    as a disabled person, that moment with kb made me tear up. some would call me a high functioning autist, the reality is closer to audhd which i somehow manage. similar to kb, i can do some amazing stuff with my head, but i also have limits, that most people don't seem to have or even be aware of. spending multiple days in stressful environments without maintenance is harmful to me, just that it's overstimulation instead of corrosion. while kb's disability is physical, i find the parallels to mental disabilities like autism and adhd to be quite strong as well, perhaps because many struggles of disability apply in both cases, or because, ironically, kb's disability is actually rather invisible, similar to how mental disabilities tend to be; she seems to be functioning just fine, until something eventually goes wrong, though she may have already been struggling unseen before.
    and the fear of being abandoned because people don't want to take your needs into account is real.

I don’t deny that most of the time I’m glad to be with my friends and loved ones, but sometimes it is just… so frustrating! Bryce Dallas Howard just needs to direct a Star Wars film at this point. Every episode she has directed has been a favorite of mine, and I love the honest conversation this episode gave about disabilities. How sometimes an open conversation needs to be had about how maybe one can’t do things others can do and the other acknowledging it and adjusting to compensate and make sure they know they are loved. I had to had that type of conversation with my younger brother when we were young kids. He is high functioning audhd and while some days you could never tell others we could see things were a struggle for him or athleticism didn’t come as naturally to him. My mind couldn’t understand it and I didn’t wanna treat him differently so I didn’t, until finally one day he cried out to me that he cant “do things like me”. Talking it out helped us out a lot.

The video log from Tak Rennod has him state that he up-armored his ship for his venture to At-Attin, and we saw in the 4th episode that the Gems of the Old Republic have big orbital defense cannons even in their city centers. Ive been a Star Wars fan since I saw it in the theaters in 1978 when I was a kid. The sequel was ok for what it was….. not a huge fan of the writing on those or the book of Boba Fett but I like the layered writing of this show. Also as someone with a heart condition I like how KB is portrayed. Those of us who have conditions that need “maintenance” can relate to how she adjusts based on her condition and situation she is in to reduce the chance of a problem. I think it’s a fairly realistic portrayal of disability management in a sci-fi setting.
    On to the characters to this point, I like the naively of Wim…. He has blind faith, trusting his gut, with a bit of Han Solo luck in his decision making. If he and KB hadn’t split up, KB would have shut down. Yup they ran into a big trash crab and it could have gotten them killed. I enjoyed his realization that he doesn’t make the best decisions and I’m curious how he progresses in character development.
    I love the patience of KB, she may be the engineer trope but she was able to calm Wim and teach him how to help her and show him that even something that seems small can be a big thing. She is beginning to be one of my favorite characters.
    Neil has been a favorite from the start. He pretty much is the fearful kid and since the beginning of the show his character is growing more confident. I love the role he is filling. I won’t say too much to not spoil anything but his role as the crew’s conscience is a bright spot.
    Fern has grown on me. She is the antithesis to Wim. Very regimented in her thinking and every risk she takes is very logically calculated on the path of least resistance with a touch of rebellious attitude. The times when she has had analysis paralysis in the series so far has been relatable even as an adult. She is not written into a corner, she is bossy and cocky but flawed in the right ways with room to grow.
    Over all I love this show, it’s a nice throwback to the Goonies/monster squad types of shows I grew up on and still love to watch when I can find them. I’ll be sad when season 1 is completed in a few weeks. I’ll just have to watch it again.

    KB went with Wimm because she knew (or hoped) she'd find the parts to repair herself but didn't know how to express it to Fern. • @benpayne677

    The revelation about KB’S augments was great writing. The moments were when she appeared to be zoned out may have been her systems degrading. It also is something society can have trouble with, the not visible or apparent disabilities. We all had the assumption that the kid on the sheltered hidden planet had chosen to get the augmentation. There was no obvious signs that she had injuries and appeared to be able bodies. This seemed to be reenforced by her keeping up with Fern. It seemed obvious that Neel was going to have trouble with the climb. There is also a lesson that folks that do not seem or acknowledge a disability do so out of malice. Until someone has either seen or been shown what those challenges someone may have it is natural for everyone to default to their own experience or perspective.

      It's an indicator of the POTENTIAL that Disney has within itself. The problem is that Bog Iger/Kathleen Kennedy have both ruined almost everything, and whether or not Disney can change from that is still up in the air.

    And that final bit is what i think Star Wars has been doing best recently. I love seeing more normal people living in the universe. Andor did this very well too, especially portraying imperial "just a guy"s. The big, dramatic moments they've missed with but they got really good at smaller scale conflict.
    Hopefully the next series of big, galaxy shaking movies deliver.

