    There's a ton of red eared sliders in the lake at our local city park 2 blocks from my house. They are probably released pets or the offspring of released pets. Some of the females are really large. Sometimes they gather around when people are feeding the fish or ducks. There's also huge snapping turtles in the lake. They actually seem to keep the lake healthy by scavenging dead fish and ducks. There's also a large number of bullfrogs. I've actually seen a bullfrog catch a sparrow once.

    The northern limit of the cottonmouth is just south and west of Atlanta, but could have moved north with climate change. You might be in the far southern suburbs. Hard to distinguish a cottonmouth from a harmless water snake, and the patterns of both vary. Cottonmouths tend to be stubbier and fatter. I lived in Atlanta 20 years and regularly fished and hiked along the Chattahoochee near I-75 and never saw a snake or turtle. All I ever found in Atlanta were a few garter snakes and what I called "worm snakes" under oak leaves (DeKay's?), but saw many copperheads in the N. Atlanta mountains. I found a similar large grey rat snake on Mt. Sano, AL. Didn't recognize since they range west of the Appalachians, but Atlanta is on the divide, so makes sense they are nearby.

    That wasn't a Midland water snake, that was a cottonmouth. The head of the snake was a triangle shape which means it is venomous

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 3 года назад

      That was absolutely a water snake. Head shape is not a reliable way to discern between venomous and non-venomous snakes. Many non-venomous snakes, including water snakes, often flatten their heads to make themselves look bigger and try to scare off predators. The group r/whatsthissnake on Reddit has more info.
