else could hate him for it, including god. So why does Eli make it a point to point that out, if it's not a sin, than a preacher has no jurisdiction in making him feel like shit. Except because he hates Plainview as much as Plainview hates Eli. Fuckin' great movie.
@@dansmith6990 He made doing nothing look easy imho. He was a stoic only child that had an egomaniacal abusive father, it's good contrast but easy to miss the subtleties. But I can only imagine how acting in twbb would make or break you, especially as a kid!
@@Viddywe11 fair enough, you made some good points. I was only saying that the kid really didn't do much. I'm sure it wasn't easy. Let's take the kid that played young Hodor from Game of Thrones. The part where he flips out and is screaming his own name looks completely believable and was a very haunting scene, but in interviews the kid acting said he didn't think he was hard at all
When they called him Daniel I was so confused for a second (haven't seen the film so I didn't know that was his name), for a moment I thought it was just Daniel Day Lewis having lunch on set with some kid while harassing his coworkers in character.
A giggle after the director yells "cut" is not breaking character. Dissolving into hysterical tears when you're playing Hamlet and chasing the ghost off the stage - THAT is breaking character. Which Day Lewis did.
Although apparently in that case, he was more or less "experiencing" something similar to what the character Hamlet was, so in a way, his method acting, even when it's uncalled for or embarrassing, is never really diminished by "mistakes" like that.
DarkCyberElf (Mylon Requiem) Who said it was? I think it's amazing, and I wish I could have been there. Regardless, it IS breaking character - which this clip isn't. That's my point.
Serai3 It wasn't breaking character. He was so 'in' the character that he did that. It was more breaking script, or stuffing around the performance. But it wasn't breaking character. Him laughing (as himself), is breaking character.
priceless1995 The character exists in the script. If, while portraying the character, an actor fails to follow the script, then he has gotten something wrong with the character, and is thus breaking character.
He didnt break the character. He stops acting after the "cut" and then only. I would never call it breaking, breaking would be if he stopped acting during a shot. He's rock solid.
Notice how Anderson just let him ad lib as long as he wanted to? That's how you get magic out of Daniel Day-Lewis, let him do that character day in, day out and record him the whole time.
When you have an actor like Daniel Day-Lewis, who is famous for extending scenes, mixed with an auteur like PTA, you actually budget for extra time it will take to film scenes. Also, it's not as if DDL needs many takes to get a scene right, which is why you let him keep going.
This is so great! I love the reaction of the actor playing his son. He is fantastic throughout this film. Especially considering who he has to share most of his scenes with! But this little exchange here is just awesome! When he sees DDL break character, probably for the first & only time during the filming of this movie, it's almost like he has this huge sense of relief. Any & all of his nervousness seemed to just fade away and he knew that going forward there was nothing to be nervous about. He and DDL were on the same page.
Daniel Day Lewis is so good. I am pretty sure he built a time machine, went back to the early 1900s, started an oil company, came back and saw the script and said, "Hey, i just did this yesterday. This should be easy".
No one even mentioning how the kid doesn’t break character until Daniel does, at which point he busts out laughing. That’s some talent right there. Edit: some people in the replies really hate complimenting kids and really like being mean to each other so proceed at your own risk. ❤️
Laughing isn't breaking character, per se. He's just letting off a little pressure--you can see his young costar needed that release as well. This was a very wise instinct. Because, afterall, the movie needs to get made, and people need to feel safe, and be able to work with him. If Daniel Plainview was literally, actually, present on set for every moment... the movie wouldn't get made.
I disagree respectively. First... laughing during a scene when its not part of the scene is definitely breaking character and here I believe it was just that... a laugh. I don't think that was a strategy based on instinct to ease pressure while on set. That would be a bad strategy especially when the idea is to get the movie done, as you say. How many times have we seen a laugh like that in the blooper reel and it just becomes a repeat every take at that same time between the actor or actors... many times. That would be a waste of time, when you wat to get the movie done.
Imagine if the actor was Daniel Plainview and that he was making a movie about Daniel Day-Lewis. Imagine what kind of hell the whole movie crew would go through lol.
That's the genius of D.D.L. He is so committed to the part that even when he breaks character, you still wouldn't know it unless somebody told you he did.
Daniel Day Lewis is known for staying in character. He used to go to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He’s an absolute pro. Breaking character is probably a light relief once in a while. This is one of the most intense roles he’s ever played. Great insight. What a great clip. Thanks
I had never seen this movie until about 6 months ago and now it’s in my top 3 favorites. Blessed are we to be alive at the same time as DDL so that we could witness his greatness on screen. I don’t know another actor who could captivate a character in the way that he does. Amazing movie. And props to the kid for being so in tune with him!!
