- Suzanne Collins is BACK and she's bringing a new Hunger Games book to us in 2025, Sunrise on the Reaping.
This book will be following a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy as he enters into the 50th Hunger Games - a Quarter Quell where he'll face down double the normal amount of tributes.
In this video, we'll recap everything we know about Haymitch's Hunger Games, discuss book theories for Sunrise on the Reaping, AND discuss fancasts because THE MOVIE IS ALREADY IN THE WORKS. (I love that for us. It's coming out November 2026).
While I doubt we'll be seeing our beloved Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, I think there's a good chance we'll be seeing:

Definitely no Lucy. They left her ending with a mystery and an assumption that Snow might have killed her. It would ruin that ending to bring her back. Not worth it to the story. It needs to remain a question we don't have an answer for.
I want a continuation to Lucy or something. Even if it’s not a book, it could be a cameo or just a mention from Suzanne. For example, there is a very very VERY small chance that Lucy became Alma Coin, but like I said, very low chance.
Lucy's faith should remain a mystery. I don't want anything revealed about her. I like it when a writer leave some things open to the interpretation of the reader. It would make no sense for lucy gray to appear in panem again when snow is president. She would be captured and executed the second that Snow would realize she is back.
@@michboy_dad5947there is exactly a 0% chance that Lucy Gray and Coin are the same person. i would even go as far to say that there is negative chance.
I wouldn’t go so far that nothing is said about her though. I would love (and I think we will get) a mention of her by other main characters as a sort of ‘legend’ of folklore within district 12 that people still remember her.

Lets not forget that katniss mother mentioned in catching fire that Maysilee was one of her classmates and friends.

I never expected suzanne collins to return to this series after mockingjay, but i'm so glad she did

I think it would be pretty cool if the last scene of the movie was drunk Haymitch walking towards the cart where Katniss and Peeta are in the train - the moment were we see him first in the Hunger Games.

OMG YESSS 🙌🏼 that would be an amazing conclusion! (Shot opens with him getting ready in his empty dirty house - maybe trying to choose between two outfits on a bed. Him fixing his hair very little in the mirror but more him looking at himself and sighing then chugging down the rest of his scotch/alcohol. The scene follows his feet as he gets into the train, shot pans up behind his back… he sighs then the shot closes as he enters the room, got a split second we see Katniss and Peeta then the door closes/ black out!) omg 💀

I just want to see Kiefer Sutherland acting as President Snow, he looks so much like his father, it would be perfect!!!
If Cinna were to show up, he'd be a kid, since he was fairly young in The Hunger Games and it's stated that it's his first year as a stylist in that one. However, Tigris could conceivably appear as a stylist.

I think Maude Ivory, there was a mention that she could remember any of the songs Lucy sung after one or two listens, which makes sense why she would remember the hanging tree as Lucy only sung it once and then it was banned.
Edit: Also, in the books Katniss has this same talent and her dad knew the lake and the name “Katniss”

I can imagine the ending of the movie version will mirrored The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes, where on that movie, the ending wrapped by Donald Sutherland voice "It's the thing we've loved most, that destroyed us". But in this movie, it will end by Woody Harrelson's voice saying "Remember who the real enemy is"

I really hope Suzanne Collins breaks the mold here and dumps us immediately into the games with Haymitch. Like chapter 1 or 2. Then the last half of the book is the aftermath and his life in the year afterwards and his first year as a mentor. It would be something we haven’t seen before in this universe.
I predict Tigris plays a huge part in these games, and what she does as a stylist may finish off that fracture with Snow.
What if this book is from Plutarch Heavensbee point of view and how he learns propaganda and his inner dialogue about the atrocities of the Capitol

Another bold prediction I’m putting out there is that Maggs plays a huge role in Haymitch’s games. The endearing way that he spoke about her as being a really great lady is not lost on me, and there seems to be a unique feeling there. Perhaps she has to act as a surrogate mentor for district 12 because 12 technically doesn’t have a winner. The special addition to the quarter quell will be that previous winners must act as mentors.

Maybe Tigirs will be his stylist and they become friends and what Snow does to his family ends up playing a part in why Snow and Tigris fall out. Would be nice to see what went down between those two.
My fancast, and one that's popular on tiktok, is for Haymitch to be played by Tom Glynn-Carney. He is currently playing Aegon the 2nd in HBO's House of the Dragon and does a FANTASTIC job playing a drunk, emotionally disturbed kid with a dark sense of humor. He looks like him, and the role has been mentioned to him in an interview. He was flattered people want to see him on screen again and said "if all go well, he'd fight for his life in the Hunger Games" so I hold out hope for this dream famcast.
It would be pretty cool if the last scene of the movie, Haymitch visit Carine after giving birth… Haymitch ask the baby’s name… and she said ‘Katniss… Katniss Everdeen…’ THE END
I’m pretty sure katnisses mom was best friends with the girl that haymitch is in the games with (I forgot her name )so I think we will see her either before or after the games saying thanks to haymitch for staying with her as she died or her crying and saying bye to her friend
I’m 99% sure about this anyways and that katniss recognised her and that she remembered her mom saying her best friend was in the 50th and katniss didn’t realise haymitch was also

I prefer this so much than the last book/movie, because the last book was set a lot lot of years before the original trilogy, so in this new book I'm sure we're going to get concepts we already now. And I wish this won't be written from Haymitch's point of view, i want to see a rebellion being crushed after this games, just like happened in District 11 after Rue was unalive
And I want to see Snow becoming President, after himself destroys the entire Rebellion plan.
I think there’s a good chance we will see events after his hunger games - so we might see a stirring of rebellion! Not sure we would get an uprising yet but it could be interesting to watch snow trying to maintain control!