    KB reminds me of characters like Raven (Teen Titans), Rei Ayanami (Evangelion), or T'Pol (Star Trek), characters who are quite and stoic on the outside and just go with the flow but are actually quite nice, caring, and couragous on the inside. That heart of gold and emotions are just contained because they either experience something terrible in the past (like KB's accident that made her into a cyborg) or they've never learned how to express those emotions (yet).
    This episode shows how much emotional weight KB carries around and how fragile her life is in a VERY realistic way, like a person living with cancer or severe allergies or a weak immune system. KB is less immature than the others and doesn't make a fuss like them because she doesn't take her life for granted nor sweat the small stuff that doesn't really matter but still has her own internal demons to fight like we all do.
    I liked KB best before this episode but now she's my all time favorite.

    Allen, you really called the value of children’s television for adults - allowing us to reexamine our own childhood and find areas we need to work on. As a boy, I would have loved this show because it isn’t overly didactic. In mostly avoiding things like the Force, the Jedi, SK feels even more compellingly Star Wars - it was the part I was interested in as a boy - space pirates.

      Yeah... He put into words something that was bouncing inside my head the last couple of months. He is right we never take the time to think how the past relates to the present as adults. And when you had a problematic childhood, but not like seriously traumatic, you are told that your childhood had not such a serious effect on who you are, when it actually had... Anyway. We have to learn to think for ourselves and assess our situations, mature child shows like Skeleton Crew and other good ones are useful. Also the simplicity they discuss serious matters is quite enlightening.

    The way Fern considered Kb no different from her being both good and bad and the way Whim finally learned that saving a life is not an exciting adventure but something nerve-racking that just happens were very mature and very well written concepts. Honestly, the only problem with this series is that every time an episode finishes, you just want more...!!

I remember when I was around this age I wandered away from a group campout with an acquaintance’s dog and two of that acquaintance’s nephews who were a few years younger. I got disoriented and then I asked the dog to lead me back to camp and of course the dog couldn’t do it and most likely had no idea I had even asked it anything, but I followed it anyway.

    Just like we see the true face of the Onyx Cinder, we see the true face of KB and her reliance on the Augs that keep her alive. There is value in both approaches to acknowledging her condition... both to be aware of the factual limitations and valid concerns as well as to allow for the ability to be treated "normally". KB may be introverted (especially compared to Fern) but she is no fragile wilting flower either. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be accepted and not treated differently, just as there is nothing wrong with understanding and being willing to confront the things that differentiate us. Everybody has baggage, and not everyone is equipped with convenient rollers.

Of course I DID relate to the kids in Goonies (I had asthma for example) but this was more realistic because I had similar situations growing up. I had a best friend in elementary school (for example) that we would not talk to each other and not get along from time to time. We almost got into a fight multiple times. When Fern appologizes and tells KB she is her best friend it broke me.

    It's funny, after KB (toys)'s line about, 'Total system shutdown." I heard her line to Wen more like it would have been more exciting to save a PERSON'S life, rather than a "system", as though she now considered herself more of a droid than a person.
    This also makes (insert yet another character name for Jude Law here) line about not going back for a droid hit harder)...

    • @archaelia
      @archaelia 23 часа назад

      That's what I thought the writing was trying to reveal to us! But thinking about it more and hearing Alan's analysis I'm seeing how Wim's development arc makes more sense for that moment to be about the pre-conceived expectations about "adventures" being exciting and uplifting, rather than terrifying and emotionally heavy. And now I don't think that there's any other way to interpret that line; KB being a "non-lifeform" (i.e. not a "person" with a "life" capable of being "saved") would undermine the stress being placed on KB and Fern's relationship, as whatever KB is experiencing would be a programmed, *designed* feature and not a burden to maintain, and also undermine the things she expresses to Fern via Wim's prompting. It wouldn't have that real-life parallel with invisible illnesses. Plus, people generally treat droids like absolute garbage in SW, lesser than humanoids/aliens, servants, etc. So KB would have had an entirely different and potentially even worse experiences existing as a true droid.

    • @paradoxworkshop4659
      @paradoxworkshop4659 21 час назад

      @archaelia more of how she views herself, as "less than" than others view her.
      Also, notice how when they first interact with the boys, she uses a droid voice "Fern made me do it..." As if Fern sees KB's 'augs' as a toy or tools for her own entertainment, as though KB must necessary share her sense of humour.
      I won't be surprised if the droid voice shows up again, nor will I be surprised if Wim (Sith name, 'FOURTH GRADER') turns out to be not the "main" character...