Who the hell cares about the Joker? Some of you see a great actor and the best you can think of is that he would make a great Joker? Maybe, just maybe, it's time to step outside your bubble of superhero entertainment and see what else is out there...
You know, it is possible to appreciate the cinematic artworks of "There Will Be Blood" and still feel that Daniel Day Lewis could play an excellent Joker.
He looks so much like my older brother, it's insane. Watching this and "My Left Foot" just mesmerizes me, moreso, as my brother had cerebral palsy. What a gifted, humble man this is.
He’s such a serious actor but I love how good he is with all the kids he works with. He may be a total pro but he’s also a dad before anything. Love him.
pretty sure everyone was laughing at the fly that kept circling his face you can see it a 1:13, he waves it away right after at the very end, 2:14 it was on his face, prompting him and the kid to laugh
I love that the actor playing HW is so in tune with DDL they break almost simultaneously. God it’s easy to forget what a great movie this is. PTA is a national treasure.
Glassy-eyed and gruff. My poetry teacher had the same look about him; you could never tell if he wanted to hug you or stab you in the neck with a fork.
This is one of the greatest performances by an actor of all time. A seriously underrated film as well. DDL is just on another level than any other actor and proves it with his performance in this film, as well as, every other film he has appeared in.
Underviewed might be a better word for it. While this is one of the greatest acting performances ever, I feel pretty confident there are a lot of ppl who have not seen or even heard of this movie for how great it is.
The actor who was cast to play Eli filmed some scenes in There Will Be Blood with DDL. He was intimated and scared acting wtih DLL, and was fired. Paul Dano who was originally cast only to play Eli's brother Paul, was then told to also take over the Eli part (I assume as identical twins). He literally had a few days to learn a MASSIVE amount of dialogue. He should have won best supporting actor. Two of the best performances in movie history
Not at all. DDL can be quite hammy when he's not brilliant, and the other two have their moments of both. Di Caprio might be the lightest of that trio, but he is highly skilled. What they all do is well above what most can do.
Has no one seen Leo in What’s eating Gilbert Grape or what? They all put out amazing pieces of work. We could enjoy them all. There’s a way to compliment an actor without criticizing others.
when you act with really great actors it's crazy because you can't tell when they are acting and when they aren't. Sometimes you think they are actually talking to you but they are still in the scene. It's a weird feeling and hard to explain unless you've experienced it. It's so fun but also freaky.
@@sdk4073 Well technically he did, just after "cut" Lewis is know for method acting, where he basically never breaks character on or off set until the end of filming. So 'technically' did break character. Go be a smart ass elsewhere
now i think we know who is the new superman after he doesnt put his supermanclothes on in a telephonebooth anymore now he has a mobile phone to tell him where and when he can read how big he is breaking bad, like making blue meth.
He smiled after the director said “cut” as a sign that everyone on the set can now relax.. His acting was so on point that the rest tried to stay quiet afraid that they’re going to get in trouble if they cause any kind of distraction during the take.. 😆
Been a while since Day-Lewis has played a role that wasn't a little over the top. There is always a special voice and exaggerated traits to his characters. I'd like to see him do something subtle.
Matthew Britzius Also see the Boxer...You couldn't get more "everyman type' than the quiet Danny in that film. And I also don't see how Lincoln is at all an OTT performance. LIke I said, he's idiosyncratic like the real lincoln was (with his high pitched voice and stiff legged walk) but he plays Lincoln in an understated way which is pretty hard to do considering Lincoln had such odd characteristics in real life. I know because I read up on Mr. Lincoln quite a bit before the film came out. DDL has proved he can play regular guys. Humanizing an iconic character is just as hard if not harder. Plus, even his everymen have accents different than his own. Now, to say that it would be nice to see him play a character who sounds like himself,,,that I understand. But accent or no accent, funny walk or no funny walk--subtlety and/or theatricality have little to do with those characteristics. You can overplay an 'everyman' as well if you choose to.
You should watch him in Nine. The film itself isn't anything special, but the actors in it give good performances and Day-Lewis does it very well - plays an Italian director having a mid-life crisis and compared to his other roles it's very toned down. (there's also a few songs in it, if you're into that sort of thing...)
I just cannot stop watching this. Brings back memories when my dad used to bring me into bars as a kid and he would get hammered and him and his friends would start shit. He even had that mustache and I looked exactly like that kid sitting there uncomfortable as hell.
That's wild dude. I knew this hold pirate that I can't describe to anyone except in one way. He drank a 26 a day on the reg when playing light and was. ..Picture a black haired Louis CK/jabba the hut cross who could only smile and make fun of all things believed. An utter savage of guy. Looked Like Louis except bigger stronger and Black like the blackest pirate in your head. Guy was a Laugh out of hell.

