@@TheForceFandom with kids today, there's an aim for shorter content, because that's what they consume. There are plenty of examples of great half hour television shows over the decades.
Agree, Fern is not a Mary Sue, in fact in episode 1 we are shown that she loses her status as "leader" of the class and that it is her mother, Fara, who makes arrangements at school for her to regain that position. The other way in which the series shows us that she does not have the skills to "lead" is that she never "summons" others, on the contrary, she manipulates them, deceives them, to get others to do what she wants. In ep 6 she tried again until KB said enough...and Fern couldn't handle it. All the kids took steps in their evolution, and the show did so in a believable and organic way. For me it was a fantastic episode.
Fern is more of a nepo baby using her mom's status to get out of trouble. Wim is the (loveable?) slacker who lives his Jedi dreams in his head and other than Neel has no real friends.
Shedding the armor was really cool, but can also be symbolic and applied to the kids also. They're growing up and shedding aspects of childhood plus they shed Jod who looks like, at least at this point, that he was holding them back.
The difference between Wim and KB is not due to them being different genders. The difference is that KB, because of her augs, has probably been treated badly in the past. Wim, on the other hand, has always been secure in the fact that he and Neel will be friends forever.
I think the closest character we have to Fern is Poe Dameron. Poe Dameron is just amazing 100% of the time and his decisions somehow always work out for him and he does not care about leading people to their deaths as long as he gets his way. Meanwhile Fern has that same brute force attitude but is out of her depth is actually bothered when her leadership decisions put the group in bad situations.
There is no problem on how they went about the show. It is a really great show. It moved the plot forward, too. With everybody's character development. That is part of the plot.
I'll take character development over plot any day. That was the big issue we Trilogy fans had with the prequels. Not enough character development and too much "plot" development.
I love the kids development and working together more as their own team of “pirates”. I totally missed the Onyx Cinder “shedding its skin/baggage and transforming into something new” metaphor … kudos!
This will never make sense to me. I don’t understand why internally they were worried about this show. It truly is incredible that they have no clue what they are doing.
I'm not sure what you mean by "pushed." I've seen WAAAAAAY more advertisements for Skeleton Crew. In NYC there are ads in subways, on taxis, billboards etc. and I get tons of ads on RUclips, facebook, product tie-ins with Home Chef meal prep, Lego toys, etc. not to mention a music video of Major Tom dubbed in Huttese, where as all I saw for Acolyte was a cool poster (lightsaber with blood) and a few interview videos with the cast. Skelton Crew even had promotion at Disneyland which I don't remember seeing for Acolyte and certainly not Andor.
Well, it was Jon Watts and who ever else that's why it was so good. That team needs to make more series and movies I actually almost had a tear coming down my eye. KB. 🙏
You could say they all became a REAL CREW at the end. Fern truly became the captain by assigning each crew member the task they did best, Niel became the pilot, Wim became the gunner, and KB became the tech/engineer. I also liked everyone's development. In Fern's case because she FINALLY dropped her ego and humbled herself when it looked like she was going to lose her best friend and she actually admitted her faults and apologized. All essential steps towards maturity and true leadership. In Wim's case, rather than be his usual self who jumps in without thinking, he actually slowed down and focused purely on the task at hand and as a result he saved KB's life. You don't need a lightsaber or the force to be a Star Wars hero. KB reminds me of characters like Raven (Teen Titans), Rei Ayanami (Evangelion), or T'Pol (Star Trek), characters who are quite and stoic on the outside and just go with the flow but are actually quite nice, caring, and couragous on the inside. That heart of gold and emotions are just contained because they either experience something terrible in the past (like KB's accident that made her into a cyborg) or they've never learned how to express those emotions (yet). This episode shows how much emotional weight KB carries around and how fragile her life is in a VERY realistic way, like a person living with cancer or severe allergies or a weak immune system. KB is less immature than the others and doesn't make a full like them because she doesn't take her life for granted nor sweat the small stuff that doesn't really matter but still has her own internal demons to fight like we all do. I liked KB best before this episode but now she's my all time favorite. All in all, these kids are starting to become what we all knew they HAD to become to get through their situation despite losing Jod and 33 (for now), True companions/friends. Cause at the end of the day, all they really have is each other.
