Yeah Perennial is their best one and I Speak Astronomy. It is not that uncommon that someone switches from clean to heavy but for some reason people seem amazed that a woman can do it. Alyssa from Arch Enemy also has a clean and growl.

Welcome to your Jinjer experience! Jinjer is the band. Tatiana is the singer, Eugene is on bass, Roman on guitar, and Vlad on drums. Tatiana is an angelic beast vocally, and the rest of the band are all masters of their instruments. The growl is 100% her own voice. Though Tatiana is arguably the best growler around, there are many other men, and women who use this technique. Fun reaction. If you want more Jinjer check out Perennial live at Wacken.

  • @Dark__Thoughts
    @Dark__Thoughts 3 года назад +98

Jinjer is the band, which is also the general rule of thumb when it comes to metal. Her name is Tatiana, Roman on the guitar, Eugene on the bass and Vlad on the drums.
Of course it is not voice distortion technology used here, but her technique is not entirely clear, as she is self taught and thus don't really know herself. Most vocal coaches think it is false cord screaming through, which uses the false cords (vestibular folds) to produce those sounds in a healthy way. And yes, there are unhealthy ways. Lot's of death metal vocalists blew their voice out in the past, but there are a few vocal coaches that teach the different screaming techniques, which everyone with a functioning voice box can learn. I'll leave my usual Jinjer recommendations, in case you want to check out some more. Her vocal range is certainly not the only surprise they have in store.
    Official video suggestions:
    Teacher, Teacher
    Vortex
    I Speak Astronomy
    Cloud Factory
    Retrospection
No Hoard Of Value (official lyric video)
    Home Back
    Sit Stay Roll Over
    Live suggestions:
    Perennial live at Wacken
Who Is Gonna Be The One live
On The Top live in Kiev
Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev
Judgement & Punishment (one take vocal performance)

There are no more effects ,(even less than in some popular genres ) than any other modern singer uses nowadays. Tatiana uses some common effects such as delay ,layering, doubling ,but the voice is her natural ."Perennial" live at Wacken - great live stage performance.

  • @Neal_YouTube
    @Neal_YouTube 3 года назад +44

The singer, Tatiana, 100% makes the sound you are hearing. However, there is also a doubled audio on her 'growls' to make it thicker/deeper. I you want to hear her growls with no studio layering and just raw, check out either Who Is Gonna Be The One, or Perennial (Live at Wacken). Both are videos of live performances.

That's actually not true. There's heavy compression on the mic as well as some delay and reverb. Also sounds like the vocals are doubled in the screaming parts. Not a criticism of her. That's standard for metal vocalists. It's how to get that sound. She's a good vocalist, but these constant claims from her fans that she's not using the same effects as any other metal vocalist get really old.

One of the great joys on RUclips is to find a channel where a vocal coach/expert does "reaction" videos, and convince them to listen to Pisces without doing ANY ANY ANY research first. All people on their channels react with total shock and amazement as soon as Tatiana starts her growling.
But the reactions of the female vocal coaches is the absolute best--you can see the wheels spin as they think, "Can *I* make that sound???"

Great reaction! Subbed, thank you for bringing the unique fantastic genre twisting music of Jinjer to more people! Sorry for the long comment, I just love Jinjer too much and love seeing people discover (and usually fall in love with) them and each of their songs!
For most of their songs, the three guys write most of the instrument music, then Tatiana writes most of the lyrics and melodies. Roman the guitarist has written a lot of the instrument music in the past, but Vlad the drummer (who also plays guitar and classical piano, but so far not in Jinjer songs) wrote nine of the eleven songs for the album about to drop on August 27th (Wallflowers). Eugene composes some, and I know that apart from his amazing work on the bass, he adds riffs and has written lyrics for a few Jinjer songs.
The band (all members have been Ukrainian, with Russian their first language) started in eastern Ukraine in 2009 as a group of five with none of the current members (they consider the official start of the band as 2010 when Tatiana replaced the male vocalist and Roman joined as lead guitar), Vlad is the fifth drummer (joined in 2016) and it's been a group of four since 2015 (though they consider their sound engineer a fifth member). I think they're still friends with all the former members.
One of the things I love most about Jinjer is the messages in Tatiana's lyrics and the growling being so powerful for expressing the anger and pain in those messages: the anti-war message in Home Back, the anti-greed in On The Top and No Hoard Of Value (also the horror of the coal mining industry in their home Ukraine), the protest song Who Is Gonna Be The One, the anti-fascism of Sit Stay Roll Over, the anger at people being narrow minded in Teacher Teacher and Judgment & Punishment, the struggles with mental health in Pit Of Consciousness and Perennial, the giving voice to mother nature angry at humanity for destroying her in a bunch of songs like Ape, The Prophecy, Cloud Factory, Noah and Bad Water. Other favorites are I Speak Astronomy, Retrospection, Words of Wisdom, Just Another, Captain Clock, Scissors, Outlander, Exposed As A Liar, I Want It I'll Get It, A Plus Or A Minus, Dip A Sail, When Two Empires Collide, Beggar's Dance and lainnereP. I haven't found a Jinjer song I don't love, so I think you can't go wrong if you choose any of them, but a few good choices might be Perennial (live at Wacken), Judgement & Punishment (Tatiana's one take performance), Pit of Consciousness (live in Kiev/Kyiv) or the heartwrenching plea against war in Home Back (official video). Enjoy! ❤🤘

I've seen Jinjer live and I can say with confidence that is all Tatiana! They are an amazing group with a great catalog of music.
And for the growling technique... it is most definitely a learned skill! And it is very easy to damage your vocal chords if done either wrong or to much or both. I personally had to stop singing, pretty much all together, for a couple years cuz I was doing it wrong and was starting to damage my voice.

