- A Leica is forever. That motto was the brand's selling point - and very nearly its downfall. After failing to keep pace with the digital revolution, in 2004 the German company almost went bankrupt. Then investor Andreas Kaufmann stepped in, and brought Leica back from the brink. Since then, Leica has invested 80 million euros in research and development. And in 2009, Leica achieved profitability once again. Report by Joanna Gottschalk.

I'm happy Kaufmann invested and changed Leica for the better. I love my Leica's.
Lenses are made in Germany (save a couple made in other countries) and Sensors are Panasonic, the Magnesium for the bodies are moulded in Spain/Portugal and assembled in Germany, then all shipped to Japan for things like the screen, the accessories and the box and other things. The reason why it has to say made in Japan when most is assembled in Germany is cause you have to stamp the country where majority of the whole thing is made - accessories count (charger etc) so Japan they have to stamp.
Andreas Kauffman is a true inspiration to me. Saved the company I have grown to love over the years of using their cameras.
PURELY PASSION! Thank you Leica for all the great moments you are giving me :-)
Im glad to be part of the Leica Legend - I really want them to succeed, because it means into the future, more affordable leicas. But for now, Im happy to own a Leica ME
I look forward to passing my m2 and/or m8 to my sons.
Don't be too surprised if they fail to give a rats furry behind.
I hope your son likes it, now aday not much people likes old cameras anymore
no,no,no,I work in portuguese LEICA,we make LEICAm6,LEICA M9 LEICA S2,LEICA X1000,ect,and they made in PORTUGAL
Made in Portugal they mean ,and assembled in Germany.
that's bs. Some products are made in Germany and some in Portugal...
The Leica M tho is made in Germany. If you pick one up you can also read "made in Wetzlar"
But nowadays the binoculars are all made in Portugal. Quality is the same tho since they are in Portugal for over 40years.
yea first in portugal and the it comes to leica germany. and in germany are the main steps like the sens and the imageboard and calibriation and so on. and thats what makes a leica
I'd love to collect cameras that's made in Germany. Too bad that cheap Leica cameras (costs around $1000) are all manufactured in Japan. Not that I'm saying Japanese craftsmanship is poor ..
I'm sure customers from Dubai, China and Russia have all saved up a long time to buy a Leica...
Interesting
no thats e comercial reson,MADE IN PORTUGAL !!!
but you didn't buy a leica m.
Can anyone please help me with the name of the background song?
I've just contacted the editors of Made in Germany. Maybe they can help.

If you pronounce Leica Laica, then how do you pronounce Laica? My guess is Leica.
Its a german company so german pronunciation.
beh pulire l'ottica con l'alito ,non è il massimo
Vero..
leica is made in portugal, not in germany !!!!!
Both. Leica Portugal exists since 1970. All Leica M cameras are nowadays made in Germany and so most of the lenses.
Leica binoculars f.e. are made in Portugal... .
The quality however is basically the same. And Leica always writes where their product is made and if you look on top of a M camera you can read "made in Wetzlar"