I want to see a situation in which because of how BLOODY those games were there is like an actual attempt of rebellion somewhere in Panem and Snow is ready to stop that RISE by making the oppression and all that capitol authority bigger than ever

idk i felt like the last movie dropped the ball on the philosophical moments in the book, so i hope the next one is able to actually stay focused on the themes of hume and (it sounds like) social constructionism.
for me, the arenas, the games, and even a lot of the characters are just set dressing. what’s really gripping abt these stories is how relevant they are to our lives in the 21st century, and how they’re able to build on ideas from centuries past, in a setting centuries in the future, while still feeling like it all applies to today. i felt like the movie adaptations of catching fire-mockingjay 2 had that, but ballad of songbirds and snakes got lost in the set dressing.
I can def see where you’re coming from - I loved Ballad and felt they did a good job showing how someone can turn from good to evil, but I do think some themes could have been more pronounced/the focus got put a lot on other areas
I have a feeling we’re going to see it not from Haymitch’s perspective & not from Snow’s perspective. I feel like the most interesting tie would be from Katniss’ mom’s perspective or the D12 escort since Haymitch would have not necessarily had a mentor due to Lucy Gray not being around… but also they would have had to have someone who could have potentially helped them but what that would have looked like being a Capitol citizen helping someone from the poorest district. That kind of fits the brief of what Suzanne was getting at.
Theory maybe chaf becomes a mentor for him once he gets to the capital because 11 and 12 are both underdogs and chaf feels bad that 12 has no mentor

I could imagine that what’s going on right now in Gaza could be part of the reason as to why she’s writing the book. The original trilogy was heavily inspired and influenced by her fathers experiences in Vietnam and of her experience growing up as a „military brat“. I remember that part of the events happening in mockingjay derive from multiple war zones - I wouldn’t be surprised if she’d incorporate tactics of the ongoing propaganda and mirror it
I’m so excited for the visuals. That arena is supposed to be super gorgeous like everything was poisonous but looked super beautiful, and just the thought of seeing what they create is so exciting

I was honestly quite surprised to see suzanne go the haymitch route. Since the games were explored in the books already and the way fans demand certain games it feels like they did not get the point of the books. I anticipate her taking a different approach than people think and certainly recent events will have had some part in inspiring it, especially with how similar it has been to her original inspiration

I think Katniss´s dad is the one who is descended from Maud Ivory, as he is the one who has the beautiul singing voice and knows the songs. Also Katniss´s mom is from the town, I think she is the daughter of the pharmacist, she is also the best friend Maislie Donnor.I think she has to be in the story as well.

I feel like she definitely might’ve been a stylist earlier on and struggled with the morality of the games and what snow is doing and that might be the submission and control aspect, why she later doesn’t align herself with Snow I don’t know I just really want more Tigris 😂

I hope they take more direction from the first movie than the rest. I think that one is the most impactful in terms of how the director did it!
I do love the first movie (directed by Gary Ross) but I just loved the style and look of Francis Lawrence’s work w the movies - however I do think there was a really good look at the raw emotion in the first one that I’d love to see in this next movie
I think the book and the movie will not go too far from the year of the 50th hunger games I think sometimes it is good to let the fans fill in the gaps with their own imagination. It makes the fans part of the story.
As far as casting for the movie goes, I have cousins who work in the film industry. I don’t know too much but I do know that with the movie being released in late 2026, they would have already casted and possibly started filming. Massive NDAs would have been signed by everyone on the project and we won’t get those details until marketing starts.
I never expected to say this because I dont usually enjoy fan service just for the sake of it but OMG I NEED THIS WHOLE THING TO BE FAN SERVICE

After recently rereading the original trilogy, I was reminded that Katniss' father was the one who taught her "The Hanging Tree". Her mom thought it was too dark and made them stop singing it but Katniss remembered all the words. So probably Dad was a descendant of the Covey?