Great reaction :). As others have said, it's all her. Tatiana is very talented. Well, the whole band is (Eugene - bass, Roman - guitar, Vlad - drums). They are from Ukraine. They have quite a story behind them. They have been through a lot. They have been touring non-stop since roughly 2010 until the pandemic lockdown. They just finished a new studio album and released the first single off it: Vortex (which is awesome!). They are starting to tour again as everything opens up. I'm going to see them in Oct. Can't wait!
Also, pay attention to the lyrics. Tatiana writes some deep and thoughtful lyrics. All of their songs have a reason and meaning. It's not just to make a cool sounding song. This song is about the zodiac sign Pisces (Tatiana and Eugene are both Pisces). It's a dual sign, hence the duality in her singing style as well. Life and death, light and dark.
Here are some suggestions: I love all their songs. They really don't make bad songs. I'll put these in order of when it was performed (oldest to newest - tried to anyway), as they have had some changes in their lineup in their early years. They used to have two guitarists, now they have one guitar and one bass. Their current drummer is their fifth drummer and he has been with them the longest. This is a good start.
I Speak Astronomy: Official Video - this video was the original music video release with their previous drummer.
Who is Gonna Be the One: Live at Atlas 2017
Bad Water: Official Live Video (Kiev 2017)
    Teacher, Teacher: Official Video
Perennial: Live at Wacken Open Air 2019
On the Top: Official Music Video and Live in Kiev 2019
Pit of Consciousness: Official Music Video and Live in Kiev 2019
Judgement (& Punishment): Tatiana Shmayluk - One Take Vocal Performance - great video to see her up close with just her and the mic.
    Home Back: Official Video
    Vortex: Official Video
They also did a show for Hellfest at Home. An awesome live show, you can find it on RUclips: Jinjer au Hellfest 2021 - ARTE Concert. They finished the show with their new single Vortex (first live recording of the single). Can't wait until they drop their second single at the end of July. They said they will release three singles off this album before it's released on August 27th.

I read from other comments the "scream" doesn't come from vocal cords. They called them false vocal cords where they are able to expand vocal range through esophagus and chest. Sounded legit to me because I tried it, didn't get close, and I got better sound not using my voice and pushing sound though throat/esphous.

4:35 you can hear a layer of her vocals but she's using false chords to make that growl/scream so it's all Tatiana...

No idea if you've listened to them already but "Wolf Totem" by the band The Hu is an amazing song.
Also Jinjer is a rabbit hole band not heard a bad song yet and all seem to bring something new. I love the song "teacher, teacher"

Tatiana said she is not even able to teach her kind of growling, and I guess strongly because it is unique IMHO, and she has developed it by rehearsing and live performance, they did up to 200 shows per year, and she is doing it for a long time already. They are mainly a live band with extremely tight timing (i.e. fantastic on all levels, songwriting, lyrics, performance, genuine quality, a class of their own.)
If you want to hear her complete range of voice (not vocals styles, because she can literally sing everything pop/rock/metal and actually DOES in Jinjer songs, with maybe a slight preference of jazzy or reggae-ish vocals), I recommend, with truly deep and low growls and very soft and sweet vocals in between, you should definitely listen to their song "Home Back" (quite recent). This one also has VERY well done lyrics and fantastic video. Prepare to be blown away even a lot more. B.t.w., there is not a single "bad" Jinjer song since they are in existence, and really fantastic songs since they have the current line-up.

there is a backing track with another recording of her voice playing that "doubles" the voice in certain parts which confuses most people cause they can hear more than one voice. But yea check her live performances of which there is plenty on youtube and youll see that it is all her voice, no voice changing electronic effects at all

Yup she had mastered being able to growl without hurting herself. Beautiful voice both ways. 100% all her!

At this time I hope you have seen some of show videos of them. She does that all the time live in small venues or festivals. Tatjana Smaliuk is awesome. Well this dual voice you can hear from bands like Arch Enemy too.

Nobody screams/growls quite as well as Tatiana, but for female singers with similarly varied vocal styles in similar genres of music check out Poppy (Scary Mask, Breeders, Eat, X), Otep (Eet The Children, Confrontation), or Emilie Autumn (Liar, I Know Where You Sleep, I Want My Innocence Back).

She does this without equipment. Imagine going on a date with Tatiana and at some point she randomly pulls that voice out... :'D If you like to check out more songs and artists I would recommend you "Billie Eilish - My Boy (Bass Singers Acapella Cover)" - uploaded by Tomi P (acapella bass singer song... who would have guessed that haha). "Ahmed" - by Lowkey (sad and political, intelligent rap about war and refugee situation in the middle east, not sure if this is fitting for your channel tho) and pretty much anything by Home Free and Voiceplay. Hope you feel better soon and are ready for more "slaps" :)

Jinjer is the band name, which they chose because it resembles the "jnj jnj" sound of a down-tuned guitar. The singer's name is Tatiana Shmayluk. That is actually her. There are some post-production effects, such as vocal doubling in parts, and there are the usual effects on the mic, such as reverb, but nothing that gives her that growl. That's all her!

    Since you're asking for suggestions:
Nightwish--almost anything, but start with Ghost Love Score, Official Live from Wackien Open Air Festival (the Official Live from Buenos Aires is great, but Wacken is better).
Band-Maid--again, almost anything, but pick the live version any time you can. Either Freedom or Domination would be good starting places.
The Warning--for shock value, try their Enter Sandman cover, but be aware that it's pretty old, and that that makes a REAL difference in this case. More currently, try Narcisista or Dull Knives.
Steve n' Seagulls--start with the Thunderstruck cover.
Watch out, though--every single one of those bands is a rabbit hole that will pull you in to MANY more songs....
