THIS is what sold me on Rush when I was 12 back in 1982. I had heard songs like tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio on the radio as a kid but my sister's BF at the time was a big Rush fan and he played a lot of their stuff when he was visiting and I really dug it. When i saw Exit Stage Left in its entirety for the first time on a Saturday night MTV concert, I was hooked and have been ever devoted to them as my favorite band ever since. RIP in Neil and thanks for all the memories. I got to see this band live a total of 7 times thru the years and saw them go out on top in Boston in 2015.

In 1974 I was 11 years old, and living in a suburb of Youngstown, Ohio. One night when playing with my old clock radio, I stumbled across WMMS out of Cleveland. It would only come in at night, and that evening I picked it up just as they started playing Working Man. From then on, I was hooked. I have been a RUSH fan since that fateful summer evening. In 1979, we moved to a suburb of Fort Worth Texas, and I missed them at the cotton bowl. I finally got to see them live at the Moving Pictures show in Dallas. I saw every show since then. I am 59 years old now, and Neil Peart wrote the soundtrack for my life. Thank you to Neil, Getty and Alex for everything. There will never be another group like this one.

I feel like dusting off 2112 and All the World's a Stage tonight and giving it a listen.....oh, and those 11 dislikes never deserved to be here in the first place. RUSH........
The best era of Rush for me. The late ‘70s early ‘80s was that period in between the jammy all the worlds a stage no effects/synth and the over the top synth pushed way upfront, Alex guitars in back signals, grace under pressure, power windows era. This period in 81, was like the Goldilocks porridge, just right. Exit stage left is my all-time favorite Rush album.

I started listening to older Rush tunes as part of my hair replacement therapy. Two months later I look like I did in high school! My doctor can't believe it! Look out ladies.....
In 1982, I laid on Alex's road case not twenty feet from him as the show progressed. I was 29 years old, working on my night off. The very clean cut drum tech gave me 3 pair of Neil's sticks. I was a singing drummer in my own band back then. I still have one pair of the sticks, I used the other two pair on my own kit.