I think that AtAttin will remain a secret. When the pirates ☠️ come... well just remember that they didn't show the defense gun on top of the school for nothing.
Yeah I have a feeling that the kids will get back first, and Neel will have the guys locate the defense guns of the planet. Who will defend their home. Maybe now we know more about KB and her abilities, makes me think they will gain access to the tower and she will control the guns remotely from there?
Star Wars has a lot of armchair jockeys who love to throw the term "filler" around, meaning an episode that isn't wall-to-wall action. Usually, what they might see as filler actually has elements that advance the story later; they're just not patient enough to wait and see this. You have to look at a season or even a series in its entirety before you can spot any filler. Also, it's perfectly fine for a show to have an episode or two that don't advance the overall plot if it's done well enough.
good points here. I agree its an overused term and often just means I didnt like it. While I agree this episode isn't filler, i understand how some feel that way about this episode, especially when it is only 25 min.
Bingo. The beloved Mando S1, 2 and 3 had actual filler episodes (frog lady bathing in a pool with her eggs for an entire episode) but you can look past them. They're just there. They get from a to b but nothing else. Skeleton Crew though... banger after banger even if not action packed. Its emotionally charged, fun-packed, lore/world building writing.
As far as Jod not using the Force in the moment, he's had to refrain from using the powers so openly. I'm sure for very good reasons (bountys on Force wielders/Jedis being high, mainly). I think if it comes down to the moment where he has to make a life & death decision, he'll use it.
Thanks but - with such an expensive show to make demanding much longer run time is well dumb! It will not resolve this season, but we are obviously heading to a cliffhanger - but which of the several that are emerging. Pirates on At-atin, is just one. The arrival of x-wings was a new “thing” and “opportunity” for a further plot arc. Who is the squadron leader; how did they get there, will they chase the pirates? And yes I fully expect Smee to be discovered on the ship by one of the kids.
What do you mean discover SM33 on the ship? I think they need to figure out finances for sure, but if others can make 45-55 min runtime shows, Disney should be able to.
Please don't flame me for what I'm about to say. In my opinion, Skeleton Crew is not deserving of the praise it is acclaiming. I know, I know, that must sound absolutely mental to most people, but please hear me out. First, the personalities of the children and how they act feels very cliche like some 80's movie. This is especially strengthened by the interactions between the kids in the latter half of the first episode. Throughout every episode, people do unnecessary flips and spins by explaining them as "cool," which I felt was just a very odd thing to add to the series in of itself. Second, the plot isn't exactly interesting. Some kids get lost from home and try to find their way back while being chased by people looking for treasure (is this The Goonies?). I also feel like the story is very straightforward and simple, (although that may just be me). Third, where did the budget go? Skeleton Crew had a budget higher than the likes of Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but it seemed to have a lower quality than them. Settings were less fleshed out and there was a distinct lack of uniqueness. For example, nearly the entirety of episode 6 of Skeleton Crew was in one location: the base of a mountain that an experienced modeler could set up in half an hour. What did they use the money for? Lastly, a large portion of the show has felt like filler. Episodes are riddled with drawn-out emotional moments that add no value to the story and had no reason to appear in the first place. I know I'm a horrible person for making this explanation, but please don't assault me with words. Thank you for reading this!
I guess the point of the show is to be a simple cliche because that's basically what the original trilogy is and the show is heavily inspired by the goonies so it makes sense that the plot is similar
No assault coming here. You are welcome to your opinion. I feel differently, particularly about the silly flips and turns, other than that one girl I haven’t seen much of that thing. The budget is a fair question, tho I think at times it looks better than the other shows made. Yes the plot is simple and straightforward but there is something about executing even the simple that Disney has been so bad at, which is different here. Thanks for your thoughts, you are no where near a horrible person hahah.
@@TheForceFandom I guess I do agree with you on the flips and turns there; however, I feel it doesn't look as good as the sets in the majority of recent Star Wars content. There are also barely any cinematic/up in the air shots that took up a large portion of the budget in other Star Wars media because of the detail that had to be involved in the making of them. I also agree that the simple plot has been executed better in Skeleton Crew than other work by Disney, but at times it does feel forced and much too linear. Thank you for your insight!