@@Viddywe11 fair enough, you made some good points. I was only saying that the kid really didn't do much. I'm sure it wasn't easy.
Let's take the kid that played young Hodor from Game of Thrones. The part where he flips out and is screaming his own name looks completely believable and was a very haunting scene, but in interviews the kid acting said he didn't think he was hard at all
Daniel Day-Lewis's outtakes should be labeled, "For Awards Consideration".
That’s not fair to any of the actors who are trying.

When they called him Daniel I was so confused for a second (haven't seen the film so I didn't know that was his name), for a moment I thought it was just Daniel Day Lewis having lunch on set with some kid while harassing his coworkers in character.
haha yea i thought so too XD
yes, perfect interpretation. indistinguishable from reality. but, he was dressed in a 19th century suit!!
Well...you're not wrong lol
GLaD OS / I was thinking the same thing !
See! That's the kind of believability he brings to the characters! Biggest actor of all time for a reason 🙏
Daniel day lewis breaks character and makes the scene even better than before.
Stale Whale nah you wrong for that
Alexander SomethingOrOther nah you wrong for that
A giggle after the director yells "cut" is not breaking character.
DarkCyberElf (Mylon Requiem)
Who said it was? I think it's amazing, and I wish I could have been there. Regardless, it IS breaking character - which this clip isn't. That's my point.
Serai3 Yeah, I didn't really see the break in character personally either.
Exactly... it’s just click bait 🙄

It's not clickbait.
He only stops acting once the commentaries are done.

Notice how Anderson just let him ad lib as long as he wanted to? That's how you get magic out of Daniel Day-Lewis, let him do that character day in, day out and record him the whole time.
on film mind you
Yeah, and take twelve year to make the fucking film. Do you have any idea how much it costs to run a movie production per hour?
It took twelve years to make the film? The filming started in 2006
When you have an actor like Daniel Day-Lewis, who is famous for extending scenes, mixed with an auteur like PTA, you actually budget for extra time it will take to film scenes. Also, it's not as if DDL needs many takes to get a scene right, which is why you let him keep going.
So... this movie doesn't hit theatre's until 2018? LOL

Do you realize how man6 assumptions you made in your comment?
Daniel Day Lewis is so good. I am pretty sure he built a time machine, went back to the early 1900s, started an oil company, came back and saw the script and said, "Hey, i just did this yesterday. This should be easy".
Daniel Day-Lewis is a once-in-a-century actor. He melts into every role and is absolutely captivating.

2:09 - WELL, TAKE the glass...
@@bobabooey4537 He didn't laugh during the take; the director says "cut" and then DDL slips out of character and laughs.
Yeah if actual Plainview had been there, it would have been... Bad.
Their smiles at the end. Priceless :)
Does anyone know why they laughed? I think the kid farted based on the reactions.
The kid laughed bc Ddl spilled from the glass then ad libbed for the waiter to take it at the end -they knew it wasn’t going in the film
When I see any scene from this movie I don't see Daniel Day-Lewis, I only see Daniel Plainview. That's how good he is.
Oh Jesus. Is the character named Daniel, too?!
“Well take the glass” for sure wasn’t scripted. The improv’d part broke them. I love it.
How tf do you know 'for sure'
That's just speculation

That was a reset.
This is like a lunar eclipse. Doesn't happen that often.
Imagine if the actor was Daniel Plainview and that he was making a movie about Daniel Day-Lewis. Imagine what kind of hell the whole movie crew would go through lol.
Love how the waiter didn't take the glass at first because most likely that was improvised and you don't wanna be that extra who fucks a scene up.
That's the genius of D.D.L. He is so committed to the part that even when he breaks character, you still wouldn't know it unless somebody told you he did.
He doesn’t read the script, the script reads him.
What does that even MEAN?
@@gesto211 mean, does that even ?
Brilliant
Stanislavsky spent years studying the Day Lewis method
Daniel Day Lewis is known for staying in character. He used to go to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. He’s an absolute pro. Breaking character is probably a light relief once in a while. This is one of the most intense roles he’s ever played. Great insight. What a great clip. Thanks
He didn't break character, that's why it's so good
Damn.. he even breaks character in character... LEGEND

This is one of the greatest performances by an actor of all time. A seriously underrated film as well. DDL is just on another level than any other actor and proves it with his performance in this film, as well as, every other film he has appeared in.
He won an oscar for the performance and the film won tons of awards including an oscar... not really under-rated
This and Lincoln are my favs of his. Hes an acting genius.

DDL makes Joaquin Phoenix and Di Caprio look like lightweights
True
Not joaquin Pheonix, but yes for Leo
Not at all. DDL can be quite hammy when he's not brilliant, and the other two have their moments of both. Di Caprio might be the lightest of that trio, but he is highly skilled. What they all do is well above what most can do.
barryschwarz so in short, they’re all fucking brilliant and serious actors
Has no one seen Leo in What’s eating Gilbert Grape or what? They all put out amazing pieces of work. We could enjoy them all. There’s a way to compliment an actor without criticizing others.
when you act with really great actors it's crazy because you can't tell when they are acting and when they aren't. Sometimes you think they are actually talking to you but they are still in the scene. It's a weird feeling and hard to explain unless you've experienced it. It's so fun but also freaky.

Was Lincoln really OTT? Iconic and idiosyncratic--Yes. But for the most part,he was subtle.
There were subtleties in the performance, but I wouldn't classify it as subtle. Just my opinion. I mean an everyman type of role.
Please explain subtle? This is subtle. I'm confused :(
Brilliant actor. He has created some of the best characters in film history.
That giggle at the end got me...🤣😂 Daniel Day Lewis sure has the most beautiful smile❤️