Have to wonder what they would sound like with out each other. Of course, just cant leave out the voice of Rush. Getty you have and amazing voice. I know when this band started out they had a different drummer. But today Rush would not sound the same without the final three PERIOD. Neil is an absolute indescribable juggernaut behind this kit. Undoubtedly, Lerxst/Snow Dog and Dirk/By-Tor were blessed by the brilliance of The Professor/Pratt (Milton Banana)! What an immense legacy they've left us!
I was turned on to Rush by a buddy in tech school for the USAF in early 1976. Bought some of their albums and liked them. Fly By Night was one of my favorite records. In Oct. 1977, yes i had to look it up :-P , They came to the town i was stationed in and i went to see them. It was their 4th US tour #1 was 3 dates, #2 was 3, #3 was 4, this one was 6 so they were not really popular here... YET. It was in a Movie theater in the Will Rogers complex in Ft. Worth (about 2000 cap.) and we were on about row 7. These guys were GREAT. SO much music from 3 people was surprising to me. SO MUCH accuracy in the music was not surprising until i got about 20 more concerts in and ONLY Bob Seger and the Eagles were the same. This was about my second or 3rd concert and one of the best.
I was lucky to see them twice in 75 and 78.A friend of mine went to see them in Comisky Park ...Chicago.. in 1982.He took about 20 pictures of the three with the scoreboard in the background.Foghat played that day too.But i only have one picture of Lonesome Dave and Rod in that one.RIP Neil and Dave.....say hello to Jimmi....Janis....Jim and the rest of them in rock-n-roll heaven..!!
Hold on there Trigger. Neil is a favorite, and belongs on the top shelf of the best drummers, but you can't pitch all the other great drummers under the bus like that. I suggest you spend some time watching John Bonham's work, then move onto Carl Palmer, Buddy Rich, Ian Paice, Dave Lombardo, and the list goes on.
Just to chime in on this comment , but considering "In the Mood" was off their debut "Rush" album (aka pre Neil Peart the greatest drumner off all time). So I don't think he wrote the lyrics to "In the Mood"
Saw them 3 times. Hemispheres, Permanent Waves & Moving Pictures. So much sound from 3 guys. Plenty of double neck and Taurus petals then. And Geddy had perfected his voice. Fond memories of a bygone Era. RIP Neil.
This sounds better than the 2011 version I just watched. I never understood what certain musicians are thinking. I've watched actual live recordings from....lets say the mid-late 70's into the 80's and the sound quality is killer. I find the more digital technical mumbo-jumbo they have, the worse the sound is. Seems certain bands sounded better when they had less. Lifeson's guitar sounds far better here and on other earlier live footage than anything in the past 20-25 years. Peart's drums sound better here as well. I dunno I have took note of this years ago. To me the audio and camera work in the school footage 1974 is far far better than anything new. Has nothing to do with getting old and loosing a voice or skills, it just seems that when bands had less gear, simple gear, they sounded far better than they do now with all this rack mounted gear. This includes the PA and front of house gear. I often dreamed of the day where RUSH would play a gig before they called it quits, that they would do a tour using all vintage gear, the way they began. Peart playing his Slingerland with all the bells and whistles. Would have been awesome.
Theatre Mad aside from his lyrics, neils fill work is the best part about him. Its really unusual and creative. His fills on camera eye are absolutely bananas. Really hard to learn and memorize.
Now, if Rush really wanted to do something worthwhile, release the footage from the entire Montreal show. Two hours of footage was shot, the show from beginning to end. There is tons of material that is not included: including the monumental opening medley, featuring 2112's Overture, Prelude from Hemispheres, and the closing portion of Anthem.
Brad Whitcomb I agree that the footage should be released in full. What do you mean when you mention Anthem though? I think they'd stopped playing it by 1981.
I believe they wanted to do just that, but the original material was lost and never was found. They even reached out to folks (people part of management from that time and other folks connected to them) who may have had some copies lying around in their possession, no luck.
well they are retired now and dont have much to do as far as rush is concerned. i have a feeling they will start putting out all kinds of random stuff to keep the money flowing. why not? they should do that. we'll see.
Hell Yeah! I'd love to see the entire video footage from this show. I still scratch my head wondering why it has never been released. Also, I still believe the Kiel Auditorium bootleg of Bytor & The Snowdog is probably better than this version. Musically, they just flat out kill it!
7:10 I loooooove that Neil added in his own very Peart-sounding fill here over original drummer, John Rutsey's part. That fill is so very Neil and feels great placed in an old classic Rush tune like In The Mood. Cool Stuff.
I hear ya. We were so blessed to have experienced growing up when music was mindblowing. No other generation will experience what we did, and I would give anything to be able to be a teen again during the 70's. I'm 57 now, and life has lost its wonder, its gifts, its passion, its sweet innocence, and all that freedom. We lived when cars were all muscle, music was amazing, and you could make love in the back seat and not have a seat belt up your *ss or blow 6 air bags if you got that baby rockin'. We had it better than any other generation and that's why we miss it so much. ✌
Wow every time I see this makes me hard to decide which is better playing a Rickenbacker between Chris Squire and Geddy Lee, Geddy tears it up here, what a monster!
Because the vocals were too high for him later in his career and some classics like In the End don't sound as great downtuned and without the sheer power of the vocal delivery here. Later Geddy admitted the the Hemispheres tour nearly killed him because he struggled to sustain the required vocal range on 18 minute epics. As his voice mellowed they began writing to suit this change in his range. Geddy in the early days was unmatched for his power and endurance in the extremely long sets they played. Legend.
Neil at his peak too. Tthose Tamas sound incredible - probably the most inspirational drumkit ever assembled, only improved by the Candy Apple Red Signals kit. Would love to see the ESL drum solo but, for some utterly inexplicable reason, it was left off the DVD.

Hell Yeah! I'd love to see the entire video footage from this show. I still scratch my head wondering why it has never been released. Also, I still believe the Kiel Auditorium bootleg of Bytor & The Snowdog is probably better than this version. Musically, they just flat out kill it!
So many amazing years left at this point .. makes me smile... I was 3!
BRAVO RUSH! SAFE TRAVELS NEIL! WE WILL ALL SEE YOU SOON!
The best band ever
7:10 I loooooove that Neil added in his own very Peart-sounding fill here over original drummer, John Rutsey's part. That fill is so very Neil and feels great placed in an old classic Rush tune like In The Mood. Cool Stuff.
Suppose tou mean 7.10
@@hermanhelmich Ah yes, my mistake
I miss being young.
Rush sempre humilhando sua banda favorita!!
If I remember correctly, this medley actually began with a bit of Hemispheres, but it wasn't used in the film.
Wow every time I see this makes me hard to decide which is better playing a Rickenbacker between Chris Squire and Geddy Lee, Geddy tears it up here, what a monster!
2112 Finally
Some spin tingling music there.
RIP oh holy one
A God among men
In The End has always been one of my favourite Rush tracks. Never understood why they dropped it from later live shows.
Mine too
Because the vocals were too high for him later in his career and some classics like In the End don't sound as great downtuned and without the sheer power of the vocal delivery here.
Legend.
Awesome drum fill at 3:50.
This looks like the Moving Pictures tour. That was a great concert.
What a great video exit stage left was always one of my favorite Rush album's.
I love this entire show i saw it in seattle xo
Neil at his peak too. Tthose Tamas sound incredible - probably the most inspirational drumkit ever assembled, only improved by the Candy Apple Red Signals kit. Would love to see the ESL drum solo but, for some utterly inexplicable reason, it was left off the DVD.
Best of the boys right here
I am reminded of a line from one of Spider Man's villians from the 1960s cartoon series: "Your feeble mind can only twitch in awe at my greatness"
