- Cleaning a furnace flame sensor can be a very easy or a very hard job. Most HVAC techs only show you the easy scenarios but what do you do if the flame sensor is ridiculously hard to get to? In this video I show you a secret trick used by HVAC guys that makes accessing these hard flame sensors a walk in the park! No more fighting nasty flame sensors!

I got a 3 cylinder car now and maybe I can take it out and put it on my bench in the shed 😂.
It's brand new, so I guess I won't have to worry about it for 10 years or so and then I'll be too old anyway...

Great tip! We have the 4 burner version of that furnace and it is definitely a pita to access. But actually, the position of the sensor on the larger burner is further to the left such that one only needs to remove the pipe. We are replacing the furnace this year so i probably won't need to use the tip, but it is great to see this series on the Carrier furnace. Thanks!

Its videos like these that have helped me keep my 20 year old furnace running. I've changed the inducer motor, the blower motor , flame sensor. squirrel cage blower, also added a humidifier without any training. I've probably saved 2k-5k doing it myself

Great tip. Necessity is a mutha. I recall a Lennox furnace where the screw holding the sensor was accessible only from the back of the burner rack which meant that assembly had to be removed first. Why didn't they just install it from the front? Designers are funny birds.
That's a very good question! Sometimes it seems like the engineers did that on purpose.

That was crazy, as bad as changing the 12volt battery out, on some vehicles. Some are easy other require a bunch of disassembly to get at them.
Yeah! Unfortunately making things easily accessible is not very high on the manufacturer's priority list. 😅

I have a 1992 Lennox Diplomat. I think it's a category 5 to access the flame sensor.

Is a dirty flame sensor actually a common malfunction/problem?
Jay has a video on top ten issues for furnaces that won't start. It's high on the list. When I used to have my furnace "checked", the one guy I trusted said they always look at (and clean) the FS after the filter and intake and exhaust outlets are inspected..
Yes, as @rzh3443 already mentioned, a dirty flame sensor is actually the most common reason why a furnace stops working.

Sometimes using bulky power tools is worse than a traditional screwdriver
Yes! I know exactly what you mean. A plain long screw driver/nut driver often works much better.
@@WordofAdviceTVYes, that is how I have always done it on our Carrier. Skinny mini ratcheting screwdriver with exactly the right length extension to put the handle in a gap. Kinda like working on modern cars haha. Still takes 20 minutes of frustration to get the screw back in so your tip is much better!
1/4" ratcheting wrench can save you lots of time gettting out flame sensor screws

I once replaced a very fragile part which I broke verrry easily when I took it out . Igniter sensor
Yes, unlike the flame sensor, the ignitors can be very fragile!

Flex gas line in furnace burner compartment is against mechanical code. Also, it’s usually easier just to take out the whole burner box assembly. Then you have access to burners and flame sensor.