I love the idea of Keifer S as President Snow, what an honor. Looking forward to this one.
Honestly, as a huge fan of THG (it is my absolute favourite book series and it means the world to me to an extent that not many things do) I am very lukewarm about this book.
My unpopular opinion is that I think these books, if they continue to be published, will lessen the quality of the series. I liked that a lot of things were shrouded in mystery and that allowed space for fans to create their own headcanons and so many amazing fanfictions were born out of that.
I think with a series like this that has stewed in people's minds for a decade, having new information is overwhelming. I will always prefer my headcanons elaborated over many years to what we are given 15 years later. I have not seen many people with this opinion so if anyone feels the same let me know.
I am not a Ballad hater, in fact I think it was a great exploration of the themes promised when the book was announced. Its flaws reside not in the fact that Snow was the main character (I supported that when so many were outraged because they demanded Haymitch or Finnick), but in the amount of fan service that was in the story. Trying to explain and connect everything (i.e The Hanging Tree, Mockingjays, Tigris and Snow being related...) to what we already know makes the world feel incredibly small. I still think it was not needed and adds nothing to the original series. Nothing can convince me that these are not being written to be turned into movies.
Now since this book is coming out and there is nothing I can do about it, I will probably still read it because I am giving SC the benefit of the doubt and I am sure she will weave in the philosophycal themes in an interesting way. What I hope is explored is the aftermath of the Games and the life of a victor which we did not get to see we K & P. Also how the Capitol uses propaganda to brainwash specifically children into watching the Games. I believe this would be the "Golden Age" of the Games because the majority of people watching would have grown up with them and it would be normalized. I hope we have multiple povs, maybe one from a Gamemaker.
What I absolutely do not want is a strong focus on the Games themselves. We already know what happened, and I don't want to see them be sensationalized in a movie again because that defeats the purpose of this series.
What I think would be cool but probably will not happen is if, since it's called Sunrise on the Reaping (I actually love that title) and it opens on the 2nd QQ reaping, it also ends in a flash forward on the morning of the 74th reaping, since it changed everything for Haymitch also.
If she tries to come out with a ✨️connecting✨️ revelation that Haymitch is actually Katniss' uncle or that Maysilee Donner wrote Deep In The Meadow I will throw the book across the room.
I definitely think this is a fair opinion to have and I can see why it would kind of dilute the original trilogy for people. I know I’m definitely pumped to read it 😅 but I can see that perspective! I agree on the connections w Maysilee or Haymitch that would be a stretch 😂

I would love to get some of katniss’ parents but even more than that, I would love if this story shed some light on Plutarch and some first interactions with haymitch. My ultimate dream would be one more book after this one about Plutarch’s story and how he joined the rebels and ultimately recruited haymitch. Sunrise on the Reaping could plant some really great seeds for that story.
Sidenote, it would be a fun nod to see peeta’s dad since he was in love with katniss’s mom and katniss’ mom was friends with Maysilee Donner.
I hear The Ballad movie was pretty rough and I hope this new one brings back the greatness
I want a new actor who's actually a teenager for haymitch. The Hunger games has such a big fandom that people will go see the movie no matter what. Why not use this chance to boost a young actors career?

Ive seen walker scobell mentioned which would be interesting. Unfortunately we're sort of restricted to a young version of the movies casting as opposed to how the characters looked in the books

I think it will be set up like Ballad too! Games, Victory Tour, and then a part 3 of some kind. I haven't seen much of Austin Butler's work but I've heard great things!! And I just saw Timothee Chalamet in Dune, and I thought he was wonderful!

David hume was a british philosopher for anyone who likes that kind of thing if you read him or hobbs leviathan you will get some great insight into society and how control and the state work.
Coin could be Lucy and Snow's granddaughter. Coin is described as being 50ish. She could be late forties. There is 65 years between the 10th and 75th hunger games. 65-48= 17. Lucy's child could have had Coin at 16. the math works.
We just need a book on finnick now

I LOVE DREW STARKEY!! But i think the actor of JJ from OBX is SUCH a good match!
My theory that I will protect with my life is that the perspective of the new novel will be of a career, who is spoon fed propaganda and the illusion of false hope and real vs not real with the honour of winning just for Haymitch to win in a way that breaks the rules and makes the career realise (similar to Cato) that everything was a lie.
This may be far fetched but i think Suzanne should make the main character katniss’ mother cuz she was rlly good friends with maysilee and katniss sees her with maysilee during the reaping

@@thatpeskyrat both agree and beg to disagree. Not all characters. Just the games themselves as a fan you would want to know what happens to all the games. It cant continue forever but to know more about specific people and their games would be great.
Lets say the list i mentioned then.
In a few of the movies they could aummarize the winners of games such as 1 to 9 as they were all the same basically. But for the others expanding the lore would be good for the fans and writers. At least in my opinion 😀
I’ve heard people saying Tom Glynn Carney because he does look a lot like woody but he is 29 so idk but he’s a great actor in house of the dragon and looks quite young in that show so he could be good but i think it would be better if they get a lesser known actor like they did with tom Blyth who wasn’t a big movie star yet
Why not switch between snow and haymitch? Make it a trilogy of snow books?
No way will HayMitch’s battle at the end of the book be as bloody as it is in catching fire. They can’t go too far without cranking up the age rating too high-we don’t need this to be NC-17.
Okay hear me out what about walker scobell as young haymitch?? Maybe??
I like walker scobell, he is a great actor. But I just don't think he has the acting chops to star in a huge production such as hunger games yet.
